The Shrek Franchise: What You Need To Know

- Last Christmas, a little movie called Puss in Boots: The Last Wish surprised a lot of folks by grossing a mighty $185 million domestically. Its success was big enough that Dreamworks, whose animated films have lately underwhelmed at the box office, announced that they might be bringing back the Shrek series, which Puss was a spin-off from. Starting in 2001, the Shrek films, which followed Mike Myers' lovable Ogre as he navigated a satirical fairytale kingdom with his faithful companions, Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy), were smash hits. The first Shrek, whose charmingly old-school CGI animation seems archaic now, made a might $266 million, and the sequel, Shrek 2, was even bigger, earning $441 million and doubling it's gross worldwide.
So why hasn't there been a new Shrek movie since 2010? At the time, the common wisdom was that the series had run its course, with Shrek the Third earning mixed reviews (although it still made $322 million domestically). Shrek Forever After was a box office disappointment, earning "only" $238 million, which seems pretty high in our post-Covid world. Had these movies come later, one assumes Dreamworks would still be churning them out, as each movie made more internationally than the one that came before it. This franchise, which remains a perennial favourite, is a check that's waiting to be cashed, so a revival seems inevitable. In this episode of What You Need to Know About This Franchise, we look back at the series, see how it was created and pick our favorite instalments.

At this point it goes without saying that the Shrek franchise is one of DreamWorks greatest masterpieces they made absolute history with this film series, They may have made other popular franchises but almost none of them ever came close to being as iconic ad memorable as Shrek!
This franchise is so iconic, and would probably look a whole lot different had Chris Farley voiced Shrek instead. While Chris will be forever missed, I'm glad that Mike Myers was the one to voice Shrek, since he made the role so iconic.
Interesting trivia
The first 2 movies are iconic, not so much the other 2
The second movie was arguably even better than the first, a rarity in sequels, since I just found it more memorable, and the jokes hilarious.
I like the 2nd one more than the first too. There shouldn't have been more movies after that
They were all good
Would have liked to see Chris Farley as Shrek thou
RIP
Shrek is the franchise that made Michael Eisner worried.
Shrek is love.
Shrek is life.
The Shrek Franchise pretty much changed animated films
Agreed, they paved the way for family movies to poke fun of pop culture and conventional storytelling.
For better or for worse…@@trinaq
Here's how I rank the Shrek films: Shrek 2 is the best, then Shrek 4, Shrek 3, & Shrek 1 is last. I know a lot of people say Shrek 3 is the worst, but my main problem with 1 is Shrek acts very unlikable for most of it, & I feel Lord Farquad is not as great a villain as the others.
Shrek is an important part of my childhood, I remember reading a magazine article how it was made, yes, before the Internet was wide-spread we had to look for information in magazines, it looked so different from other animated pictures. Eventually I watch the movie with my classmates in my second year of elementary when our P.E. class was canceled
One of the things that made Shrek standout from other movies was its Neutral Spanish dub, Donkey was voiced by Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez and he ad-libbed tons of jokes that have become memes, but the rest of the voice cast did a great job as well
I love Shrek 3. Merlin playing That's what friends are For never fails to make me laugh & I LOVE watching Gingy & Pinocchio make fun of Prince Charmings singing.
You guys have the best content while I’m doing my cardio!👊🏾
This is the part where you run away.
What are you doing in my swamp?!
Ogres are like onions.
I laughed when that first line showed up in "M3GAN."
@@glazdarklee1683 Nice.
Fun Fact: Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Ewan McGregor And Alexander Skarsgard Were All Considered For The Role Of Puss In Boots Before Antonio Banderas Was Cast
I wish they could've gotten Chris Hemsworth, Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp to voice Puss.
I like how shrek skirted the adult jokes line
These are all great points, but the only thing that really wore on me were the relentless "up yours Disney" references. At some point they stopped being clever and started being mean-spirited.
I actually didn't mind Shrek the Third. Not as good as 1,2 or Forever After, but I thought it was pretty good.
4:40, no. It’s a much better take than del Toro’s
The first two movies is important to me as this is one of my first movies that features swearing.
Shrek 1 is ok, 2 is amazing, the rest are balls.
#4 was good!
What's your opinion of the supposed 5th film that is in the works? It's clear from Puss in Boots 2 that people still love the franchise, but where could they go with Shrek 5 story wise?
My ranking for these movies:
Shrek 2
Puss in boots #2
Shrek 1
Shrek 4
Puss in boots #1
Shrek 3
Voice track for shrek was done 3times 1 with farley 1 with mike myers normal accent then again with scottish accent
its amazing how with not much there can be turned into one of the greatest film franchises in the world the first 2 shreks are masterpieces I don't hate the 3rd one as much as others do and the 4th one was pretty good a decent ending to the franchise or so we thought because spoiler alert for puss in the last wish the ending shows puss kitty and perrito sailing into far far away meaning theres a shrek 5 in the works and i'm all for that
Mentioning as great voice actors Amy Poehler, fair enough, Seht Rogan, but ignoring the fact John Cleese & Eric Idle were in the 3rd Shrek!!! Basically 1/3 of Monty Python being there! Come on!
All I know is that if Chris Farley didn’t overdose and die Michael Myers would have way less money…😬
Shrek (mike myers)
You forgot to mention the Christmas special.
Shrek 2, featuring a strapping Gordon Brown 😅😅
