WTF Happened to Dogma?

- One of director Kevin Smith’s most beloved - but also controversial - movies, Dogma, has seemingly vanished. The film, which remains his highest-grossing domestic release (by just a few hundred thousand dollars), was a considerable DVD hit back in the day, noted for its wildly un-PC commentary track where, amongst other things, Kevin Smith took aim at the film’s leading lady, Linda Fiorentino. It got a Blu-ray release, which is now out of print, but ever since then the film has been MIA, with it long unavailable on streaming, while old copies of the film cost a pretty penny if you can find them used. WTF Happened?
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into all things Dogma. We explain how the film was a religious hot potato that the Disney-owned Miramax films refused to release theatrically, leading to the Weinstein Brothers, Harvey and Bob, buying back the rights themselves, which they still control. With Harvey likely behind bars the rest of his life, no one involved with the film wants him to profit from an eventual re-release, so this one is likely to stay buried for years to come, making it a movie that, for the time being, has gone underground. In the end, this might be a cool fate for a movie that was always pretty edgy and remains one of Smith’s most ambitious efforts.
In this episode, which is written by Bryan Wolford, edited by Cesar Gabriel and narrated by Mathew Plale, we also dig into how Smith assembled a dream cast that included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, and even Alanis Morissette (as God) in a film that the Catholic Church once deemed an attack, but seems almost quaint and inoffensive nearly a quarter century later.
Do you think Dogma hold up? Should it be re-released even if Weinstein profits from it? Let us know in the comments!

This movie...is the prime example for WHY physical media is so important and why Streaming isn't the true future. Because...they can turn off the Streaming spigot at any time and for any reason. However, they cannot, at any time, stop you from watching your DvD or Bluray (or VHS, Laser Disc, VCD, etc.)
At one time I did have a copy of it on DVD but I'm not sure if I still do. Need to dig through my collection and find out.
Michael, is that you?
That's exactly why I still buy my favorite movies on DVD or Blu-ray
Kind-of. Physical games sometimes come with a limited number of keys you can use so if you get new computers you run out of them and the disc becomes worthless.
I hate how some streaming services, like Disney+ specifically, put certain shows that you need to watch to keep up with movies I can buy in DVD behind a monthly pay wall.
Dogma is probably Kevin Smith's most well-rounded film. It's a distillation of Smith's best qualities as a screenwriter, which unfortunately hasn't been built upon since.
It's my favorite
Alan Rickman being iconic as always.
Alan Rickman 😪😪
From what many have said, he was a genuinely nice guy.
It’s still one of my all time favorite movies. It has such an all-star cast. I found a copy of “Dogma” in a second hand store. It’s one of prized movies.
Amen!
It's one of mine too.
It’s a bag of shiiiiite
I got a bootleg copy before the Weinstein debacle but I watch it on Pluto tv all the time!
I found it in a second hand store to
When Rock learned that they first offered the part to will Smith it must have been like a slap in the face 😉🤣
Haha I see what you did there
This is still one of my favorite Smith movies. It’s equal parts hilarious and thought provoking.
George Carlin and buddy Jesus
The writing and pacing is shit lol. And the lead actress character is kinda useless. And I'm a Smith fan and Atheist.
Suddenly grateful that I still have all my DVDs from the 1990s on...
I lost a ton of mine to my ex.
Man. Kevin talking to the reporter is the most badassery ever.
Right! That part cracked me up.
That's Master Level Troll shit right there. He's a genius
Dogma is right up there with the original Clerks as one of Kevin Smith's best films.
I didn't realize the physical releases were out of print. I still have my 2-disk deluxe edition that I got signed by Kevin Smith at a convention back in 2004 or 2005 (it was the same year Clerks 2 came out), when I was in college. He also did one of his legendary Q&A sessions at that convention. I'll always remember this opening joke he made, where he said Wisconsin (where the con was located) was basically the Canada of the 50 states.
Consider it a compliment. Kev loves Canada. He filmed several episodes of the "Flash" in Vancouver and is a huge Hockey fan
I was lucky enough to get a copy on DVD years ago
You could probably sell that for hundreds
@@IronPsyde Never I was to lucky to find it
Same here. My sister got me the VHS for Christmas a few years after it came out because she knew I liked Kevin Smith movies. I never opened it up to watch it, not even once. I already saw it in the theater when it came out and it did show on cable over the years. Would opening it up and playing it ruin the value if it's a collector's item? =/
George Carlin was excited to be in a big film project for the first time. You can tell he was having a ball with his performance.
Bill and Ted ?
It was far from his first time in a big film.
😮💄🤷🏻♂️📻Ohhh
How excited? Half nude Buffalo Bill dancing to Goodbye Horses excited, or Jay recreating the scene excited?
When you're older you'll be ready to accept Dogma into your life over your excellent adventure @@bigcsp-oldschoolgamer6152
He's was Rufus in Billl&Ted in the early 90s sure
Last I checked a few months ago there was still a full upload available here on UA-cam from a random person. Good quality too. 👌 I thankfully still have my special edition 2 disc DVD set. 🙏 Praise Buddy Christ and George Carlin... "Doesn't he kinda, pop?!" 🤣
Sheeesshhhh
The Jesus giving you the thumbs up and a wink and smile does Pop!
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by STK, LLc
@@Irish381 damn straight he does!
@@charlesgirard268 goddamn bitch bastards...
My grandma hated this movie so much but I loved it when we watched it back then lmao as soon as she saw the Jesus statue giving the thumbs she was done lol I love this movie so much that I still have the Dogma 2 disc special edition on DVD. Such a damn good movie.
I've always wanted a Buddy Christ. It just seems like the perfect example of what a genuinely good Jesus would be like
It also ends with one of the most beautiful Alanis Morissette songs of all time. I love this film x
Totally!
This is still one of my favourite comedy movies. Such a great cast and hilarious story!
Always thought this was an underrated movie. Some people may have taken it too seriously. It is a comedy, not a documentary.
@Driftwannabe 10 yeah, me too.
It's a comedy, but it made a really good point about the depiction of Jesus Christ.
Why showing him on the cross instead of smiling and showing the love he's associated with?
I know why they use the cross, to remind people he died for them, but I don't think it's the best way to remember and represent him.
Cheers from France! 🍻
@Driftwannabe 10 Thanks mate 🤘
"Didn't wanna piss that rickman dude"
Words to live by
So happy I bought this on DVD when I have a chance I heard it’s pretty hard to find nowadays.. and I believe there Will not be a digital release because of the Weinstein connection
The scene where they kill the poop monster with a tiny breath spray is crazy but made hilarious when we find out the label on the spray reads "kills bad odors" (or something like that).
I find it weird that the Excremental ("poop monster") was called hells assassin when it's presence was smelled over ten feet away. It seems it would be real difficult to assassinate someone if they could smell you before you attacked.
Just saying
XD
Absolutely love this movie (minus the shit demon scene - that was just gross and dumb) and wish it would be released digitally in 4K!
Man, what a perfectly timed episode. I was trying to find Dogma on streaming services and was confused on why I couldn't find it.
Wow, I did not know about the current unavailability of this movie on home or streaming media, and that's mostly because I've not had to look for it since I got the double-disc, special collector's edition of the movie back in the early 2000s when it was available on DVD, which of course I still have. One of my favorite things about having the DVD is the provided outtakes/deleted scenes, specifically the deleted scene of when Azreal (Jason Lee) describes Hell in further detail to Bethany (Linda Florentino.)
No big deal, its wildly available on Bittorrent networks
I have that same DVD, and I even got it autographed at a convention back in the day. I, too, did not realize it was so rare these days.
its on youtube. ua-cam.com/video/7ZVEe_5Fo1Q/v-deo.html

This film badly needs a sequel! Loved it as a kid. Enjoyed it more as an adult 😆
Na it's perfect , doesn't need a sequel
@@vampirascoffin870Agreed, no sequel needed. Just look at how many garbage sequels exist. Dogma is great as a stand-alone movie.
They would never make a movie like this today anyway to many snowflakes would cry about it
it does, but sadly the sexual predator harvey weinstein owns it.
JoBlo, sorry to say, but the person doing the narration is not fit for that job. I love your content, and I'm sure they are good at a lot of things, but speaking is not one of them. They mumble so much, it is hard to understand what they are saying.
Thank you for the love for Dogma as it was one of the first movies that made me dig headier movies
Trips me out how hard it was to get a copy of this on dvd. When I tell you the joy my heart felt when my fingers touched this very copy was like re-living a teenage memory in actual time. The equivalent must've been how Dave Chappelle felt in Half/Baked holding that pound of weed on the way.
I got lucky and thrifted it
@@Meimisaki2001 same. 5 bucks
Pawn shops/Thrift stores are blessings in disguises
Showed my gf chasing amy first and then dogma got my gf into the films.
I have an alt yt account with dogma upolosded so I can watch it whenever I want. Absolutely love this movie
Wait what? Vincent? Kevin Smith has a son?
Thankfully I still have my DVD. Love this film.
Same here and thank god
It's actually on yt for free , I think it's 1080p too ,so enjoy bozos
Aye, I've been a lifelong Kevin Smith fan. And Dogma is one of his films I go back to year after year. It's one of my favorites in the Viewaskew Universe. Red State and Tusk are my favorites.
Dogma and life of Brian are my favorite biblical comedies
Jay's rants were absolutely hysterical in this movie ..easily my favorite Jason mewes performance
I’m so thankful that several years ago my wife and I found a Blu-ray copy of Dogma and bought it right away. It’s probably the rarest Blu-ray I own, and as a bonus we got the case signed by Jason Mewes when we went to see him on his stand up comedy tour.
ca-THOL-ic
I feel ironically like this film paints "GOD" in a very good light - it's a life-affirming movie. It's playful and generally portrays GOD as a figure of love - the bad guys are shown to be BAD. It's got a decent sense of heart and soul. I don't think it's "against GOD" at all - more like a criticism of organized religion over all. I think it's one of the smartest films of its kind. Balancing lowbrow humor with intricate lore and wit.
Smith said no one can find this movie for sale or streaming because HW still owns it and would not sell Smith back his own movie. Smith says he didn't mind paying for it because all of the money would go to HW's victims.
I’ve never heard someone mispronounce catholic before
I stopped the video at that point. If this guy can't pronounce simple words, what are the chances that he got any facts correct?
That’s kind of what I was thinking
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed, and glad others commented too! I mean, really? Dude doesn't know how to pronounce catholic properly? Geez!
This is one of the best family movies about a boy and his dog farm. I loved every character ofevery fog in the movie Dogma. I still don't know why it's controversial or makes religious ppl so mad. I'm assuming they don't like fogs. Well all of God's creatures are beautiful. Especially dogs. Loveable and loyal. It's not like any of the dogs were even mean. Sure there werevtwo gogs that i have to get put down because they were mistreated by their master. That Lucifer guy. But he will spend his life in jail. And probably his eternity in hell. And when the dog God came in towards the end of the movie she was beautiful. She kinda had the character of some kind of 90s persona. Can't put my fingers on it. And to save the two streetwise dogs. Jay and Bob,I thought it was weird that god gave them each a jaged little pill. And they both lived. With them wondering how they lived and her answr was " Well guys! Isn't it ironic zhñū7
That movie is Kevin's finest work
"Dogma" is one of the few Kevin Smith movies that doesn't feel juvenile. It has juvenile characters (Jay) and elements (shit monster), but they don't take center stage like they do in the Clerks movies.
I wanted to show this movie to my Spanish speaking gf, and couldn't find a blu ray with Spanish subtitles. Had to buy the European version
The only reason dogma is underrated is because Harvey Weinstein owns the rights to any kind of future distribution and Kevin Smith refuses to give that piece of Filth a single dime.
I can't blame him, I'm just happy I bought a DVD decades ago and I still have it.
It's here on UA-cam if you look for it. 🙄🙄
i thought it was pretty funny. recently you can get the DVD of it but it costs $30-50 still, & the blu-ray is like $130. probably from pirated sources, though
Ah the twisted minds. A mass shooting after reading Nietzsche or the book "Rage" from Stephen King. A madman would kill after reading a grandmother's recipe for how to make a good apple pie, with a rolling pin 😂🤣
I wish Weinstein didn't have the rights to Dogma, I want this great film on Blue-ray, I've got the DVD, but I want the Blue-ray, it's not available anywhere, at least it's free to watch here on YT, Dogma is great film, with at great cast and an awesome script.
As a Catholic -- eight years in Catholic school -- I love DOGMA.
Harvey Weinstein is already in bed with the Golgathan, so he might as well sell the rights to DOGMA, and put it out there once again.
Dogma is right here on UA-cam lol
You can stumble upon this film here on YT for free.
Kevin even pointed out a recent 4K upload that someone put up in the last year on numerous interviews as the copy his family watches, "because F* That Guy."
It’s crazy how much the Blu-Ray is worth. Still have mine. Love the flick.
you got the Blu-Ray? Nice. I've got the "collector's edition" double disc DVD(s).
How much is the bluray worth, I have it?
I didn't realize that my physical copy of Dogma is a rarity. I'll have to give it a fresh viewing.
Did anybody notice that the narrator was slurring his speech? I hope he's okay. Maybe he's just sick and trying to bang this out. I hope there's not some underlying problem here.
I watched Dogma on UA-cam
Totally missed the "Lady Abigail" cameo as the nun wearing the habit- that's some quality content right there! Also, not surprised to learn that there was tension between Kevin Smith and Linda Fiorentino. I'm a bit of an empath, and I could just tell she was not having a good time the whole movie. How much better would Joey Lauren Adams or Janeane Garofalo have been in the lead role?
I missed the Aberlin cameo too, but knew I knew her from somewhere. The film was mostly shot in Pittsburgh so it makes sense. Imagine if Smith could have gotten Mr. Rogers.
Brought my grandpa to see this in the theater because he hated the Catholic Church. He did chuckle at the mockery of it all.
What are you talking about? The DVD is readily available on Amazon.
I fortunately still have a working VCR and Dogma on VHS.
Shit, I have the special edition blu-ray. Anybody wanna buy it?
One of those movies that slapped my atheist ass right in the face when it landed. I loved it. George Carlin was such an impeccable move. That killed me.
The gore and humour the story in general...Great watch.
Ive only ever seen it twice. This has just reminded me to go download it. Thanks!
Jeff Anderson definitely should have gone on to something. At least a sitcom for crying out loud.
Dogma is great. Back in my pre/early teens I would watch several vhs movies over and over on my 13" tv vhs player combo set. Dogma was one of those movies.
There have been a few you tube uploads thankfully, for those who really want to see it.
How did this guy pronounce Catholic? What???
I absolutely love Dogma it's one of my favorite in viewaskiew verse
I still have this on VHS, now all I need is a VCR
My dog's name is Bartleby. I wanted a second dog to name Loki but my wife poopoo'd that idea.
One of Kevin Smith best films. As a Roman Catholic, I found it hilarious, a true catholic has to have a open mind to show the ridiculous truth to some of its teachings. Lol
I love this movie. It is the prize of my DVD collection... as well as "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back!" As a Catholic-raised filmmaker, I understand the cojones it took to make this.
I worked as an extra in this movie I got paid 50 bucks for the day and we had access to the food about it but it was still awesome to be there. Sad thing is I got edited out I was in the church crowd at the end of the movie.
That must've been such a cool experience. Did you get to meet any of the actors?
@@jmarx3943 not really just saw them from a distance, but I did meet Kevin Smith and he signed a copy of Daredevil (that he wrote) for me and was super cool and down to earth
Did he pronounce Catholic as ka tha lick?!?
Huh. Had no idea Weinstein had a death grip on this. Too bad.
can you do wtf happened to house of the dead (2003)?
I got my copy.
The executive " massacre " scene is easily one of my favorite parts

The movies here on UA-cam. U can watch it free
The special features are great in this!!! I used to own it but now I just have a shitty DVD with none
You can watch theo whole movie free on UA-cam
It's available on the Internet Archive
I still love Kevin Smiths early movies...I can't stand that he sold himself out with though.
Same,.. after Jay and Silet Bob,.. and maybe that walrus movie, ..Smith lost his craft
I remember as a kid my parents had some priest come to our house to bless it or something religious and he emphasized that this movie was satanic and shouldn't be watched 😆🤣
I’ve still never watched clerks but I love Dogma and Mallrats. I watched dogma again a few years ago I found it on UA-cam actually
The sh%t demon is the best thing in this film.
How do you not mention Salma Hayek?
I still have my VHS copy
I love Dogma! I bought a copy years ago. Glad I did now.
I love the movie, I truly didn't know there was alot of issues making the movie, but still till this day a fan of the movie 🙏🎓💪👍😲
I remember in high school spending many study halls reading the early leaked script I had printed off.
This is one of the most introspective and well made movies I've ever watched. Those who protest it do because the movie cast a light on their own hypocrisy and narrow mindedness.
Indeed it does. Satire is like a mirror, and vampires fear mirrors because it reveals their kind to the others around them.
Pitiful creatures indeed, but everybody counts.
The human thing is to help and protect someone who invokes pity, and movies like this are a tool of redemption.
Sorry for the cheesiness, must be the weather...
😇
Those who protested it were just projecting their own resentment about the failings of teaching the faith and theology well. This is a fun comedy and not much more ... it is a stretch to call it satire as it attempts to mock a distorted 3rd grade level theology, but it does contain a few genuine scenes about what faith might mean to a few people. The cast is fantastic.
It's one of those movies you gotta watch.... any way you can!
Great movie, still have my original DVD from the 00's with Widescreen on one side and Full on the reverse, remember those?
It’s free on UA-cam!!!!!
Dogma is on UA-cam...
I don't believe in voodoo..
One of the memorable movies my mother bought to me when I was 12 ^-^
Along with Sphere. I prefer Sphere but Dogma certainly is special!

That's hilarious :D

This just makes it MORALLY JUSTIFIED to Pirate the movie.
I love this movie, hidden gem
Great movies this 😅👍
After watching this video, I could have sworn that I had a copy of the Dogma DVD, so I checked. Indeed I do. A Kevin Smith-signed copy, no less.
Score!
This was Smiths best attempt at a movie that felt big budget with real stars. It really felt like a complete film, add the star power, a good story, and some pretty clever theological takes, it's a really good watch beyond the obligatory dick and fart jokes.
Dogma is brilliant
