Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Greatest Adventure Movie Ever Made

- Before Harrison Ford dusts off his fedora and rethreads his trusty bullwhip for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, we're looking back at the film that launched one of the most iconic action adventure franchises in Hollywood history, Raiders of the Lost Ark. The brainchild of George Lucas and his close friend, Steven Spielberg. Their collective vision for Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones Jr. evolved from their love of old adventure serials. They saw Indy as an American equivalent of James Bond, an explorer who uncovers artifacts and punches Nazis instead of fighting for his queen and country and sleeping with the enemy.

A masterpiece of filmmaking that has never been equalled, and never will be.
Best example of Hollywood action and pacing to ever grace film
Uhhhh Indiana Jones 3
Can’t say never… the future isn’t known
@@jarrodedson5441 I'll agree it's an excellent film, better than the awful Temple of Doom, and Connery is an absolute joy to watch, but it's just not as satisfying as Raiders.
@@jtgd Raiders was a product of a time now long dead in Hollywood. Filmed in real locations, practical effects done in camera, stuntmen doing what they do best, beautiful matte paintings, and old school special effects.
These days it's CGI everything and green screen in a studio, it just doesn't even come close.
The face melting scene is still iconic and scary at the same time; even 42 years later.
I rewatched this movie so many times. Had it in like 4 VHS' Definitely inspired a lot in my life
I never tire of it.
It's draw is incredible. .... magical.
My life too ......
Indiana Jones is one of the greatest Trilogies in film history.
Raiders remains my all-time favorite action/adventure film; it's practically a perfect film.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is the greatest action movie ever. And before anyone says anything about Die Hard, Raiders has A LOT more action than Die Hard, where John McClain spends a large amount of the movie hiding from the terrorists. Raiders is pure action all the way through
The original trilogy are my childhood favorite movies!
I still love them to this day.
These movies made Steven Spielberg my favorite Director of all time. Harrison Ford my my favorite actor of all time and Indiana Jones my favorite movie character of all time.
My favorite movie of all time. Im 50 now & I still wanna be Indiana Jones!
This movie is my gold standard for action/adventure films. Not only has it held up these many years but it only gets better every time I see or hear it.
Peak Spielberg and Lucas.
This is as good as Hollywood can get.
A masterpiece.
There is nothing original in this film, but it is and more than likely will continue to be the greatest adventure serial transformed to film cut that we will ever see. I saw this as a 14 year old lad when it came out, and it still gives the same thrills and **ck Yeah attitude like it did in 1981...Yeah...and there are only three Indiana Jones movies.
I just watched finished this masterpiece a few minutes ago! This is Still the greatest adventure movie of all time!
"Raiders" was definitely Spielberg & Lucas at their best. Hiring Ford to portray Dr. Jones was perfect, too. And though I love Tom Selleck in certain roles, I'm *VERY* glad he wasn't cast as Jones. Same with Sean Young. That would've been terrible. Karen Allen was super ideal as Marion, too.
No argument here, though I will admit it would have been interesting to see how Tom Selleck would have played Indy.
Ford is Indiana Jones for me, but I honestly don't think Selleck would have been bad or anything. He would have played it a bit differently, a bit stiffer and more intimidating (he's noticeably taller and broader), but he could have done the role well enough. I can imagine an alternate universe where he took the role and the movie is probably still regarded well, but probably not as well as our version.
Tom Selleck would have taken it too seriously the whole time. He isn't a good one liner or cynical actor.
@@n.d.m.515 True
@@ThatSoddingGamer Can't argue that
This movie, more than any other, is stamped on my childhood.
Best adventure trilogy ever made!
Back when we still had nice things. ❤
Yeah those days are long gone
I grew up watching Raiders with my dad so many times. I never get tired of watching it.
6:19 I love that line so much. The fact that Ford improved it because he forgot the actual line just makes it so much better.
Indy, One Of My Childhood Heroes. I Saw This In The Theater.
yesterday i watched Temple of Doom (because it is basically a prequel to Raiders) and i was impressed by how damn good the movie just is. I almost forgot how creative it is.
Favorite movie of all time.
The movie where I fell in love with cinema. I was 11. It's still in my top five movies ever and I've seen many thousands in the 42 years since.
George Lucas created three of the most bad-ass female characters in movie history: Princess Leia Organa, Marion Ravenwood, and Princess Sorsha.
I remember seeing this at the cinema when it came out when I was like 10 or so. What a great film and one of the ones that cemented my love of cinema!
I remember my best Friend explaining the start of the movie to me, about the same age.
My jaw hit the floor at the end when the nazis opened the Ark. I felt like I shouldn't be watching it either and yet I could not take my eyes off the screen for pure joy. No film has ever made me feel that way but many have come close.
The one that started it all just a classic and it still holds up 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My favorite movie of all time .....
"Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Greatest Adventure Movie Ever Made"
I can't argue with that.
This will ALWAYS be a classic. I introduced this to my nephews & they loved it even though they are a Tik Tok generation. Great video!
and still better than most movies made today. Low budget, practical stunts and in camera effects.
One of the rares movies that inspired my life...and still..!
Still the best Indiana Jones movie ever made
As for me, IMHO, the third one is at the same level, I am not able to put one above the other.
I agree. For some reason I don't like the 3rd so much, but lots of people do. This is perfect balance, didn't have any stupid humour, serious movie but appeals to everyone.
I first saw this film under the best and worse conditions... its opening at Grauman's in Hollywood but the only seats available were in the front row so I came out with a stiff neck. Still, I got to interview the star, the producer, "and the rest" (writer and editor) for our film school under questionable circumstances. This movie was a smorgasbord as well as a full meal. They don't come much better.
The young Indy show is notoriously underrated. They messed it up condensing it for a mini series but still a good watch.
One of the movies you can join anytime, and watch unlimited times, but never get bored of it.
Completely agreed!! 🙌
Why Hollywood doesn't make this kind of outdoorsy treasure hunt action adventure movies anymore???
What's stopping them?? BUDGET??? Over dependence on CGI???
80's were the best era of such movies 💰💸❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
80s movies are overrated
The only thing i can remember coming close was National Treasure
Btw Romancing the Stone and The Nile Jewel were pretty cool and had that Indy vibe
@@rgerber Absolutely but those were basically rom coms
Also 80's GEM ❤
@@matthewmoran5297 🙄
The editing made this film the best, it was so inspired. They would mention something in one scene, u think was inconsequential, then the next scene would be readdressed to show that it was a major plot point; that awareness is what makes the direction amazing, really digging into the story, believing in the story, you could tell that the people behind the cameras were INTO the make believe of it. No hesitation, or suspension of disbelief.
Maybe it's the religious aspect nof it, that really gave it soul. In TOD, the same, spiritualism is apparent. Last crusade, the same.
i just watched this today! a downtown theatre is featuring raiders and last crusade as part of their $5.00 rerun movie series as a buildup to dial of destiny. it's great to watch it on a big screen for the first time :D the "raider's march" isn't a song, but a piece - songs have lyrics.
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but won for:
Best Visual Effects
Best Sound Effects
Best Sound Editing
Best Production Design
Best Film Editing.
Chariots of fire won, great movie, I did some research, chariots of fire was last shown on any USA TV channel 1999 since then not on once, in the UK it was shown in 2015. Raiders is shown all the time and watched all the time like it's your first time
I'm a temple of doom guy myself. But I do like that doc ock was in the beginning of ark
24:19...to be fair, the screenplay for Romancing the Stone was actually written in 1979...2 years BEFORE Raiders
As long as I like RAIDERS a lot, my favourite is TEMPLE OF DOOM. The main reason is in RAIDERS, Indy does absolutely nothing during the long final climax while in TEMPLE OF DOOM, he spent almost half a hour of the movie struggling for his own life while saving those of hundreds of kids', and of Short Round's and of Willie's in a seemingly endless series of coups de theatre !
Temple of Doom doesnt hold a candle to Raiders, LOL! Willie is annoying, way less action in the film, main villian is underused, boring and doesnt come in until an hour into the film. The main artifact is ridiculous and doesnt pose any serious threat to the world or a huge level. The fact that Indy just "happens" to accidentally find their village is poor writing. Short Round can't even save the movie and the mine kart chase is the only entertaining thing other than the intro sequence. Raiders has the opposite of all these downfalls in spades. You sir are clueless......lol
@yanndick.... That's Cause He Had Gotten Left To Die In A Tomb Escaped Only To Have To Fight A Mechanic Who Is Younger And Stronger Only To Have To Go A Few Rounds With A Bigger Guy And Then Chases After The Ark Gets Shot In His Arm And Thrown Out Of The Truck To Be Run Over But Manages To Overcome That And Steals The Ark Back The Last Part Was Basically Getting To The Island So They Could Open It.
@@spice_krispies You may think I'm clueless, the fact remains that Indy does absolutely nothing during the final climax of RAIDERS. And because he did a lot before that point just emphasizes this situation at the end : he does nothing because he can't do anything but telling Marion to close her eyes (And that with no reason told in the movie).
I love RAIDERS, I do, but it's far from flawless too.
Nothing since has been the equal. Best movie ever.
Major Arnold Toht was based off of Peter Lorre. He definitely creeped me out.
In this present cycle of movies that run three hours and more, no one complained about Raiders of the Lost Ark’s runtime of 115 minutes.
This has been in my Top 10 for DECADES... and it will likely never be removed.
One of the greatest…
Indiana jones sparked my love of archeology thriller books for sure. I still love these movies! romancing the stone is another favorite of mine.
Fun fact, I was by the golf course on the day it happened. We were all worried about him that day
Harrison ford negotiated a 7 figure salary and a percentage of the profits.
And Spielberg (with Lucas) dedicated the rest of their lives to avenging this.
With Crystal Skull, TFA and DoD, I'd say mission accomplished
Funny, 'cause I liked _KOTCS_ and the sequel trilogy.
@@matthewmoran5297cool 👍
"Avenging"? What are you even talking about??? 🙄
Raiders and Last Crusade are the best.
Wtf temple of doom was amazing
Exactly. To me the original Indiana Jones trilogy are the three greatest films of all time. All three are masterclass in action and adventure storytelling and have yet to be beat. KotCS is not as horrible as some make out, the middle portion of the movie is pretty good, but from the jungle chase onwards, there's no denying that it became an unintentional comedy. I had high hopes for Dial of Destiny, but unfortunately things are not looking good for it. At least we'll always have the original three to cherish.
À masterpiece of Modern Action Cinema 🎥. The third part Last Crusade has always been my favourite part of the series but this was. A great introduction to Harrison Ford's introduction to the legendary Indiana Jones. It was the only one in the series not to have Indiana Jones in the title like it's sequels. Although in recent years it has been renamed on posters to include Indiana Jones in the title. Classic filmmaking back in the day when everything was done in practical effects.
I got to see this and batman 89 at a drive in theater. 😎 I was a wee lad, and it was awesome.
"It's great - that's great - it's gonna be great - that's gonna be great"!
Dude! Very clever!!
Purposely mispronouncing several of the character’s names just to get the nerd types (like me) to write a comment pointing out the errors helps to boost the video in the algorithms.
It’s a diabolically genius move! Hats off to you!
very true. my favourite of the whole franchise❤
Greatest film of all time. From start to finish, spectacular.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark: The Greatest Movie Ever Made
Still his best film. I wouldn't have minded if all he did was American Graffiti, this film, Witness and Frantic. Perfect career in my humble opinion 👌
Very interesting who was considered for the roles. The movie is perfect and still love watching them even though I’ve watched them a million times!
Excellent video, but it would have been nice if the narrator had also mentioned "Raiders of the Lost Ark's" influence in television with shows like "Bring Em Back Alive" with Bruce Boxleitner and "Tales Of The Gold Monkey" with Stephen Collins.
Don Winslow of the NAVY!!!!
I AGREE, Thank You for the Video 😀
One of my favourite films ever.
One of top 5 enjoyable watches still.
I submit that the Indiana Jones theme is the best theme of all cinema, nothing hypes you up like Indy's theme
The greatest teacher failure is👴to quote Yoda. Failing to get Tom Seleck and Sean Young. Was a stroke of good luck👀
If you, unfortunately, have watched the Dial of Destiny, you will need to rewatch this to clean your eyes and soul badly.
Having my Indython now. Watched Raiders earlier and watching Temple Of Doom now. Raiders is well done, my favorite movie a a kid.
They dont make Perfect 10 movies any more. They just make green screens.
Raiders is a classic but Last Crusade is a masterpiece 👌
You got it backwards.
@@aranbuzzas8000Yep
Last Crusade Was Good But You Don't Feel Like Indiana Is In Danger And The Action Sequences reinforce It.
Anyone watch the Big Bang Theory episode were Amy tells Sheldon that if Indy didn't intervene, the same outcome would have happened? Funny if you think about it but still, RotLA is in my opinion the best of the trilogy with a very close TLC right up there too!
They wouldn’t have tracked down Marion and the medallion without tailing him. Also the nazis were digging in the wrong place because they put the staff in the wrong hole. Indy was the one who discovered where the proper place to dig was. Just my thoughts on it 🤷🏼♂️
@@callen9623 True, but I guess that in the end Dark Helmet would have made them all comb the desert and they would have eventually found it🤣
Lol fair enough
The fact that Indy doesn't influence the ultimate outcome if the plot is completely superfluous. It's the RIDE that matters. Were you entertained watching? Mission accomplished.
Its the movie poster I have hagging up in my basement theater!
IMO Raiders is not only the best Indiana Jones film, but it is the best film Spielberg ever made, it is the best adventure film Hollywood ever made, hell it is the best action film ever made. If you ever want an example of how pacing is paramount to filmmaking, watch Raiders.
Sorry, Last Crusade is better....
@@spice_krispies For you, but not for me.
@@spice_krispiesLast Crusade is a great sequel.
But Raiders is a CLASSIC.
@@spice_krispiesNo Way Is Last Crusade Better It's Good But It Pales In Comparison To Raiders.
@@aranbuzzas8000That Guy Is Tripping Last Crusade Has It's Moments But You Don't Feel That Indy Is Really In Danger Whereas Raiders You Feel Like Indy Could Die Any Minute.
We just had this discussion and poll on The Real BBC with Nerdrotic, AZ, and Mauler. The same time you released this video. I think it is. The voting came down to Empire and Raiders. Empire win at 52% it was very close the whole time and if they would have left it up longer I think it would have been dead locked.
Excellent vid! Thank you!
1981 looks like a year for movies that "hold up" on to this day - An American Werewolf In London, For Your Eyes Only and Raiders Of The Lost Ark et al.
I've yet to see 'Dial Of Destiny', here's my preference for each episode:
Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Last Crusade,
Temple Of Doom and Crystal Skull.
Whilst a good number of people credit Spielberg and Lucas et al for creating the project/franchise, don't ever forget Stunt Coordinators and stunt performers in staging brilliant action scenes.
Most iconic is where Jones is thrown out by an enemy on to that bonnet and ends up being dragged, then gets back in : performed by veteran Terry Leonard - whose credentials in movies say it all - moviemaking doesn't get much better than this.
Don’t have time to watch this video now. But thumbs up, because this surely is the GOAT when it comes to action adventures.
Imagine going back in time and somehow securing the rights for Lucas to do Flash Gordon. You'd be like, "WOW! Flash is a really great film!"
Then you'd head back to your original time period and realize, "dammit, there's no Raiders?!"
that would SUCK
Who here enjoys Temple of Doom too?
Temple is overrated crap
Same here: as lead villain, noted Indian Actor Amrish Puri is fantastic beyond words, despite Puri being frightening, according to Harrison Ford, he's a gentleman in real life.
It truly is an awesome movie!
This should be called raiders of the lost art of making the movie
My favorite trilogy
Arguably so. There are other really great adventure movies which may rival it like King Kong, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, Adventures Of Robin Hood, African Queen, 1940’s Thief Of Baghdad
I'll beg you to do something like this for Meryl Streep, either Deer Hunter or her forgotten Hitchcockesque Still of The Night
French Lieutenants Woman would be my second choice ❤❤
Dysyntery: Spielberg wasn't "lucky"--he ate only canned food.
Aside from Selleck and Ford, i can really see Nick Nolte really being a really good Indy considering what Lucas and Spielberg was looking for
Romancing the Stone was already written in 1979 before Indiana Jones. It's a misconception that it was a rip-off. I love both movies.
So many great plot holes :) Love it!
Masterpeace!! 😎👍👌😎👊✊😎🍁
just fyi, for anyone looking, the Akubra Federation 4 fedora is the best bang for buck. safe travels.
I have an Akubra Federation 3 which I got back in 2003. 😊
Raiders: best phase
Temple of doom: best action
Last crusade: best story
and as with newer movies made for ‘modern’ audiences , the last two made Temple of Doom, an Empire Strikes Back.
This title says it all and does not exaggerate...
My grandfather took me to go see The Last Crusade in theaters when I was 8yrs old. I was already watching the first 2 movies on vhs and when he got the 3rd Im surprised I didnt wear them out lol. I was always binge watching them along with The Goonies. Those movies are staples of my childhood. Then many years later a dumpster fire named Crystal Skull came around. I refuse to watch the new one.
Don Winslow ... in the Army, you say? :D
The original trilogy is amazing. Concept of 4 not bad. My opinion.
Temple is beyond overrated. Crystal Skull does so many things better
Kinda weird how one of the greatest action directors of our time, couldn't make a 'US equivalent Bond franchise', despite the fact that two of the films are excellent, one ok, and two bad, yet quite a lot of Bond films have been phoning it in.
I kinda want to live in the universe where Tom Selleck is Indiana Jones. There's something there I think we all missed out on.
Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Reverse Mortgage
just watched the whole trilogy, (and the last one also...) again, getting ready for Dial of destiny. Raiders is still the best action adventure movie, and the best Spielberg hands down.
getting ready to avoid it, so hollywood will have a motive to stop making horrible movies that desecrate beloved characters? you are getting ready to avoid it right? you aren't planning to support it financially are you ?
@@William-the-Guy if its better than cristal skull, ill give it a try.
