"You could make an extra 20hp or maybe more... but I'm kind of lazy and it's good enough." - The King
I love Mike's positive attitude toward Subarus and EJs. Instead on joining in on the EJ hate bandwagon, he actually enjoys figuring out how to overcome the limitations and then gives us all that info for free
Plus he realizes that Subaru doesn’t build $100k super cars or $1mm hyper cars.
Everything is engineered to a price point. 🤷♂️
When moto-iq talks about Subarus I listen. Gonna watch in its entirety after I get home from work later.
literally same bro. I’m wanting to build my subie engine and literally will just do everything he says haha.
You really can’t go wrong listening to him. I have no intentions of modding my 19 crosstrek, I just like to dream and window shop.
I don't have much beyond used motors and scrap metal. It's all on my fabricobbling and collected knowledge to make HP with my 97 Legacy and the leftovers I use for parts. This guy has given out most and best info on engine issues that I have found and I am eternally grateful.😅
Did you watch it yet? Cause im in the same situation as you lol 😂
I don't only listen, I take notes.
This guy is hands down the best background noise I've ever had for falling asleep, dude is the Bob Ross of cars
Thank you for not gatekeeping the info and keeping it public. you're the man.
oof, cringe use of the word right there
@@max_coast ??????
I think he means gatekeeping implies withholding pertinent information, so your use was redundant? Personally I get this is a UA-cam comment section and so do normal people. You got the point across lolol
Yep. It’s awesome when you get to the level of expertise to where you dont even care about giving away secrets.
Plus his shop will be booked solid for eternity no matter what so it doesn’t matter to him lol
@@crispyone2564 Agreed. To me, it's one thing to know the recipe and have all the ingredients, another is to actually do it.
Building a car that’s functions well as a street car, yet pulls like a rhinoceros, takes careful planning. Nice work, Mike!!
I poo and fart like a rhinoceros.
This guy is literally the Jesus Christ of Subarus. One of the very few people I have genuinely and consistently learned from through out the years. Been daily driving my STI for almost 3 years!
Hey bro any recommendations , I have a mechanic doing the block and heads for me. He suggested a bigger oil pump
And new timing belt . I also want to get a AOS and Oil pickup from IAG or killer B ?? Any recommendations
Sounds fricking dope to be able take care of the sti for that long
Thank you bro I appreciate that! I have an IAG AOS. I have a killer b oil pick up but heard great things about the IAG one. killer b equal length headers to save cylinder 4. Front mount intercooler. I have a stock oil pump but I I will go bigger when I go fully built! For internals I have kings bearings and ARP head studs. Making 303 at the wheels tuned on 92. Fun but reliable! F what people say about subarus and STIs. Just have to know the platform 😁 @@JonathanLopez-rg8le
@JonathanLopez-rg8le
I have just got my wrx back from the tuner, new genuine EJ207 block with ARP headstuds, RCM head gaskets, 11mm oil pump and killer b pick up. Should be fairly reliable running 20PSI on a TD05
Who here is praying he starts that baby up! My God what a beautiful motor, those CNC heads are gorgeous! This is such a beautifully well-designed engine build.
I love Mike! He looks like he just told a dad joke and is waiting for you get it while holding in his snickering.
I bet you donut media didn’t built the engines like this great man
Donut media builds engines to blowup so that cab make more content so does Devin
That’s because Donut doesn’t really know Subarus, nor did they put the time into them when they did their videos. They are mostly Honda guys and put more time and money into their Honda builds. No hate, just truth and fact.
Mike is Yoda.
I would love to watch an hour+ long video of mike just going over suspension geometry, it would be great if he was able to get underneath a car again and physically point out parts and explain what they do, how they do it, and best practices. I do my due diligence when it comes to learning about performance but suspension geometry just seems so daunting. Thanks MotoIQ!
And here I was hoping to rebuild my own Subaru myself. I’ve seen many people do 450whp dyi builds so I was really hoping to rebuild mine with a blown headgasket.
You can with correct machine work.
This guy posts some of the most articulate and well thought out videos you can ever watch on this subject. Too bad its so expensive to cover all your bases. Unfortunately I like so many others are limited by money, and am forced to just buy a plain Jane forged shortblock and say my prayers. 😂
If it is built by a reputable Subaru tuner, that is not a bad way to go.
@@motoiq Does stock TSI are still more reliable than buildet subies?
The engine is, the rest of the car no.
Do you guys make a reasonable package for ejs that you sell?
@@jf5600 define "Reasonable" for you. and didn't they just go through that? (albeit: for them, and their goals)
I find these cars are the most balanced when you’re at 300-330whp. all the reliability upgrades like AOS, cylinder 4 cooling mod, EL headers, oil sump and oil pickup are a must. I also use water methanol to further reduce detonation. Great video! I always learn something new every time!
Agreed. That’s the power level I had the best time with (in a version 8 jdm sti), 250kw at the wheels. I did mainly hillclimbs and short sprint events and it worked well.
It really all depends on what you intend to do with the car. If you only plan to do "spirited driving" and light tracking every now and again, then taking out a second mortgage probably isnt the right path. Chasing ridiculous numbers is a fools game. Sure you can get 1000+ hp, but then you cant drive it around, or in this case let your daughter drive it daily.
Careful with the cooling mod. My tuner said he did testing on his own vehicle with it and it caused more problems than it solved.
All that for 300whp 😂😂😂😂😂
That is not true, this car has it and its fine, and it runs really cool until it gets over 100 degrees at high boost at the track. That's why we have 3 different maps
I didnt even know these guys are right down the street from me 😊
This man is a legend. Motivation to make my car more clean. This is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Beautiful build and so knowledgeable its insane! I love this youtube page
But for 500hp looks like very deep pockets for everything done to it.
this was the best Subaru build break down I have ever seen
Met this guy at button willow not knowing who he was. Very down to earth guy. Now I’m here watching his hour long videos and I feel like we’re best friends 😂
I'm not too sure I've seen any other videos for other car manufacturers on how to build them so they don't blow up except for Subaru but of course they don't suck they just have to be built a very specific certain way lol
Subarus do run great after you replace everything. 😂 Love the videos and the car man!
Minus labor and cost of the car how much $ is into this super reliable track ready STi?
I'd be interested to see where this falls money wise compared to other chassis like the EVO, Focus RS or just buying a 911.
I was thinking the EXACT same thing. New IAG case, forged pistons. Headwork, cams, AOS, flex fuel, injectors, radium pump and surge, aftermarket coilpacks, new turbo... To get all that in your car, tuned and running? 20k easy..
If you did it all at once in one big hit, something like 35k. This car was built over 10 years though. Stupid hobby huh?
@@motoiq Stupid, no way! You love what you love and a man needs his hobbies. I prefer OEM+ builds over bought and the ride of "feeling" each mod along the way is why many of us do what we do!
@@motoiqAverage price for a new car is near $50k now, and that 35k over 10 years is less isn't bad at all if you think about it on a per year cost... Way less than a car payment!
I did pretty much the same path with my car.. like 80% of it. Not know much I did ask a lot of questions and sometimes I was treated like I was over spending on the project.. today I hace a 570whp on ethanol and 470 on pump gas… the car is running good since 3 years ago and believe me when I say I drive it hard I do without getting worry about it… great content… thanks for sharing your knowledge !!!
Hey I just got my car built, can I dm u with questions?
That is such a beautiful Subaru! I bet it's great fun on the track too
This is one amazing buiild... I want it! (And I don't even race, or speed, or anything.) There is so much information packed into this video, I learned things I didn't even know I needed to learn; multiispark coils, baffled oillpan, chasis stiffeners, and it just goes on. Great video; I'm glad you included a drive. (He describes it a kind of "OEM-plus build! This thing is tricked out to the max!)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Awesome video!
Merch ordered, not much but hope it helps!!!!
Beautiful car and a great channel full of knowledge every time.Thank you guys
Love watching your guys video's. I always come away with something to think about and learn.
Great video and knowledge! You're an icon in the community. Thank you for your contributions
I just enjoy listening to Mike talking about technical stuff although i have no plans to do anything. Great story telling
I don't even have a subaru and I've saved this to a playlist. So much gold in this video for enthusiasts of any level.
Loved this video, thank you for making so much great content, especially Subaru related stuff. 👍😊
Very good informative video, thanks for sharing!
Great build, thanks for sharing! Looks fast indeed!
Back in 2001 I built a 450hp/405 ftlb 1994 GC8 on 30psi, stock crank, stock 5sp trans with heavy clutch and thrashed it for 8 years no problems. Wish I never sold it.
Incredible analysis on the car, I had never thought so many elements go into a build…you’re educating me, thank you
I love it. Great comprehensive job👍
Another great video Mike and the team at Moto IQ. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
This is awesome info. Would love to see this type of vid for all their shop cars
I absolutely love and respect your efforts to be humble when showing off your awesome application of engineering and science with your builds. This is the exact aspect of Motorsport I am passionate about myself and have really enjoyed your content and education . Thanks !
Finally watched the whole thing! Thanks for the upload! 05's ARE the best!
Awesome videos on this STI! I'm always consuming & digesting these videos as a 18 VA STI (mechanically stock) owner myself. Would love to see a video where you take this thing on the track for a day because it looks awesome and it drives awesome, it's a shame we couldn't see more, I was really enjoying watching you rip it on the street, please post more! lol Take it to the track and record it, and please share it with us! Please & Thank you.
Listening to this sooths me. Its a go to channel for a bedtime story. Keep up the great work
Being an STi owner, these are some of the only guys I listen to when it comes Subaru Sti's! Great Video as usual!!
I recently acquired a very nice stock 2004 sample. There are some great information here! Such great advice, especially under the car.
Thank you for this wonderful information 😊
I love this build. Exactly the kind of build I like to drive.
What would be great is to have the full list of parts used and an overal cost for the build as a general info.
Great video, I could listen to this guy for hours.
Love these videos. Now lets see you guys put all this reliability to the test. Track videos, drag, touring tips. I would love to follow the story of this car and see all this information tested in the real world over alot of miles! Love the content ❤
Mike is such a nerd a love it! So much valuable info, thank you sir!
Thanks Mike! Cheers!
Thanks Mike for thinking about us 😂
Lightly tuned legacy owner 😅
"crackle tunes, hella flush..." gotta love mike! HAHA
'07 spec b lgt MT owner here too
Thanks for sharing, I think this is the information that needs to be shared. Going 10milion Hp, is not really the answer. Having a realistic goal and understanding limitation will help accomplish a great, reliable build. I have been following you since I was young, now I'm a dad and I pass your knowledge onto my kids...and they are also part of the subie nation
this is a well built Sub. 520bhp is enough. realistically speaking, more power isn't needed. this is a total package👌🏾
So much great info! Always liked these for their CG. Y'all should try out the Re-71RS
Great video, thank you
Yes thank you for the test drive!! My God I love the sound of that car it sounds seriously exotic!
Long live the STI! Building my own “sti” at the moment but it’s not the same haha. Still love my car. Thanks for the vid guys
Thanks so much, this is really good content 👌👍
I love this Crystal Grey Metallic GD!! Beautiful looking STI, awesome build, and great knowledge being shared! Thanks.
Agreed, silver really bring out the shape without being to inyourface like wrc blue
Same for
Me when I get home I’m gonna write stuff down and make a plan
More subaruuuu content let’s gooooo!!!, grabbing a iag950 soon 6466ng and it’s party time🎉 keep the vids coming 🤘
very cool, very informative. I like this guy.
Dude you are the man, keep the videos coming!
Great video... Theres an intuitiveness with all vehicles. If you know you're car well you can push it. It's something you feel though.. it's not something taught. Ive gone from Hondas to Subarus which have all seen track days and ive yet to catastrophically pop one. Now I have an Alfa though which has also been tracked... Gluton for punishment I suppose.
This is my first time seeing a full screen shot of Mike and I never pictured him wearing tapered black jeans and vans. You’re the man Mike.
This video completely changed my perspective on how an well balanced all purpose Subaru should be built. Granted I have a 2019 WRX, but this video has made me appreciate looking to build that comfortable 500-600 whp setup now.
Thanks for visiting the "Dahm Den" that vid brought me here. Knowledgeable guy!! Awesome content.
I had a 04 GDB STi with the EJ207 ran it with a PE1820 turbo at 1.4bar drove it hard and tracked it regularly, had it for 8 years without having to rebuild it at all..
Dang this a movie!! Love the content! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm new to the Subaru community! All I can say is I'm glad I found this channel! I'm in a dilemma and I hope you get some guidance advice? My first subie was a 01 forester and I just picked up an 08 sport Forester. I fell in love with off road and still love street. Which car should I off road vs street ? Can you do an equivalent build but for off-road? 👀
Love seeing Mike drive the cars at the end of the day. Cool seeing him enjoy and rip on them.
Not the crossover I would have expected, but I’m sure happy it happened.
Dude. You're a technical genius. What a great video on a great GD STi build!
Xclutch sprung twin organic clutch and flywheel is amazing best one hands down!
Me and my brother both drive an Impreza. We've never had any issues but I'd like to tweak my fb20d engine a bit
Cool deal i have a 2021 Crosstrek and keep it protected with Amsoil and it runs great i have 43k on it now changed all my fluids to Amsoil and wow what a difference it has made stays cooler oil is always at 190 degrees and stays cool and my fuel economy has improved as well.
i just noticed the scoop, actually looks really nice and oem.
Legit dream car except I wouldnt be able to help myself and would have to keep unequal length headers haha
Man, this has gotta be the perfect high hp street and track STi build. No stone left unturned, everything done to the highest level. I would only argue with the EL headers vs UEL but even that only on the basis of that iconic rumble. Hard to argue with efficiency though. Beautiful
So what I took away from this is looking cool is more important than sounding cool. We will give up efficiency in suspension but not in exhaust.
Epic video. Your video with rotary Rob sent me down this new rabbit hole.
Don't get me wrong, this car handles extremely well and this ride height is perfect for track use, for rough roads it could be a little higher.
Fantastic video. Couple of questions for you, with the rear diff lock out bolts, are stiffer diff carrier bushings even necessary? Do you lose the added rotation that the big rear sway bar brings when you go big in the front also? The old autox trick on these was to maintain the stock front sway, but I'm curious on your perspective there.
One inch of free uncontrolled movement can't be good. The diff carrier is separate from the crossmember. I think the front bar is a tradeoff for cars that roll a lot and loose camber from the roll, so the understeer created by that is worse than the understeer from the front bar.
Love this.
Mike and MotoIQ, thanks for the video and kudos on the car. She's a beaut! Question: Which of the mods you fitted to the car were sponsored and which did you purchase at full retail price?
I don't even remember exactly, the car was built over 10 years and why does this even matter? Nothing ever is free.
Mikes knowledge base 👌👌👌
I love this channel man....!
36:00, The nature of Subaru's boxer means that primary and secondary imbalances are cancelled out. Might be a strong factor for the lack of vibration despite hard mounts.
You talk about the issues of a flat engine. I am curious what Porsche does to fix, or work around these issues? Love your work!
The Porsche engine is built a lot stronger.
500 hp is excellent. Nice. Great work.
This guy is awesome, much better than the bs guys
I feel like Mike is giving me all the hot gossip. I could listen to this guy all day long.
Amazing!
1:00:08 !!! This is something I've never heard anyone express, but that I've thought of myself. So I had an Outback XT with the 5 speed and a cobb short throw. It shifted terribly and would even grind at times. Now that trans is in a different car with a longer shifter and it shifts just fine. It seems to me that the reduced leverage of a STS causes the syncros in a 5 speed to not work as well, which leads the drive to just drag against them like slipping a clutch. IMO for 5 speeds, keep that shifter stock, just stiffen the bushings for better feel.
We adjusted it so the motion ratio was almost the same as stock for that reason but we benefit from the better bushings on the Cobb.
@@motoiq I appreciate the validation! I built my own tall sorta normal-throw shifter with solid aluminum bushings for the old GL that this transmission ended up in. Shifts good and falls right to hand for a nice race car feel.
What a humble sounding subaru. Use to Subarus with 300 wheel sounding so violent
Love this STI one of my favorite street/race one! You guys should let some of the other youtubers drive it in the canyons or something to get more views heading your way
Super nice build Mike. Sounds angry when you get on it!❤
What a great video so in depth love the Subaru platform it's great if done right. Question what's your thoughts on group n trans mounts I want to update mine on my V3 sti. Do you think there will be minimal nvh
Dunno, the IAG ones are not bad.
Group-N mounts have minimal NVH increase. I highly recommend them, and they are inexpensive too.
The Group N engine, transmission, and pitch stop mounts are fantastic upgrades that have minimal increase in NVH. Being OEM, the fitment is perfect, and as@@stevemartegani says, they are quite affordable. For a street or even track car, I cannot recommend them enough. I have them on all my Subarus.
Awesome!
The best video/tutorial on a EJ. Does this vehicle pass CA Smog?
Could you link to the video you mentioned, were your friends made the fog light scoop? It sounds pretty good, curious how it was done.
motoiq.com/3d-printing-an-oil-cooler-duct-with-bd-engineering/
That is pretty in depth agree with most of it granted I have 2008 not 05. Do you have a video on must haves upgrades for 2008 WRX?
Thank you
This video A lot of intel but still a strong sense of sales pitch because lack of detail why made that descision .
My personal opinion is there are tons of details why we used those parts, it's why we did the whole video. I could build a car with totally different parts for about the same price and same performance. The parts would be of equivalent quality. Something like CP, Wiseco, Mahle instead of JE for pistons, Out Front Motorsports instead of IAG for the case, Carrillo instead of Callies for the rods, ACL instead of King for the bearings, Ohlins instead of KW for shocks, Brembo instead of stoptech for the brakes, etc
Great video. Love the info. I have a 2002 JDM Subaru STI with a built engine but my turbo has died (had on a Blouch Dom 3) so i am considering this Precision turbo as a replacement but I am curious if there will be a fitment issue as I am still running a TMIC (Process West)
No it is a direct bolt in
@@motoiq Thanks. Would you mind sharing the dyno graph. I would love to see the powerband. My car is a JDM STI but i have in a built EJ257 with hybrid pistons to drop the compression as i still running the original heads although they have been ported and mildly cammed (Kelford 264 / 260 Hot Street). Is it possible that the lower compression would make this turbo laggier?
motoiq.com/project-gd-sti-we-dont-need-a-damn-rotated-mount-turbo/ We made more but turned it down for the article just to be reliable with heat.
