I love Dr. West-I love his beautiful soul-mind and spirit. Unfortunately this audience does not seem to perceive that they are listening to a modern day prophet that is trying to help them understand the Horrors of Racism, Hate, Indifferance. They seem as though they would rather be entertained, laugh and forgo listening to someone who wants them to talk to them about going deep inside themselves, really deep inside to see if there is some way we can decide to change, grow and reflect on ways in which we can transform ourselves and evolve into something positive, beautiful and lovely. Interesting talk. I think he's definitely right about people needing to tackle issues instead of side-stepping them and growing complacent. We need empathy and understanding above all things right now. We have to listen to how people feel, not tell them how they're supposed to feel.

Being from the south and seeing the remanence of the damages from our treatment toward Black America race still matters. Personally I readily bear the burden of reproach of the generation before me. While one cannot undo or be responsible for the many generations before one should and can be accountable for their on recent history.For every unkind word that is uttered out of white america it keeps relations in a pre 1950s era.

I saw him give this same speech at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut to a packed house. I took the day off work and it was well worth it. Please get a copy of this book and do as I do and carry it around for reference.
"He or she who has never despaired has never lived." This was part of the closing thoughts of Dr. West's speech delivered in April of 2001.
Now, nineteen years and two months later, the nation, as a collective whole, seems to be experiencing the meaning of this phrase...

I was making myself a fruit salad during the introduction so can't speak to that, but I just wanted to say that Cornel West is a hero to people like me, too, and by that I mean white, female atheists. He speaks to everyone who has any love for humanity, and he does it inclusively, making everybody feel welcome and understood. He is an antidote to the tribalism and divisiveness so prevalent in modern American discourse. I only discovered him a few years ago, because he was campaigning for Bernie Sanders, and now he's my second favorite living celebrity, after Noam Chomsky.

This is a lecture and a sermon. It is pure poetry. It is operatic. Dr Cornel West does not speak as much as he sings. His speech has musical cadence, phrasing, light and shadow. He roars and he whispers. He is enthralling. He demonstrates the difference in tone between regular speech and exalted speech, that English has formal as well as informal, which we have mostly forgotten. The result is that he takes on the cloak of authority, like a prophet. He reminds me what it means to be human.

I'm glad to see Brother West give a definition of spirituality that doesn't exclude materialist (not in the consumerist sense, in the sense that matter is ultimately the only "stuff" that exists) atheists. The religious community needs to do that more.

Will all due respect, if I hear well @32:50, I believe Dr Cornel West missed a historical fact when he said, "never in the history of the modern world had been a shift from slave status to citizen status." No, Haitian revolution in 1804 proved otherwise. Former slaves became citizens and created a nation, the first black republic in the world.
And America embraced the Haitians government that willed itself into existence.

This guy! What an inspirational figure. He is not only teaching about the flaws and misconceptions that we dont normally question. You gotta understand there is nothing wrong with the ideal of race. There is nothing wrong with the integrity of difference, when supremacy is in play and is prevalent, with the order of assimilating and colonizing masses despite color , to believe that one race is superior over another that is when racism starts to unfold and develop. Indigenous people here we have battled, some have conquered land, there were casualty and captives of war, yet no one tribe rule the entire continent. No one tribe ruled other nations based on color, or superiority. That barbaric mentality manifested in civilization like Rome, the United States of America, in my opinion is like the descendant, the early descendant still young and in its prime, a descendant of Rome, and knowing the history of barbaric events and culture manifested, romanticized, taught, and celebrated, and even worshipped in Rome and the western part of the world, who's to say the American forefathers when they created this system did not look at each other and say metaphorically When in Rome do as the Romans do? Knowing that each and every race has specific and distinct characteristics despite the common gene pool, and humanistic traits, what exactly is wrong with the ideal of race? Its not race that is the problem, it is the supremacy that is the problem, it is the absence of the ideal of humanity that is the problem. Race is not a scientific ideals created by New Agers or a systematic pyramid chart of society, it is what it is, since the creation of man and woman, duality exist and has existed, race and distinction both exist and has existed. That's just natural cause of humanity, if we were fully mix and integrate culturally then what will we be? Without distinction and the integrity of difference, how can there be a self defined and independent humanity? Race gives you distinction, race gives you culture, supremacy takes away from the idea of race itself, supremacy is that mixing and melting pot, if a supremacist wanted to create an all one color one race world, what is one way that they could go about that? one way of course would be genocide, and that genocide doesn't just mean killing off the entire race through means murder, plague, chemical warfare, Etc. But the same way the Spaniards did Latin America and the natives there, by mixing their blood with theirs in an attempt to completely deplete and wipe out an entire race. So tell me, just because an individual claim they are for the better of man through the idea of integration culturally, does this mean that they are not a supremacist? And just because an individual is for the idea of race distinction , does this mean that they are a supremacist?
