  • UK Grad students from various mental health professions talk about why they chose their particular mental health field and what prospective students should know about their profession. You may also listen to this panel as an audio-only podcast by downloading this mp3: drive.google.com/file/d/18NoT...
Panelists shown in this panel are Zakary Clements of the UK Counseling Psychology PhD program, Emily Atkinson of the Clinical Psychology PhD program, Jordan Finley of the School Psychology PhD program, Kimberly Erick of Social Work MS program, and Raven Hudson of Mental Health Counseling MS program. They answer questions surrounding the qualities, commonalities, and qualifications of each career path. This allows comparison between each mental health field.
    Questions addressed by panelists included:
    1. Introductions - name, pronouns, mental health field and program, educational and career goals.
    2. We know that there are several applied mental health fields, and a variety of programs with varying emphasis areas within each of the mental health fields. Before we talk about the characteristics of your specific program, let’s talk about the nature of your broader mental health profession. Specifically, why did you choose to enter the mental health profession that you did rather than one of the other mental health fields? For example, you might speak to perceived strengths or characteristics of your field, as well as what knowledge and skills are emphasized in your field’s approach to graduate training and providing mental health services to the public.
    3. After people graduate from a program like yours, what are the typical next steps related to getting certified and/or licensed in the state you want to practice in?
    4. After people graduate from programs like yours, what kind of jobs do they do? What kind of tasks do these jobs entail and in what types of settings does this work occur?
    5. Why did you choose your specific program over other programs within your chosen field? What factors most influenced your decision?
    6. What is something undergraduate students considering going into your profession need to know? For example, you might talk about things you wish you had known, or the personal abilities and attitudes that are essential to have if a person wants to thrive in your profession and training environment?
