Logic Drummer Vs. Steven Slate Drums (I still love you, Kyle ❤️)

- A friend of mine mentioned a few weeks ago that if I'm going to use MIDI drums then perhaps I should consider checking out Steven Slate Drums. Well, as you'll learn from the video, I downloaded SSD 5.5 and I found it to be quite the learning curve. I think that's why many of us are so grateful for the Logic Drummer, it does all the routing, EQ and compressing for you...oh and writes the parts too! Amazing.
But I felt my mixes were starting to need closer attention in the rhythm section. So I gave SSD another try and I am so glad that I did.
So these are my findings! If you know of other tips and tricks to level up the drums again, I'd love to know about them! Leave a comment :-)

The "snare" (combo of snare and effects) sounds killer!!! Nice work
Thanks so much!!
I'm still discovering how powerful the built in Drummer is. I'd also love to see a Studio Kit given a fair chance against SSD and the like. With the same amount of attention you gave to SSD, I'll bet you could get Kyle and the gang to sound pretty close to SSD, if not as good as. Great vid! Sub'd :-)
Thanks so much Joe! Oh yeah, I’m sure the stock studio crew have plenty of smack in them 😎 appreciate the sub!!
Liking the vibe of this channel. Enjoyed the way you did this shootout and definitely nice to hear a channel where the music isn't painful to listen to, subbed
Ahh you’re too kind, thank you! More stuff coming soon 😊 thanks for sticking around!
Thanks for this video! GREAT channel! Liked and subbed!!
Wow thank you so much Brandon! Appreciate you, man!
Fantastic mixing
Thank you my friend!!
HUGE guitar tones! Whats the natural wood guitar you're using for the leads? are these amp sims?
I finally got SSD Trigger after growing sick of Drumagog crashing in protools. Heard great things about the SSD collection. Great comparison Robby!
Guitar is made by Sefton Guitars (Joel Kosche)
STL AmpHub and basically stock settings on a Soldano and Orange inspired amps 🙌🏻
Yes, I’m patiently waiting for trigger to be $49 again sometime, then I’ll pull the umm, errr...trigger 😂
After finally routing and getting the template to work, I’m pretty stoked on this and for free too! Very tempted at the whole bundle for sure!
@@CantAffordToRecord Yeah I grabbed it on Black Friday, Usually goes on sale once a year. totally worth it.
Unreal they sound so crisp and tight, great playing!
Which you had given the producer kit a chance as well.
Yes, I do like the producer kit possibilities too, perhaps that’s something to revisit for a future video 🙃
Hey there, thanks for being into rock and not hip hop 👍 With Logic drummer is there a way to match a simple beat in your mind with drummer’s presets? I turn off all the fills and complexity just to try and find something as simple as boom-bop-boom-boom-bop or other basic beat. I try all the different drummers and presets. Sometimes i find something that has the feel i want but it usually takes so long. I’m talking simple beats that any real drummer would know in an instant. I got so frustrated i bought a midi keyboard just to punch in the beats with my fingers. Yes, i know you can convert a drummer region to midi and edit it, but i really want to scream at Kyle and say “no! do it like this!” 🤯
Hey Steve, Thanks for watching :-)
Kyle (and the gang) can be a little too clever at times and like you, I've often just wanted a simple rock beat. As far as I know, aside from moving the dot on the complexity gauge and turning off your fills, you're gonna need to (as you said) convert to midi and then do some moving and removing.
Maybe you might need to go this route one more time, save that sucker then re-call that template or session whenever you need just a simple groove! Hope this helps, thanks for your comment!
@@CantAffordToRecord Thanks, i just saw something about using the “follow” function. I’ve tried that - to follow the bass track or the rhythm guitar, but i didn’t really explore that completely, but i will. But just now i saw someone use the follow function to follow another drum track. Drummer seemed to match the beat and then add it’s own fills. So i’m thinking i might make a simple loop (or get one from the library) and have drummer follow that. If that doesn’t work i guess i’ll have to get good with the keyboard or a midi touchpad or even get a set of electronic drums (which would suit me fine except for the cost). 🙀
Good luck with it all :)
Can someone clarify, can these drums be edited in a daw? Iv heard people say they have issues to eq and compress
Can you not take parts of the drum set like you would a real recording and edit it however you want in your daw?
You can have the tracks ‘bounce in place’ which will turn the individual tracks in to waveforms :) you may need to choose ‘Create track’ by right clicking on the drum elements from the mix window first
How do you add the snare and kick you layered with SSD 5.5 Free ? Because, you can that inside SSD. I have the complete SSD 5.5 (the pay version) and I made my own kit lyering differents kicks and snares. SSD does the job automaticaly. Awesome .
Without re-watching it a little I believe I didn’t layer the kick and snare with SSD and I used the Logic Pro ‘sampler’ to trigger those extra layers.
SSD is awesome, I might have to buy the real thing some day!!
@@CantAffordToRecord You won't regret it ! Diclaimer : I don't work for Steven Slate ;-)
