Приєднався 10 лип 2020
Can't Afford To Record is a UA-cam channel where we learn the art of audio production together. I love playing guitar and recording, mixing and producing music. Can't Afford To Record focuses on not knowing all the secrets of music production...but figuring them out 😎
I mixed a song recorded on toy radios 😳 FREE Multitracks! Ft.Weird & Wired
It was SO much fun collaborating with my good friend Danny Young on this song and video!

I downloaded Reaper 2 weeks ago. I like it, very customizable. But there is one big flaw : you can't import OMF, AAF or XML! What the fuck is that?
I'd honestly post this into the REAPER Facebook group and I wouldn't be surprised if someones figured out a work around
I don't care
and yet, here you are...
Cool but the download tracks folder is empty!
Just tried downloading it myself and all tracks are there for me! Send me an e-mail to cantaffordtorecord@gmail.com and I'll try to get you them another way!
Your video would be a lot more effective if you turned that annoying background music off! It's terrible.
Thanks George!
Love the lo-fi garage rock vibe. Experimentation is the mother of invention.
Thanks for stopping by and yes, I totally agree!!

I have used and taught them all - except maybe Ableton (which I can see has some advantages making it a bit unique) - I still prefer Cubase hands down but Reaper is my go to recommendation for next best thing - and better when on a budget!
I am no power user but went from Adobe Audition to Protools (briefly, the subscription was not worth it for me) to Audacity to Reaper... and Reaper stuck best for me. Best way I could show my gratitude and preference was by purchasing licenses. I was always a strong advocate of Reaper for the last 7 years. Not one crash yet... so there... lol Shout out to Kenny, besides how good Reaper is, he is the #1 asset Reaper has... love those vids!
Reaper crashes on me too many times to count. If anyone has any advice please let me know.
Interesting! Reaper is always held high for not crashing, ever! And while that can't be true all the time (obviously) I have found it pretty solid! I wonder if your sessions are too plugin heavy for the computers capabilities? Also could be one rogue plugin causing trouble?
Pro tools is the Boomer of DAWs.
It makes you younger 😉 put it inside an acoustic guitar.
Ha! That sounds like a fun idea!
I remember someone using one for recording acoustic guitars Supposably they sound good for this use
Interesting, I'll give that a go!
me too, after all of those other ones, sonar>cubase>ptools>logic>REAPER !!!
Had one of these when I was young, didn't realize what I had, over the years I never had another amp that even came close. Now I make sure I keep a heritage VTX 212 in my arsenal. The best amp on the planet.. by far ..
They rock!
same here!! I bought mines when I was still in high school. used it to gig for a few years. I knew it was great and I loved it, but I really wish I would've held on to it.
Just started to use this having been out of music production (hobbyist) for a long time. Decided to go with Reaper due to the cost and reputation as a good performer. Was worried that a lot of people say it's complex to use compared to others. I've going by the what I don't know doesn't hurt me and resigned to a steep learning curve. Got some free VST instruments to play with. Surprised me how good to can get for free. So far, I'm loving it. Still very early days so I'm learning, the wealth of videos and tutorials really help. About two weeks in now and I will purchase a licence now i know I like it and the very reasonably price. On with the music 😁🎸
That's awesome! Congrats 😄
Just discovered you channel....the shorter beard is better...now back to learning Reaper.
I was too busy in Reaper and before I knew it, I had that beard!
I've had a Reaper license for years, as I've gone from Sonar to Studio One and now Logic Pro. It's like the friend who adores you, but you are oblivious as you look for love in all the wrong places.
...and who will always wait for you, for when you're ready which is why sooner or later, inevitably everyone switches to Reaper ❤️
interesting to see
The Kemper Stage is the best one. Way lighter and put in a soft case. I use mine on a laptop stand so i can see it with my aging eyes. i use it for bass and guitar and it's unbelievable. don't think too much about how it works ha ha. Just enjoy the sounds and don't fool with it too much. Good profiles (aka the ones you pay for, it's only like $20) don't need tweaking like Top Jimi. In a band setting it's magic. You can use it with an amp for practice if you need to, just neutral the tone controls and turn the gain off. BOOM YAY
Tried it just don't like it. I expect to be able to load a project and see buttons that control everything I need first hand. Reaper is not like that. It starts as this tiny box that has to be expanded just to see any of its features On top of that you have to do a TON of reading trying to figure out where all the functions are. It's ridiculous. Sorry Just don't like it. Nuendo, Cubase and Studio one are all the type Of DAWs I am talking about. Much easier to learn up front. I don't like to read a book of directions just to figure out the routing LMAO It's just too different than the others.
It's not for everyone, and that's fine :-)
I think it’s a great unit and has many many possibilities and is very versatile. However, I can’t justify the upgrade living in Canada of nearly $600 added to the nearly $1100 I paid for the unit went for $1700. I can buy a used rack mount.
Totally fair! I did a video about my thoughts on the upgrades too!
Thanks.
Is reaper good for recording real instruments and live audio?
Yes!
Save yourself some money. I had a guy bring a UA Solo 610 into my studio. I compared it side by side with my ART Digital MPA II, and they sounded IDENTICAL. You'll get TWO channels of digital and analog connectivity for $600 instead of $1400. If you want the portability, get the Focusrite ISA One. It sounds WAY better than the Solo 610.
That's awesome! I love the ART stuff!
how did you do that color automation based on name? that's sick!!!
It's an SWS extension called 'Auto Color/Icon/Layout' 🙂
Just wondering how you're connecting the live room xlr panels to the patchbay? are you patching the mic lines to preamps on the patchbay? how does that work with phantom power? Thanks
Hey! The live room patch panel is physically connected by a cable that runs under the floor to the patch bay. Think of it like a snake with 24 XLR cables: on one end, you have the patch panel with 24 XLR male connectors, and on the other end, you have the wiring that’s soldered directly to the patch bay's "Studio Floor" patch points. Hopefully, that paints a clear picture, haha. The "Studio Floor" patch bay is set up as "half-normalized," meaning it automatically connects to the corresponding "SSL Mic Pre" unless you insert a patch cable to break the connection. If you look up terms like "Normalized," "Half-Normalized," and "Open" patch bays, you'll get a better idea of how patch bays are configured in professional studios. Regarding phantom power, just make sure it's engaged at the preamp stage. Phantom power is essential for condenser mics to work, so if it’s not enabled, you won’t get a signal. Hope this helps! 😁
@@corybergeronrecordings hey thanks for the reply. I guess I was wondering if the mics are hitting the ssl then line level to the patch bay. If it’s just mic level to the patch bay how do you patch it to a preamp and send phantom power via TT?
Reaper was an easy choice for me. Buy once and I'm good for 2 versions. Also, not a subscription, so the worst case, it's another piece of software that I'm hoarding.
god no, not for all the money of this world, i would use reaper :D
Great video, Robby! If anyone has any questions, I'll be hanging out in the comments and happy to answer! 😁
One more thing is I have two patchbays running all inputs on top and all outputs on the bottom. That makes things easier when routing.
Hey! On our patchbay, the inputs are on top and the outputs are on the bottom. I believe standard studio protocol is actually the reverse (inputs on the bottom, outputs on top). I didn’t personally wire this patchbay. It’s also worth noting that this setup is configured in a way that’s half-normalized. Simply put, this means that if you plug a microphone into input 1 on the patch panel of the live room, the signal will automatically be routed through channel 1 of the SSL and then into channel 1 of the I/O unless you manually interrupt the signal flow at any patch point on the patchbay. In the exercise I created for Robby, I intentionally routed the signal all over the place to build a deeper understanding of the studio’s signal flow. Ideally, every piece of gear in a commercial studio would work as intended 100% of the time. However, it’s common enough for the signal chain to behave unexpectedly. By knowing where the signal is at every step of the way, you can quickly troubleshoot any issues and keep your session moving forward.
@@corybergeronrecordings thank you for the education! I certainly appreciate you both!
Question, when using more than one patchbay does the second patchbay need to run through the first patchbay? Awesome video brother! Bonus question, does the SSL use Adat to connect the patchbays?
If you have two patchbays, you could certainly patch one into the other, but it’s not common practice to have multiple patchbays in a single studio. The goal of a patchbay is to serve as the central hub for all signal routing. The SSL has XLR and 1/4-inch outputs on the back, all of which are wired into the back of the patchbay. It’s A LOT of cabling.
@corybergeronrecordings thanks for the info. I have a home studio and have one interfaces that has two Behringer ada8200 mic-pres linked using Adat. So I have 24 I/O available to use. I ran out of I/O on the first patchbay so I connected a second one. Everything works when I have my DAW open. The second I close the DAW, I get feedback from a couple pieces of gear I have running through the second patchbay. I've learned to turn them off before closing out. I'm confused why that happens. I haven't had any luck figuring out why that happens. That's why I was asking if I needed to patch the two bays together. Maybe the signal gets cut off or something which is causing the feedback. Hell I don't know. Thanks for responding back.
Cheap, you OWN it, LINUX NATIVE, and incredibly feature rich and customizable. It really is great.
I use to always drive up from Cape Cod to the Boston and Providence area bars and clubs to see and usually hang out with Electric Angels,Throbs,LA Guns,Jellyfish,Black Crowes,Four Horsemen, Burning Tree,London Quireboys, Jayhawks,Matthew Sweet, Lemonheads,Wilco,Swinging Steaks,Mavericks,John Campbell, Chris Whitley,etc..... I still love and try to catch some of these bands when they come around.. 1990 was an amazing year for music.
That's awesome!! Thanks for sharing :-)
❤❤❤❤
Hey Robby, I learned something that relates to our conversation about this bus comp and wanted to share. Remember we talked about how this one isnt the same as the Townsend? I didnt know it but the Townsend is built from parts from an SSL4000B bus comp, not the 4000E! They're two different compressors! The B is warmer and gluier, and I learned yesterday that this one's great for the CLA squash technique that i could never get to work with the Townsend. Both great for the stuff they do best.
Very cool, Giselle! Thanks for reporting back!!
Such an enjoyable interview 👏 great stories and vibe, excited to hear the new music! 😎🎸

I'm never switching... I started with Pro Tools and I'll never leave
Good for you! I really liked Pro Tools too
I adore Reaper for mixing specifically. Thats all I do these days, and I find it more powerful and intuitive than Pro Tools in a mixing workflow. For creation, I love Ablerton or Logic - but mixing in ableton in untenable for me personally
Now you can play games and pick up the phone to roast someone when there doing something absolutely stupid😅
I had that exact unit, back in the 70's.
Amazing! How was it??
It was fun for that time., but the sound-on-sound (overdubbing) produces mono recordings only.
