I love watching videos like this. Man in my day things were so different. I like how young people today want lighter and lighter. I can't wait to see them talk about this when they are 60,70,80. When they have an artifical hip, knee, torn rotator cuff, arthritis, bursitis, then let's hear how light they can go lol. I should clarify. I love the idea. We didn't have an umbrella term urban sketching and we either carried a pen and drew on napkins or we carried a butt load of crap. This is great
Looks amazingly like my WC gear. Royal Talens Rembrandt box, Da Vinci brush .... but I love your sketchbook. I also love the Rembrandt flat WC brushes. Great video.
Thank you and well done! I very much appreciate your minimalist kit design as well as the description text listing out the tools. I'm often in the outdoors and wilderness for days and weeks at a time and though I love to sketch, draw and paint weight carried is a concern as well as room in the backpack - thus I'm usually having to restrict myself to a sketchbook, and a few pens & pencils. Oddly enough I was unaware until recently the compact carrier/pallet sets and travel brushes. I'll be ordering a compact set & brush for my next planned outing. Thanks again!
i really love how you have great advice, but also it's very practical. like you even mention how you can use the short stool to your advantage. great videos for everyone but especially a beginner like me!
I was curious about a video you may have created being able to sketch or painting with waterproof paper?? Also your video of tge Darcy field bag was much appreciated I love using mine outside. On a thrift shop I found a waist bag 🎒 that is tge size of an A5. With additional slot pockets. It matched tge Darcy so I sewed on the back pocket. Since it had a gusset the sketchbook or a tin of 12 color pencils fit nicely and stays closed with a velcro flap
When I travel, I bring along my Travelling Inkwell by Visconti for my fountain pen. The inkwell holds about 5.5 ml of ink. I also use the Pelikan M200 fountain pen. Love your artwork and your review of products are very informative and helpful.
Hi Teoh! Love your videos bro!! keep it up ^^ Can you talk about maintenance and cleaning involved with regards to your waterbrush, fountain pens, etc. Possibly in future videos?
Thank you for your wonderful videos. I came to this one after your amazingly comprehensive review of sketchbooks. I'd like to start doing more urban sketching and plein air artwork this video was particularly helpful. Thanks again.
Hey there! :) Just wanted to thank you for your super informative videos. I've been learning more about watercolor and plein air sketching lately, and your videos keep coming up as the most helpful. :) Cheers!
Hi Teoh. I am a novice painter and and would just like to know if using one bottle for washing brushes is enough for you. Water tends to get dirty very quickly, does it affect your painting?
I learned that the water must be kept clean. You first dip the tip of the brush in the bottle and then use the towel to really clean it. Only after that you completely submerge the whole brush. In my experience I don't use two bottles.
Your instructional videos are simple yet very informative. Being deaf, close captions are essential as you can imagine not always reliable either. Noodler's "bloodproof ink" I assume means floodproof ink? Noodler's has a thing for unusual names so I thought to ask. Can you please recommend some waterproof inks for sketching before watercolors? If only I could solve the leak issues for all my Noodler's pens. They work wonderful otherwise. I too have the same square palette and love it. I'd love to know the colors you use.
I find it very interesting that you use fountain pens as your drawing pens. I actually started with fountain pens for regular note taking and am now trying to pick up watercolor painting as a hobby. Can you explain your choice for using fountain pens to sketch?
Very nice. I've been very cheap with my sketchbooks - I use ones that aren't fit for watercolour. I'm rethinking that after discovering that my Moleskin Agenda does a much better job. Do you use gum arabic when you paint?
2:10...is that a Noodler's ink bottle? I like the idea of a strong glass vs plastic bottle for water storage...because the plastic would tip over if a strong gust of wind should happen. Plus, with glass you can see when it's time for a change of water. So, is that specifically an old Noodler's ink bottle or what brand is it? :) thanks.
What do you do when your small container of water gets muddy, do you continue to use it or do you bring a water bottle from home to replace the dirty water? I use water brushes when I travel but I love the results I achieve with my black velvet brushes that I've considered having a set up like yours with a small container of water, thanks for your advice☺️ your videos are great!!
+nancy marques I used to use a single container for washing brushes. That will make the water muddy. I bring water bottle to get clean water. Ideally, it is best to have two water container. One to clean dirty brush, they other to get clean water.
Teoh Yi Chie thanks Teoh ! I started thinking that a small travel thermos could work well - pour some clean water into the cap for painting and use the larger container for cleaning brushes 🤗
I'm now using a hat from Outdoor Research which can hold its shape better against wind and rain. It's more expensive but is very durable. Do compare prices before you buy. www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Research-Seattle-Sombrero-Medium/dp/B000TMIIB2
Thanks for this outdoor watercolor sketching kit video, but your two fountain pens are quite expensive. Can you recommend a decent inexpensive pen for a beginner? What was the name of the ink you use to refill your pens? Thanks! Paula in Florida
I am a chilean in israel, starting sketching and i cannot find any of those art supplies here. Thank you for showing us your talent. If you want to get rid of some of your stuff, i would love to know :) Much love.
Great videos. Thank you. I couldn't catch the name pf the waterproof ink you use in the fountain pens. Can you pass on the name. Thanks. Great drawings.
Noodler's Bulletproof Black. It's the only Noodler's black that says it's waterproof and is actually 100% waterproof. The others have some bleeding when wet, no matter how long you leave them to dry.
+hovawart16 As I usually sketch in A5-size sketchbooks, I use the size 6 watercolour brush. My main brush is the Da Vinci Maestro pocket brush. Escoda Reserva is similar to Da Vinci, just that the body for Escoda is longer. www.parkablogs.com/content/review-da-vinci-maestro-travel-pocket-brush
i use clips to hold down my watercolor paper, so it would seem like it’s tightly binded to the other pages. i’m a beginner so i use not so good yet not so bad watercolor paper, and when the paper is too wet, it tends to puff up, having an uneven surface. watercolor would then become very tricky because they tend to spread to places i don’t want to be colored. that’s why many people use clips or washi tape to their watercolor papers!
I always wonder where people put all their stuff when they do watercolor sketching outside. Do they look for a table or something like that? When I go outside to draw, I only have a sketchbook and a fineliner so I can draw pretty much anywhere I want and it doesn't matter if I stand or sit.
Hi Teoh :) I really love your art work and I love the way you show us everything around it, Thank you so much. Let me make two short questions: 1. Hi Teoh. I am a novice painter and and would just like to know if using one bottle for washing brushes is enough for you. Water tends to get dirty very quickly, does it affect your painting?
I use one bottle too. With one bottle, you have to plan in advance the colours to use to avoid having to wash the brush too many times.
Ah I see. Will give it a go when I get the chance. Thanks!

Very nice. I've been very cheap with my sketchbooks - I use ones that aren't fit for watercolour. I'm rethinking that after discovering that my Moleskin Agenda does a much better job. Do you use gum arabic when you paint?

@@teohyc Thanks Teoh! 🥰
Noodlers bottle?
Why the clips tho? Will wind damage the watercolor?
It's to clip and hold down the pages so they don't fly around. If a wet page hits the other page, it would be bad.
i use clips to hold down my watercolor paper, so it would seem like it’s tightly binded to the other pages. i’m a beginner so i use not so good yet not so bad watercolor paper, and when the paper is too wet, it tends to puff up, having an uneven surface. watercolor would then become very tricky because they tend to spread to places i don’t want to be colored. that’s why many people use clips or washi tape to their watercolor papers!
