Chase Sutherland Ha, ha. Yeah, you could be right. It is fun to see how small you can make a kit and have it still be useful. However, when I’m running out the door to a family gathering or somewhere where I will be sitting a lot, it’s nice to have a small ready-to-go kit.
Travel kits are my LIFE BLOOD. Seriously, it’s like everything to me. This is a really complete and well-rounded setup! I think possibly the bulkiest part of this set is the bag itself, and even that’s no so bad! Really love the magnet on your water reservoir! I’ve been toying with using those clip-on metal reservoirs that are generally meant to be used for oil painting and slid onto your palette, but using a water brush so often has made that take a back seat for now. Thanks for the tour! I’ll have to do something similar on my channel because I’m betting something I do will inspire someone else, just like your magnetized water cup has for me.
It's such a blast to see how much you can squeeze into a small footprint. These little kits, like this, have kind of reintroduced fun back into painting, for me. Looking forward to checking out your channel!
Brian Ashmore Studio truly, ive found that the more and more i simply my setup, the more and more joy it brings me, and the more likely I am to use it any time, anywhere.
I love how compact your kit is. I use a zipper type ziplock bag and this is even more compact if anything. I enjoyed the dog drinking loudly, made me laugh. :)
Yeah, it seems like my dogs ignore what I'm doing until I start trying to film something. Then, they want outside, get drinks 4 feet away, etc. Cant win. Ha, ha!!
I've just started dabbling with Art at 42 years of age. I'm kind of useless at it and I get disheartened but I am a firm believer in the old adage, " Practice makes perfect", so I will push on. Perhaps by retirement in 25 years time I will be able to sketch well enough to be satisfied with my attempts. This is a great video. I am thinking of building such a kit to get me out and about sketching and painting rather than sitting in the house. Especially during the spring/summer and autumn.
I just stumbled upon your video and man am I impressed! I too have purchased the Whiskey Painters boxes and received their plastic watercolor containers. I love how you magnetized the water container in addition to your pouch and collapsible water container. Bravo! ps: Excellent video. Thanks for posting!
This is one of my favorite set up's so far. Love researching these go art kits. The magnet on the small water pot is brilliant. 👍 Overall, it's easy to throw in any bag to create on the go. 👏👏
That's a nice little compact kit. I haven't gotten that small yet. I find six half pans to be the least I can work with, eight or twelve are better. I carry the travel brushes but would like a flat and I haven't found one yet. Plien air sketching on a small scale is about all I can get away with so I try to get a couple of photos before leaving the site.
I'm a new subscriber! Love your super compact watercolor kit and the way you explain things to the point, keeping it simple. Thanks for the inspiration 👌
Thank you for sharing! I do love seeing how different setups are for each person. You’re able to place so much in this little pack, it’s awesome. You also have some amazing work in your sketch book!
Great kit - gives me a few ideas. And I love your little watercolor sketches! Thanks very much for sharing your setup; you’re right, we are interested!
Pretty awesome setup. I’m an aspiring illustrator and your setup was very inspiring for me to do something similar. I’ve subscribed and look forward to more videos.
Thank you for sharing. I love viewing other’s little watercolor travel kits! You always find innovated ideas by those kind enough to let you peak inside. I have two travel kits myself, one is larger the other is about the size of yours. Both of these are equally as packed, lol.
I love those tiny palettes! I use a zipped washbag, and a tatami style brush mat with a couple of straight sided rigid plastic dessert cups on the ends, they slip in a small tote easy along with a watercolour book. I also swop palettes out as needed. I love your magnetised water pot. Great video....
Thank you for sharing your travel kit. Pretty nice and I enjoyed your rationale of why you carry specific items. I wish you the best on your new endeavor. God bless.//Chuck
That's brilliant how you unbent the clip. I have one of these cups and I never use it because when it's clipped to my sketchbook it takes up sketching room or drips onto the page, and also makes the pages all ratty. I've often wished I could clip it to the pallette but it never occurred to me to modify it this way. Thanks!
Sure! I was just messing around with it and trying to come up with something that would let me use a magnet and it just sort of worked out. Thanks for watching.
Love your mini kit and paintings--that magnetized water container is slick, definitely gonna try that! 👍🎨 I love art kits--I have a small, medium, and large kit depending on where I am and what I'm doing (have a video on it) and like you, I love watching these type of videos--thanks for sharing!
This was really great, I'm always trying (and failing) to downsize my travel art kits. I've not seen the Caran D'ache waterbrush pens, I've been using the Pental ones.
Kelly Bear Thanks! I really like the Caran D’ache brushes because they allow you to refill them easily on the go. Since they refill like a syringe, it’s easy to dip them, pull, and keep painting.
Hi Brian, this is a very inspiring video. Thanks for sharing such an awesome travel kit. Beautiful paintings too. I'm piecing together my own version but I can't seem to find a container similar to your screw top squat shaped water pot (I've got magnets I can use). Can you please suggest where I can find something like that?
Hi, I love your setup - I think it's the best one I've seen. I've been looking for a case like that and can't find one that matches - can you remember the type of Maxpedition case I should be looking for please? This is really useful - thank you very much!
Thanks for the video Brian. I'm a Maxpedition addict and was just looking at the pouches on Amazon. Wasn't sure what size to get for my mini palette, then found this video. Love how it's all contained, held in well and accessible. Kudos!😉
I've been searching for what seems forever for the reservoir jar with the metal clip thayou straightened and added a magnet. Do you know where I can find one for sale ? Loved your video. Its like a list of everything one needs to travel. Thanks for sharing.
You are inspiring! It becomes back breaking when i travel and want to bring my art kit.(Sakura Koi 24 is not small anymore!) Il try to follw your style. Love your artwork too!!! That dog!!
Brian Ashmore Studio yes it is! I have mine setup mainly because My husband wants me to go fishing with him. Inwant to paint so we comprised. And I have been watercoloring a lot more around out apt. I love sitting outside our do of just sketching & painting. I'm not very good at it but I'm getting better at it
Thank you Brian. An ingenious kit and a well presented video. Dog noises added homely touch. Would it be possible to add details of manufactured items such as the bag. Looks like Maxpedition? Not sure if possible to get in UK . I am a new subscriber and I shall be looking out for more of your videos. Cheers, Derek.
Diane Thoroughman. Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have a chart of my colors on the inside of my sketchbook if I need to refer to it. For the most part, though, I don’t use a lot of colors so it’s not too tough to keep them straight. 👍
I just found your channel - great video on your mini travel kit. I just tried out my new mini travel kit I put together from Art Toolkit - so I loved watching your take on an easy-to-bring watercolor kit! I would love to know where I can find that nifty little watercolor jar you created with the magnet, because that would make it so easy to use my good travel brushes instead of the water brush! Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks, Eva! I think I just picked up the little two cup "jar" either on Amazon or at Hobby Lobby. They are mainly made for oil painters but I found it to be a nice little way to hold water.
@@brianashmorestudio Thank you! I had to dig around a bit, but found what I was looking for on Jerrys Artarama - just ordered a bunch, because I am putting together wc travel kits for my upcoming watercolor pen & ink workshop & retreat next May in Carinthia, Austria! This is going to make my kits very special, and perfect! Thanks again!
I like your compact kit very much Brian. I am on an eternal quest to find the perfect mini kit which would let me paint on the go but every time I go to paint plein air, I end up carrying a large bag with many things which I "might" need :) I am inspired by your video to go light next time. Very nice and helpful video & thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! It IS tough to narrow things down and I feel like I could do a much better job myself. Like you said, it's tough to not include things that you think you might need... even if the chance is small.
Cool to see a Maxpedition pack used for a mini kit. And I really like the shampoo bottles. Do you mind sharing what brand the little water jar with the magnet is? I have a hard time finding anything similar here jn Holland.
I firmly believe that it's a sport to see how compact of a watercolor set someone can make
Chase Sutherland Ha, ha. Yeah, you could be right. It is fun to see how small you can make a kit and have it still be useful. However, when I’m running out the door to a family gathering or somewhere where I will be sitting a lot, it’s nice to have a small ready-to-go kit.
Brian Ashmore Studio Exactally! Its extremely useful having a small kit. Especially during long waits in a waiting room or at an airport.
hahaha yess still going on in 2024!
I've been binging on people's watercolor travel kits and this one is my favorite. It's so handy, it's cute and tiny, it's complete, and just... oooooo
Thanks very much! I've enjoyed using it.
This is one of the most compact, well-thought out paint kits i have ever seen. Well done!!
Great idea with the magnet on the medium cup.
Robyn Jorde Thanks, Robyn!
@@brianashmorestudio Would love to find one. Searched and searched.
I liiiiiive to see what others carry in their kits! Those shampoo bottles are genius! Thank you for sharing!

Love your mini art kit. You are very skilled and talented artists. I like all your work especially the truck.
Love the idea of the scrunchie to hold open the book, also straightening and adding a magnet to the water cup! You’ve got really nice DIY hacks.

Thank you for the inspiration, I made one very similar to yours for my six months backpacking trip here soon and been testing it out. Works great.
This is the most comprehensive travel kit I've come across in a while
The tiny water reservoir with the magnetic arm is so ingenious! Love it! 🥰
Very cool. Thank you for posting this kit tour.

I love your watercolor travel kit! It's perfection!! Thank you for sharing. New subscriber here :)
Thanks so much for subscribing!! I apologize for taking so long to respond. My comment notifications in UA-cam got turned off, somehow.
The way everything fits so nicely and compact, oh so satisfying
