Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it! I had fun making it too. :) And I looooove watching people's art bag videos too lol. It's so fun to see what works with other artist's art! Thanks again!
Hi Jaclyn I enjoyed your vide very much, thank you! I had an idea about the water issue: How about cutting a hole into the upper left hand corner of the board, measuring the diameter of the collapsible cup about 1 cm before it is at its largest before the top? That way you could unfold your cup, slip it into the hole and fill in the water. And the container would safely stay in place 😊
Great video! I think 2 neodymium magnets: one taped to your work board and one dropped in the bottom of the cup would work too secure the cup to the board.
You have enough room on your Plein Air board for small Double Stainless Steel Dipper Container Cup Pots Water Paint Palette Clip - with Lid. I got mine from Amazon. I made up a very similar art board as you made and I have enough room for my paint palette, water pots with lids with a clip and room for a small journal or paper. Also, I do have the Swedish clothes that you mentioned, but another hack that I learnt from someone else on UA-cam, is to purchase cheap Terry cloth sweat wrist bands, put on on your non-dormant wrist, and use this to wipe your brush on instead of a cloth. This gives you more room on your board and is easy to use. I use black ones so you can’t see the paint marks. When you get to your room, or home you can wash them clean and they dry quickly for your next Plein Air experience….This was a great video, well done 👍🏼 can’t wait to see your videos of painting on your holiday. Hope you have a great time. 😊🤗🇨🇦
Oh wow! I love all of these ideas! I'll have to look into the water cups with clips you mentioned and I love the wrist band idea a lot! Thanks for the tip on a black on so it doesn't look as messy. 🤣
Yes, I use those double clip-on water pots, too. With the lids you can put water in them before you go out. Also, the Art-Toolkit palette can be adhered just off the side of your board with 2 magnetic clips. I made my coroplast support board to fold in half by using white duct tape for the hinge. When it is open on my lap I put the water pot clips over the fold part to hold it open. Works a treat! I love looking at people’s plein air/travel setups and getting ideas.
I like the idea of having water in it already and then putting the cap back on so you pack out your water too! Great ideas! I hadn't thought of making a fold in half set up. That would make it even more compact to put in my bag. Wow such a great idea - thank you so much Arlene!!!
Jaclyn we have very similar tastes and setups I love your choices presentation and explanations one thing I’d like to share with you is that I have 1” square clips with a magnet on the back that I clip to my coroplast board and my art toolkit palettes stick onto it the other thing is that they have a flat clip and don’t mark the paper like the bulldog clips Also I don’t open my sea to sky cup all the way one click from the last one gives me a bigger more stable bottom, plus I also use one ounce Nalgene wide mouth bottle that I can hold in my left hand between thumb and forefinger and still hold my coroplast palette set up and carry my water out with me oh btw I also absolutely love my Princeton Neptune travel brushes 6 & 8 we are kindred spirits even if I am 77 happy painting oh PS Daniel Smith paints don’t need misting one swipe with a wet brush picks up tons of pigment and does wear even my finest Kolinsky brushes out 💖🥰💖
Thank you for all of your suggestions and tips!! I love the idea of a clip that won’t mark on the paper - such a great idea Susan! And I spray my Daniel smiths a lot just because I live in Colorado where it gets dry so easily! 😆 thanks for being here!
@@jaclynbaerart aha I live on the coast of British Columbia rain forest zone I guess that’s why I don’t have to spray my paints duh 🤪 Never crossed my mind until now thx for that info 🥰
What a beautiful place to live! I used to live on the Olympic Peninsula and didn’t realize how much moisture was in the air until i moved to Colorado last year! 😆
Just watched your video and like the idea of using the correlated plastic to clip your pallet to. I prefer painting in the travel journals but occasionally paint on paper cut to small size. I most often carry my water in a urine specimen bottle, believe it or not. Never leaks! Also, rather than paper towels, I have an old facecloth that I cut in half. It is rather colourful now with paint as I have used it for several years. Interesting what you can find if you need to scratch into the surface to create grasses or whatever. When in South Africa, I found a porcupine quill and it is still a treasure. Our kit is very similar. Enjoy your upcoming and future painting adventures!
Wow I love all your tips! Using an old facecloth is a great one to not use paper towels. I try not to use paper towels, but the one I have in my kit is a backup that's been in there for a while. lol. I love that you found a porcupine quill to scratch into your artwork - that's amazing and such a great memory every time you use it!
Your ideas for different colours in your palette are correct. All my brights are in a set I reserve for ‘flower painting’. Thanks for the video. I am at present putting together a minimalist set for autumn. Jo in France 🇫🇷
Oh I love that you have a flower painting palette! That’s such a cute and great idea. I’ll have to make an autumn palette too now that the leaves are changing. Do you have any favorite colors you like for your autumn palette?
Haha, yes! I've seen others use peg boards, but I only had a cork board so I made do! I hope you do the same because it's so fun to see your paints all organized and pretty. lol.

I love your setup and your attention to detail! I also love your room and organization! You have a great style. I have just recently discovered stablo. It’s a setup for plein air painters. I love it because I can set my sketchbook with it and setup my paint palette and water with it. It has a place for a water cup and brushes. I ordered a small double water container that clips to my sketchbook. It’s awesome because it has lids to cover them that don’t leak. The top of it is magnetic and so my art toolkit and other palettes stick to it. It’s a bit pricey but I felt it was worth it for my specific needs. I’m excited to see more videos from you ~ especially watercolor. I don’t use gouache because it just doesn’t have the magic watercolor does. Thank you for sharing your setup! I use artist tape and it works great!
Ooohhhh I just looked up sablo and it's awesome! I'm so glad you have that! I love that it's magnetic so the art toolkit palette can stick to it. I love having a setup that can be held in one hand and not fly away. lol. Although, once I set it down next to me on a bench to grab something out of my bag, and a big gust of wind came and blew it off! 😝 So I've learned not to do that again! Thanks for the comment!

That was fun! :) Thanks, Jaclyn! I have a little Eagle Creek camera bag that converts from a shoulder bag into a bum bag that I use for outdoor painting. I love it!
Excellent set up, I like using those type of bags too. It's a way of not taking too much stuff and it's comfortable to wear around the waist or even sling over the shoulder when cycling somewhere. I usually take a small homemade pallete that has 3 primaries, a convenience earth colour, white gouache or opaque white watercolour (for highlights) and a grey or neutral tint. I only take a small A6 sketchbook, one with 100% cotton paper, and a couple of bulldog clips or just elastic bands, with washi tape for borders. I don't take a board though, because it doesn't fit in the small bag. Mind you, I'm not painting in the desert! I usually paint while in a cafetería or outside on the terrace in the street or in parks. (I live in Madrid, Spain).
Yes, I used to overdo it and take too much when I'd go out in the field to paint. Now I just bring the essentials! Love that you sling it over the shoulder while you cycle! I love using white gouache and my grey/neutral tint too. That's a great minimal color palette! Sometimes I'll do a warm and cool tone of the primaries along with the same three you said too. I haven't found a sketchbook I like to bring with me, so I use pieces of 100% cotton paper and clip them down to my board. What sketchbook do you like to use? That's so cool to paint in a cafeteria/outdoors in Madrid! How wonderful! I haven't been to Spain before, but I've been to a handful of countries around you :)
@@jaclynbaerart I've used a few different sketchbooks, or small "ring bound" pads, but I recently bought a 4.7"x6.2", 140lb, 100% cotton, hot-press Baohong bound sketchbook. I don't usually use HP paper, but my idea with one is to try and paint more loosely and combine some ink sketching with watercolour. I've started you it yet, but I will do soon.
@@markdonovan1540 That's awesome! I also prefer ring bound sketchbooks since they lay flat and I can fold it over to lay flat too. And I like hot press paper too! I've started using coldpress for watercolors outdoors and am really enjoying it. :)
Nice video. Thanks. As your water cup is tapered, perhaps you could cut a hole in the plastic board and slip the cup into it. It would then catch the cup where it gets wider. Not sure I'm explaining this well but you're basically creating a cup holder. You could also keep the piece you cut out and tape it back in place with 3M blue painters tape which is less tacky than regular tape. Just a thought.
Yes! That makes sense! A few others have suggested this too and I love this idea! Plus it's free because it's only just cutting the board to fit the water cup! Thank you!
those metal dual oil/turp containers that clip onto wooden palettes might work for your setup for your water needs - and then you have one side for clean water and one for dirty
Lovely video! 😊 Here’s an idea for the water cup….You could cut a hole in your art board - just big enough so the cup fits in it….Or attach magnets so you could move it around if need be….OR cut a smaller piece of the plastic with a hole in it and you could clip that to your board….
😝 it’s a great idea and I’m definitely going to give this a go and film it so others will see too!! Thank you so much for the suggestion! I love hearing people’s ideas 🙌🏼
10:56 if that's a disktrasa (like a very thin sponge), it should be washable (by hand or washing machine at 60°C) - watercolor and gouache buildup should wash out just fine, other than the staining from the more stubborn pigments. I'm definitely team magnet - tiny neodymium magnets are crazy strong and weigh basically nothing, and they're quite inexpensive these days too! I'm not sure what type of glue would work best on silicone though... you could just place a loose magnet inside the cup every time you take it out to use it, but personally I would 1000% lose that magnet within, like, 12-24 hours of first use.
Yeah, just a swedish towel that I cut in half. I'd put it in the wash but I used acrylic gouache on it and afraid of that getting stuck in the pipes. But a towel with just watercolor bits on it would definitely be fine in the wash! So I'm thinking I'll use the other half and wash it when it gets too dirty. Or another person commented to use an athletic wrist band so it would save space on my art board and I can put it in the wash too! Great ideas!! And yes, I could see myself losing the magnet if I kept it loose too! 😝 So I'd probably need to adhere it somehow and test that out!
@@LaLa_ArtGal When I first started with my acrylic gouache paintings I put it all down the kitchen drain (ahh!) and it clogged it up. So I try to be very careful in cleaning my palettes. Can't wait to have a studio sink with all the right filteration. :)

Ahhh! Thank you so much!! I love your products a lot and hoping to stop by the shop next week when I'm in the area! ❤️
@@jaclynbaerart You're going to be HERE?? Where will you be painting? Would you like company??
@@LaLa_ArtGal I will! I'm planning to be in Port Townsend on Friday - still figuring out the details!
@@jaclynbaerart I just rinse mine in the sink. I don't know that mine is gunky enough that I've ever considered the pipes.
@@LaLa_ArtGal When I first started with my acrylic gouache paintings I put it all down the kitchen drain (ahh!) and it clogged it up. So I try to be very careful in cleaning my palettes. Can't wait to have a studio sink with all the right filteration. :)
Always like seeing how others do things! After a lot of looking, I made an art kit in Adidas Alliance 2 nylon backpack. It's super light weight, and has an outside pockets for a water bottle/id/whatever. Inside fits everything i could need. Looking forward to your content!
Ahh! Yes! I totally agree! I love seeing how other artist's put together their kits. I'm so glad you liked mine! I have a backpack too when I go out around my house, that way I can hold water and a bigger board + papers! Thanks for the comment!! Happy painting!
Hi! I really liked this video. I'm sure you already follow this but just wanted to mention that it's good to also avoid disposing the paint water in nature.
I’m so glad you liked it! Thank you 😊 And yes, I follow LNT and don’t dispose of paint water - Thanks for sharing!! Do you do any other things to help nature?
@jaclynbaerart Thank you so much for replying! I usually carry a mini jar that's used for baby food and take the paint water with me. The water brushes are handy too! I also take a small microfiber cloth for wiping off my brushes.
yes! I jar with a lid is perfect for taking the water with you. I also use a water brush mostly when I'm painting outdoors. It helps so much!@@cathyj1n
Great setup! 🙂
Aw, thank you so much!
Wow! I love when UA-cam connects you to new people 😊
I love your set up! I’m a big fan of art toolkit products too but have been looking for a lightweight bag for hiking and yours looks perfect!
Is your desk lamp/phone holder from Canvas?
Really looking forward to seeing more on your channel 😊
Me too! I'm so glad you liked my video. Isn't Art Toolkit products amazing?! I want all of their things. lol. Fanny packs are great to make into a small art kit on the go and securing it to your waist helps a ton out in the field. :)
Yes it is the Canvas Lamp! I got it 2+ years ago and loooove it!
Love the new channel, Jaclyn! You're awesome!
Ahh! Thank you Christina! This means so much. :)
Those clip on water cups are called dappens. They could definitely work. I like your idea of chloroplast. I could definately use that.
Good to know they are called dappens- better than what I was googling 😝 thank you!
And i hope the plastic board works for ya! I got mine in a big poster size sheet for $5 at Michaels Crafts Store and then cut it to the sizes I needed!
Hello Jaclyn, thank you for this video. Can I ask you waht kind of Lamp you use for your overhead shots? I tried to find it somewhere but didn´t succeed. Thank you very much, Katharina ❤
I'm glad you liked this video!! Of course - the lamp/phone stand I use is by a company called Shop Canvas. I've had mine for 2 almost 3 years and love it!
Thank you very much, Jaclyn!@@jaclynbaerart
May I please ask the name (brand) of the white gel pen you shared? I’m still trying to find the “right” one for myself. Thanks!
Hey! I’m on the road right now so I’ll check soon for ya!
Back home and it’s the Gelly Roll brand! I’ve also seen artists use those Posca white pens too. I haven’t used it but want to give it a go for my larger paintings!
There is a metal 2 cup water container with a clip that works well
oohh, I'lll have to look into that! Thank you! I have a metal clip so I was also thinking of attaching a small cup to it. For now, I cut a hole in the board to sit my current cup in it. 😆
@@jaclynbaerart I’ve also got some magnets that come in handy to attach the metal cup if I’m not using the clip. Thanks so much for your video. I love your style.
@@amandabartlett309 yes! I need to get some magnets to help attach things too - do you have a particular brand/type you like?
@@jaclynbaerart I know you can get some really strong magnets, but I just picked up some cheap ones from the dollar store. They seem to work OK I got some plain, round ones small, and some interesting magnets attached to clips. They are a bit larger, but they work well, I attach my metal art tool kit to them.
@@amandabartlett309 oh that's perfect! I think i've seen some clips with magnets on it before - that's a great idea!
What plein air chair are you using, there was a peek of it in the vid
Hey Maggie! It’s a Helinox Chair Zero. I just recorded a video of my art bag I bring with the extra things that I’ll edit this upcoming week!
In French it's "arsh" but everybody calls it "arches" in English. Nice video, thanks!
Thank you for letting me know!! 🫶🏼
How about making a hole in the corner to drop the cup into?
Yes! Another person suggested this and I love this idea! Others have also said maybe magnets too. I'm gonna try both 🙌🏼 But cutting a hole is cheapest. lol
@@jaclynbaerart Test cup with water weight on scrap piece first to be sure it doesn't bend and tear and spill
@@lindakopec7036 Brilliant! Thank you! 🙏
If you really wanna go simple just use one pencil and some paper
Very true!!
Thanks for our video, I also have a small kit for traveling.. I did notice that all of the things in your kits you called “ guys”?????? You are female, maybe they are also female.. it would be so great to call them gals! Thanks so much..
yes Coroplast is the best for sketch boards..
haha! I do say little guys and guys a lot. It's just something I've done my whole life. I see objects at little guys more than gals, but I should try it out! :)
