'The Wanderers' is a 1979 coming-of-age drama film directed by Philip Kaufman. Set in the Bronx, New York City, during the early 1960s, the film follows the lives of a group of teenage friends known as "The Wanderers" as they navigate the challenges of adolescence, love, and identity.
The film explores the trials and tribulations of these young men as they confront rival gangs, face family issues, and deal with the complexities of young love. It also delves into the evolving social and cultural landscape of the era, including the impact of rock 'n' roll music and the changing dynamics of their neighborhood.

I still have The Wanderers & Warriors on VHS and still own a Sanyo VCR in excellent working order. I’m 74 still living in the 70’s 💁♀️
That's awesome 👏
@@elliotgregory3356 💁♀️
@@Lgtg1947 I wish it was the 70's! Although I was only born in the 70's I remember videos like yesterday.
@@elliotgregory3356 I was born in ‘47,,,the swinging 60’s were great but the 70’s & glam rock were fabulous!!! 🥰💃🏻🥰 I play early 70’s music on my Amazon Alexa almost every day 💁♀️
@@Lgtg1947 I think you had the best years by far. My generation kinda had the end of it I feel. Well compared to today!
My all time underrated film. Love the sound track, the characters, the message......
loved the 1970's gang flicks. Thanks for bringing this one back.
Dearly love the Wanderer's !!! Reminds me of younger days and times !!!!! Fun !!
The character Emilio was one hell of a fighter in this film. He took out several Ducky Boys in the brawl at the end even though he was 20-30 years older than they were. Unforgettable scene where he breaks off the wooden bench before the brawl so he can use it as a club.
Who are these guys friends of yours?
@@waynezahra9213 Yes. Every character in this film is a personal friend of mine.
Its a Movie
William Andrews. He was also the detective in Saturday Night Fever. Hasn't done anything else.
@@waynezahra9213 My apologies! You were just quoting what Emilio said when the Ducky Boys arrived for the brawl at the end. It didn't register with me at first. Nice line.
Earland Van Lidth De Jeude (aka Terror) was not only an actor, he was an opera singer, a NCAA wrestler and a computer scientist who received his computer science and engineering degree from MIT. Despite his imposing stature, he was the nicest and kindest guy. Definitely too soon taken.
Strange, isn't that the actors typecast as Dumb Tough Guys always turn out to be the nicest and smartest people in real life? Watching the movie recently again, I think Van Lidth could have had a great career as a voiceover artist; he had a voice made for The Simpsons!
@@KRhetor As an example, Ivan Rheon. Played Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones, even his glance was horrifying. And he is one of the kindest actors from GoT cast :)
Van Lidth De Jeude died of heart failure on September 23, 1987 at age 34, a few months after finishing work on The Running Man and one day after his first wedding anniversary.
One of my favourite films, fantastic soundtrack.
Great music !!! Loved it. !!!
Wife and I just watched this the other night on dvd. Excellent film. Never would be made today.
@@WELCOME-ThenandNow Exactly
The Wanderers is a run away winner in my book.
Love The Wanderers the best. Have it on DVD 📀! Saw this movie the first time on cable TV back in 1980.
Great film. Unfairly forgotten.
Ken Wahl was fantastic in "Wiseguy." I watch the repeats every chance I get. His career was cut short due to an accident. Sucks there are only four seasons of Wiseguy.
Oh yeah. Vinnie Terranova was amazing.
Good show indeed.
I’m glad to see so many of the actors are still with us- why no convention or comic cons - I loved this film
Of the three 1979 "gang" movies, my favorite has always been Walter Hill's "The Warriors," with "The Wanderers" running a close second.
I've always been a big fan of director Walter Hill - The Warriors, Streets of Fire, 48 Hours, Another 48 Hours, Crossroads, Red Heat, Southern Comfort, Last Man Standing, Hard Times, The Getaway (remake), etc.
Agree with you!
The funny thing about the most remembered line in the Warriors, spoken by actor David Patrick Kelly as he clanged beer bottles together was not in the script,he totally made it up and they kept it in the movie.
Who could ever forget..Warriors come out to play ya😃
What was the third one?
At joann p..i didnt know that..
Actually, there were 4 gang movies of 1979...Wanderers, Warriors, Boulevard Nights and a really good one called 'Walk Proud', with Robby Benson
The Wanderers is a more fun movie to watch than the warriors
Every time this movie played i recorded and watched it nearly every day! Loved that movie! Give me a time when we recorded movies from tv and rented movies any day of the week!
'The Wanders' is an underrated film. The first time I saw this film (I do believe) it was on the Arts and Entertainment Channel when it was a good channel. Sometime afterwards I rented the video (VHS) at a rental video store. I always thought it was the New York version of 'American Graffiti', but with a more serious storyline, and going towards the end of the film it almost brought me to tears because of the change that was just starting out on the music scene. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just the memories of that time period that I remember when I was a kid growing up in the 60's. Definitely one of my favorite films.
I STILL OWE THIS FILM,I WOULD NOT GET RID OF IT FOR ANYTHING IN THE WORLD,I LOVE THE FILM,SONGS,FIGHTS!YEA HELL! AND PLENTY OF HOT MOMENTS!SUPER COOL FILM!🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Wanderers was on every Saturday night for what seemed like years, back from the pub , fry up and The Wanderers, Christ I miss those days!
Loved how you not only showed us al the main characters in this movie, but also included a lot about their pasts and ages.
Always love this movie! So sad to learn how many have passed away.
You now have me as a new subscribor🌹
Absoluter Kultfilm in der Clique gewesen. War meine erste Original VHS Video Cassette. Hoch und Runter abgespielt. ♥️
I met both Cast Members of The Warriors and The Wanderers. Every one of them were nice...kind...cool and pleasant to talk to. Tony G told me some of the fight scene at the football brawl was real. Some actors took cheap shots at Tong G. and he said Lets do it for real on the next take so they fought for reals.
I remember speaking with Michael Beck about the fight scenes with the baseball bats and some people got really hurt.
Between both movies I enjoyed The Wanderers the most! Im just sad a lot of actors have passed away now.
You ruined it by saying " reals" uhgg
This is one of my fondest memories as A kid I watched this movie with my mom dad and brother and to this day it's one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely one of the greatest most underrated films of all time
The wanderers for me , more humour and great music. Loved the warriers too though. Warriers plot was a bit weak , probably better fight scenes, but the wanderers developed the characters more and created something very special. Loved it .
The Wanderes was a far better film on every level. It has so many layers and the acting is excellent.
@@flexiblestrategist9922 , agreed, so many great scenes, and the immortal line....leave the kid alone !!!
I loved the guy that said Warriors come out and play over and over. lol
I have to disagree about the Warrior's having better fight scenes! Hands down when they met up with the ducky boys!
@@LisaCSCO the warriors had more , like the toilet fight, central park and the lesbians. The fight scenes were more edgy . But the wanderers was a all round better film , helped by the great music score too.
Er ist und bleibt mein absoluter Lieblings Film !
Die legendäre Schlägerei mit den Ducky Boys auf den Football Feld werde ich nie vergessen ! 👌👌👌👌 Best Movie ever...
I watch this film once a month and have done since it came out.... Great movie and sound track. Little known fact Dion who Sang the song "the wanderer" was a member of the Fordham Baldies.
Really? I didn't know that, will have to look for him if I get a chance to watch it again.
@@joannp5806 sorry he wasn't in the movie..... He was an actual Baldie in real life
_The Wanderers_ will always be my favorite. Seen it for the first time in 1983 when my parents bought a video recorder. I remember seeing the trailer of _The Warriors_ at our Drive-in once when I was about 11 and it scared me. Tried to watch it a couple of times on video later on but couldn't get into it...
One of my all time favourites, this film was just brilliant.🇬🇧👍😄
Karen Allen , what a beauty
Great movie💞
Great film got the uncut dvd of the Wanderers where Turkey dies in ducky boys territory, great soundtrack too👌👍
The Warriors was my favorite, I only seen the Wanderers once, but the Warriors many times, as for the other gang movie, I never even heard of it.
One of my all time favorite movies.
I was 16 when this came out.
I'm A Brit and was training in worlds gym Venice Cal in 1995 i was a big fan of the film it was a cult classic in the Uk in the early 80s, i saw this big guy come in and thought i recognise him, any way it was Tony ganios. i said are u the guy in the Wanderers, he said yes we chatted for ages he was surprised it was such a hit in the UK , i said loads of kids were walking around saying Leave the kid alone! hes a big mopar fan. im 6 .2 he must be 6.4 big guy
@Lonesomedrifter54 sadly my brother told me only 60s some back problems then had a heart attack bizarre 😕
I haven't seen The Wanderers in ages. You should do The Lords of Flatbush.
Lords of the Flatbush: Sly Stallone and The Fonz!
Henry Winkler turn down the role on Grease for the Lords of Flatbush I bet he regrets that till this day
The Wanderers was a Fun watch, the Warriors a thrilling journey, Boulevard Nights i must watch again, I saw the Wanderers at the Odeon theatre in Ipswich Suffolk UK, I tried to see it everyday, I could identify with the youths. Saw the warriors at the base theatre on the Crooked Creek. Great movies with low production cost that will never be forgotten.
I love the music in both The Wonderers and The Warriors 😎👍🇳🇿
I saw this at the dive- in, when I was a kid. I loved it. I wanted to be in a gang so much, because of this, and The Warriors.
when we was young...warriors..come and play...and the wanderes...and saturday night fever.we had a great time💪forgot rocky.the 70s was great for us.
I had such a crush on Ken Wahl on Wise Guy ❤️
And I HAD a Crush on KAREN ALLEN,(STILL DO,OH MY GOD SHE WAS SEXY AND HOT!,DAMN SON!😂😂😂😂😂
Didn't everyone ??!! He was so good looking !!!!!
GREAT JOB!!! Thanks for sharing
I was 10 when this classic coming of age film was made. I've seen The Wanderers probably a hundred times since 1980 when it came out on "the movie channel". I know nearly every line. When compared to the Warriors which I also love and have seen as many times from the age of 11, till now, I'll say that both films are brilliant. The Wanderers set in a different era is more believable and meaningful to me. What incredible acting, cinematography, and soundtrack! You really feel like you're a witness to early 60s life in the Bronx with The Wanderers; to know the characters personally, to grow up in a street gang, as the times change along with the main characters. This movie is and should be regarded as an American classic! "Wanderers forever".
Great movie,love it
Never gets old 😆
You can add Danny Aiello (3rd) to the departed count. Son of Danny Aiello, he played the Fordham Baldy who yells (if I recall)- Hey; I'm Talking To You, at Perry, pre the Leave the Kid Alone scene. Dolph Sweet played an earlier incarnation of the Chubby Gallasso character in the 1974 movie Lords of Flatbush, - another great movie that is still a favourite. Chubby's line in the Wanderers : I Did it (sex) but not with someone's daughter ... Is hilarious, as he's twisting Richie's balls for getting Despi pregnant!
I stay in Scotland, UK. This film came out in 1979, but on a very limited release. Art house theatres were the place to view it. I recall too, an alt death scene for Turkey. Perhaps the lamp post scene was cut- it's too many years in the past, but still a top movie. Agree re the comment on book to movie, however given Mr Richard Price helped shape the screenplay, he still contributed to an amazing movie....
WANDERERS FOREVER...!
El
_I never did it with anybody's daughter!_ I love that line...
No way! Didnt know that
-Fav out of the 3 is the Wanderers. It was entertaining, had comedy, drama, & was pretty much true. NYC roughly back from 190yrs ago, through the 1840s, thru the 1950s to early 60s was streetgang capital of America, some other cities had some also. And, the Fordham Baldies weren't all bald, their big leather jackets had an American bald eagle on the back & the name. 1 was Dion Dimucci & the Belmonts. The Belmonts were actually members of another Bronx NY. gang named the Imperial Hoods who were from a section of the Bronx that Belmont Ave. ran through. Dion & them met & since there may not have been a beef between them they formed the group.
I remember first watching this around my friends about 91/92. AWESOME film. The Duckie Boys were fucking Terrifying as a kid.
How much does Ken Wahl look like an Italian Christopher Reeve with a unibrow?
No up to date photo of him now, I notice, unlike the others.
Outstanding video. Just the type of info I'd want. I loved the Warriors and the Wanderers, two huge cult classics. Thanks.
This and the Warriors are two of my all time favourite movies.
Classic film and top soundtrack
We all remember the string tied around there member's to join the boldies great movie great memories 👌
Us straight guys dont remember that scene
I liked all 3 you mentioned. Wanderers, Warriors and Blvd Nights. I'd have to say me and my friends liked The Wanderers the best
Another gang film from the very same year was called 'Walk Proud', with Robby Benson Also quite good
This movie is better then The Warriors (1979)
Couldn't disagree more. The Warriors was 1000 times more authentic
@@Yette Disagree, Warriors was an action movie with no character development, while Wanderers had the developed and connectivity with the audience and some cool action scenes with the fight!
Thumbs up 👍
My BFF and myself found this movie on HBO, back when it only broadcasted 6-7 hours every evening. And movies would show almost daily for a whole month. We watched it over and over and I've not seen it since then (40+yrs) but still remember it like it was still 79. I look a couple times a year on all the streaming channels. Great movie! Ducky Boys scared the hell out of us lol
The Wanderers just edges out the Warriors. I was in my mid teens when they came out and I love them both. Blvd. Nights just isn't in the same league.
I still have this on DVD and I watch it often. I watched it with my dad for the first time. And my son watched it with me for the first time.
In 1979, three gang-themed movies hit the cinemas!
Which was your favorite???
The Wanderers
The Warriors
Boulevard Nights
The Warriors by far the best !!
Different time periods and cultures brother. I'm hard pressed for an answer
three best films of 79 are the Warriors , the Wanderers and Quadrophenia
The Warriors hands down!
The Wanderers for me
Never seen or even heard of this film. Thx for bringing it to my attention
Love the final scenes at the footy game, when the gangs unite to fight the Ducky boys.
Prefer this over the Warriors.
👍🇦🇺
The warriors & the wanderers
I always wondered what happened to this cast ... 👍
Joey was our favorite !!!! Little pain in the butt !!!!
@@claudettenarcomey6317 Joey was a character 😁 Where can I buy this movie on Blu-Ray ?.
I went to school with John Freidricks at Sun Valley Jr. high in 1970- 71 we were in the same small group of friends, a real nice guy and friend.
Dion Albanese (Teddy Wong) is still alive and has a facebook page.
Wow. Wanderers and warriors have to give that one a tie. Two great movies!
Tnx for mixing it up.:)
RIP Tony Ganios who played "Perry" in this classic movie !! 64 years young 😔🙏 1959 - 2/18/2024
I went to High School with Dion Albanese. He is roughly 63 years of age.
My neighbor Vinny De Carlo played Albert Galasso.
This movie . One of the all time greats
The Warriors, one of my top 5 movies of all time!
Wanderers Warriors Boulevard Nights in that order. Love all of them.
Very cool.
What a brilliant bit of nostalgia.
EMILIO (joey's dad) reminds me a lot of
"LALO SALAMANCA"
From BETTER CALL SAUL !
Love this movie from the first time I saw it upon its release until this day.
RIP and thank you to the actors who contributed to making this movie what it is to so many
Karen Allen is a super favorite from films of this era for me. She seemed to be a strong sensible woman without the feminist histrionics. She also had a girl next door beauty which is a well known man killer. God bless you Karen wish there were more like you.
Brilliant film love it
According to Ace Frehley of Kiss, the Duckie Boys were a real gang in the Bronx that were as menacing as they were portrayed in this film
I never really understood where they were from.
@@kroanosm617
Yes in Ace’s book, he spoke alot of his membership in that group and his teen years in the Bronx
They got their name from the duck pond near the botanical gardens in the Bronx
@@thomasgallagher7092 i read they were an Irish gang
The Wanderers is my favorite with the Warriors coming in a close second but i absolutely love them both, i could never get tired of watching either one. Watta great year 1979 was 👍
Nice trip down memory lane. Man but I miss being 19 when this terrific movie came out.
✌🏼🏴🇬🇧
Hm...never even *heard* of this film until running across this video on the YT main page. Funny how it came out the same year as "The Warriors", it definitely appears to be the same theme/subject. How have I been so familiar with "The Warriors" since its very release, but not at all with this one, I wonder? "Warriors" must have had better marketing and certainly had to have garnered more notoriety and publicity.
Wow that was great , finally someone did a where are they now on my favaroite movie,
What a great cast and movie.
Watched this movie at least 20 times ❤️😄
Love this film bought the jacket and sound track.
The Wanderers!
I travel back in time when i remember the wanderers.i have copies of it and the warriors .warch them when i feel nostalic.they are still great movies to watch.
Michael Wright is right on 👌
Very cool film, enjoyed watching this movie when I was a kid, the music , the cars, the gangs, and the whole bronx era absolutely classic, will keep watching this film to the end of my days…
The Warriors ,The Wanderers , 2 great classic movies
This was one of the first films I worked on as a PA. Very well done film. The picture of Richard Price From the Movie is wrong. It was the other guy who you only got a glimpse of for a second.
