    Tire height is always so overlooked! Cheap gearing!

      Yep! I always pick gear and tire size based on what the car is going to run and rather it's 1/8, 1/4, or a roll car.

      3.42 with a 28 is slower. I've done it on a few cars. You're adding a shift to the short track and you still get that big 3-4 shift drop. 3.42 on a 28 at 6800 is 142mph in 4th (no converter slip) 2.56 on a 26 at 7200 in 3rd (no converter slip) is 142mph. I have done 2.56, 2.73, 3.42, on 26s and 28s on more than one car.

    I think one of the variables you have here in addition to tire diameter is weight. Have you weighed the two rear sets? Hoosier DR2 17's are one of the lightest at only 21lbs. And at one time I had a set of taller 17 M+H's......GREAT street tire, very stable, but heavier than a truck tire! I think mine were like 28 lbs!!! I'm not familiar with what wheels you ran, but rotating mass is a big deal with regard to drag racing. Sounds like you are locking converter top of 2nd? Have you tried without locking?

    • @andrewd843
      @andrewd843  Рік тому +1

      Weight is big! But racestars are heavy too. But I agree. And yes I've had 5 or 6 converters in this car over the years. Ran them unlocked locked, locked all sorts of gears all sorts of different lock points.
      Spent a whole rental once only changing lock points nothing else to see what worked and what didn't.

    What rear wheels do you have? I went with 17x12 repros, but they poke a bit. I want a fitment closer to yours. I have to run the 335/35R17 hoosier DR2s.

      I have a spare 3.42 and other tires too. On another one with a similar combo we dropped 0.1 going to a 3.42 but this car also didn't have great low end grunt either. But other cars I've seen were hit or miss since a 3.42 in 4th is pretty similar to a 2.56 in 3rd.

    I went from a 245/65R17 to a 245/50R17 on my stock TrailBlazer and lost 1 mph while running the same ET. I blame the converter. On my Camaro I dropped 2" of tire size and was .4 faster ET with .1 quicker 60ft. Mph was up 2 as well I believe.

      They do fairly well on stock suspension. What suspension issues am I having? Tires help because of gearing, not suspension. The car has done low 1.3 60s on stock suspension.
      The car isn't bouncing. It isn't rebounding too fast or too slow. It isn't doing wheelies. So what issue do I have?

    Those cars need gear.

    • @andrewd843
      @andrewd843  Рік тому

      It definitely helps on some, and hurts on others, the 3.42 rear in 4th is effectively the same gear ratio as the 2.56 in 3rd. So it might help the car get off the line better but it's adding an additional shift which can hurt performance. I know some people have done back to back testing and either had no gains or lost time. Then on another car I did we went to a 3.42 and dropped .1 on his combo. I have a different gear set for mine to try to see if it helps now but I also changed everything on the car so we'll see how it does.

    • @HioSSilver1999
      @HioSSilver1999 Рік тому

      @@andrewd843 it has to be in gear long enough to recover from the shift if the gear change requires a extra shift. Other than that gear always works if its the right gear.......especially on vettes because they are way under geared.
      I mean you changing tire size here was effectively changing gear. Of course some weight loss came with that so that's always nice.
      Probably the biggest deal with improvements on gm stuff is getting rid of all the tm. You won't notice much change sometimes because the pcm is tq based.
      We went 10.5@132 with a bolt on ls3 m6 vette. We had put 4.10s in it...but in reality it had to much gear on a 26" tire that is. It woulda went atleast the same et(probably lower) and probably 2 or 3 mph faster with 3.90s.
      That car was traction limited anyway so it couldn't really use the gear. We ran those times on a 26x9.5 16 qtp. A bolt on ls3 could easily run botton 10s with some track adjustments and weight reduction. Probably high 9s if one really wanted to get serious.

      @@HioSSilver1999 I wouldn't call a 26.0" to a 25.6" a huge "gear change"
      What were your bolt ons that trapped 132?

    • @andrewd843
      @andrewd843  Рік тому

      But I don't disagree I have 3.45 gears on my ss and that car feels way better even when it was a header only car.
      But plenty have swapped the c6 from a 2.56 to 3.42 with either no or minimal gains. To this day no cammed ls3 c6 has gone faster or quicker than I did full weight with a 2.56 gear. There's a 4 spd ls2 that went a little quicker, and the 6l80 cars all that went faster were 400+ ci.
      Comparing a tr6060 car to a 6l80 is a bit pointless when talking about gears. I can change a converter with no gear changes and make it act different which I have. I think I've had 6 converters in this car now.

    • @HioSSilver1999

      @@andrewd843 the bolt on when we ran 132 was a ported rod modded ls3 intake done by me, black magic stepped headers with x pipe through the stock npp, 1.8 roller rockers which was a very minimal difference, 4.10s, ram air cai we built, ewp with some different belt routing, tuning but hadn't been on a dyno yet, 5.5" tilton clutch. We may have put a crank scraper on it...i forget on that one. We ran it in a few different configurations.
      Poverty drag pak, light battery but those were the only real intended weight reduction. It did lose some weight through the other mods which is typical.
      Pretty simple set up that could easily be built upon. A 27" tire or 3.90s would have picked it up, some drag brakes and really paying attention to weight always helps.
