    I’d know by the chat of you you’ve got the experience,the comment about the cold air killing the gloss gave it away.
    Keep up the good work craftsman✨

    Certainly been a challenging summer for me outside with the weather, even with dry days noticing in the morning due on woodwork outside so not great for gloss work. Time to start thinking about wrapping things up for the season outside? Informative video, with all these problems are am keen to find alternative quicker drying products which give the same level of protection but as importantly has the same finish. They are out there finish wise just need to see how well they last as I'm sure you know they degrade differently to traditional finishes

      Yes, definitely I've had to leave one outside now till next year. The is some good water-based exterior undercoats. Exterior oil gloss is very hard wearing.

      My go to gloss is Sikkens XD, very durable and great finish but it's quite a fussy system and it needs bossing about. I have been trialling A paint from Finland called Teknos so as you can imagine has been developed to withstand quite harsh environments, goes on nicely and the gloss level is pretty pleasing but could be an alternative? Getting too cold for being outside and I hate my outside dust sheets getting wet as I hate the smell they then get

      Yes it's getting to the point it's only worth doing two may be three outsides a year. Sandtex gloss and Dulux weather shield are some we use.

      I used to love weather shield but I must confess have gone off a bit, don't find the undercoat as good as before. I have also spoken with their technical team and whereas it was always two undercoat, one gloss, they now seem to recommend one undercoat, two gloss. I have found that way lasts longer but just have to be careful of bouncing the gloss

      It does seem to change at times sometimes that could be a manufacturing fault. Once I had some varnish new tin and did some doors. Next day it was like someone had put sand in the paint, the doors were like sandpaper. It turned out it was a fault with the manufacturing process. And on outsides, the glosses are only as good as the surface it's on. Especially on facias the top edge near the tile if any water is getting in that can blow the paint off. Keeping water from soaking into the woodwork around windows and door edges near brickwork. The exterior oil paints do the job perfectly it's all down to the moisture content of the wood.

    That finish looked amazing. Please could I ask, was that oil based paint and is it better / more durable than waster based paints for exteriors?

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  3 роки тому +2

      It was oil.. and oil has a better finish although durability is about the same..

    Another good video mate. Sandtex gloss ? I never use anything other than Sandtex flexi gloss or flexi eggshell on my exteriors.
    Putting a wee drop of terebine in all my paints now. One more exterior to do and that's it. Been a shit summer in Scotland. More shit than usual lol. Strange how some Decorators don't consider the temperature drop as we head into colder weather. Cheers

    Hi Pn'D ......if you don't mind can you answer this question???
    How often and under what circumstances do you use silicon carbide paper?
    I know it leaves a lovely finish but I'm not sure whether I should just use it in 'posh' houses?
    Cheers,
    Jamie.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  6 років тому

      Silicon Carbide: Sandpaper with a silicone carbide abrasive is very hard, harder than either aluminum oxide or garnet. This hardness makes it a great choice for sanding metal, for paint removal, and for use on plastic and fiberglass. Usually not the best choice for wood.

      Painting and Decorating ok, what I've been taught so far is ali oxide stuff for sorta main duties....but wet n dry going through the grades then thoroughly sponging off and application for a really nice finish, as I say mate I'm learning!! I'm what you call a 'mature' student so I'm on catch up and trying to soak everything in. I apologise for taking up too much of your time, thanks either way.👍

      @@jamiecunningham1565 No worries glad to help,, thing is when your in someones home and they are paying you a certain price. All they want is a nice job, so to mess about with a bucket of water wet sanding doing something that can be achieved with fine sandpaper dry, and for half the price as wet sanding. A lot more mess when you wet sand. So I've never wet sanded since college my dad never companies I worked for never wet sanded.

    Another good tip when it's cold is to heat up your paint and keep it in a bucket of hot water

    What brushes do you use for oil based paint and how do you store and clean them also how to get a glass finish

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  7 років тому +1

      Hamilton Prestige Pure Bristle. For a glass finish, it's all down to how smooth the surface before the first undercoat so good preparation. Then it's the right viscosity of the paint. And finally, the laying off technique and that is with the undercoat as well as the gloss. Will do a video on this. How to store follow this --ua-cam.com/video/HmtxHQEVDo8/v-deo.html.

      Painting and Decorating thank you top work oh last question do you shape your oil brushes or just let them wear in

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  7 років тому

      Thanks. A lot of the time they have been worn in by using them in emulsion paints for a few weeks.
