I came here to find out how to paint my front door. It looks lovely. Great job. Thank god my door isn't as big as yours.
craggybag, Hahaha - Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so happy you found me. I do have quite a giant front door but even though I had a lot of space to cover, it still turned out smooth and brush-less. Yours will too!! All the best to you and your painting project. Your Fall decor is going to look beautiful against a freshly painted entrance door. Feel free to check out my other DIY videos (I have 150+) on my website: www.reneeromeo.com Have a great day, Renee
I found you today, learn how to paint front door, thank you. Will let you known how it turn out . I had a boy Cat name Romeo ,like your last name .😁
I've watched so many 'how to paint a door' videos and so far no one has impressed me with technique and results like you have. I'm a newbie at using semi-gloss and doing exterior so I know my job won't be as perfect as yours *BUT* I think I'm going to do a decent enough job as long as I am patient, use my eye and follow your guidance. Thank you so much. HERE GOES!
Meretciel, Thank you for the very kind words! You'll do a great job - just like me. Best wishes, Renee

@10:00 O..M…G. I never thought about just blocking the whole thing with paper. Game changer! Thanks girl!❤
Oh, you're welcome! I used to use a fan as a bug inhibitor but that wasn't fool-proof. This works great! 💪 Thank YOU! Renee

Thank you for this. Getting prepped to paint my front door tomorrow and this video was invaluable.
I'm so happy to help! I'm sure it turned out perfectly. The sun load on mine makes me think I'll have to do it again next year. 🤔 NO worries! All the best, Renee

I feel like most people's front door doesn't look like the entrance to Buckingham palace 🤣
Hi Michael, LOL If I can get a smooth finish on such a large area, anyone can do this on regular height doors. too! This method is for big and small. All the best, Renee
Awesome job thank you for an excellent video
What a great video, I'm getting ready to paint my exterior door and was trying to find information. Surely I can paint my standard door if you can paint your beautiful, huge doors. Thank you so much
Janice, Exactly right! Your "open" time for the paint will be longer than mine (with a standard door) and therefore you can take your time getting things just right before the paint starts to dry. It's going to be flawless and gorgeous when you're done. Thanks for the kind words. Have fun with your painting project, Renee
Best video I have seen!! Thank you!
Thanks Kristie! You'll have perfect luck with yours too! Renee

Lorainne Dash, Thank you for the nice comments! The front door looks so much better now - it didn't look so nice before . Since I just moved in a year ago, I will be slowly rolling out tours of all the rooms in house. @@shemakeswavesbee8150 Super!! Thank you so much 👊
Wow!!
Tilly Willy, I know, it's huge but I still managed to get a flawless finish throughout. Thanks for the nice comment, Renee
I would take off the door & hardware, do the outside & edges with the doors laid flat. To eliminate brush mark, I would paint the door with a roller. 1 prime coat + 2 finishing coats ; it would take 8 hours with 1/2 hrs. for each coat + intermediate dry to touch time.
Roger King lp, Very good advice! My doors are heavy and 8 feet high so this method would be impossible for me to try alone but I've definitely done this with interior doors and they turn out looking equally great. Thanks for the input - it'll give others yet another approach to get the same results. Thanks so much, Renee
I will be attempting our front door this weekend
Hi Melissa, You're going to have a beautiful entryway after this weekend - just in time for Fall decorating! I can't wait to hear how it goes. All the best, Renee
Thanks for good advice

Maam! you took a very big and a tall door to repaint.... very well explained and nice job completed. May be you add some tips of using the ladder safely ..at some time when you were explaining the area/sections to paint..I was much worried about your balance on the ladder....and with such heigh ladder...I am happy to see you completing the job 😉..great video with all the risks that you took for your viewers..😃..Thank you.
Yes, I should have taken some time to explain that I was a gymnast too. My balance is unusually good. No worries! Best wishes with your project too ❤️ Renee
I have to do all of my exterior doors when the weather cools off. Great job!!
Hi Emily, You've had a busy summer too! I have one more exterior door to go and am also waiting for cool/cloudy weather. The pole barn door is metal and sees sun all day long. It's best to wait another few weeks than risk the door being too hot. I think it would bake the paint before it dries properly. Have fun! Renee
You are awesome
Jeanne, Thank you for the kind words! It's very nice. All the best with your project too, Renee
Wow what a huge & beautiful entrance!
Searching and came across you. I will be doing our front door. But I need to do a lot of repair from dry rot damage. You allude to a future video on repairing? Could someone please share the link, thanks
I'm getting ready to paint so this was a perfect video for me to watch. I am going to use butcher paper to keep critters away which was a concern for me. Also, I was concerned for your safety on the tall ladder, I hope someone was there to hold it for you. Thx!
Carrie, Oh thanks! I feel like I could have been a good tight rope walker so no worries with the ladder. Great idea with the butcher paper btw! Zero critters AND a perfect finish? Wonderful. Have fun and stay safe. All the best, Renee
Thank you very much. Great instruction!

This looks like a textured (grained)fiberglass insulated door. I agree with your recommendation of painting one rectangle at a time on the door and wiping paint off adjacent areas on a smooth steel door. However, since this door is textured (grained), it wouldn't show slight brush marks even if you didn't wipe it off.
Cpcsof1, You're correct in thinking that because with the woodgrain pattern it would hide most painting mistakes pretty easily. In my case, the door faces South and would show any paint overlap very easily due to sunshine glare. With this method (and taking a little extra time), only the graining shows through. It really looks as if it's been spray painted - super smooth and even, despite the graining. Thanks for the great feedback. All the best, Renee
What a beautiful entry! Are there any tips on painting a fiberglass door? It has hot SC sun beating down on it most of the day, so I love your craft paper idea.
Chez G, Hey - thanks! It looks so nice and clean now. Whether you have fiberglass, wood or metal, the process is exactly the same. As long as you get the surface smooth (by sanding slightly), you will have perfect results! All the best on your project! I always have a roll of craft paper standing by - you never know what you can use it for. Renee
Great work. Your door is amazing! I couldn’t find your supply list for this project on your website. I want to know what paint you used.
She mentioned it several times: Behr Marquee Semi Gloss.
good detailed video! when do you paint the side of the door? thank you
Hi ka wei, Thank you for the kind words! It's your choice to paint the sides before or after you paint the front of the door. Whatever works for you. All the best wirh your your painting project, Renee
You would 100% still see the brush marks. You need to back roll and do two coats to get a “flawless” finish
I would like to see you fix rot. I also have a door that has been broken into but it still works. I was thinking of filling it with wood filler. Then painting.
Hi Lisa, Thanks for the great suggestion! My friend has done this and I couldn't do it any better so here is his video for you to view:

Careful spraying water around the door. Many doors are not fully waterproof and you can get water behind the door.
NEVER stand on a ladder facing away the rungs. Catastrophe waiting to happen. Always face towards the rungs.
Hi Lenser, Two EXCELLENT points!! Thank you! I'll be more careful in the future. All the best, Renee
Might want to add some floetrol to the paint also. No taping?
Thank you for this video. Should the edge sides of the door be painted too? I have a new door that says it is primed. Should the inside of the door be painted with the same type of paint or with an interior paint?
Excellent question! It's OK to paint the interior of the door with exterior paint if you want that color to also be on the inside of the house (both edges too). If you want a different color on the inside, go with interior paint and paint the hinge side only with the interior paint. The edge that faces outside should be painted with the exterior paint color. It's going to look beautiful. All the best with your project, Renee
That's some door! Was that 80 grit, or 180 grit?
Looks beautiful! That is a HUGE front door! What about the weather stripping around the door? I'm assuming we have to remove all weather stripping first. When do we reinstall the weather stripping? We had a professional painter paint our front door last time and we left the weather stripping off for a couple days but the paint STILL stuck to the door frame and pulled the paint off even after drying all day (its dry and warm where we live). How to avoid this??
Cat Bee, Hey - thanks! It was quite the big job. However, I didn't remove the weatherstripping on my front door. It was in great shape and I would hate to ruin the factory install if it wasn't completely necessary. I would say that your problem came from paint and/or application problems. Applying too much paint to the surface at once will definitely cause drying problems - no matter what quality paint you're using, temperature or humidity conditions. You can see in the video that I'm applying only one thin coat. Because I'm using high quality paint, it covered in only one coat. So, whether your door requires one, two, or three coats (depending on what paint you're using), thin coats will always dry properly and not stick to the weatherstripping. I've been painting since I was 11 years old and sometimes learned the hard way too! Sorry, but your pro didn't do you any favors.... All the best with your DIY paint project, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo Thanks so much, Renee! I appreciate your advice and direction:) Ciao!

Semi glass paint is matt or shiny ?
@@AhmadAwan-rn9vv It's on the shiny side.
was that a ghost through the glass at :13 in?
Djustice, LOL!!!
Naive question: What kind of caulk, please? Thanks for the helpful video.
It's literally called 'printer's caulk'. Available at your local big box store. I purchase mine in white and then paint it. Anything you apply this to looks super professional.. it's my favorite thing! All the best, Renee
So sorry - my auto correct got this wrong. It's PAINTER'S caulk...
I really hate to be the only person with a negative remark but when you paint any door that has visible wood grain you will never see brush strokes also on an 80 degree day marquee will dry sufficiently to close the door in 1 hour I’ve been using it since it first came on the market in my business it out preforms Both of the other top brands, plus semi gloss paint does not lay down any more efficiently than any other finish but you do have good technique with the brush
Bill, Thank you for the feedback. Since I don't do this everyday, it seems prudent to follow the methods that have worked for me over the years. I certainly don't want people to do more than they have to but this was my first woodgrain door. I've only had smooth doors until now. I've also had a few doors stick to the paint early on - so I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'm not usually in a hurry to get these types of project done quickly anyway. I have amazing patience when it comes to DIY.. All the best, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo first let me say the door came out beautifully but as a pro painter (and I say that with all humility) anytime you have to paint a wood grain finished door you can brush out the inlays just as you did but you can roll all of the flay surfaces with a mini roller, the roller texture will never be seen because of the grain I hope that saves you some time on your next door.
@@billprezioso3677 It's very kind of you to share your expertise. I need to repaint the door this spring and I'll try rolling it. I know paint has come a long way too. Thank you so much, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo if you roll it use a velour mini roller they are at Sherwin Williams.
How does plugging up a hole with caulk instead of woodfiller influence the behaviour of a bee ?
Whats the name of the color of the paint, and where it is from..
LADY. S. The color is called Blackstone from Behr. Renee
What color is the paint?
Hi Mystarft, It's Sherwin Williams SW2735 Rockweed. Pretty - I love it! Thank you for asking, Renee
A tube of what now 👀
Hi Carla, Did I say caulk? Caulk and a caulk gun (found in your local paint department) will turn out to be your best friends in case you have exposed joints or cracks. It'll fill in gaps perfectly. Just make sure it's paint grade caulk or you won't be able to get the paint to adhere - no matter what you do. It'll be great looking! All the best, Renee
Easy spray it.
You could do that too but most people don't have a spray gun. This method really works! All the best, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo I'm sure it does, I was just being my typical smart a$$ self. Have a good one.

Unfortunately, I didn't get from the video how exactly you ended up with no brush marks. The video doesn't get into the details of technique used to avoid the brush marks.
Right around 4:30 she says semi-gloss paint is the key to a smooth finish with brushing. If using satin or flat paint, she said you need to roll.
Also she mentioned back brushing technique.
So brave, I’m afraid of heights
