No idea why I'm watching BMT videos a few months after graduating LOL but I just wanted to comment that everyone should take the advice in this vid!!!! I watched this before I left and It helped me so much (especially the underwear/bra quantities). You got me thru, girl!

If shaving cream isn’t allowed, use conditioner. It really helps and prevents razor burn.

I know I'm probably late, but I wanted to say thanks for the information I'm currently getting ready to go into the air force and I just wanted to say thank you for the information and all the advice that you have given me and everyone else.
Went through AF basic training in 1976. You girls and guys have the benefit of modern communication to share what to expect in the experience. Back then, you just jumped in and learned to sink or swim. But, joining the AF will be the best decision you ever make. Take on the challenge with a gusto. AIM HIGH!!!

I wouldn't be much of an expert on the subject considering I didn't study! And from the way you describe it, I would say yes. Your hair has to be one color, not including "natural" highlights and what not.

This is really helpful. I served the Philippine Air Force for 4 years then I migrated here in US two yrs ago and had been planning on joining the USAF and these tips and advices you share is REALLLLLLY Helpful. Im still contemplating whether if I should or shouldnt join since i have a little boy now and my husband just got out of a 6 year service. Please continue to make videos like these. They're really helpful!
I’m glad they let you bring your own soap! I thought they didn’t allow that and it made me so nervous because I have specific soap or I break out really bad.

I was in 83-89. Good advice. Bring what you would bring on a one day vacation. The clothes you're wearing and an extra. Travel sized personal items and not to much. EVERYTHING else will go into storage. Anything else you'll need to buy at the BX (Base Exchange). Phones, electronic devices, ANYTHING not military go into storage. You wear what THEY authorize and provide. Anything flashy? Leave it at HOME. You're entering a medieval world you WILL be a clone of the person on both sides and in front and back of you. Don't stand out.

Can you bring stud earrings for your graduation and when doing your make up for your graduation also for your pictures how much time do they give you
You can not wear earrings at all during BMT, to include for photos or graduation. I remember getting about 30 minutes to do makeup for photos, but you can not wear makeup for graduation

Make sure when you go to MEPS you know if you wanna sign a 4-year or 6-year contract, I went in wanting a 4-year and was tricked into a 6-year. So just know exactly what you want! I always recommend 4 because you can always add more years, you can't take them away (without extreme circumstances). BUT GOOD LUCK!

My brother is an airman and I know that he said that you can’t have the floss picks. The drill Sargent or whoever it was told them it was considered as a weapon so they made them throw it out.

You can bring any chapstick your heart desires :) No matter the color haha. I wouldn't bring anything that looks like lipstick, but I don't think there's anything saying it can't be tinted. The color of the tube can be whatever color, too. (I didn't know which you were referring to)

Chopped off my hair to a short Bob and dyed it back to natural color. Planning on getting a Brazilian Blowout before I go so it stays sleek and in place without spending time or using product. Only thing is I would have to use a sulfate free shampoo so travel size is probably not an option for me but will try to get a smaller bottle...

I've seen hiking pants and these sort of...zumba pants? That are super lightweight material and fit like long cargo pants or cropped cargos. That's what I was imagining when sharing the info haha

Do they give you money from your paycheck to buy things like the watch or do I have to bring my own card also regarding feminine products, are we allowed to bring some or do they provide those for us?

Can you wear braids? Like if I join and I want to have my hair in box braids? Do they make you cut your hair ?
Braids are allowed, you can find the specifics if you look up AFI 36-2903 (make sure it's the most recent one from 2018). There's rules regarding size of braids and spacing between them all

basic training is usually 6-10 weeks!! and there’s not a lot of hang out time lol

Thanks for all the videos! I ship out 5/29. I've been really worried about sunscreen. Can you bring it? Do you think I'll have time to apply it? I've heard some people say it wasn't allowed and others said they make you put it on. I'm worried because I get burnt so easily. I know you're mostly covered but I'm worried about my hands and face.
Omg how could I forget about sunscreen! YES you can bring it, I didn't even think to bring some and had to borrow this one girl's until we went to the store and I could buy some myself. You will definitely have time to apply it, so I recommend you bring it, ESPECIALLY if you burn easily. I'm sorry I left that out of the list! It's a really great idea to bring some.

How often are you able to go to the store to buy things? I know you go there when you first arrive, but what if you forget something during the first time, are you allowed to go back?
I'm not certain...maybe once a week? But I do remember our MTI allowing us to go back if we forgot something important. In that case he would send you back with a buddy, with a little slip to carry on you in case you get stopped by anyone else lol.
I ship February 19th, and your videos are beyond helpful! I did however, have a question about makeup. I know we probably won’t have time to do full face, but what kind of makeup do you recommend bringing?!

Leaving for bmt next week!! I have a question: so for underwear and bras and socks, if we bring our own, is it okay if they have logos on them?
For underwear and bras, it doesn't matter. They can be whatever you want. For socks, they end up giving you uniform ones, but for the first few days when you're wearing your own clothes, bring socks with small logos. The Nike check, Under Armour logo, etc are okay.
I’m a wife and a mother of 3! I was thinking in continúe with the AF process but I started to see this videos of Sargents perturbing girls and ladies telling their sexual harassment testimonies! Even with peers! Did you experience something like this?
Hi Elora Jean! It's my 1st time to watch your AF videos and I'm enjoying them!! I'm just wondering. Are cellphones or mobile phones allowed to bring on BMT? If no, when can you have your phone?
Hey! I'm glad you're into the videos, cellphones are definitely allowed but they will be taken from you and stored in a locked box. You will be able to use your phone periodically to call your family, but you won't have it in your possession.

Oh yeah! I definitely recommend bringing a tiny little bottle of that. If you can't bring one that is TSA-compliant, you can buy some at the store there when you go a few days after arriving to BMT

Keep up the videos!!! They are great. So about the things they give you,if you already bought some of the items. Do you have to take what they give you? This way we don’t get charge for something we won’t use. Also do you think a baby g-shock is flashy?? It’s black water resistant an really old. Plus it tells military time.
You receive every single item they give you, whether you brought it or not. I don't know if it's a uniformity thing or what, but I would save your money and just take what they give you. I found myself using 90% of the stuff even after BMT so it wasn't horrible. If it's solid black you'll be fine! One of the people in my flight had a G-shock watch that worked for her.
So did you just bring multiple travel size bottles? If so where do you put the extras?
Pretty good video, maybe try to include an introduction or sometime to give the video more catching power. Also, how do you rember all of these things from basic training?
I appreciate the feedback! I can remember a lot of things just because it was such a huge part of my life, but I did have a notebook that I used to keep track of what we did weekly

Yes! Bras and panties can be whatever color, print, pattern, etc.

You get like...15 ish minutes? Sometimes it was less, sometimes it was more. If you weren't really being watched, or if it was a Sunday and no MTI was around, it was way more lax.

The gas chamber is definitely stressful, but if you remind yourself it's all over in less than 4 minutes, it's not horrible! You're in discomfort for a short amount of time and then it's done.

You can bring your phones, they do take them to store in a locked closet, but allow you to use them a few times while you're there

I brought a debit card to BMT, but they end up giving you this prepaid debit card with like $200 as an advance from your future paycheck.
My eyebrows grow so quickly and I’d rather not have to rock a unibrow all through basics. Any advice?
what face wash do you suggest? & we HAVE to run while wearing glasses? I wear glasses but when I run I never wear them and do fine haha
I'm not sure...whatever works for your skin type, really. I use Dove bar soap for sensitive skin but I know it's kindof inconvenient to have a bar. And I guess you don't HAVE to wear them, but you're gonna be wearing eye glasses straps so they won't go anywhere.

Random question. Can you have piercings. I have a belly button ring and haven’t taken it out in a year I think it’s stuck but would I need to take it out?
I heard that everything has to be out, I have a belly button an tongue and 2 in one ear an 3 in another ear, and from multiple people I heard they sneak in clear piercings an hide them
You can not have piercings or jewelry in basic i dont think after they care but i have to remove all my piercings when I leave

I love your videos! I’m planning on enlisting and I’m super nervous. My question is what can you wear to graduation?
Thanks! And that's great, to graduation you can wear your uniform lol. You don't wear civilian clothes at all in your time during BMT other than the first few days of arriving (when you don't have uniforms yet) and the last day when you fly to tech school. You wear OCPs to the coin ceremony and blues to the actual graduation parade. It was ABUs when I went through but I believe the new people going through are getting OCPs.
What do you wear for pajamas? Or do you bring your own?
Are we allowed to have tweezers?
I know they say to try and stay low profile, but my running shoes are a bright blue. Would you suggest I get new ones?
I think you'll be okay, there were some girls with bright pink or green shoes so it really shouldn't matter.

How often are you around guns ? & in basic training, how long do you focus on them & what do you have to do ? I hate guns, I just want to be a photojournalist. Lol & also do you ever fly very often ?? I’ve been in an airplane once & I really liked it but I’d like to be prepared for stuff like that.
During BMT you're issued a weapon that looks and feels like an M16 rifle, which you learn to assemble and disassemble all throughout your training. You carry it around a lot, and use it while you're doing entry-controller duty (guarding the dorm door at night). During BEAST week you're also carrying it around very often, but only during one day do you actually shoot the real thing. You shouldn't really deal with guns as a photojournalist aside from BMT, and then if you need to attend training again before deploying. You have to remember your commitment to the military might put you in situations you're otherwise uncomfortable with, like handling a weapon, and if you're not ready for that then I don't think joining would necessarily be the best thing. You know yourself the best though, so it's up to you! As for the planes, I know some friends who have gone on a few flight assignments, but I've yet to do so. It all depends on where you go and what kind of assignment you have.

Okay so I was hoping you'd cover earrings when you were talking about jewellery. I can take a guess that more than one hole isn't allowed but did you wear earrings at BMT? I have 4 ear holes each and a industrial bar.....
Jewelry is not allowed during BMT! And in the actual operational field, you can only wear one pair of earrings in the lowest piercing of the lobe. You have to take everything else out in uniform.

Hi! I really appreciate you making these videos! They are super informative and are giving me a lot of knowledge I didn't have previously. That being said, I'm extremely interested in joining the air force but I'm worried I'll get denied due to the tattoo I have on my wrist. It's two birds and both are about 2 inches by 2 inches. Do you think that would be okay? Also, what's the age range that most of your fellow airmen were around during BMT?
I have a tattoo on my wrist and it’s fine! you just can’t have tattoos on your hands, face, or neck. Basically anywhere that would be seen while in uniform. Hope this helps!
If you bring travel size shampoos and conditioner how Are you supposed to refill it without bringing full-size bottles
QuęęN Hoez Lame you bring multiple, but in all honesty, you can bring full size but you’ll need to have your luggage be luggage and not a carry on bag on the air plane. Also it’s not really recommended you bring shampoo and conditioner, they give you a 2in 1 shampoo and conditioner and a body wash. You don’t really have time to condition. You get like a 1.5 min shower. But to keep your hair healthier I do recommend bringing like a hair oil, it also helps with fly always on buns
Your job is photo journalist right? I was under the impression that that job drop out of my qualify list as soon as I finished MEPS due to me wearing glasses. I just realize you wear glasses too?!
I am a photojournalist! That's really strange the job got taken off of your list...I've never heard wearing glasses disqualifies you, unless something has changed. Maybe you had other vision problems? I don't know! Maybe you should bring it up if you still have time.

That's good! I was in the DEP for like 8 months but that was by my choice, I told my recruiter I didn't want to leave until after a certain date.

How did the laundry situation work? Like did anybody's clothes get mixed up? I would hate to see someone walking around in my undergarments lol
That's a great question! Basically they make you mark all of your clothes with the initial of your last name plus the last four of your social security number, which allows everyone to sort out the laundry correctly. The laundry is washed together, and everyone teams up to distribute it based on that label combo, which you write on the bottom of your flip-flops (they issue these) and hang on your bed so people can match the clothes to the flip-flop. I hope that makes sense haha, usually undergarments are pretty unique but if you have some really generic stuff you can just write your label on it!
What about earrings? Like, super small and simple studs (to keep piercings from closing up.)
You are not allowed to wear any jewelry in BMT beside a wedding ring (maybe an engagement ring?). You can wear small earrings once you are completed with BMT

I'm curious if AF reserves and AF active duty go to the same bmt?
Everyone in the Air Force, whether it be active duty, guard or reserves goes to the same BMT!
So I have extremely long hair. It reaches my butt. I have no intention of cutting it. I use a LOT of shampoo and conditioner. Like small travel sized bottles would last me 3-4 washes, if that. Would there be opportunities to refill the travel sized ones??
What about feminine products for time of month?
So your military sister needs your help she's being MISSING after being SEXUALLY assaulted in a military BASE so they found some human remains and they dont know whos remains have being found but the search has been called of she is still missing. So how does some one come up MISSING from a military BASE with out any one knowing when you left she needs some she can trust to help her she needs your help ask questions
Can you bring a face wash that contains alcohol? Without my face wash I get bad breakouts!
