It's not in the video because I forgot that one as well, but the main difference between the element leaders and the dorm chief, is the dorm chief has more responsibility. They are in charge of taking roll, announcing the flight in classrooms, problem-solving when things go wrong when the MTI isn't there, and overall giving out instructions when they need to. Typically the MTI will choose who seems to be the oldest or most mature individual in the flight, as the dorm chief needs to have a good head on their shoulders and a higher patience.

“Chow runner go!” Don’t be a chow runner, it’s bad. Did it during airmen week so there was no yelling. ECP monitor is better. Chow runner isn’t too bad, just keep your baring. Also if you are in the new dorms, laundry is apart of the dorm so no slacking. If you are in Disneyland congrats you live better but everyone with have to help latrine crew as big as the bathroom are, if you live in the old dorms Gotham has better food terrible pt pad. KP duty is the best, free desert and talking while eating.
Elora Jean I had a lot of fun at BMT! I just wished that I watched your videos back then because I literally knew nothing. I was told to not volunteer for anything so when they started assigning jobs in boot camp I didn’t raise my hand. I got assigned Academic Monitor later on because the MTIs found out that I didn’t have a job lol. I’m currently stationed at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas Nevada. It’s pretty cool out here. The base is about 20 minutes from the strip.
Elora I came across your videos about a week ago and I've been watching non stop ☺ I just love your personality! And your air force videos are so helpful since I'm considering joining. Love how informative you are ❤️ . I’m such a girly girl so the sweating and being hot would bother me ALOT lol so I’m thinking going after the summer (so in about 2 months) what would you recommend?
Thank you! If you think you'll do better in the cooler months, it's not a bad idea to wait until after summer. Although you'll be sweating and getting dirty no matter what
but what if the job you want to do in the AF comes up in July? If you wait until say September ... would there be a possibility the job would no longer be available? If you want a job that is hard to come by ... say Flight attendant ... wouldn't it be better to sign as soon as it comes up? Thank you for your informative vlogs ... this parent of a future AF trainee appreciates YOU! 🌺
If you're an EC monitor, do you get to schedule good EC duty shifts for yourself? Thinking about volunteering if there's a chance I can avoid doing 2-4 am EC duty since that would really suck haha. I rather put up with the social stress of people not liking me as much rather than getting stuck with doing EC duty at crappy hours
I think my brother was something called arms master or something like that? Basically he was in charge of weaponry and making sure it was all in order. Have any commentary on that?
I literally had to sub for nearly every job except dorm chief there was a lot of sick calls including myself which then I had to train someone for my jobs. I was in battle field airman. I ended up separating 2 weeks before graduation due to med holding over several flu viruses as I stayed running a fever for a months and a half. But I’m going back and Sadly I have to go back through it and I’m likely will be a element leader or dorm chief since I subbed as element leader a few times and every other job never got in trouble MTI’s new my name faster than the rest before name tabs lol. Instead of PJ this time I’m doing med service tech or emergency management.
Okay, so... since I'm a momma of 3 boys - how on earth do the laundry peeps not mix up peoples' stuff? I am thinking about stitching a little dot of colored thread in the seams of my stuff I bring with to BMT (the packing list items sports bras/shorts/ undies) ... what did you do and what do you recommend?
Omg please don't stitch in your kids' clothing haha one of the first thing we did was label our items with the first letter of our last name, and then the last 4 digits of our social security number. Everyone's label was unique, so we used that to sort laundry accordingly.
I really enjoy doing laundry at home, it's kind of a relaxation period for me. When these job assignments come around do they ask for volunteers for any job or is it just random from the get-go?
Your videos are very informative. You mentioned you were at the front because of your height? How tall are you? Does your height matter where you stand in line? Also awesome job and keep up the good work. 🤗 p.s-also I'm in California and thinking of joining or "being considered to be able to".
I was so worried about getting a trainee job at bmt and now after hearing this. I want to volunteer for laundry duty. Also I feel more aware of what am walking into.
Thank you! So, you're allowed to bring your phone, and they allow you to use it about 4 times? You get a call near the beginning so you can tell your family about when graduation is and what not, then you get two or three more times on your cell in addition to that. There are times you will get what's called a patio break, that happens about twice or something like that, and there are payphones available there. You need to have those prepaid phone cards though to use the phones
How would you keep from bleeding on underwear 🤣😭 That’s the only thing I’m stressing over. My damn period and I’m I’m super clean but if it’s crazy there idk how we can help it lol
dorm chief job sucks, you get yelled at when the flight screws up.. . our chief was about 6 five and had to shave twice a day. he was 29 years old and skinny as a rail. he was good at the job but he would complain about it. i was a squad leader and it sucked but you did get out of details and dorm guard duty.
Hey! Do you know if eczema is allowed when enlisting for the airforce? I’m about to enlist but I have eczema and I read online that I can’t have it because of the small pox vaccine that would potentially kill a person with eczema
the small pox vaccine can potentially kill anyone. people with eczema may have a higher risk. of your eczema does not affect your day to day life you most likely can get a waiver for it when enlisting. and not everyone gets the smallpox vaccine. only before you will deploy. and even then they do not give people who have eczema the vaccine when deploying.
Why did you choose to join the Air Force instead of doing college first? I have been having a hard problem choosing what I wanted to do first. I need some help and insight on what programs there are on becoming an officer when you are active duty enlisted. If you can help me out, I would love that.
Sooo I did about a year of college first, of random classes that weren't really taking me anywhere. I'm not familiar with the process of becoming an officer after you're enlisted, but I can try to find someone who does!
Everyone's laundry is washed together, and in order to know whose is whose, we tag everything with the first letter of our last name plus the last 4 digits of our social security number. For example, my t-shirts would be labeled with sharpie: "A1234"
Thank you for this video so helpful!! But I do have a question, why do some people say to never volunteer for any of the jobs even the easy ones? They say just not to
Thanks for watching! I would say probably because they're lazy lol. I didn't mention this but if you have an assigned job, you might get extra little bonus points that add up for whether or not you get honor grad.
I just want to thank you for these videos! I’m in the process of joining Air Force through scholarship and I’ve been super nervous about it since the beginning. I just have one question, in a previous video you said that we have to know our rank when we sign. How do we get that information? Is it something that is on the paperwork given? Thank you!
When you receive a contract to sign, it will lay out the details of your enlistment. It will say on there what rank you will go in as and what date you're supposed to rank up. Make sure that's correct!
I remember the title of "House Mouse" from 1976, but I forget what his duties were -- "Latrine Queen" was self-explanatory as they had to work into the evening to make the latrine inspection-ready (we all had to shave the night before, but as the latrine cleaning progressed we ended up restricted to only one wash basin). I was on the brass-polishing detail in the dorm, my first introduction to Brass-O. We were in the then-new 3-story dorm buildings ( a one-story core containing Admin, messing, and classrooms with wings containing two floors of dorms (2nd and 3rd floors) which also provided cover for open areas under them (cover from the rain). Those were the new alternatives to the WWII barracks that they still had (our BMT study guides included sections for making your WWII barrack inspection-ready). My KP duties revolved mainly around reloading the mechanical cow (ie, the milk dispenser). Plus the KP detail always ate before everybody else. It was only once or twice I had to help out in the scullery -- nasty work. And when we marched, I was a road guard ("Road guards in and road guards out! Road guards running all about! Wish I had a high IQ, I could be a road guard too!"). Do they still issue recruits "Lackland Lasers"? Translucent yellow plastic cones to attach to our flashlights for high visibility for the road guards to stop traffic. My great-nephew enlisted in the Air Force a few years ago, so I looked at a UA-cam about BMT. Now they have dummy M-16's to make inspection-ready (don't know if they're like police academies' "Red Guns" (my son is a cop) or if they're real M-16's that have been disabled). Well, that's something new.
Thank you for this video!! I do have a question though. When you get to BMT, how are the jobs chosen? And are you "trained" at all in the job so you know what to do? Thank you so much love!
The jobs are pretty much randomly given out, except for maybe dorm chief. Usually the MTI will pick whoever seems to be the oldest/most mature. You don't really get trained in all of the jobs, just whatever one you're given. If you're given a job that requires more practice and effort,m such as chow runner or guide-on bearer, you'll get special instructions before being thrown into it.
OK, I was active duty Air Force but then affiliated with the Navy Reserve from which I retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Your question just brought my chief out. Sorry, but nobody questions the Chief. Nor the Chief's imparting his wisdom upon you (AKA, "counselling"). The Navy has this traditional career path in which you enlist and serve on ships during which time you become acquainted with the various ratings (ie, skill specialities) by workign with them and seeing what they do. Then at some point you decide to "strike" for one of those ratings, at which point you are referred to as "a striker." The Air Force was (in my time (circa 1976) and I'm sure is still the same) different. Your recruiter schedules you for a series of aptitude tests (The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) ) which is a measure of your already-acquired skills but also, far far more importantly, what you should be able to learn. On the basis of your ASVAB scores, your recruiter shows you a list of Military Occupational Specialities (MOS's) that you qualify for -- in my time that was called our AFSC, "Air Force Specialty Code", so apparently at some point the Air Force adopted the Army's MOS system. Whatever. OK, from my time (1976), when you enlisted in the Air Force you went in having selected a particular career path based on your ASVAB scores. During BMT, career counselors may try to divert you elsewhere, which can be good or bad, depending ... (eg, I had a BA German and a background in several foreign languages plus a Defense Language Aptitude Test score (DLAT -- there was a missionary type when I tested who wanted desperately to get language training and had failed that same test a couple times already, but it was so simple that I completed the hour-and-a-half test in less than 30 minutes. They obviously wanted me for SIGINT work, but my skills with languages is much more with the grammars than with the spoken words). Based on those choices, when you graduated from Basic Military Training (BMT) you went to a tech school for training in your chosen specialty. And then upon graduating form that school, you would go to your Permanent Duty Assignment (PDA) to ply your chosen trade. So what if that didn't work out? What if your dream job in the Air Force didn't meet your expectations? In my time (circa 1976), we had a concept of "cross-training". Does that still exist? Basically, towards the end of your first USAF enlistment you have the option of requesting cross-training to a new career path. In my 305x4 class (Electronic Computer Systems Repairman) we had a Staff Sergeant as a student who was cross-training from some other AFSC..
Can you talk a little bit on how to become whatever they call the valedictorian of the class? Lol not sure what they call it for airforce bmt, but you know what I mean.
I think youre talking about honor graduate. To qualify for honor grad you must get at least a 90% on your EOC, and meet the minimum standard of thunderbolt on your PT, which is a 12 minute 1 &1/2 mile run, 32 pushups, 55 situps, and 2 pullups.
Elora Jean did the 5’0 girl have a hard time with the obstacle course? I saw some videos and it looked like it was NOT made for short people. Just wondering
cren189 every trainee does EC duty. Depending what shift you get assigned, you basically have to stand for 2 hrs guarding the front door to your dorm. Its pretty shitty not gonna lie. Pro tip - dont fuck up the EC procedures.
Entry Control (EC) monitor is a job everyone in the flight does. There is one person who is assigned to create the weekly schedule, so that's a stressful job because everyone is trying to ask you to switch around the time you gave them. EC duty lasts for shifts of two hours, with two people on shift. You basically are in charge of guarding the dorm, making sure whoever comes inside is allowed to be there. There are procedures you learn regarding how to ask for ID, what to report, etc. It's a pain in the ass to be on EC duty from 2-4 in the morning (or any shift through the night), but if you're on it with someone cool you can end up writing letters or just hanging out. In general though, no one likes it haha
It's a pretty high percentage! I wanna say almost everyone makes it, the reasons people might fail out or have to delay graduation is for medical reasons, or...they just can't take it mentally? I don't know exact percentages, out of my flight only 2 girls quit because they decided it's not what they wanted to do, and two were put in medical hold for injuries they received that prevented them from continuing through the training. Aside from that I'm not too sure what the actual rates of passing are and likelihood of failing, but it's not great.
The only reason you might rotate is if your MTI chooses to switch people around for whatever reason. Otherwise, once you're assigned to something that's pretty much it.
Hey! So engineering is sort of a broad term. There is the Civil Engineer Squadron, which consists of multiple career fields to include firefighters, plumbers, contractors, heating, ventilation and air conditioning technicians, etc. There are a ton of different branches! Any you are particularly interested in?
Wow How did you forget dorm chief lol but thank you very informative.
I KNOW RIGHT?! If you have any specific questions about what they do I'd be happy to answer lol
Did you remember EC MONITOR and what is the difference between element leader and dorm chief?
It's not in the video because I forgot that one as well, but the main difference between the element leaders and the dorm chief, is the dorm chief has more responsibility. They are in charge of taking roll, announcing the flight in classrooms, problem-solving when things go wrong when the MTI isn't there, and overall giving out instructions when they need to. Typically the MTI will choose who seems to be the oldest or most mature individual in the flight, as the dorm chief needs to have a good head on their shoulders and a higher patience.
I love to solve problems with maximum efficiency Unfortunately I will probably be too young to be a dorm chief so my next best bet is element leader. Thank you
Probably forgot about it cause you always want to forget about your dorm chief

Do they still got the "house mouse" as a job in BMT? That was my job 23 years ago. Maybe they changed the name.
Did you really go thru BMT? You and a buddy? Study book?
Do stairwell crew I did it lol most skate job ever all I had to do was wipe rails and wipe the windows of the MTIs office
How do you prepare for your pt training?
Are the beds single beds or stacked bunks?
NightMaiden273 stacked.
how tall are you?
how tall are you? im 5’11 & i would hate getting that job & being in charge
I'm 5'9" haha you just might get it!
How and when do they decide who gets a job
It usually happens within the first few days, and sometimes it's random...but for some jobs, they will ask for volunteers.
Elora Jean thank you !
How tall is she? Idk if she answered this anywhere else already oops
I am 5'9"
@@EloraJean that's awesome! I'm 5'8, all of my friends are short so I always get crap for it lol
At what point do you have to choose your career within the Air Force?
OK, I was active duty Air Force but then affiliated with the Navy Reserve from which I retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Your question just brought my chief out. Sorry, but nobody questions the Chief. Nor the Chief's imparting his wisdom upon you (AKA, "counselling").
The Navy has this traditional career path in which you enlist and serve on ships during which time you become acquainted with the various ratings (ie, skill specialities) by workign with them and seeing what they do. Then at some point you decide to "strike" for one of those ratings, at which point you are referred to as "a striker."
The Air Force was (in my time (circa 1976) and I'm sure is still the same) different.
@@davidwise1302 - Thank you!
Road guard was fun lol
How tall are you? I'm tall and don't particularly want to be an element leader but I'm sure this isn't the only factor lol.
I'm 5'9", and yes it does take more than height to be an element leader lol
My brother just graduated bmt as flt 626
I’m leaving to BMT in a month! Any updated tips? 😭
Good luck! I recommend bringing flushable wipes in case the toilet paper runs out hahaha
I leave next month too 😭
Message me!!

You said you are tall. So from one tall girl to another how tall are you?
5'9" :)
@@EloraJean I am also 5' 9"
Can you talk a little bit on how to become whatever they call the valedictorian of the class? Lol not sure what they call it for airforce bmt, but you know what I mean.
I think youre talking about honor graduate. To qualify for honor grad you must get at least a 90% on your EOC, and meet the minimum standard of thunderbolt on your PT, which is a 12 minute 1 &1/2 mile run, 32 pushups, 55 situps, and 2 pullups.
Do you have to be a certain height to join?
I don't think so, I'm not sure if there's a minimum requirement for height, I had a girl in my flight who was like 5-foot
I don't think you can be less than 4ft 10 ins ...
Elora Jean did the 5’0 girl have a hard time with the obstacle course? I saw some videos and it looked like it was NOT made for short people. Just wondering
isn't there something call EC monitor?
cren189 every trainee does EC duty.
Sweet, thank you!
new subbie!
how often do people not graduate from BMT? and what are the most common reasons they don’t make it?
It's a pretty high percentage! I wanna say almost everyone makes it, the reasons people might fail out or have to delay graduation is for medical reasons, or...they just can't take it mentally? I don't know exact percentages, out of my flight only 2 girls quit because they decided it's not what they wanted to do, and two were put in medical hold for injuries they received that prevented them from continuing through the training. Aside from that I'm not too sure what the actual rates of passing are and likelihood of failing, but it's not great.
I don't think you do but i have heard from some people that you rotate jobs while your at BMT, is that true?
The only reason you might rotate is if your MTI chooses to switch people around for whatever reason. Otherwise, once you're assigned to something that's pretty much it.
Save yourself 19 minutes of dribble. Dorm Gaurd Monitor. Make 1 schedule and you are done for BMT, easiest job ever.
You forgot dorm room chief
Ray Brandon check out the pinned comment!
Ok, thanks
All this jobs are for the new people?
Yup! As soon as you get to BMT, within the first few days you are assigned one of these jobs.
Elora Jean can you choose your job ?
So much facial expressions 😭
so what did u do exactly when u were in bmt
I was an element leader!
Talk about engineering please.
Hey! So engineering is sort of a broad term. There is the Civil Engineer Squadron, which consists of multiple career fields to include firefighters, plumbers, contractors, heating, ventilation and air conditioning technicians, etc. There are a ton of different branches! Any you are particularly interested in?
AF engineering.
