You can also chisel out the back of the shelf so you can inset the bracket so the shelf will be flush to the wall ..

Beginner doesn’t necessarily mean no tools. It’s a bit hard to build something with no tools..

Wait what if the other side of the shelf isn’t on a stud? If the shelf is 8in shouldn’t I get a 6in wood?

You would use anchors if it isn’t in a stud! Just be sure the anchors can hold heavy weight. If I understand correct, you’re asking if the wood is 8in should you use an 8in bracket? No, because the bracket would go all the way through the wood, and you want it hidden inside. So if you want an 8in wood shelf, I suggest 6-7in long bracket!
