When I was still at school in 1965 , I knew an Irish kid Gerry Doran who’s elder brother had a lot of records I had never heard ,, the first one that literaly made the hair on the back of my neck stand ,,orange blossom special , by Johnny cash , and I was a fan for life
My grandfathers uncle wrote the orange blossom special. I have this album and the back of the cover is Johnny's narration of meeting Ervin Rouse. My grandfather was James Rouse. Ervin Rouse was his uncle. I love my familys recording of it but I am a big Cash fan so I love his version equally.
Tommy Magness a Blue Ridge GA native taught Chubby Wise and Rouse the song, look up the book “Orange Blossom Boys: The untold story of Ervin T. Rouse, Chubby Wise.” It goes on to tell that Magness played it for Wise in a Hotel room in Stauton, Virginia. Tommy ended up playing it on the radio and at The Grand Ole Opry (pg. 87) but story told that Magness and Wise lost the license to the song to Rouse over poker and Rouse would later go to record the song!
Hi Jeannie here. My sweet Daddy played his harmonica to this and he was an Awesome guitar artist. . Electric and bass.. Miss you Daddy💙Rest in Peace Johnny ♥♥
But you did go to Florida Johnny at WPLG with Gordon Lightfoot and Ian Anderson and I didn't even know who you were. I never heard this song before today I love it.
Had the fortune to see Cash 5 times in concert '71-'91 (No. 5 with Highwayman)... '73 had front row seat in Sydney show then three weeks later front row in Las Vegas... only disappointment on both shows I didn't get to catch his harmonicas on Orange Blossom Special he threw to audience at end of song...
Lyrics: Look a-yonder comin' Comin' down that railroad track Hey, look a-yonder comin' Comin' down that railroad track It's the Orange Blossom Special Bringin' my baby back Well, I'm going down to Florida And get some sand in my shoes Or maybe Californy And get some sand in my shoes I'll ride that Orange Blossom Special And lose these New York blues "Say man, when you going back to Florida?" "When am I goin' back to Florida? I don't know, don't reckon I ever will." "Ain't you worried about getting your nourishment in New York?" "Well, I don't care if I do-die-do-die-do-die-do-die." Hey talk about a-ramblin' She's the fastest train on the line Talk about a-travellin' She's the fastest train on the line It's that Orange Blossom Special Rollin' down the seaboard line
This was so funny and happened years ago. We were eating at Macaroni Grill Italian restaurant over on Northwest Expressway in OKC and the guy would come to your table and you could request a song. I think I requested Orange Blossom Special and I swear I thought the guy was going to break his back playing it on his fiddle! We laughed and laughed, and I think the guy was insulted, but we did tip him well. Clearly this was NOT the right song to request!!! Lolz
he makes the song less about the fiddle and more about voice - though his own sounds a little drunk during the exchange between the third and fourth verse.
HE MADE THE CLOUDS MOVE
I have this original vinyl record still in its original wrapping that I got after my grandma passed away. One of my most prized possessions
I want it
Never ever opened? Oh my god! You've got yourself a golden treasure!
Keep it forever!
Lucky!
Amazed at the number of train sounds Johnny Cash makes.
But not the quality 😂
He didn’t write this. It’s an old folk song
My only complaint, the song isn’t long enough! I could listen to this song till the end of time.
It's a favorite of mine 👍❤️ 1:21
Love that harmonica
Me too.
You mean "Harmonicai"? ;p
HOHNER
Same ❤
You should definitely check for Buddy Greene's cover. Just insane!
He is still the Everyman's Singer and America's ballladeer!
Amen!!!!!!!

Johnny Cash was a gift sent to us from Jesus H. Christ Himself. Mercy Sakes!!!
I'm pretty sure Jesus doesn't have a middle name that starts with H😂
For sure a true gift.
Amen! A true gift to us all. Such a beautiful soul. 💙

For My Good friend " Skipper Roy " Great Memories! From your Good friend Colyn. R.I.P Skipper Roy. Many thanks and Kind regards Colyn.
Rock Island Line is his best train song for me.
Fun fact: the Orange Blossom Special wasn't the fastest train on the Seaboard line. That would have been the Silver Meteor.
Interesting
Did both go the same route?
Thanks for sharing!
I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
I believe now it’s the CSX I031/I032
