*History of the Big Iron* --- The "Big Iron" that inspired this song was originally built by Andy Anderson (a Hollywood gun-maker and fast-draw holster-maker favored by Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood) in his Gunfighter shop, using parts from several models. The gun was constructed with a Great Western frame and a 12" barrel made from an 1892 Winchester center-fire .44 rifle/carbine barrel. Since Anderson was 6'4" with large hands, he favored Colt 1860 Army grips and so fixed a grip frame from an 1860 Army pistol and added a Great Western cylinder chambered for .44 Magnum loads. Marty Robbins was in the shop on the day the finished gun was sold. The purchaser, also a very large man, impressed Marty by the speed of his fast draw. One week later, Anderson received in the mail a recording of "Big Iron," which Marty had written immediately after seeing the gun demonstrated. The song "Big Iron" was first released to the public on the _Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs_ album in September 1959, then as a single in February 1960. Today, the gun which so inspired Robbins resides in a private collection (see, esp., The Fast Draw Resource Center, also _cf_ Shooting Chef, Waxahachie TX).
@@uns3ri0us Robbins happened to see the custom-created gun at its completion and witnessed its first, fast-draw demonstration. He was so inspired that he immediately wrote the song, the gun's maker receiving a copy of the musical composition within the week!
My dad used to play country songs during our BBQ’s when I was a kid, and this was one of the songs that he would frequently play. As an adult, I tried to find the name of the song for years but could never find it. I picked up New Vegas recently and did a double take when I heard the song again after so many years.
Everybody talks about the Arizona ranger who carries a big iron on hip, but no one talks about the Arizona ranger who carries on his hip the Arizona ranger who carries the big iron on his hip.
"Cleared leather" is such a badass description. I know its a common phrase but Marty uses it a lot in his songs and it really drives home that cowboy feeling.
There are two euphemisms for "drawing a pistol" that I've always wanted to properly use in context: 1) [of course] "cleared leather", Marty Robbins, 2) "skin that smokewagon", Wyatt Earp [Kurt Russel], Tombstone
I’m glad he did all the dialogue with the town members and got the quick time achievement, you see so many any% glitch runs and it’s nice to see someone actually go through with 100%
45 Colt or .44-40... 44 CALIBER .40 GRAINS OF BLACK POWDER. Elmer Keith didn't invent the .357 Magnum until the 1930s and the 44 Mag didn't come along until the 1950s. 45 Colt would also be acceptable. No need to call it 45 LONG Colt. If it's .45 Colt and it's not .45 ACP it's an old revolver round. The other ones were .36 Navy, .32-20 (kind of anemic) 38-40, etc. 32 Colt, 32 Long Colt, .32 S&W. Big iron? 45 Colt or .44-40. I forget what Steve McQueen used in Dead or Alive. I think it was cut down 44-40 with 45-70 bullets on the belt to make it look a lot more bad-ass.
Marty Robbins had a wonderful Voice. I love his Ghost Riders In The Sky Song. And in the 1993 Tomstone Movie there was an Red Sash Cowboy named Texas Red. That Tombstone movie is so good, tons of great actors. Val Kilmer was a Great Doc Hoilday. Dana Delany the Beautiful Singer, Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp. That movie and Silverado are my 2 Favorite 1990s Westerns. Along with Louis l'Amours Shaddow Riders, Crossfire Trail movies staring Tom ❤Selleck..Sam Elliot. Really Great Western movies!! My late Husband Loved Louis l'Amour Books, and alot of his stores they made into Western Movies that were great. Also on old Western TV 1950s or 60s I've noticed in the Credits❤❤ saying Story by Louis l'Amour. 😅😅
I'll admit, I didn't know Marty Robbins til Fallout:New Vegas. But I recently got a record player and got this as one of my two first (the other being the ink spots) vinyls. The whole album is amazing.
I am about to turn 59. I first heard this when I was 4. My dad had the Gunfighter Ballads album, which I have today. I knew every song on it by the time I was 6. I wonder did Marty Robbins know he wouldve had all us in awe of his chanting and story telling all these years later
He knew... That's why he made this song
@@uns3ri0us Robbins happened to see the custom-created gun at its completion and witnessed its first, fast-draw demonstration. He was so inspired that he immediately wrote the song, the gun's maker receiving a copy of the musical composition within the week!

As an adult, I tried to find the name of the song for years but could never find it. I picked up New Vegas recently and did a double take when I heard the song again after so many years.

"Cleared leather" is such a badass description. I know its a common phrase but Marty uses it a lot in his songs and it really drives home that cowboy feeling.
Kinda like a sheriff saying shuck them hog legs boys lol
There are two euphemisms for "drawing a pistol" that I've always wanted to properly use in context:
1) [of course] "cleared leather", Marty Robbins,
2) "skin that smokewagon", Wyatt Earp [Kurt Russel], Tombstone
"GO AHEAD!!!SKIN IT!!SKIN THAT SMOKE WAGON!!"'-Wyatt Earp(Kurt Russel)"Tombstone".
I for one like the term "fill your hand", or as John Wayne said in True Grit: "Fill your hand you sonofabitch!"
Yo this shit is a beat, can’t wait for my turn
I wonder if there's an Arizona ranger with big diamond sword on his hip.

Nice profile picture

The slave has been spreading rumors about the burned man
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side slowly lookin' all around
He's an outlaw loose and running, came the whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer though a youth of 24
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and 19 more
One and 19 more
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around
Was an Arizona ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter he was after Texas Red
After Texas Red
Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry men that tried before were dead
20 men had tried to take him, 20 men had made a slip
21 would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet
It was 20 past 11 when they walked out in the street
Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath
They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death
About to meet his death
There was 40 feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
