We said hello to each other on 23th and Chelsea in the Village, one summer afternoon. So pretty unforgetable, I am too sad about his absence! May he make music in HEAVEN FOREVER!
Ok I have been a Prince fan for 43 years and This is the first time I have had the honor of hearing this. WOW. Yes. Yet another gift from his Majesty. This one is special though. I have been a professional musician for over 30 years and this is the first time I have ever 'jammed with Prince' my gawd I am having the time of my life. These pieces are bringing things out of me through my guitar that are beautiful. I am free! I think this came to me tonight because I am ready to have it. Again, thank you Prince.
I would say you have your fingertips on the pulse of the fact that the Man was not only an Iconic musician, but a teacher or should I say professor as well, and using this as a backing track was a great gift from Prince that he left behind for us. Thanks for having the good musical smarts to enlighten us. I just need to decipher the keys to play cross harp. Any help would be appreciated. ..will try the chromatic till then.
Hey Robert, Dig, you gotta check out N.E.W.S. by Prince if you have not already....I think it will stretch the limits of your creativity and your guitar strings as well. ..Nuthin but the best !!
I saw Prince live on several occasions. I have never seen anyone that so completely fulfilled their musical existence. He was born to be a conduit of music. About this Jam session: Usually I find that musicians that can perform on a higher level like this would not be interested in writing or performing pop music. Take for example someone like Buddy Rich who thumbed his nose at anything that wasn't Jazz. One of Prince's great strengths was to write great pop records (and do them well), but then in a live performance inject all kinds of elements into those songs that might otherwise become only re-performances of the record. He also seemed to know at which concert to turn-up the other elements (smaller venues, fan-based shows) and when to just "wow" with the hits. You also never seemed to get the same version of any song at a show, it was musically fresh and often better every time!
He loved Amsterdam and holland in general to play live , I saw him in Amsterdam promoting his first Album in the club called Jazz land for three dollars 18 years old in 1980 I was sold ,already had his album but from there I knew lovely person to what a ride .
I never saw Prince but I think there are a number of high level musicians who crossed over into the pop world and had hits. Like George Benson, Tom Browne, Patrice Rushen (who I saw recently in London) and others. It was a unique period in musical history.
sadly, back in oct.1981, nobody understood with Prince' open for the Rolling Stones .. we already knew back then that Prince was an amazing entertainer. He could sing he could shred the hell out of a guitar and he certainly could dance and he wrote some pretty amazing songs. He is gone way too soon. I’m 75 and I’m white and I think he was phenomenal.
Hey Anthony... I was at that Rolling Stones concert back in '81 with a bunch of people from high school. I was way up in the stands so I couldn't see it very well from where we were sitting. What was strange was that the music that Prince played was more similar to what was being played over the intercom while we were waiting for the bands to come on stage - only with Prince's music you could actually dance to it. One of the big deals back then was what he chose to wear (a speedo and a raincoat), but I'm sure there was a bit of racism too. I remember this being a time in our culture of the big divide between people who would admit that they liked disco - and those that chose rock in roll. Prince dared to combine them. I really would have liked to have seen Prince's set. But... wouldn't we all now! Such a crazy world this can be!
I don't own a single Prince record - my brother's the Prince fan - but I would have spent my paper route money on this if it has come out back then, bought the cassette through the record club, and the CD reissue!
The fact that this was BEFORE his first album shows u he was meant to do what he did. He was meant to become who he became. This sounds like a polished band not a jam session lead by a teenager.

I wish we had heard this music at the beginning of Prince's career, but it's pretty clear why we didn't if you put the time in context. Warner Bros. Records was signing this incredible musical prodigy to an unprecedented 3 album deal around this exact time and they wanted a "the new Stevie Wonder"-sized return on their investment. Releasing fusion-jazz-funk albums wasn't going to make that happen. So, this just went into the vault so Prince could focus on becoming a bankable soul-pop star. All of this notwithstanding, these recordings are a stunning insight into Prince's unassailable genius that was already fully-formed from the beginning. I truly want this material to be officially released. I'm dying to hear it in pristine sound quality on my home stereo.

He did this kind of stuff for his entire career. Madhouse, Xpectation, NPMGC soundchecks, N.E.W.S. Could have been a completely different type of artist if he'd chosen that path.

He sure dissapoints and very often too! Lets be honest! He is one of my biggest 5 idols in music! But he made a lot of crap too right?😂😂 Scandalous? You always in my hair? Heaven? Erotica city? GLAM Slam? Thieves in the Temple? Gold? Dolphin? Pussy control? Betchagonnawellowow? Sometimes it shows in April? Dinner with Dolores? Chelsea Rogers? Peach? Etc etc etc!😂😂😂😂😂😂 Billy Jack bitch? The pope? AND ALL HIS OTHER SHIT BALLADS I CANT REMEMBER!😂😂😂😂 but this kind of work is out of this world! Also his guitar play but not always! A true MOZART Who thaught that everything he made was excellent! Making ONE song a day is every 6 or 10 days a good song!❤❤❤❤ BUT besides that i have to admit that if you judge him in general, he controlled different styles and instruments and his knowledge of music in history and present is EXTRA ORDINARY! But he was a worthless dancer and when he sang high it was shit! Only Kiss was a good song whit his high voice and maybe the song ' most beautiful girl in the world' or "god"! Speaking about the dead nothing but good! BUT..........WE are all true fans right? So we know better than the rest! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
At that time, could You imagine a young Prince Roger Nelson hooking up with Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith,Herbie Hancock or even Earth Wind And Fire . Hearing this 1977 album makes sense to why Maurice White wanted Prince to join Earth Wind and Fire. He knew this young musician was a genius.
With all do respect Maurice White and Verdine White were actually assigned to Produce Prince's first album ...but Prince didn't want to go down that rabbit hole of top 40.. , Although He had much respect for Maurice and Verdine,Prince wanted to bring in control of his own ideas and creations... Sounds like he knew what was best for him!!! I find it so appreciative and grateful that we are blessed listen to his early pieces and appreciate the dedication and hard work and "Talent" the young prodigy sacrificed so we could have a like long catalog of compositions.

He was 19?! Are you effing KIDDING ME?! This would be amazing from a group of 30-somethings. For a trio of teenagers, it's, well, it's ri-freakin'-DIC-ulous! I'm a retired "semi-musician," turned HS college counselor. When I tell my HS students that I almost never listen to anything made in this millenium, they laugh at me (I'm 62 now, in 2021). But they don't know what they're missing by not listening to, much less playing, actual musical instruments. The worst thing we ever did as a society was take music out of the public school system...and it was no accident! Where will the "next Prince" come from if nobody plays instruments anymore?! It's a damn shame...
Actually, Prince didnt do much playing or composing in these sessions. He did in and out jamming on the synth. He was not well versed in guitar at the time so his riffs didn't fit. They were punched out and faded down.
The next Prince will have to seek out music on their own. Pester the shit out of their parents until they give in and buy an instrument, practice the instrument to the point of destruction, buy another instrument, luck into like-minded friends, etc. Signed, proud graduate of public school music programs AND a musically minded family.
How very well put. I haven't turned on a radio of my own volition in at least 22 years. Can't relate. But this here... Wow! Haven't felt this excited since they dug up the "Valleys of Neptune" project. Posthumous released music from guys like Prince and Hendricks always garner extra attention from me. I realize this won't happen forever and when the last track is played...
@@love4theworld826 I believe you are correct in your assessment-I remember during the Dirty Mind tour that Prince, on a video, shown on TV in early 1980, when taking guitar solos, always stayed in the shadows and as a result you couldn't really see him play-and I believe it was Dez Dickerson who was doing the real playing on those solos-why do I say this? Well-shortly before this video was shown on TV, I saw him live in Detroit in January of 1980, on tour with Rick James(Prince and his group "killed" it-they really proved to the public that were a group that was going to be around for some time to come-they really gave a great show and was FAR better than Rick James and his group, who I must admit, performance-wise, were disappointing to me, because I liked Rick James at that time-and still do!)-BUT-and here's MY POINT in all of this-THROUGHOUT their on-stage performance, PRINCE DID NOT TAKE ANY SOLOS-Dez did! But they were still a KICK-ASS group that I, like so many other people, became a fan of, especially after seeing they could "deliver the goods" in a live performance! My question also is-if what you say about Prince not composing these tunes is true-WHO then did compose these tunes? And if what you say is true about Prince not being "well versed" in guitar playing at that time(which I believe was true)-why was he promoted as a "guitar god" at that time, when clearly, he was not? And thank you for posting your observations about the matter in retrospect; you sound like someone who has an "insider's" knowledge about this matter... ALSO-as I'm typing these comments, I'm sitting here listening to these cats play with a level of skill, that I truly did not realize they possessed, or were capable of, going by the recordings they made at that time-especially Andre Cymone. His bass chops show that he had a prior background in jazz playing as well-and was an EXCEPTIONALLY skilled bass player-something that was never evident in any of his playing on any of the recordings/albums he made with Prince...very interesting...and it appears that many people aren't going to be inclined to agree with you, for what you've had to say about Prince, but from what I remember about Prince, what you've said seems to be the TRUTH...then let the truth be told-and the "chips" fall where they may... And thank you, for your apparently unbiased comments about Prince...perhaps others still who have knowledge about this matter, will "come forward" and confirm all of what you(and perhaps I also)have been saying. 7-29-22.
It's 2024. Im 47 y.o. and didn't think I could love Prince any more than I've been since the early- mid 80's.smh again 😮💜

@@selvamthiagarajan8152 comparing Ahmad Jamal & Prince is about like trying to say apples and oranges are similar!…..none of them are!
ok @@morrisparrish76
He did this kind of stuff for his entire career. Madhouse, Xpectation, NPMGC soundchecks, N.E.W.S. Could have been a completely different type of artist if he'd chosen that path.
Prince the real deal!
Diamonds & Pearls! ❤
Prince was one hell of a musician.
To the 193 that give this a thumbs down, get a life you soulless drongos. This is pure gold 😃 absolutely incredible. Get it out there on vinyl and CD
RIGHT ON my friend...indeed
Jealous. This is killer.
chill out dude, it was only UA-cam's dislike bots, no actual humans have disliked this other than a couple people with bad aim who missed the like button... I'd be honored if some Prince fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal UA-cam performances of PURPLE RAIN and DIAMONDS & PEARLS in tribute to the greatest songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist of all time. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and RESPECT to the genius of Prince.

Prince majesty as an almost unreal good pop music maker, singer, instrumentalist, arranger and producer.
Grandissimo Prince!!
From 1977 to eternity!. Thanks Prince.
Geniuses aren't born ....... they just, ARE .......
That’s fucking stupid, “genius.”
If they just ARE...that would mean they are born that way.
Are is now

Tomorrow comes
Idiot, genious?
Bliss?
@@tblack9711 yeah his statement doesn't make sense. Geniuses are born that way. What Prince and Michael had cannot be taught. This is not easy.
I've seen Prince 3 times in concert he played in one concert more than a dozen instruments, he was a genius, so sad that he is not alive anymore...but he has left his fantastic music for us to play forever, nice gift - Thank you PRINCE!!!
🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐…..in case you can’t dig it. Greatest Of All Times
Drum is unbeliveable.😱
I swear Prince never disappoints!!! His creativity and innovation is truly missed in the music industry💕
A kid having a dream writing a song at seven years old Called Funkmachine hmm, and this piece and all we know about him and now what his total capability was A Genius if he would lived 300 hundred years ago he would be a Mozart writing ,playing multiple instruments ,composing ,conducting ,performing, is a entertainment never happend in history . Rip my man .
I'm a big Prince fan. This has solidified after this. Pure genius.
BEST. MOST ADORED in body of WORK.
I liked him now i love him! Blows my mind

Rest in peace our dear sweet "PRINCE" Rogers Nelson of funk.. now you and the "KING" of Pop Michael Jackson, can look upon us from the universe and know your presence in the world of Music changed our lives.
He played all of the instruments in these productions. What an amazing dude!
Not in this case. Here he plays keys and guitar, but he indeed played all instruments on his first albums (and many others)
Just a genious
Fantastique !!! Top groovy, top funky.
Where has this been my whole life?
Amazing score !
Verrückt wie sich nach dem Tode von Prince fast endlos neue musikalische Schubladen öffnen. Was für ein rastloses Genie er doch war.
English translation:
Crazy how new musical boxes open almost endlessly after Prince's death. What a restless genius he was.
This is purple gold.
It will be great legacy of modern music history
As a former HS Band Director this comment speaks to my soul! This session tho #nastyface
this the grooviest Funky jazz I have listened to so far.. A very skilled and talented musician
