I'm only up to Illest of Our Time, have to go to bed, but don't want to forget. This is my first watch of your channel, and I'm intrigued. I'm not sure what you know of his background, but knowing that Ren is medically ill (and has been for a very long time) gives this whole song a double. One layer - especially in the first half - is braggadocious (being ill). Another layer - eespecially in the last half - is about being ill with no answers from doctors. I could be wrong, but the whole ending of this song guts me. I didn't see it on a first watch - probably because the video is quite visually stimulating, and Ren is much more clever than I am.
"I don't feel so fresh, my bro / Things get slurry, speaking slow / Head in Hong Kong, wonton soup / Is what I have for brains, I know" [Because of his brain damage, he has noodles for brains]
"That I want to spread these tattered wings, hold them high / Banished from the heavens but I'm knocking on the sky" [He's been through it, wants to feel better, to fly, but feels like he's close to death and thinks Heaven doesn't want him. This resonates to anyone who's suffered to the point of wanting life (God, their illness, karma, etc.) to kill them, and realizing the path ahead won't be the release of death, but more suffering and pain instead.]
"Living with depression is a blessing in disguise / Never second guessing, intuition getting wise / Want to sink into the pupil of my eye / Travel to the corner of my cornea and mind" [He's gotten wise about his life, and he finds himself in an impossible place - impossible because there are no corners in a sphere/cornea.]
"Look for all the answers that I never seem to find / Till then, I guess I'm still the illest of our time" [He keeps looking for answers or reasons behind his illness and suffering, but it doesn't work. He's still sick, and there's little hope that will change.]
So, yeah, to me it's quite sad. At the end, guessing that you're still the illest isn't braggadocious, but despairing.
Clever though. And I liked the Tyson-biting bars that few people seem to catch, which probably means I'm old, but I would think boxer Mike Tyson spitting part of Holyfield's ear to the floor would be infamous.
Oh, and an explanation that will help with lyrics: a council house or flat is British public housing. A council estate is a building complex containing a number of council houses and other amenities like schools and shops - like the US "projects" but more. So when Ren talks about "Music for the hooligans, let loose on the estate / Call the police and the riot vans, the people want to play, hey! / Freedom now, has lost all meaning, how / Can we all be free in a hierarchic breeding ground? / The poor get poorer while / The rich get rich in style / I'll be a heretic, kill a king, take his crown" you're right that he isn't criticizing capitalism directly, but it is implicit. There's a lot to unpack about needing to call the police because "hooligans" are walking around housing provided for low-income people. The video aids this verse as you see a contradicting Ren with two minds split between black and white. There's a rebellious/violent feel as well. A lot of possible interpretations - like anger at being labeled a troublemaker because you're poor.
I look forward to watching more later. ✌️

I’m a renegade. Ren tackles issues and topics many artists won’t. Those who are religious and cannot see the objective history of the global harm religion has enacted on the human condition is not a serious human being willing to discuss.

Thanks for this reaction stream! Great to hear a 10 song series of Ren, back to back. As a Ren fan, I can tell you, you've still only scratched the suface of his full range of talent. He's an accomplished guitarist, (acoustic, bass and electric) and pianist. He has a huge vocal range and uses different vocal styles and his storytelling is off the charts and is why some of his style is called Bardcore.
He has songs that deal with extremely difficult issues, many drawn from personal experience. He also has a lighter side with tracks he's written specifically with the watching reactor community in mind. He has collaborations with other artists and has a band "The BIg Push" with many live video performances (including a number of amazing street performances). He also has a lot more rap.
He also makes all his own beats (unless he namechecks via a retake acknowledgement), he beat boxes, he mixes and masters his own music.
I would definitely check out "The tales of Jenny & Screech", which are 3 songs you have to listen to back to back, and the Money Game series parts 1, 2 & 3.
You can safely play official versions of all his videos. His team lift any copyright issues as they actively encourage the reaction community.

Religion doesnt hold authority over morality dude. Morality comes from empathy, and its apologetic acrobatics to defend god's (highly questionable) morality throughout a book written by people who plagiarized from other lore/texts predating christianity, translated to a completely new text, then interpreted by people with confirmation biases to excuse who they choose to marginalize. Im just saying for ME, it's not a stable foundation from which to stand atop a soap box.

    • @supertuscans9512
      @supertuscans9512 12 днів тому

Well without God there is no Objective morality, it all becomes subjective. Many religions instill and advocate for morality but Christianity arguably does it to a greater degree than most other faiths.

@@VinAndSori Osiris, gilgamesh, horus, Minerva, and other lore have many parallels with the story of Jesus, yet all predate the bible. Furthermore, beyond plagiarism, such an important figure is executed and resurrects, yet somehow no one writes about it for 250 years. Commanding soldiers to commit genocide but keep the women and children for yourselves, not cool. But o WILL concede your point didn't necessarily entail this following debate. You hold your right to believe, I hold the right to believe that if most were only exposed to (most) religions as a intellectually competent adult, without indoctrination in more formative, malleable years, that far fewer would arrive at the conclusion to worship this God who has a track record of contradiction and hypocrisy, which is one easily understandable perspective given the right scriptures.

Enjoyed the evening and your input. I may be a Renegade, but can't speak for Ren, other than saying that he has said he has a turbulent relationship with his spirituality, it flows from nihilism to agnostic to something more spiritual, and back again. Just completed an interview with Knox Hill touching on many of the social consciousness he operates by.

I know people who are on meds for a number of things. In each case they truly need them to survive....but also in each case their personalities have changed. One fella went from the sweetest nature to being ready for an argument on everything, that was down to Fentanyl for pain relief. Another who was very funny and witty went to being very average mind on meds for Bipolar problems. They need these drugs and I still love them dearly but it's a shame it comes with that price. I'm not a doctor and this is purely anecdotal and might mean nothing in the larger scale of things.

Ren write Masochist a while back, it's one of his most recent ones, but he sat on it for a good while. And he gives the answer in the song "kill this metaphors I write to all attachments in this life". He was in a bad place, he was paranoid and he was psychotic. But most of all he wanted to get away from himself (mostly his own body) and start over. Also the song is called masochist because he knows killing this attachments will cause him even more pain.
You were quite accurate in your breakdown.

Just a heads up, if any Ren video gets a strike or a claim against it, appeal it. It's not Ren, he wants reactors to play his stuff and wants them to earn doing it. There are fake accounts out there that try and claim his music (some other reactors have mentioned this before), presuming most people won't challenge it. Some of the hardcore Ren fans can probably put you in touch with his management team who will whitelist you.
Anyhow, enjoyed watching this, thx 👍🏻

My favourites didn't seem to make this list but that just means you have a lot of great music left to enjoy. I hope you do because there cover haunting, naughty, funny, emotional, and some are just a bit weird. Some I like better than others but they're all good.

❤Ren doesn't put out his full personal beliefs in a way that influence someone elses for better or worse ut he does put out his own experiences and many people take them in different ways Ren has always said that he wants ppl to be able to interpret his music as it relates to them there is no one specific meaning. Also ppl a lot get this wrong when saying Ren is an agnostic. At the end of his story Garden of Eden, he says "I am an agnostic who believes " he is an agnostic theist and he believes very strongly but also knows that there is no way for humans to prove he exists or that the human brain can not even comprehend the understanding of what that is.

That's just not true in the slightest. The idea of a "god" or creator should still be taken seriously just as much as random evolution as both are just as plausible in the end. What is truly dumb is anyone claiming to know the truth and believing what people from thousands of years ago wrote on scrolls. Religion is the scourge of the earth, the idea of a creator should be considered by everyone. Keep in a mind a creator could be some programmer that made our universe in a simulation, or some magical entity with the ability to shape and create matter.
