I just finished the book Stealing Like an Artist and I absolutely loved it. I used to hate using references or anything that weren’t mine. I can already see a change in my art
I always find a way to get better loll. If someone says I improve on one part, ILL DO IT!!! No matter how right or wrong they are, Ill practice none the less :P Gahh I hated refrences too. But I did grow out of it. As you can see,I traced stuff when I was like 3 and then I grew to hate refrences and yea. I DUNNO HOW I ASSOCIATED TRACING AND REFRENCINGG
See, this is what we call "taking a reference" And its something artist do as often as we breath. Calling it "stealing" isn't good. People on tumblr already call out unknown and beginning artist for "pose stealing" like that's a real thing, or "color pallet stealing" like people have a copyright on color. Referring to using a reference as "stealing" is not something you want to spread to anyone. Young artist are probably already scared enough that they will be criticized for using any type of help so labeling using a reference as stealing will only fuel the fire that toxic people will use against artist.
Tiku Noka bless your soul! Nowadays people confuse art theft with other things. And actually, Tracing isn’t art theft. You still should add your own style to it. The real art thefts are the ones that take a the actual original picture and re-upload it just to claim it. Not artists that actually TRY to improve.
Important Tip: *NEVER* hesitate to use references. Unless you have photographic memory, really skilled, or something else, taking references will help SO much with buildings, poses, etc.

Hey LavenderTowne! I'm a new viewer, and I just wanted to thank you so much. You've inspired me to draw again in a time that's been absoutly horrible. I've been having a really hard month, and to make it worse I've had a major art block...so I just want to say thank you for bringing me new inspiration and life into my art. Having inspiration again had honestly saved my life in a way❤️❤️❤️ you're so sweet and you give lots of people inspiration 😊😊😊
The tips are actually really useful! I don't have any figurines i could use (and there's no way I can buy them), but I do have sims 4 haha. I've never thought about using sims that way! Thank you!
i love the use of Sims, its so much fun and i want to use it to create consistent buildings for comics one day. But i am art noob, le sigh. Also for ideas on what viewers like watching from you, i'd say i really love your character designs based off different things like the consoles for instance and the By The Book series is so satisfying. Your tutorials and tips are super helpful for me and friends too and my absolute favorite of your videos are definitely the Creepypastas. This is because in these you draw full art with characters and backgrounds like illustrating the story similar to a book or comic, and it makes the story telling very engaging to me. yur an amazing artist and generally great person, can't wait to see your next vid~!
This is literally EXACTLY how I draw the book covers for my books that most of my ocs are in! I find a reference photo and sketch over it and then make everything my own style since its hard for my to draw poses from scratch digitally!
The sims tip was a really good tip but something I’ve realised because of getting into 3D modelling is that you can use blender or something like that using assets or making your own.
maybe it's one of those where they make it look like both handles are one and the same but they are separate. except in this case they are not separate cuz idk maybe it was an oversight???
O MY GOODNESS my life would have been sooo much better if I knew this years ago when I first start doing art. I didn't learn this in art school. Even still better late then never. This is an awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
if you are drawing on a computer, i'd reccomend firealpaca. (its free and can be used for mac and windows) if you are not, i'd try to find a sale for sketchbooks. (michaels has a lot of sales, if you have one near you!) you can make good art with cheap supplies! crayola colored pencils work great! i'd try to stay away from crayons, they get chalky if you layer them too much. for 'fancier' supplies i use a japanese site called jetpens. some of their stuff is a little more expensive but not too much. they have really good liners, pencils, and erasers! :) good luck!!
I reccomand buying a very cheap drawing tablet(Lavender actually made a video on this, some tablet cost just 20$!) or learn to draw with a mouse(I've been drawing with it for about 7 years now and it's really not that hard!), use some good, free programs like MediBang(i recommand this one especially, it's neat and it has a stabilizator that works even for mouse users!) or Fire Alpaca. If you'd rather go traditionally tho, I reccomand either look very carefully and a lot around - for example, I bought a really nice and high quality watercolor paper for less than 5$ once! There always can be a sale in more proffessional shops, you can get good art supplies cheaper on the internet, or find good quality supplies in stores that aren't even art stores. OR you can just plan out your budget for art supplies and buy just a few a month or so. Of course at first it's going to be annoying that you don't have much to work with, but trust me, you can do good stuff with really just a few little things. So some patience and it'll be all cool. I know I'm not LavendeTowne, but I hope I could help just a little!
Lilly Hernandez I have a nice drawing tablet that I got off of amazon for about 20 bucks Lavendertowne reviewed a good one about the same price too. Mine is an Ugee she might have reviewed it but I dunno. You can use fire alpaca and medibang paint pro. I got them both by just looking them up on google. Btw dont look up pro just Medibang and you'll find it for free (just incase look up Medibang free)
there's a book on this very subject in case you wanna learn more!! it's called "steal like an artist: 10 things nobody told you about being creative" by austin kleon, and he goes into depth with pictures, charts, word play, and quotes to back himself up. i read it this year and it's one of the best books i've ever read!!
As a young artist I’ve always been super sensitive to using other sources to help me draw. I always thought that it would be considered “unoriginal” if the things that I drew didn’t fully come from my head. Thank you so much for this, it has surely made me less insecure about using outside sources. I’ll definitely be trying this out! You’re such an inspiration, I hope you continue to make more great videos, you have my support :) (Edit: sorry if this was a bit long for a comment, heh)
I have to say, these are some of the first useful art tips for not completely blatantly ripping off other people's art shamelessly that I've seen on youtube. These are truly helpful and respectable tips as one should approach a reference. Thank you for the helpful advice and pro tips. I've learned so much from this one video than dozens of similar other "art hacks" videos!
For anyone that prefers traditional art/ doesnt use drawing tablets there are some substitutes for the tips that Haley recommended! Instead of tracing the picture, use any old barbie, cheap action figure, etc and taking pictures with your phone, tablet, etc then use them as a reference later. Instead of tracing a room from the sims, I just googled 'houses for sale' and looked around a few websites until i was able to find something that would work. If you're looking for an outdoor scenery just simply google whatever type of scenery you wish. ( Waterfall, forest, beach, etc ) Then; (like Haley mentioned ) using any catalogs ( Forever 21, JCPenney, any clothing store really ) pick an outfit you think will fit the character you plan on designing. I hope this was any help!
you can't really steal a pose :P i hate it when people say this Edit: what i MEANT is that the idea of stealing a pose is dumb. you can't copy right a pose.
@@talkizawa52 no he is not telling she steal a pose, but he wants to tell that people who says "you steal a pose" is wrong because pose can't be copyrighted..
@@MidianPOfficialytch i think he is trying to says that if a person telling you "you can't steal other people pose" it's wrong.. because pose can't be copyrighted.
also specifically for head posing, you can use your own head by placing a mirror by your monitor/piece of paper so that you can have a live reference, works good for expressions too
Animators back in the day used that as well. After all, the goal of cartoons weren't to completely erase human characteristics but to exaggerate and accentuate them.
That was a VERY good idea I've never thought of and I'm so glad I have the sims 4 from my time face (Its still going on) I would have never thought of this thanks so much I really appreciate this Help you gave out. Now my comic can have better In house backgrounds all I need to work on is outside backggrounds!!!
thankyou sooooo much lavendertowne! youve helped me alot with my drawing skills :) and to all those peeps who say that this is "tracing" you have probably not have used this useful trick just try it it might change your opinion :> anyways keep up the great work lavendertowne!
For the Sims hack, there is also a free way to make rooms/houses to use as references!! It’s a free site called *Roomsketcher* , and they have a HUGE selection of furniture and other stuff you can use to make floor plans/home designs Hope this gets some attention, it’s helped me and countless other artists out a lot when it comes to background stuff (^-^)
I dont really see this as stealing. It seems more like gaining inspiration from other things. It's like drawing a single apple on a stool and saying you're stealing the idea of the apple on the stool by painting it.
Another tip for posing is using a old monster high doll it has a bit more realistic proportions but it still works well (old ones because they have joints to them unlike the new ones)
Also, can you please give some advice on what to do if you can't think of a design for a character or are not happy with a characters design? I'm wanting to work on a graphic novel series and I'm not very satisfied with any of the design ideas for my witch character.
What I would do is create the character based on the story and personality. Based on the personality you chose, that's how they'll look. Based on the setting and time, that's how they look. It helps. I also try referencing other characters who have a similar personality
Easy. Who IS your character? Start with their backstory, personality, where they live. Make their appearance fit that. If they live in a cold climate, it would be stupid to put them in shorts unless there's a reason for it (example: Sans and Papyrus from Undertale both wear shorts, and live in a snowy climate. They're also skeletons who don't feel the cold). Vice versa. Remember, making a character look "cool" is really the least important thing. What's important is making them realistic, making them fit into their world. She's a witch? Make her look like a convincing witch. Doesn't have to be stereotypical; maybe she carries a little satchel with potion ingredients. Maybe she has a pentagram necklace for spells. Think about what she does, what she needs to accomplish that, and get creative.
If you can't come up with a design, I suggest taking a look at at least 5 diff characters that your character sorta feels like or you want to feel like. Then pick out a few things about their design that you like or you think would suit your character and then put them together in a way that makes the design coherent and fluid. It's also a similar case with improving a character design. Break the character apart and sift through the pieces. What doesn't feel right, what isn't realistic or practical for your character to have, and what you just plain don't like about them. Take those bits out. THEN do like I said earlier when coming up with a design. But if you really don't like it overall, as in, more than a half of the design needs changing, just scrap it and start over. Trust me. If something doesn't work, it's only harder if you try to force pieces to fit together. Much easier to start fresh. But starting fresh also doesn't mean that you have to throw away the stuff you liked about the old design. Keep it, and try to put a new spin on it if you can. If it still doesn't feel right, start over again and again until your character feels right
There’s a webtoon called Lookism where every character is inspired by a real person (in appearance) but stylised to match the comic. That’s a cool way to do it.
Your tips on using the sims for a background perspective is ingenious. I have difficulty in gauging the perspectives of a background so this idea will really help. Your other figure idea is great too, it's a useful tool to use to see a real life figure model so that you can learn from and study from different angles. I've learned a lot watching this video and thank you for sharing your advice. 😄
Wahhh such a helpful video!!! I'm very happy I found your channel recently, it's been nothing but extremely informative and I've learned SO much already Thank you! I'm glad to know I can use Sims for backgrounds now because that's always been one of my concerns if I were to ever do a comic 😅
You can still do the tips as long as you have a picture actually it can help you improve on real measurements of objects in the picture since you'd start paying mlre attention to it as well!
Those are some of the most innovative tips I've seen on the internet. You are going to improve my drawings so much, I think I'm gonna end up watching every video on your channel because so far you've given me so much insight!

I've been having a really hard month, and to make it worse I've had a major art block...so I just want to say thank you for bringing me new inspiration and life into my art. Having inspiration again had honestly saved my life in a way❤️❤️❤️ you're so sweet and you give lots of people inspiration 😊😊😊
i got chills when i saw the madoka and homura figurines

am I the only one hearing a weird ghost sound or is there a demonic presence in my room at 12 am?
Why did I click on this when it's midnight
Well looks like you should find some sage...
Jk I heard it too
Omg it's actually 12:26 am fuck, and yeah I actually felt a breeze wtf
I don't hear anything
Oh noe
Gotta love using them anime figures
I swear their only for drawing purposes
I need to get one >_
I have never watched anime yet I really want one
The tips are actually really useful! I don't have any figurines i could use (and there's no way I can buy them), but I do have sims 4 haha. I've never thought about using sims that way! Thank you!
oh darn
You could use barbies to use as models :3
dude i'm like 15 I don't have any barbies lmao but thanks haha.
oh darn
Just use some old dolls
I don't have any toys lmao. I think i'm just gonna google anime figurines and use the poses from there haha..
oh darn
Oh dang

i love the use of Sims, its so much fun and i want to use it to create consistent buildings for comics one day.
If you drew your profile, your better than me TΠT
This is literally EXACTLY how I draw the book covers for my books that most of my ocs are in! I find a reference photo and sketch over it and then make everything my own style since its hard for my to draw poses from scratch digitally!
The sims tip was a really good tip but something I’ve realised because of getting into 3D modelling is that you can use blender or something like that using assets or making your own.
Someone stole my art on PopJam a minute ago lol
But yes your 'good art stealing' is true UwU
Lovely video and art, as usual!!
lawl I play popjam
Ah that sucks! I use popjam as well. I'm @Sansational.
Cool. I'll follow you, I'm @Undefinitely
I'm not that active anymore, but I do the occasional DC entry, poll, contest or update.

Ooo on Popjam I'm @kitty1903
4:44 HOW DOES THAT FRIDGE EVEN WORK??????????? I’m so confused.
It could probably open up the freezer and fridge at the same time
Octey Cartoons yeah that too
I KNOW
I was looking for this comment😂
maybe it's one of those where they make it look like both handles are one and the same but they are separate. except in this case they are not separate cuz idk maybe it was an oversight???
O MY GOODNESS my life would have been sooo much better if I knew this years ago when I first start doing art. I didn't learn this in art school. Even still better late then never. This is an awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
I love watching your videos, even though I don't draw often. What are some ways to draw/color on a budget?
Lilly Hernandez IbisPaint X is a good free system
if you are drawing on a computer, i'd reccomend firealpaca. (its free and can be used for mac and windows)
if you are not, i'd try to find a sale for sketchbooks. (michaels has a lot of sales, if you have one near you!)
you can make good art with cheap supplies! crayola colored pencils work great! i'd try to stay away from crayons, they get chalky if you layer them too much. for 'fancier' supplies i use a japanese site called jetpens. some of their stuff is a little more expensive but not too much. they have really good liners, pencils, and erasers! :)
good luck!!
Microsoft paint and mouse
Lilly Hernandez
I have a nice drawing tablet that I got off of amazon for about 20 bucks Lavendertowne reviewed a good one about the same price too.
I stole my best friend's art styles. All of them. NO EXCEPTIONS. THEY'RE ALL ENFUSED INTO MY ARM DUE TO HER INFLUENCE.
For a reference pose, ill use my Made to Move barbie, It moves very fluidly, and i love it! Lol
I love the ominus sound effect for the blank drawing doll haha
SOMEONE:NOW IMMA BE A TRACER

As a young artist I’ve always been super sensitive to using other sources to help me draw. I always thought that it would be considered “unoriginal” if the things that I drew didn’t fully come from my head. Thank you so much for this, it has surely made me less insecure about using outside sources. I’ll definitely be trying this out! You’re such an inspiration, I hope you continue to make more great videos, you have my support :)
(Edit: sorry if this was a bit long for a comment, heh)
I have to say, these are some of the first useful art tips for not completely blatantly ripping off other people's art shamelessly that I've seen on youtube. These are truly helpful and respectable tips as one should approach a reference. Thank you for the helpful advice and pro tips. I've learned so much from this one video than dozens of similar other "art hacks" videos!
I have a video Idea, since you have the Sims, do you have Cats and dogs? If so, you can Paint on your pets, maybe a fun challenge?
Using the app/game love nikki also really helps with creating oc designs if youre feeling uncreative.
Nomenro that’s what I did for one of my more recent ocs!
( Waterfall, forest, beach, etc )
Then; (like Haley mentioned ) using any catalogs ( Forever 21, JCPenney, any clothing store really ) pick an outfit you think will fit the character you plan on designing.
I hope this was any help!
A really good substitute for pose dolls are Made to Move Barbies because they're much more flexible and I think they're cheaper.
I definitely need this
I always stick around for the patrons to hear le bleh bleh bleh’s name 😌
Sun :3 honestly same
you can't really steal a pose :P i hate it when people say this
Edit: what i MEANT is that the idea of stealing a pose is dumb. you can't copy right a pose.
IKR
She’s not really stealing it, she’s just referencing it.
so is walking, sleeping, eating and hobby considered stealing?
then i could charge people for violation when they steal my "ORIGINAL" pose. JK
@@talkizawa52 no he is not telling she steal a pose, but he wants to tell that people who says "you steal a pose" is wrong because pose can't be copyrighted..
@@MidianPOfficialytch i think he is trying to says that if a person telling you "you can't steal other people pose" it's wrong.. because pose can't be copyrighted.
follow my moves, *SNEAK* around.. careful not to make a sound...
_DON’T TOUCH THAT_
Let's try something else
5656Dana we are number one
5656Dana You have committed crimes against Skyrim and her people, what say in your defense?!
How would someone open one door on that fridge wtf💀
You open both at once.
Those exist, look exactly like that and are so flipping annoying
KamiEssential hmm idk, maybe *OPEN* the door? Ik, sooooo hard to know
Imagine those large one door fridges with a little freezer compartment inside, but much less technologically advanced
This video was so creative! Amazing job, Lavender!
It’s not stealing its references and inspiration i think
kiwi
No it doesn’t
kiwi well yeah
kiwi what if we're stealing something that was stolen
it is referencing.
TealSeal5683 it might be a reference to the quote "good artists copy; great artists steal"
This made me draw alot better thanks for the SnEaKy tips and tricks
How da fridge handle work?
I. Acrylic I'm not sure
I. Acrylic omg you're right
You pull it.
Just Ronjay me x victor
Just Ronjay there's two sections and one handlw
also specifically for head posing, you can use your own head by placing a mirror by your monitor/piece of paper so that you can have a live reference, works good for expressions too
Animators back in the day used that as well. After all, the goal of cartoons weren't to completely erase human characteristics but to exaggerate and accentuate them.
This is amazing, you changed my whole idea about drawing honestly!! Im so excited to try out this trick and i hope it works for me!! Thankyou so much🥰
That was a VERY good idea I've never thought of and I'm so glad I have the sims 4 from my time face (Its still going on) I would have never thought of this thanks so much I really appreciate this Help you gave out. Now my comic can have better In house backgrounds all I need to work on is outside backggrounds!!!
Do you know what I noticed?
All your characters (especially the characters from Unfamiliar) completely pass the silhouette test!
Kiera Vermeal definitely!
tf is the silhouette test
Eve When you black out a character to form a silhouette and see if it's recognizable. You can search it up for more information.
Actually i learnt how to draw realistically before i mastered cartoon art
Thats the better way to learn cartoons art, even disney artists were trained to practice real animal anatomy for cartoons like Bambi and Lion King.
Yea you should always learn realism before cartoon, it will be make anatomy and other things much easier to do.
@@melfy3380 huh
That's a better way to do it
Oof! I started like that too XD
The Madoka figurines..
Using the sims is such a great idea!! Thank you so much. I’m going to try this :) I’ll make sure to tag you on twitter !!! 💗
thankyou sooooo much lavendertowne!
youve helped me alot with my drawing skills :)
and to all those peeps who say that this is "tracing"
you have probably not have used this useful trick
just try it it might change your opinion :>
anyways keep up the great work lavendertowne!
For the Sims hack, there is also a free way to make rooms/houses to use as references!!
It’s a free site called *Roomsketcher* , and they have a HUGE selection of furniture and other stuff you can use to make floor plans/home designs
Hope this gets some attention, it’s helped me and countless other artists out a lot when it comes to background stuff (^-^)
but all i have is chibi hetalia figurines 😭
i dont..understand?? why did i get even one like?? i was just complaining that i didnt have bigger, more anatomically correct figurines????
@@peachymomo2665 *HMMMMMMMM*
YoBoi I DONT UNDERSTAND
I dont have any figurines
I have.... Lego people and stuffed animals... At least you can draw chibi characters?
The finish turned out amazing:0
I dont really see this as stealing. It seems more like gaining inspiration from other things. It's like drawing a single apple on a stool and saying you're stealing the idea of the apple on the stool by painting it.
TheLarryestOf Hall that's the point
Sneak-100
Another tip for posing is using a old monster high doll it has a bit more realistic proportions but it still works well (old ones because they have joints to them unlike the new ones)
This really helped because I'm not particularly good at drawing backgrounds or poses, thank you😄
Also, can you please give some advice on what to do if you can't think of a design for a character or are not happy with a characters design? I'm wanting to work on a graphic novel series and I'm not very satisfied with any of the design ideas for my witch character.
go to fashion websites, get inspo from the random stuff they might sell, or watch anime and take tips from that too, with the character designing.

I'm very happy I found your channel recently, it's been nothing but extremely informative and I've learned SO much already
Thank you! I'm glad to know I can use Sims for backgrounds now because that's always been one of my concerns if I were to ever do a comic 😅
"I'm just going to add a piece of toast to make the imagine more *cute and fun*
Nah, nah... *more anime* .
People where asking me why I needed a reference picture and did I give credit to the reference
You don't need to credit references fam
Powowbunny B00 I’ll make sure to tell them that
You can also use the sims for some poses! Had my sims read a book and it helped me draw my character working on a painting.
Here's the problem:
... I don't draw digitally
You can still do the tips as long as you have a picture actually it can help you improve on real measurements of objects in the picture since you'd start paying mlre attention to it as well!
Print screenshot and use a lightbox to sketch backdrop outlines onto paper?
You can use tracing paper right over the computer screen like me! :D
Sailor Moon , and then you changed it to ELMO

Yeah I get the point. But I just _don't care_
Those are some of the most innovative tips I've seen on the internet. You are going to improve my drawings so much, I think I'm gonna end up watching every video on your channel because so far you've given me so much insight!
This made me laugh cause I used my mini statue of David for reference on a boy characters muscles recently hahaha, nice video as always
'Hey guys I recently stole pallets!'
*friends turn around*
'what?'
Friends- "I don't think you can steal pallets..." XD:::::
There are apps that will give you a figure to pose and get angles of as well.
