I feel truly bad that younger generations didn’t experience the freedom and optimism of the 80’s and much of the 90’s. There were major social problems, many of which I’m grateful we’ve made significant progress on. But for a kid living in a relatively peaceful area, it was a great time to grow up. Lots of space to adventure and create, as well as hours and hours of bonding with friends and sometimes getting into a little trouble. I’m sure people still have experiences like that, but they seem rarer, and kids feel a lot more burdened. I hope we are able to re-integrate some of the positive elements of my childhood and adolescence into our more connected modern world.
i hope so too. i would've loved to experience the 90's, but unfortunately i grew up in the 2010's (which was still kind of a good time period to be a kid in my opinion but still, i wish i was a millennial at times too ._,) PS - my oldest half brother grew up in the mid-late 2000's (he's an older gen z, kinda close to a millennial) so i grew up with some things that millennials might have had as kids (such as a nintendo ds, i would play nintendogs on there so much lol)

I love to see your take on the forgotten gen (gen before boomers) as they were dealing with the world wars and its not very well known but they had a VERY similar sense of humour to gen z and were just trying to make the most of a bad situation.
Boomers be like: “you either die a hero or live long enough to be the villain” Gen Z and the millennials came in like: “with the world and the mental health we have, definitely not living long”
Gen z is the dumbest generation tbh. Not lewronggeneration-ing, But it’s mostly just idiotic liberals who think that being an e-girl and self-diagnosing is cute and different, While all looking like carbon copies of eachother :( Most alt or egirls who are gen z that I’ve seen are ugly and pretentious. LavenderTowne makes Gen Z so cute, But in reality it’s the ugliest, Dumbest, Not to mention fattest generation.
it’s so fun watching this and seeing masterpieces being formed infront of me, then being able to listen to LavenderTowne describe my generation perfectly idk why but it’s just really funny to me 😭😭
I think there's a few reasons for that: 1. Around the time they were becoming parents, there was an economic prosperity they got to enjoy along with gen X, and since it came with their coming of age, I think many associated their own hard work with that prosperity, and so they think millenials and gen Zs are just lazy if the world around them is collapsing and they can't fix that. 2. While there were definitely many protests for civil rights during the boomer era, the same issues of systematic racism and classism remained. A lot of white baby boomers never interacted with a black person in their life, and that applies to other minorities. The rich live in rich neighborhoods, mixed communities are an infrequent occurrence nowadays too, and that means these people never really got an outside perspective. The age of the internet allows us to interact with people from different races, religions, ethnicities and sexuality, and the anonymity of the internet also helps a lot of LGBT folk be public about their sexuality. 3. This one is more of a hunch based on personal experience and kinda relates to my previous point: not all boomers went around protesting, a lot of them enjoyed their privileges and never questioned the racial prejudice they were taught from young age, so to them the ones protesting were barbaric and violent because they didn't see why they were protesting in the first place. That's the case with my gen X (close to millennial) parents talking about the BLM protests going on. There's probably other factors, but that should roughly explain it.
One time my little sister said “Okay boomer” to me. If I remember correctly we were talking about the TikTok app. She’s three years younger than me. I’m not gonna put our ages because of privacy reasons.
A "young" Gen-X'er here. Meaning my teen years were during the nineties when Gen-X's mood went from manic to depressive. No wonder the 90s saw a high water mark for the Goth subculture (and yes, we could have a long TEDIOUS debate on the difference between Goth and Emo). Interesting thing is that the things that were around in MY childhood seem to have formed the foundation for North American pop culture going forward. Transformers? Still around. My Little Pony? Still around. I was born in the same year the first Star Wars movie came out. He-Man and She-Ra? Getting revivals on Netflix.
YES! I'm Gen-X as well, and it was an...interesting time. For example, people think of the '80s, they think "Colors! Video games! Legwarmers! BIG HAIR!" and yes, those things were there...but the Cold War was still going on, and in many cases that meant we were blasting super-cheerful music to NOT THINK ABOUT THAT. The '80s are one of those really cognitive dissonance decades--I mean, the song "99 Luftballoons" alone. It's an insanely catchy, happy-sounding song ABOUT nuclear war! Then the '90s and everything went both grunge and flannel but somehow also neon and Spice Girls at the same time, attitudes were cheerier than today but pop music started getting really depressing lyrics-wise, in many cases, and we were doing the Macarena at the same time as the cool kids in your class might have--gasp!--a CELL PHONE! Because yeah, us Xers are also from a transitional era for technology, same as Milennials--the younger of us, at least, TOTALLY grew up in a time where the beginnings of modern computer technology were (sometimes) all around us, but we ALSO did a lot of "go play outside!" We literally grew up alongside computers. I can remember roughly what age I was when I first heard about/used things that we use all the time now--like I learned BASIC in elementary school. Suddenly one day, when I was 13?, the school computers had this thing called a "word processor" with a "spell check". I drew my first digital pictures using the embryonic version of Microsoft Paint (it was called DrawPerfect at the time!), and my gaming systems went from an Atari 2600 to an NES to a Sega Genesis to a Playstation (well technically, the playstation was my brother's. He's an ALMOST-Milennial.) And yet, we also were possibly the last generation to truly have the wild rogue-kid freedom of just running around all day with NO way to contact your parents in your pocket at all times, climbing on things we shouldn't climb on and hanging upside down from the jungle gym without anybody having a heart attack. This of course wasn't smart, but we also had the luxury of not constantly worrying about getting SHOT at school! No, just the ordinary mean-girl/bullying stuff... Anyway, I hope you enjoyed (or at least could tolerate :P) my Ted Ramble. Cheers, from a late-1974 kid with an actual My Little Pony and Rubik's Cube on her desk, right now. Because yes. :)
As you get older, remember that even the Boomers started off as hippies and socially progressives for their time. Now we tease them for being socially conservative. Let it be a lesson of how important it is to self-evaluate, stay educated and listen to new POVs all throughout your life. And also to be a little more patient when dealing with older generations who haven't caught up with new times.
“I used to be with it, but then they changed what *it* was. Now what I'm with isn't *it*, and what's *it* seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to youuuuu”
nope. they were born in a different time when slavery was newly disestablished. lol. as you grow old you are supposed to go to left because you start to become sympathetic towards others not go conservative.
No, it's because all those hippies and protesters and revolutionaries like the Black Panthers were basically murdered. During the 80's the FBI collaborated with drug lords in poor/working neighborhoods to deminish the capacities of revolutionaries. For example, in Spain, heroine went "casually" rampant on revolutionary niches, while at the same time, making a bastard and dull version of protest culture called "La Movida Madrileña", so young people could get cringed and if joining only the surface level. Simmilar things have been done in every Liberal country, specially since the USSR collapsed.
Thanks. That last bit will be especially hard for me, though, in spite of my age (straddling Boomers and Gen X). I'm just as fed up with the old cranks now as I was 35 years ago!
I love this, my daughter (a Z) showed me this. As an X, I will say one thing about your characters that was captured well, Xer had the most clothes and the least fashionably sexualized. Our times were a rebellion against the mid-70s flamboyance, so plain was the vibe. Also growing up when AIDS was thought of as a very long and slow, awful death sentence, and high schoolers were getting it (this was long before the treatments we have today) it really kinda cut down on the “free love” of the boomers, or the “hookup culture” that came later…. We were… Boring in that regard… really boring…
I feel the same way. My great grandma is still alive and she's from the silent generation. Their outlook on the world is so different than mine its wild.
The silent gen is inspirational, they lived during a horrible time, and the one who are alive you can see hold good jobs, they're proof we can get out of anything.
7:52 i wish it wasnt like this. I always get so scared going to the store or nervous when a dude passes when in reality they arent even doing anything just going and doin their own thing but i my mind all i can think of is the horrible things...😔
I once laughed so hard that I collapsed to the floor in tears. Wanna know what I laughed at? *A goddamn motion blurred picture of a chair with the words "be not afraid" as the caption.*
I remember laughing really hard at a video that started off with the comic about the dad ignoring the son and then trying to connect with him later then ended with the dancing autotuned cockroach. Don't ignore your kids or else they'll turn into dancing autotuned cockroaches 😔
@Ape Say that again? I wish I had your point of view. I'm gen z and a lot of people in this generation I know are dreading their inevitable death. As am I. Please get whoever you know educated, or if they're on the way younger side of gen z, it'll come with time
I think millennials and Gen z relate to each other a lot more than previous generations as we were brought up in such similar situations while other gens seemed to hold disdain for the younger gens.
My 10 year older sister is a Millennial and I always looked up to her, when she was in her emo phase I wanted to be like her, I still want to be like how she was, I imagined my young adulthood very 2000s like and I am very disappointed. I am now swimming in old trash in desperation to capture the 2000s feel
I'm a millennial and sometimes I can barely tell the difference. when I was in college all me and my friends did was joke about having mental illness and wanting to drop out.
The older gens still hold the athoritarian parenting beliefs and they see the world differently. Millennials were the ones who realized it's bad and they're also using technology a lot.
As a millennial myself i can tell you it was great to grow up without tech and internet. So in my experience millennials are cautions and careful using new tech. while my younger siblings grow up with smartphones seems not have a problem and also with giving away their data to the corporation. But i like the energie and revolt around the younger folks, while my generation already gave up on changing the world for the better
Yeah that's the difference lol. Millennials still weren't allowed to express that they had mental health issues. We were isolated and ostracized and internalized a lot of those feelings and blamed ourselves. While we were working to spread awareness of mental health, all the psa's were dark, grim warnings that your kid was going to kill themselves. It was all gloomy desperate "please just listen to us" type stuff. Now there's tiktok lmao. I'm 26 and my baby sister is 18. It's so funny how differently we express ourselves. Shell just pop up a peace sign and be like I wannnna die today😜 and I'm still like, if I say it I mean it and you should definitely call someone. I kinda like gen z's way better though. Yes, we had to be serious about it because we had to lay that groundwork, but gen z built themselves such a supportive and nihilistically light-hearted community. Forever impressed by how easily you guys can express yourselves and find support.
@@gakailyn9249 it's also our coping mechanism. We find comfort in humor and try to deflect support to a degree. We have more freedom with emotions because of you guys, but it's also much harder for us to actually get help because we see our problems as not as bad as everyone else.
I couldn't stop thinking about that! Like it's so weird to think that boomers were so openminded and socially active and now they have the opposite reputation...makes me scared of getting old lol I don't want to become close minded. ; - ;
@@LavenderTowne its natural for that type of mindset to slowly manifest as we get older because we generally dont like change. We like to stay in comfort. So when things change and the people around you seem to change mindsets, cultures, or ideologys, you become more uncomfortable and start to dislike the change. This can be avoided by being more openminded and accepting that things change, and that nothing stays the same forever. or more broadly "the future is now old man."
I think you should've added the memes and lgbtq on the gen z because I think we are the first generation that mostly accepts that and approximately 48% of us identify as part of that community
Could be anything from your archetypal 1950s-early 1960s aesthetic (probably not always as high-class as what film stars wore) as depicted in shows like Mad Men, to Greaser and Beatnik subcultures. Plus protest signage and coats for those who gave the civil rights movement momentum, since MLK himself and many other movement figureheads were from this generation.
Well basically, I remember my grandma (I think she's born around 1930..?) telling me about how she first bought and wore a pair of pants, and her friend's mother was scandalized and scolded her about what was acceptable and what was not 😅
Silent and Greatest? Well, Greatest/buliders is easy. As a military person, WWII army is what they identify as. A sniper with a rifle, pilot or doctor if you're going for a female. Wearing a worn out blood stained uniform and boots, having their hair braided up with ribbons and pinned under their military cap, carrying a weapon. They went through hell basically, and their culture was all about keeping hope and persistence, that it's going to end well. ("Oh the war, what you, ignoble, have done. We have smoke and woe instead of weddings. Our girls gifted their white dresses to their little sisters and went away, soldier by a soldier. Boots, you can't be with them and the green wings of shoulder straps. We'll be strong, we'll be brave, we'll be persistent, not afraid of bullets nor grenades. And after all, we will try to come back. Something like that is the "Greatest gen" vibe. ). As for the silent gen it's the war kids, shy and sickly - they tend to have a lower height, and also the beatnik vibes. Also the first gen for females to cut off their hair and wear it loose.
I respect the research you put into each generation and implemented it into your art. I also respect the social commentary you gave on each generation. Subscribed. Your art is creative and wonderful.
I love lavendertowns character designs, she gives each design so much thought, and puts in the effort to make it happen. thank you lavendertown for being so amazing ^^!
As a Gen Z I have grown up scared. There's always something coming and you are completely helpless. We've grown up with every other week hearing about a trusted member of society being arrested, or under investigation for unspeakable things. We get all these warnings about climate change shoved down our throat and are expected to just be OK with the fact we're being told the world as we know it could end in OUR lifetime. We're thrown into politics and are forced into choosing a side because in this day in age the mindset is "if your not with me, you're against me." Not to mention hate crimes, school shootings, global pandemics, threats of another world war, etc. Over 55% of our generation is depressed and we have some of the highest suicide rates of any generation. It feels like all the other generations problems are being dumped on us and WE are the ones expected to fix it.
I mean just because they protested certain things, doesn't mean they weren't awful in other ways. And not everyone was a hippie at the time either, even within the same generation, in actuality it's probably pretty similar to black lives matter groups and protests, they're relatively common but not everyone is with the movement unfortunately.
so basically “boomers” were just like us, protesting for what they believe, they had to go through a lot, I don’t think we realize how similar they were to gen z
As a person who belongs in gen-z, the amount of relate I felt when you said "weebs, k-pop, depression", I felt you calling me out 😭💕 lmao. Btw omg you draw so beautiful, your art style is so unique and wonderful🌸❤️🥺🥺💅

One of my friends tried to (tw!) commit suicide. I’m glad you get to have a good middle school experience. (Sorry if that wasn’t a very fun thing to read but I needed to say it.)
I’d love to see this concept as an actual series - four girls that embody the different generations, and their struggles with living in society while also being just a weird group of friends that often get into trouble. I can already imagine some major plot points for this. 😎
I genuinely learned something about the lives and eras of each generation, and of course your work is excellent. This is the quality of content UA-cam needs.
A lot of boomers I know are still hippies. Sometimes in the way they dress, but even if they dress more 'normally' now, they often have surprisingly countercultural hearts if you get to know them more.
Yeah I kinda dislike it since the "personality" of each group becomes more apparent as adults. Not gonna catch a current Millenial doing scene culture.
@@desuordie4856 I guess we gotta define what scene culture symbolizes? Desperately wanting to belong to a culture of our own and wanting to be united through music and technology after seeing how isolated and sad our boomer / gen x parents were? Which grew into the "i hate my life" memes because we've seen how hard work doesn't necessarily pay off, and there's a lot more to life than just work and getting around that is not very achievable for most of us something? Idk millennial grasping at straws here
Gen Z design: E-girl, crazy, anime Millenial design: Cute, shy, _literally Astolfo hair_ Gen X design: _ur mom_ Boomer design: haha 1980s outfit go brr
I’d like to disagree. Gen Z is very mature for their age. A lot of us, my friends and myself included, regularly debate politics and have to constantly worry about the fact that our world is blown to crap. Not only this, but we typically have to go through certain mental illnesses that a lot of people above our age know nothing of. We are also very involved in social reform. Keep in mind, at oldest currently I think we’re about 20 so....
Is the 1st teenagers that they were at silent generation. Is also fought in fought in 2 and Korea. It's also going to the greatest generation in the lost generation.
If you aren't sure if the gen z mental health problem thing is real here is some info for you: suicide is the #2 leading cause of death for teens, and #1 is unintentional injury which includes so much. And #3 is homicide. So #1 is all injury's, #2 is being so sad you purposely die and #3 is getting murdered, that's insane.
Speaking of boomers , my grandparents grew up as hippies and were apart of the main stream protests around that time. My grandma never lost that enthusiasm and even went out of her way to make lgbtqia+ posters and flag to wave outside and even cried when she couldn’t go to the BLM protests because of COVID-19.
Not just a very pretty drawing showcase, but very nice to listen to also. Its always interesting to reflect on the history and historic periods, their atmosphere and ideas that were floating around. Loved it. Wish you all the best in your art endeavours!

Me: thinking about how boomers are now
Me: hmmm something went wrong..but where?
They grew tired of being rebels and just wanted to sit down and go back to when they were the nuanced ones
All the good one's died basically
Personally, I think the Karens we see now are people who grew up hating their peers and only listening to what the older generation told them to do.
I think there's a few reasons for that:
That's because what we call "boomers" today generally aren't actual Baby Boomers. They're usually Gen X

He's an ALMOST-Milennial.)
And yet, we also were possibly the last generation to truly have the wild rogue-kid freedom of just running around all day with NO way to contact your parents in your pocket at all times, climbing on things we shouldn't climb on and hanging upside down from the jungle gym without anybody having a heart attack.

The boomers were actually the first punks too. The punk uprising was in the 1970s
nope. they were born in a different time when slavery was newly disestablished. lol. as you grow old you are supposed to go to left because you start to become sympathetic towards others not go conservative.

I think millennials and Gen z relate to each other a lot more than previous generations as we were brought up in such similar situations while other gens seemed to hold disdain for the younger gens.
This.

GenZ: *puts on sunglasses* God, I'm depressed! *finger guns*

It's interesting to think Boomers were protestors, going for out of the norm. Now Gen Z is doing exactly same thing. I wonder how we will turn out.
probably the same as boomers. You know the saying: History repeats. :(
I couldn't stop thinking about that! Like it's so weird to think that boomers were so openminded and socially active and now they have the opposite reputation...makes me scared of getting old lol I don't want to become close minded. ; - ;

I wonder how the "Silent Generation" would have been depicted? I know the current most prominent generations were drawn but I'd love to see 1928-1945.
Could be anything from your archetypal 1950s-early 1960s aesthetic (probably not always as high-class as what film stars wore) as depicted in shows like Mad Men, to Greaser and Beatnik subcultures. Plus protest signage and coats for those who gave the civil rights movement momentum, since MLK himself and many other movement figureheads were from this generation.
that's my grandma!
Well basically, I remember my grandma (I think she's born around 1930..?) telling me about how she first bought and wore a pair of pants, and her friend's mother was scandalized and scolded her about what was acceptable and what was not 😅
Yeah nobody really talks about that generation

As a Millennial, I only have one thing to say to you: welcome to the club.
Yeah, time to pass the baton. We tried long enough to fix it all. They are smart. They'll accomplish what we couldn't. c:

I mean just because they protested certain things, doesn't mean they weren't awful in other ways. As a millennial, your drawing of the emo/scene kid was too nostalgic.
You are such a good artist I love your style!
This looks like the most gay friend group and I love it.

As a Gen Z, I think we just colour our hair to replace the colour of our futures that is continuously draining
Thats a good idea
Speaking of boomers , my grandparents grew up as hippies and were apart of the main stream protests around that time. My grandma never lost that enthusiasm and even went out of her way to make lgbtqia+ posters and flag to wave outside and even cried when she couldn’t go to the BLM protests because of COVID-19.
Wholesome comment of the year award 🏆
My respect for ur grandparents 📈📈📈📈📈📈
Aw, she sounds like a great person!
This is a rare boomer, must protect at all cost
I LOVE YOUR GRANDMA
Not just a very pretty drawing showcase, but very nice to listen to also. Its always interesting to reflect on the history and historic periods, their atmosphere and ideas that were floating around. Loved it. Wish you all the best in your art endeavours!
