@@mcskeet No problem. Everyone's artstyle is really just their way of seeing the world and everyone's view is different so you shouldn't sweat it. Even if you look at Haley's work it's pretty inconsistent but still recognizable
one thing ive noticed that has helped me with anatomy and proportions is taking old vogue issues, and breaking down the models into basic drawing skeletons (shapes and lines, etc) of course, since vogue is more focused on "the ideal female body type TM", I make it a point try to look up refs for other body types (and genders lmao) so I can learn more than just that body type.
9:56 I recently had a life drawing class at school and I was surprised by how much I loved it, as I usually get really frustrated when I'm using references and my drawing still doesn’t turn out right. Seeing something in real life compared to a picture does make a huge difference!
I love how diverse the characters you draw are! You also give pretty good advice on how to improve art. As a young artist who is often asked how to draw by my friends I often share advice that I gain from watching your videos. Your a really big source of inspiration for me and I enjoy your voice overs. It’s so relaxing 🙏🏼 thank you very much for existing❤️
Have any of yall noticed that she uses colored linereart now? And little shading? Everyone? Ok Edit: omg, wtf?! 900 likes?! Thanks yall 😚 seriously thank you 💖
Also, the contrasting colors! I mean her art was always few steps from monochromatic, I'm glad to see some bolder, braver colors here. Not that I didn't like the pastel-y drawings, but I do enjoy this too. More exciting to the eye I would say.
I love seeing the overlap in hobbies/niches in art and other things. Like when she says to look up cosplays, fashion stuff, or use video game houses. It's so nice to see how everything is connected :)
The big thing I have trouble with: Coloring. I’m more of a traditional artist, and my main utensils are pens and watercolor pencils. The only problem is that I have trouble shading, and making the picture eye-catching and vibrant. If you wanna see an example of this, look at my profile picture. Even if it’s changed, I have sworn to draw my pfp so that I have a unique image that represents my style. Any advice for this?
Coloring? Yeah me too. But a way to make it vibrant is to press hard on a color pencil and keep doing it to make it bright and vibrant. U can also trace it with sharpie. It will make it pop out! But... u might need to sharpen ur pencil ALOT. So I use markers (I don’t recommend it though)
Memes are a m a z i n g, I love my crappy two page comic I drew, colored, and inked in like 3 days, idk two years ago 🥰 It's awful and I could've done so much better even at the time but it's mine and hilarious to look back on
Fun fact: I was never interested in fashion itself but I liked drawing different kinds of clothes that I was more interested in drawing that than what I wear Especially when mom won't let me wear comfy things then I can atleast give my drawings the freedom to be comfortable ;u; Edit: and yes, motivation running out is also big problem-
That’s a problem for me too. My parents question my fashion choices but they’re literally the ones that buy my clothes- At least my drawings will have all the cottagecore, academia, and lolita clothes they will ever want (I don’t know if I spelt those right)
@@thesteelsquid863 Wrong kind of loli! Lolita is a nice category of fashion. It’s p popular in places like Japan but it’s getting more popular in the west too. It’s got many subcategories but they’re all really cool. Loli is another thing that I’m not a big fan of but eh
I'm convinced no one can ever be equally good at backgrounds and characters. Or human characters and vehicles/mechs-you can always tell which one they feel more comfortable drawing.
5:19 Ibis paint eye tip: make an layer of that eye then press add special layer then press duplicate layer then press the button which makes it go left or right then boom you got it! I hoped this helped for ibispaint artists!
Two things you missed out. (1) When someone asked if you can draw them. I started a couple days ago looking at anime characters and drawing them on paper and my friends are all w8eebs I was surprized at myself and I've already had a request to draw someone as well as some of my friends wanting copies and I've only been drawing a couple days and it gets really stressy. (2) When one part of the drawing doesn't look the same as in the photo. Most people would leave it but I'm staring at it for ages fighting temptations to fix it and I give in and since I like to draw on paper and the paper almost rips AND IT STILL DOESN'T LOOK RIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! *side note I like to draw anime not realistic stuff*
Oh- oof I know how you feel. I felt like that when I first started (I still feel like that sometimes). When drawing from a reference and it doesn’t look right I’d recommend just taking a break from your drawing. Like when you hit a trouble area and you feel “oh no I’m gonna have so much trouble with this” take a break it’s a good way to freshen your brain and try to not be super strict with yourself it’s okay if it doesn’t look right. With the having people wanting to draw you problem you either say “okay that’ll be 5 bucks” they usually leave you alone after that (and if they don’t leave you alone you can just be persistent and they’ll leave eventually and if your lucky you might end up with 5 bucks) If it’s a friend and you don’t wanna hurt their feelings say “I’m sorry it’s kinda overwhelming if I take requests from everyone so I’m trying to limit the amount of people I’m gonna draw” if they are a good friend they should understand that art can be hard and time consuming
When this video gets posted: 99% of comments : Talkin about how early they are. 1% of comments : Actually talks about the art in the video, and how intresting it is. Edit 1: wtf??? Thank you for 300 likes this is actually the most I’ve ever gotten Edit 2: if you do or don’t agree with my comment you don’t have to reply with “not really or something” it’s just a sarcastic comment on how I see so many early comments when my favorite UA-camr posts! this applies for many UA-camrs.
2:41 yeah, whenever I want to choose a casual outfit for a character, leggings/jeans/skirt, turtleneck/hoodie/long sleeved shirt That's why I only make fanart of already existing characters with already existing outfits--
My biggest struggle with costume design is wrapping the fine details in perspective/foreshortening especially if my references don't share the same pose as my work.
I find the technically and rules involved with drawing environments in perspective comforting, and it involves a lot of shapes that are much easier to understand like cubes, so I feel like I'm more confident in my ability to draw something like that
The first one is actually the exact opposite for me, I love drawing buildings and perspective and all that stuff but drawing people and natural stuff is really a PAIN.
Me: *is listening to a student talk about how hellish architecture is at uni* Also me: *clicks on video* Haley: Their problem is *ARCHITECTURE* Me: *chugs holy water*
The best tip that I’ve learned for anatomy (like you said in the video) is to think of things in shapes! That arm that you can’t draw? Simple shape! Especially if you’re just sketching, I like to start with literally rectangles, circles, etc. etc. and then I like to add on details slowly later ☺️
I used to have problems with drawing clothes to my characters and I guess, I still have a little, but watching others' drawings has helped me a lot. Thank you and other artists who know how to draw clothes! :)
4:33 Oh my god, that is my little sister with her art. She looks up to me for art advice but sometimes I really don't know how to help her because it's like she can't even see when something is really asymmetrical, and something I'm naturally good at is spotting asymmetry so I don't know how to fix the problem. This video was super helpful in that regard. I'll tell her "well, make the arms the same width" and she'll just be confused like "what do you mean, they look the same" Maybe I should encourage her to sketch digitally so she can flip her canvas and grow to see the asymmetry better Side note: I feel really happy because I have less of these issues than I would've expected. I used to think I was just a terrible mess and I had so many art weaknesses but this kinda helped my confidence. :D
I have been thinking about going to an art school but I don’t know a lot about them, could you possibly make a video on your experience? Thank you if you can.
I’ve finally started to get better at anatomy, and you really helped me with it! I’ve been slowly moving from just headshots to halfbodies too! I’ve also been getting way better at hands as well, thanks to both you and my older sibling.
I remember in 7th grade i was drawing a skeleton in class and someone asked me why I was feeling my side like i was, I answered honestly "counting my ribs"
I feel like it's not that background are hard to draw (which they are), but also that I never quite know how to tie the background and the illustration together and that's something I need to work on 😅
for the clothing one, i found that playing dress up games like gacha life help inspire more interesting designs. there's lots of cool and fun accessories to play around with and that really helped me (:
00:50 you are right i have only had one art lesson about prespective and like 100000000 in math class (gotta point out that we have about random stuff in art
The first two got me. I can get the hang of drawing more varied fashion in my characters but buildings and landscape might take some time. However, looking up interesting looking buildings was a good tip!

i feel like a big weakness of mine is leaving my sketch really messy/ambiguous, which really makes my life harder when i'm trying to render. everything is coming out well until i'm trying to figure out "what is this line?? why is her arm one big scribble?" yet, i never learn lol.

I needed this, especially that last part about anatomy, I'm always so focused on making things proper looking that I will ignore the praise for what I do get right.

one thing ive noticed that has helped me with anatomy and proportions is taking old vogue issues, and breaking down the models into basic drawing skeletons (shapes and lines, etc) of course, since vogue is more focused on "the ideal female body type TM", I make it a point try to look up refs for other body types (and genders lmao) so I can learn more than just that body type.
9:56 I recently had a life drawing class at school and I was surprised by how much I loved it, as I usually get really frustrated when I'm using references and my drawing still doesn’t turn out right. Seeing something in real life compared to a picture does make a huge difference!
Me after watching the whole video:
*”After all these years,,, I still have them all.”*
Everyone? Ok
Edit: omg, wtf?! 900 likes?! Thanks yall 😚 seriously thank you 💖
The colored lineart was always there tho
Omg sae
I think she meant not shading....but if not then im scared cause I really like her shading style ;-;
Also, the contrasting colors! I mean her art was always few steps from monochromatic, I'm glad to see some bolder, braver colors here. Not that I didn't like the pastel-y drawings, but I do enjoy this too. More exciting to the eye I would say.
ahh i just noticed- ✨ it looks amazing 💗
I love seeing the overlap in hobbies/niches in art and other things. Like when she says to look up cosplays, fashion stuff, or use video game houses. It's so nice to see how everything is connected :)
The big thing I have trouble with:
Coloring.
I’m nine BTW
Oh my god same, I HATE coloring with a passion.
Probably because I draw smol and don't work well with large canvasses 😅

Fun fact: I was never interested in fashion itself but I liked drawing different kinds of clothes that I was more interested in drawing that than what I wear
Especially when mom won't let me wear comfy things then I can atleast give my drawings the freedom to be comfortable ;u;
Edit: and yes, motivation running out is also big problem-
That’s a problem for me too. My parents question my fashion choices but they’re literally the ones that buy my clothes-
At least my drawings will have all the cottagecore, academia, and lolita clothes they will ever want (I don’t know if I spelt those right)
@@Ar-yp6nh eyo that last one 🤨📸
@@thesteelsquid863 Wrong kind of loli! Lolita is a nice category of fashion. It’s p popular in places like Japan but it’s getting more popular in the west too. It’s got many subcategories but they’re all really cool. Loli is another thing that I’m not a big fan of but eh

Ibis paint eye tip: make an layer of that eye then press add special layer then press duplicate layer then press the button which makes it go left or right then boom you got it!

With the having people wanting to draw you problem you either say “okay that’ll be 5 bucks” they usually leave you alone after that (and if they don’t leave you alone you can just be persistent and they’ll leave eventually and if your lucky you might end up with 5 bucks)
If it’s a friend and you don’t wanna hurt their feelings say “I’m sorry it’s kinda overwhelming if I take requests from everyone so I’m trying to limit the amount of people I’m gonna draw” if they are a good friend they should understand that art can be hard and time consuming
I think in a few older videos she mentioned people asking for you to draw them-
She didn’t really miss out on anything lol, it’s not like she was going to put every single thing in this video

@Carl The Meatgrinder ok that’s great to know, sorry you’re salty 😳✋🏻
I used to have problems with drawing clothes to my characters and I guess, I still have a little, but watching others' drawings has helped me a lot. Thank you and other artists who know how to draw clothes! :)

Oh my god, that is my little sister with her art. She looks up to me for art advice but sometimes I really don't know how to help her because it's like she can't even see when something is really asymmetrical, and something I'm naturally good at is spotting asymmetry so I don't know how to fix the problem. This video was super helpful in that regard.
I'll tell her "well, make the arms the same width" and she'll just be confused like "what do you mean, they look the same"
Maybe I should encourage her to sketch digitally so she can flip her canvas and grow to see the asymmetry better
Side note: I feel really happy because I have less of these issues than I would've expected. I used to think I was just a terrible mess and I had so many art weaknesses but this kinda helped my confidence. :D
Me: I should listen to some music to help me get into the mood!
