  • I was brought this old laplander and if I hadn't seen what I had got in my hands I would have guessed that it's an musical instrument; a rattle :)
Every possible part was moving and something needed to happen to safe it.

I love that old steel and leather--they contain so many stories in all their little nicks and scrapes and dents and gouges. Nice wood grain selection for the handle and overall a beautiful restoration!

I found in my research an explanation for why the traditional design of knives from that region do not have guards. But, do have a swell at the pommel. It was explained that the use of knives was also traditional. A drawing of the blade was the acceptable way to cut, not a pushing motion. When a pushing method was needed, a thumb was on the pommel to prevent the hand from sliding onto the blade. In the process of dressing of an animal, the hands were typically covered with blood, making it unsafe to use the knife with a pushing motion. So, if a person were injured they were thought to have improperly used the knife.

    • @thetopicala
      @thetopicala  7 років тому

I think you have got some point with that research! At winter time with big gloves you wont loose your knife due to swell while hitting tree/wood in icy conditions. Makes sense. Knife (puukko) and laplander knife were and still are produced for working - not stabbing/killing people. Unfortunately those things happen - globally. Thanks, Osmo

Boy you really blew that one! The older knife handle was certainly salvageable. Without having the original in hand it's hard to say whether the handle was good. I would have liked to see what the original looked like with a lot of oil soaked into the handle.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I really dont remember how badly the old one was rotten or cracked or anything like shrinken etc. I guess something between those. Sometimes replacing wood is the only and best way to take old blade back to live. Or do nothing and leave it like that.

Hallo Osmo, successful restoration. Less is more in this case.
Preservation of the old leather sheath, bolster and patina on the blade.
Sorry, but that's not a comment David John Huxtable, but a "crude doctoral thesis".
If this is not a joke, you need your head examined.

    and the human resources dept
shall be writing you that letter!!!
id like to see its blade given some tlc tender loving care too!!
my old laeku had similar pictures to this on its blade?
    how old was this knife?
i liked its tang end very clever for not letting tang move or slip forwards in use and bolster end cap nice n easy to fit?
    personally i think
    you are becoming lazier
    and lazier
i shall be contacting your line production manager in the morning!?
to explain to him that we have a few problematic attitude problem issues with you?!!!

    • @JamesParus

david john Huxtable new knifes are for shine. Patina is normal part of old knife and should be maintained.

    • @6brettes
      @6brettes 7 років тому

James Parus understood thanks a bit like antiques!! id still have defied the usual protocols & norms given that blade a bit of lustre and resoaked the holster in leather oil!! being reverential to age is one thing but if you are redoing renewing renovating one thing on a knife and not the other i think it can make it look odd! to have a shiney new handle and aged rough conditioned blade and holster!
this reverence for age maybe the accepted norm within this field of antiquity endeavours?
but i still reckon id have gone the whole hogs!
rejuvenated everything to give its overall apearances one of harmonised rejuvenation rather than just the 1 element or aspects? as by doing up just one element to a new standard it tends to highlight the deficiency lack of finish or used patina i reckon patina stands for over wear or poor condition of the rest of it!!
      patina = the objects
signs of aged use or textural finish!
i am afraid i am not so reverential towards objects of great age if you are endeavouring to only to do one aspect or renovate one element of an ancient object up and not the other it can tend to act like a beacon to the fact that this element isnt original nor has a aged apearances or patina that is equal to that of the other 2 important elements the blade and its leeched leather sheath?
i think perhaps it far better to harmonize its overall apearances by rejuvenating its overall apearances because when you look or visually perceive something an object or touch it feel it you do so as an physical object in its whole apearance! or in its overall entirety?
id have titivated not radically altered the patina but aimed to have rejuvenated the original blades lustre and fed the sheath with some oil
      or leather beeswax finish?
maybe i am just a maverick nightmare to the antique community?
but i do legitimately think if you alter one element of an antique without also harmonising or rejuvenating its other existing elements you can make the objects renewed apearance or element stand out like a beacon in cold contrasts to the exusting other untouched elements that still retain their un rejuvenated apearances a bit like chalk n cheese they dont harmonise aswell together? do all or nothing i say?
perhaps this goes against established norms
but it would have been what i would have attempted to have done is rejuvenate it in its entirety!!
      or left it as is!!
as i do not see the point of renewing one thing or element if you aint going to go and do the whole hog!!!
it can disharmonize its overall age apearance or patina for peoples who like to see its previous age or usages!!
i think it is far more authentic to keep it entirely as it was unadulterated!! untouched
      and authentic
rather than dabble with renewal of its handle at the sacrifice or ommisions in rejuvenations of its other two equally important phys elements its blade and sheath which contribute to its overall apearances which were left as is?
      all or nothing id say
but i believe the handle tang wobbled as wood was dry had shrunk
      back
so something had to be done about that!!
i just wouldnt have stopped at the handle
cuz the blade now looks just beat up against a nice shiney new handle the two elements apear to be incongruous
      have lost a certain harmony
      that existed before!!
when they were both equally beat up
      or had their original patina!
      its a tough call
but one element renewed in isolations or ignoral to the other 2 irregardless of established protocols tends to make it look slightly odd tampered with un authentic
      or incongruous?
in terms of its original age use or patina?
i say do it all up
      or do nothing!!
      all or nothing!!
i am probably a antique dealers worst nightmare and value of the knife drops 75%
      if i touched it!!
but hell id make sure it was all looking good afterwards rather than just 30% of it!!
as they say in england not my cup of tea having a beat up looking blade!! or sheath!!
just for the sake of the objects reverences for its great age?
id still want it to shine
      much like a magpie
      i like shiney objects
my nest is full of them!!
dont leave your jewellry out on your window ledge to dry or rolex watches or elses i will be there in a flash picking it up with my nosey beak!!!
flying off with it to my nest!!
incidentally the roman soldiers used to call the scottish gaels picts
the word pict comes from roman word pi or pie
meaning he who likes shiney objects
      hence word magpie!
because the romans never knew when the scots would raid hadrians wall often in bad weather they went on full alert in mist rain or storms as the picts used it as cover for one of their many raids etc
after they beat up the romans
killed them they often revisited their battle site & grounds to pick over the dead bodies of the killed roman soldiers for breastplates medallions or metallic shiney objects so as the battle field would be picked clean by morning before a detail could bury or recover them! so the
the soldiers observing the return and sinister ways of these scottish warriors stood upon the wall nicknamed the gaels picts or pies
      those who like shiney objects!!
      like a magpie!!!
      as their nickname!!
