This knife, so called small laplander belongs now to a very best friend of mine Guszti, from Hungary! He was as a so great help making my 'Messer machen', knife making on my journey to Germany, Bushcraft Akademie meeting this year on September. Lot of nice new friends and meeting old friends also; Taro, Sepp, Susanne, Cosmo, Mike, Jurgen, Marius, Marco... etc. What an adventure whole week! Love You Guys! We will meet once more again, Osmo

Hallo Osmo, strong leuku, great contrast between the bright antler crown and the dark stained curly birch handle. I like the three push buttons for the quick release.

I use pretty much the same tools as you do here in Ontario for making knives. I was fortunate enough to find a black cherry burl out in my wilderness wanderings one day, and it has made some beautiful knife handles. I'd have to improve greatly to match your craftwork though. That leuku is a sweet looking knife.

Beautiful knife workmanship and a nice sequencing to the video. I am guessing on this Laurin blade that its rat-tailed end was quite short compared to the larger and longer handle you made? In this case is there a certain type of 2-part epoxy bonding or bedding that secures the tail into the handle that is better than another? What epoxy resins or glues do you prefer? I am building a Yakut 125mm blade with a very short rat-tail likely using aluminum, wood, leather, and moose handle materials.
Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter Almost all the tangs in Finnish rat tail knifes are long enough for peening. I cut this to maybe 8 centimeter length and used it as a hidden tang. That was my original plan. Then decided to add the antler in the end which I had to attach with glue and brass dowels insted of using the help of that rat tail chance... the two pack epoxies are all good. Never met one which would have failed. I usually buy my epoxy from Brisa. That certain size, volume of glue is only sold in Finland. Araldit is the brand. Thanks, Osmo

Osmo, could you use beeswax to seal the antler piece and protect it from getting stained?
I guess you could. Pure carnauba is harder tahn beeswax anyway and I also cover the waxed area with tape before oiling. Just guessing. Thanks, Osmo

Yes, you polish a blade then the sander touches it.....infuriating, we all been there.

just make sure that you just check under your remote workbench that there isnt a group of small ninja like curly toe shoe wearing sammi s patiently waiting for your arrivals?! all their inferior made plastic handled puukos at the ready to stab your ankles next time your relaxing at your belt sander!! for calling your last knife a small sammi!! they often get small man syndrome!

i would have left the natural curly birch osmo,but the stain certainly sets it off very nicely,another nice knife.

i notice how you keep handle always on the moves during heavy sanding so as not to overscour!! you still cannot beat that final hand finish methods!! it looks great i always get butterflies before i give its final coat of polish or oil stain etc
because you never quite know how its going to work out until it miraculously alters in front of you i always find this bit final finitions exciting! very rewarding self
satisfying!!
youve made a nice selection on the grain effects in these wooden stocks!! always pays to be patient when dealing with these specialist stock woods! it gets too inconvenient & expensive if you try to rush it & make a mistake!! sanding is pretty safe processes as long as your aware of your erosion rate and shape parameters
i always use water to lift up & out the end grains
before shearing them off finishing with 00 000 x4 00 grit papers or finest wire wool
on the lathe!!
set at 2000rpm!
white friction polish works well
also if you do it this way?
finished off with a harder carnauba then buffed! i can honestly hand on heart say i havent yet disliked anything youve produced
and im fussy not many artists can satisfy me easily but all of your designs uses of materials do!!
its rare to discover not only a product or something you very much like but also made by someone with very similar finition tastes!!

You hear Saami you think reindeer is the antler unsuitable for this kind of job or is it an asthetic choice, also does anyone know what kind of wood is used in this video the pink colour was very striking

What do you use to stain the Birch ? Is it a special Oil mix?
No, it's all water based stain. I oil the handle afterwards.
so these knives are pretty sturdy? considering they are not full tang.
Abel Escareno I bet fulltangs are always sturdier naturally but laplanders have their places in bushcraft world. It's not an ax but you can do batoning work with it. You try to choose your best tool what you are going to do am I right? And yes, it's not supposed to use like crowbar like no knife is. Hope this helps. Thanks, Osmo

You must be thinking of that rat tail tang compared to fultang. I don't see any problem if you don't abuse it. Well, this is the way they have been made in general for hundreds of years - not with epoxy of course. :) which makes the structure even sturdier.
i live near to cognac in s western france i can see me having to setup a viking trading post & begin to barter in finest cognacs brandies and best armagnacs bordeauxs medocs in the world to soften up & influence the hardened hearts of our nordic warrior cousins
