trust me, you don't want the back to be rubberized. 10-15 years from now, that stuff is gonna either start cracking and disintegrating or get sticky as it slowly turns back into crude oil. it's also hard to clean and easy to damage. textured hard plastic is always the best option.

The irony is the N64's Joystick actually uses more advanced tech than most newer ones. N64 used an Optical sensor for its joystick, and not a potentiometer like most modern controllers. It was legitimately a more precise joystick, and if not for their strange choice in the stick itself it would be longer lived than most modern joysticks.

@@SMEARGLEX75 It's also in a dumbass spot for the controller (why was it in the center when it was the joystick you needed 95% of the time for N64 games and NOT the useless D-Pad?) and for some idiotic reason it was made of plastic.

    • @Doctors_TARDIS
      @Doctors_TARDIS Рік тому +51

@@mr.number9279 It was a brilliant design. They had no idea at the time if thumbstick or Dpad would end up the primary input. So they made it so that either could be the primary input, comfortably, simply depending on how you held the controller. If the thumbstick failed and the D-Pad ended up the primary input, you'd hold it in Classic Grip. If the thumbstick was a success, you'd hold it in standard grip.
There were games that used the D-Padas it's main input instead like Mischief Makers.

What made it worse was the joystick grinding on itself. The original release didn't have any type of lube on it. So the plastic would come off making the joystick itself loose. That is a major issue with the only solution to fix it is to replace the plastic stick itself and lube the components after

I like Retro Fighters. They provide a good high quality alternative for retro consoles. Especially with OEM controllers getting more expensive but as great as they are. They definitely should improve the D-Pads. Definitely takes the controllers down a few points, just feel mushy. If they can get those D-Pads feel less mushy they'll be near perfect.

Personally I think for this controller specifically, they should’ve tried bringing a more comfortable yet mostly same experience with the old N64 joystick, back then the tech was actually mind blowing how good it was, their only problem was with the joystick being not particularly comfortable (as well as the location on the stock controller, geez could they have picked a worse spot??) and the part wasn’t very well lubricated/secured so it would get very loose pretty easy, especially considering all those Mario Party “spin the joystick as fast as you can” games. But yeah the joystick itself is still more accurate than lots of newer controllers. A tad touchy, but still more accurate on the whole

The original N64 controllers used to suffer from issues like the joystick wearing out so it was really loose and floppy, or the character you're controlling randomly deciding to head-off in the wrong direction, something that still seems to affect even the Switch Joy Cons nowadays, there's nothing worse than trying to control a character such as Link in the N64 version of Ocarina of Time, only to have him decide to start walking to the left while you're trying to guide him across a narrow ledge right in the middle of a hectic battle against a boss.

I had a lot of trouble getting four wireless Retro Fighters controllers working simultaneously, and I'm pretty sure we were still having trouble getting three to work simultaneously, so we had to revert to some people using wired controllers. I was not totally impressed with that controller. The stick seemed to glitch out sometimes, but since I've tried just using one while playing single player games by myself, I haven't had any issues for a while. The original stick is still much more precise, and the best option to use for many games where fine and precise corrections are useful, like in a lot of shooters and racing games.
There have been some excellent high quality refurbishments of the original style sticks which use metal control sticks which, at least with some of them, are the best you can get, but it seems that demand is so high that it can be very hard to get them if you didn't already get on a wait list, and they can be insanely expensive.

I have tried controllers with potentiometer before. They do get the job done. Playing Crus'n USA franchise on N64, the analog control is very sensitive. Many controllers just don't have that same sensitivity as a N64 stock controller. We know the OEM N64 controllers used rotary dials rather than potentiometers. I will have to try it for myself. controller movement within game by barely moving the control stick really makes a difference. It is a shame that it's been how long, and we still can't get the official controller from Nintendo...

replacement parts for OEM are definitely there though and while not as great, they do pretty well while staying true. The issue is the n64 remote is the case of people that know too little and say do a modern remote design.
The remote before is FINE lol, yes is wears down but it did take literal years for it which is no different than any other remote like GC with its snapback problems or controller drift. Hell, the N64 was ahead of its time because you could do specific inputs while playing to reset the controller to 0 for drift or tilt the analog to adjust for sensitivity.
What the OG needs in terms of bringing it to the modern era is really these things, improvements to plastic/lubricants or even manufacturing of official OEM parts, the analog having a rubber cap to its base rather than plastic make it still that same design with the target circles, and make it more suitable for adult and kid hands or make or space out a bit between the prongs, not too much but a little more would help or make the remote wider than the OEM. I swear some people act too much like Scott the Woz

Did they ever fix the thumbstick? I have the original wired version, and during development. I told them to make sure the thumbstick was exactly like the original controller and that there was a program that you can use to check out how close the thumbstick was. And they kept saying "don't worry, it'll be exact".
Well, playing Goldeneye on the original N64, and the thumbstick on the Brawler is more darty. It's really noticeable when you zoom in on your sniper scope, as the sight bounces around on screen when trying to line up a shot, though the zoomed in sniper scope on the original controller is a lot more stable.
I asked them about this, and they admitted the thumbstick was a little off. So I told them to fix it for future releases. Did they ever fix it?

  • @sajenfacedude4984
    @sajenfacedude4984 Рік тому

I've run into an issue that I don't see anybody addressing online anywhere with this controller involving remapping. The ZR trigger by default interrupts gameplay and activates the NSO menu in N64 mode. This is kind of annoying to me because the trigger is normally an essential gamplay button that I regularly use while playing. I prefer using the trigger buttons for gameplay, not menus. I also prefer using the trigger buttons instead of the shoulder buttons. I'd like to remap the MINUS button to open the NSO menu, and remap the R shoulder button to ZR. So I'd rather use the ZR button to use Link's shield instead of the shoulder R button so I can rest both index fingers on the triggers instead of keeping the left finger on a trigger, and right one on a shoulder. I naturally and instinctually press ZR to play the game, but it interrupts gameplay and brings up the NSO menu (and I do this often... Muscle memory). I'd like to remap it, but this can't really be done as far as I can tell. N64 mode can't be remapped on the Switch as of Feb 2023. The pro controller mode can be remapped, but CAN'T BE REMAPPED PROPERLY because switch doesn't allow you to remap the right joystick direction to a button... So games like zelda that require a tilt of a joystick as a C-INPUT can't be remapped on this controller. I don't know why the controller is set to use the right trigger as the NSO menu button. The minus button would be a much better choice for the menu. It's like assigning the pause menu to activate when hitting the A button or something. Anyway, it's a small gripe, but it's annoying enough for me to possibly return the item. I've searched the internet to see if there some sort of fix for this, but I can't find anything. I asked the company's customer service about this, and they said that there is a firmware update that allows the controller to swap ZR and ZL. This is probably useful for Goldeneye because it lets the right trigger fire the weapon instead of the left... But it still doesn't solve the menu issue. It just moves the menu from ZR to ZL. I'd rather use ZL to aim, and ZR to fire in goldeneye, but instinctually trying to aim with ZL just brings up the menu. Anyway, it's definitely a good controller. and this whole thing would be solved if Nintendo would just let you remap joystick directions to buttons. I'm hoping Nintendo does that soon, or I hope Retro Fighters addresses this remapping issue with a firmware update or something. But seriously MOST people seem extremely happy with this controller, so there may not be enough demand for them to address this. I may be out of luck!
    In short:
-Remapping with this controller doesn't work very well.. or at all for N64 NSO
-If you prefer using both trigger buttons instead of shoulder buttons, you're out of luck.
-If you instinctually press ZR for gameplay, prepare to have your game interrupted with a pop-up menu (which is often for me
If someone knows a fix for this, please share. Thanks!

You had me sold on the buttons that had their own membrane per button... And then the C Buttons being a unified rubber pad just pushed me away again.
Those unified rubber pads need to be discontinued on any ($)40(€)+ controller and replaced with better alternatives, yesteryear. Every single controller I've ever used that had them became mushy after roughly 3 months of usage, and unusable after 6 due to them not remembering their original shape with daily usage (and mind you, I'm not rough with my controllers, far from it. I just have really hot hands, which worsens the deformation issue). I can forgive a mushy D-Pad, but not buttons.
From the NES era to XBOne/Switch Pro, including some PS controllers of any generation, that issue has never gone away, until I got a GuliKit KingKong Pro 2, that had separate pads for each button, which also makes them super easy to replace on that front, on top of being really durable (lasted me more than 6 months without any issues). This is why I was sold on the A & B buttons being separate at first, only to be disappointed afterwards.
The main competitors to this controller, the Tribute 64, or even the official Nintendo 64 controller, suffer A LOT from that issue. I've had to replace the rubber pad 3 times in 3 months due to them being mushy with my hands being pretty hot when playing SM64 hacks/OOTR, until I said "Floof it, I'll just get a costlier controller that won't break, even though it's not good for N64", and went for the controller above, even though I hate the Switch Pro layout with a passion (no notches on the stick and the + and - buttons... why).
So unless they can make a version that either has some actual switches for the buttons or non-unified pads with easily replacable buttons, that's a hard pass from me. I'd be willing to pay 60 or even 70 for a version with better buttons and a clicky D-Pad rather than a mushy/"original feeling" one.
Though, I'm sorry if it sounded a little bit aggressive, as it is definitely not my intention. I've just been jaded with all of that nonsense because what this does is just makes more waste as people wouldn't just "fix the issue", but rather "throw away the controller and buy a new one" as a whole every time that happens. And it happens. A LOT. And I've been had. A LOT, when I didn't know that was the issue. Official or 3rd party.
It just sucks to sink in hundreds and hundreds of european buckazoids on an industry that refuses to fix a fundamental yet flawed technology because it makes them more money with more controllers bought.
But yeah, for now, guess I'll be still on the lookout for a potential new 6 front button layout controller with a stick for N64 purposes. Maybe the fightpad scene will have something interesting in the future? Who knows. Might have to learn how to make my own custom controller at this rate.

How does the analog range feel? Have they fixed their stick? I bought 3 of these a while ago (wired n64 version), 2 for friends and then when I got mine I was sorely disappointed.
Took me a while to notice the reason too, but after a bunch of playing I finally realized it was the controller's fault. Turns out the analog range on these is odd, which removes a lot of precision. Worst of it being how diagonals have trouble reaching 100% input.
The eye opener for me was playing Mario 64. If you try running in circles Mario will often slow down when you hit a diagonal corner. Same happened with all 3 I bought, and I tested on both my N64 and on PC via emulators with the Raphnet adapter. My original N64 controller is battered and requires some elbow grease but still couldn't reproduce the issue I had with the Brawler64.
Nerrel has a good video on this. It's where I learned the cause of what felt wrong with mine. In short the analog range and curve from 0% to 100% input is very small, and can cut out early because of the square shape of the range (unconventional). You can fix it by increasing sensitivity in emulators, but you lose even more precision by doing that. It gets from 0 to 100 _real_ fast. Point is this joystick isn't 1:1 at all to what an N64 expects, so you get a badly fitting range and a subpar experience.
I mean it plays fine for the most part, but it's like any other shitty 3rd party controller: It's totally fine for casuals (the kind that can't even notice the 1s+ delay playing on their smart tv), but if you pay any attention to your input, it's bad.
Love the form factor, and the rubberized joystick doesn't feel bad at all. But the overall grip and feel is just very plastic-y and light as you mentioned. Not a deal-breaker for me though, I'll take the better layout over the tactile feel any day.
However the faulty joystick just makes it useless in the end. Mine just sits in its box and I use my GameCube controlller instead. C-stick isn't ideal for a lot of games, but it's overall a much, much better feel playing than the brawler64. I feel in control with it.
tl;dr: Brawler64 joysticks analog range is improper and very imprecise as a result, which makes games much less fun. Is this new one any different?
