    I agree. Transcoding is a necessity in many cases. Those that say it should not be transcoded do not live in the reality of different clients, slow internet speeds, and many other things that may prevent direct play

    Thank you for covering this topic. But they're are even use cases that you hadn't mentioned. In our household we always transcode to 8mbps for our internal streams for 2 reasons: 1. We have 3 Chromecast players and they just can't handle the original bitrate of our blu-ray media. 2. We frequently use (image-based) subtitles, which require transcoding (and that can't even be die in hardware). And we don't want to bother with fiddling around with text-based subtitles or creating "pre-transcoded" copies of our media. So transcoding is extremely useful to us and I wish that the channel would also test those "higher bitrate" and "image-based subtitles" scenarios in future transcoding tests.

    Hi! Great video.Right now I have an asustor nas and i want to build a plex server but it is going to be not enough powerful to trancoding. Im thinking to build a xpenology server just for some friends and family, no more than 20 users and not every of them are going to connect at the same time. Which could be a good hardware to have good transcoding? I have seen that intel has a dedicated cpu called quick sync, are these cpu better for transcoding than an i5, i7, ryzen 5 or 7? Thanks in advance

    Thank you so much for covering this topic. I understand some arguments around this for instance.. When people have total control over all clients connecting to their server, unfortunately; however, that is not always the case. I am not sure why that is lost on so many people. Direct play is indeed not always an option.
    You da man, Jason! Thank you for advocating rationally and putting forth a logical argument. You are not wrong AT ALL and you always put out solid useful content. I hope some open their minds to others use cases after watching your video.

    When you're sharing your media server, PLEX, it is up to you how to make that media available to your friends. You're not making any money off of it, therefore you could tell them to not allow videos to transcode or have them get something like an Apple TV 4K and have most of the videos direct play right away.
    If they don't want to comply with your rules, they don't have to use your server and can get media files themselves or bring a flash drive to which you can upload.
    The beauty though is that Plex has been improving their player, so a lot of files will direct play already.

    Does the streaming over the Internet by family and friends (and friends of friends) of your video collection use up much of your bandwidth? Do you have a limit on your unlimited Internet access or a threshold at witch speed is throttled down? Building the server and making videos about building the server provide a good way of keeping you busy and out of trouble.

  • @robertt9342

    I guess the better question is why does it matter to other people how person consumes media. It's not just remote clients, compatibility and bandwidth can be a real problem on your own network. What I like about Plex is that I can watch media whatever Plex device I want and wherever I want.
    Example: Sometimes I just want to stream OTA TV to an older iPad, and this is only possible with transcoding as the experimental (at the time) Plex decoder doesn't work on some older iPads. But this can be true with many different types of devices and configurations.

    Hey Jason, this is a really helpful video. thank you very much for it. I just need to know, is it better to keep 4k hdr file and transcode it automatically or keep a 1080p version of the same file. Currently I'm keeping 4k and 1080p versions of the files in the same folder. I just need to know how you do it and you opinion in this matter. Saving space is a huge a factor here. cheers.

    • @andrewmaxey5258
      @andrewmaxey5258 5 років тому +2

      Transcoding 4k automatically is a huge performance draw compared to 1080. Unless you have a dedicated GPU transcoder, that's probably not your best option. In my case, for now - I've put all my 4K content into a separate library and only granted access to shared users that can direct play it.

    • @AnuruddhaKarunanayake
      @AnuruddhaKarunanayake 5 років тому

      Andrew Maxey honestly it’s a good idea to keep 4K content separately. But 4K and 1080p version of the same file takes lots of hard drive space.

    I "transcoded" my whole library from 20+ mbit/s h.264 to 1080p/2-5 mbit/s h.265!
    quality is literally the same. you cannot tell the difference when the movie is playing. but I saved a lot of space and bandwidth. h.265 is your solution, I promise!

    • @andrewmaxey5258
      @andrewmaxey5258 5 років тому

      As of right now when I'm posting this, what you're recommending is a bad idea if you have anyone syncing files for offline usage or have clients that can't stream 265. Then your server is transcoding everything back to 264 very slowly with a potentially large performance hit, as well as the additional temporary storage for the transcoded files.

  • @scooterjes
    @scooterjes 5 років тому +2

    I may not run Plex I do use Emby and let it trans code cause I have noticed that the chromecasts seem to only want vp9 codec. BTW I went the route of Emby cause it was the only media server that I could figure out how to stream live OTA TV but a lot of the info that is valid for Plex is also valid for any media streaming server.

Will be moving to a AMD FX-8350 and a GTX 1050 Ti, from a i7 4790k and GTX 980, should still be plenty of computing power for 3 plex users, two are offsite and require a little transcoding (my upload is 40Mb) most of my movies are 10mbit or less encoded, so most of fhe time transcoding isn't needed, but sometimes it is.

      Your tv probably doesn't support the file format of those few that don't work right which is causing plex to transcode. The buffering may be caused by your server not being able to transcode fast enough. Direct play would solve these problems and the way to do it would be to access your server from a device that supports more file formats like an nvidia shield or a dedicated home theater pc.

Doesn't matter what movie she watches on her roku client it brings the quality down to 640 bit rate, sd, 0.7 Mbps at 328p which is garbage. I feel horrible having her watch this low quality film when she picked a 1080p movie. Granted a 10 Mbps is not a lot but I have no problem maxing this out? On the low end using the plex generalized 4x equation: 720p at 2Mpbs at x4 I would be within my upload range and still a big jump in quality. I have messed with the settings but I get a reply of my internet connection is too slow to up the quality. Is there a way to up this? I know plex uses deep packet analysis but have idea how to go around it.

    Simple reason really. My wife only uses the Chromecast, and my kids only use their handheld devices. At any given time I got 3 users transcoding. Me? I'm always rocking native. I need my Surround Sound.

    What exactly does a GPU do for transcoding that make it better than a CPU?

    • @Bytemybits

      GPUs are more powerful than cpus and can handle more for less cost. But, gpu xcodes can sometimes be slightly lower quality

      You need a router than can do channel bonding (NIC teaming) or 10GE.
      Whole hell of allot of money.
      Plus you need 10GE nics on your server and a 10GE switch to be able to utilize that bandwidth with CAT6a or better ethernet cable.
      If you have all that then you're golden.

    • @andrewmaxey5258
      @andrewmaxey5258 5 років тому

      Teach your shared users how to do this: support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/ .... If they still transcode after setting that up, then another more drastic (and time-consuming) approach would be to run your media through a tool that strips out the built-in subtitles, forcing them to use the above method.

    • @tangofan4u
      @tangofan4u 5 років тому

      @@andrewmaxey5258 I prefer to just use the built-in (image-based) subtitles and not bother with jumping through hoops tho get text-based subtitles.
