    One big thing that was left out of the discussion here...HW transcoding is going to eat up space in your metadata folder for Plex (where the server is stored). It would be great if there's a deep dive on how to set this up properly on multiple devices (mac vs pc vs docker vs vm) with multiple different configurations.

    This is a step in the right direction for Plex, but they do have some challenges ahead.
    As user of plex, we neeeeeed a way to limit the selection of video qualities available to a user so they don't transcode at qualities you don't have the files for. I just don't have hard drive space for every type of file

      @@defyiant Regarding your question, a NAS build without room for a dedicated GPU leaves you two options: 1. CPU Transcoding - you will need A LOT of horsepower and as many cores as you can find. 2. Using a iGPU from Intel. I've never used the built in converter. Often the best option is to have two files - one in 4k or whatever and the other in a more streamable size like 1080p or 720p
    In some cases you might have to reencode the 4k video proper. My Plex server for example sometimes gets mad at 4k h265 but plays well with h264.

    • @shaalan5672
      @shaalan5672 Рік тому

      From what I know, transcoding is also very dependent on your client/player (the device receiving the video). If h265 always transcodes when you play videos on a certain device, might not be an issue with your server. I Direct Play h265 media all the time on the following apps:
      -Plex for Windows (App not Browser)

    The GTX 1060 has a limit of 3 session (you can even see this in the Support Matrix link in the description), so did they use a custom firmware? Nvidia sets these limits because they want to sell their quadros and server cards which are mostly unrestricted but cost way more. Afaik you can have a lot more transcode sessions with newer Intel CPUs. So I would not use a dedicated graphics card for Plex transcoding. The newest Intel CPUs with P/E Cores still made some problems last time i checked, but 10* and 11* models with integrated graphics should be fine. It's also way more energy efficient.

If i have around 3 people watching with direct stream, I can have more people watching. @@rixatestarossa521 I use x265 these days for all my blu-ray rips. Pretty much all my hardware clients like the Apple TV natively now decode x265 in hardware and I can confirm during playback it's doing a simple Directplay. This lets me continue to rely on my ancient 2012 built AMD Plex server to stream out even 4k content since it's just spitting out compressed data to the clients (simple data transfer) and x265 lets me store most of those 4k films in only a few GBs of storage on that server so it's even less intense on that old hardware than the older/larger x264 files since it's only doing the storage and basic transmission (not decoding, hardware nor software).

    The i5-9600k with its iGPU certainly does adequate SDR to SDR transcode but certainly not HDR to SDR with tone mapping. It doesn't even manage one stream without caching pauses...

I don’t know if he would be able to play that even on his beefed up machine much less transcode it down to 720…

      Plus, what a shitty example for transcoding because Plex cannot handle 4K transcoding well at all no matter what the bitrate is. If this file was real, it'd have to be 8k which makes it an even worse candidate for an example of transcoding.

      You gotta remember he is independent, and we ARE on plex's channel. He might be in the video but this is very much their show. I'd wager the fact that this video is not just lame marketing drivel is mostly to do with how much creative freedom he was allowed and just how good he is at making videos. Good on Plex for bringing in some very nice polished content and supporting independent commentators in this way. I'd love to see them commission an entire manual walkthrough from Linux but let's face it, he probably doesn't have the time..

    Not including hardware transcode for free is why alot of people are jumping ship to emby or jelly. Also, doesn't Nvidia lock the gtx range to only 2 or 3 transcodes at a time?

    • @zedalert
      @zedalert Рік тому

      Yes, but there is no such restriction in Linux, since there is a patch to the Nvidia driver. So you can get as much streams as your GPU could physically handle, but do not expect too much from your low end GTX.

      @@zedalert I had heard of the patch, I believe it's available for Windows as well, but really should of mentioned in this video. Also I was under the belief that a 1050ti or 1080ti would be equal when it comes to transcoding as it's the same separate part of the core and it's no different between the same series of GPUs

    • @zedalert
      @zedalert Рік тому

      @@rossharper1983 Plex under Windows still don't support hardware HDR transcoding. So the only true OS for Plex is Linux. Number of streams mainly depends on VRAM, so 1080 Ti could transcode much more streams at the same time than 1050 Ti. But to be honest even with the lowest video card you have more then enough resourses for your entire family. In my case I have Quadro P400 with only 2GB of VRAM and even it could handle up to 7 streams. Few 1080 Ti probably would be enough for a whole hotel and TVs with Plex in every room.

    This is Plex PRO week? Come on. This is "let's get beginners more interested in Plex" week. No disrespect to Linus, there's nothing wrong with this type of content, but no "Plex Pro" is learning anything from this or any of the "peo" content this far.

    Is there a way for me to disable transcoding altogether? My Plex server is running on one of these tiny i3 Lenovo ThinkCentre computers. The machine is underpowered, but I have massive upload bandwidth and I doubt I'd ever need to transcode anything when viewing on my TV or from one of my "controlled" remote locations. Can transcoding be disabled?
