    Good list. What's classified as a slasher is so subjective. I personally wouldn't consider Texas Chainsaw, Psycho, Phantasm, Hellraiser, Candyman, Wolf Creek, Devils Rejects as slashers but if someone said they were I wouldn't argue. My list is 1. Halloween 2. Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Black Christmas 4. Deep Red 5. Tenebrae 6. Scream 7. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage 8. Friday The 13th Part 4. 9. Terror Train 10. Prom Night

      My definition of a slasher is this....a killer who stalks multiple victims (on one viction, killing others in his/her path) for the sole purpose of killing them. TCM is NOT a slasher in my book because Leatherface does not stalk. He protects himself. The victims come to him.

    • @chetn9ne
      @chetn9ne 6 років тому +3

      I can agree with that. I go back and forth on whether Psycho is a slasher film because I associate slasher films with a body count of over at least 3 or 4. I think Norman only kills two people in that movie. But I definitely agree that Psycho along with Peeping Tom had a huge influence on the genre.

    • @adriananderson9068
      @adriananderson9068 6 років тому +7

      if you think about that...saying that TCM is not a slasher because Leatherface protects himself, in a way, could kind of mean that Friday the 13th Part 2, could not be a slasher. I mean, in the same way that Leatherface is protecting his house and himself, Jason could be protecting his territory from these bitch ass camp counselors lolol. They both are a little slow mentally. I don't know. I might be looking too far into it hahaha. But truly, if u think about that...

    • @chetn9ne
      @chetn9ne 6 років тому +4

      Jason leaves his territory to kill Alice in the beginning of the movie.

      I honestly consider 4 my favorite. It's obvious why it's so fun to me too. The characters and premise are AMAZING. 10 year anniversary. Loomis chasing Michael on his way back (at his most emotional I must say his performance is fantastic to me), then there's Jamie who is really cool to me in the movie and the ending is the perfect way to keep the series going without Michael and it actually makes sense... and then they undo it in 5. There are other reasons, but I just didn't want people to die in it. The 2018 movie and the original both have characters like that too, but I just prefer Halloween 4.

      To be honest all the Halloweens are good... and what makes them good is the doctor Loomis.. Donald Pleasence the only one who could truly explain and understand Michael...The only one Michael actually seemed to respect... A friend and enemy... number 1 the best though... I kinda link it with 2 as same movie... Carpenter and Debra Hill wrote both scripts I believe

  • @paulvoorhies8821
    @paulvoorhies8821 Рік тому +7

    Thank GOD you included Black Christmas. Billy is a great character, I agree. It was also the first holiday horror film. Halloween was originally conceived of as a sequel to Halloween. Carpenter asked Clark if he was going to do a sequel. He said no, that he was done with horror, but if he were to, he’d have the killer escape from a mental institution on Oct 31, and name it-you guessed it-Halloween. Carpenter took it from there, and the rest is history.

    1. Friday the 13th (1980) - the heyday of the slasher genre in the 80's when they showed blood, gore and decapitation. It led the genre into the new decade and made it more popular than ever..... and copycats would follow.
    2. Nightmare on Elm Street- Freddy Krueger brought it up to a different level. Surgically sharpened knives on a glove that'll rip through you as you can't escape sleep. He didn't just kill his victims but play twisted games of cat & mouse with you before slicing, drowning, burning or whatever sick way he could send you to your doom
    3. Black Christmas - before Silent Night Deadly Night, Black Christmas took the slasher genre and turned it on it's heels that inspired films like Halloween and Friday the 13th. That and it's kills are enough to put it on the top 10 list.
    4. Halloween - You can't have a list without Halloween. Perhaps the first movie that took the horror genre into the new decade . John Carpenters classic created a new, faceless boogyman. No ryme or reason. Just a cold blooded killer who'll stop at nothing until he kills that person.
    5. Psycho - Hitchcock's gigantic masterpiece set in first person view from the killers perspective and switches to the people in the film. Sounds familiar? Friday the 13th did it as well. Shows that the films legacy and how it was filmed got passed on thanks to it's influential viewpoint and direction.
    6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Cannibalism, psycho's wearing skin masks, a weird eating scene with Grandpa.... Yeah it's influence of the genre shook heads with it's creepy dark morbic tone
    7. Scream - Modern day nods to the old horror rules spun in the 90's by the master himself Wes Craven. Unknown killer slices and dices teens who don't abide by the rules....
    8. Child's Play - Talk about any killer doll and the first one that comes up is Chucky. There would be no Annabelle without the 1988 hit about a local killer who transfers his soul into a good guy doll and desperately tries to get out by voodoo and into a boy who first discovers his true identity.
    9. Friday the 13th part IV: The Final Chapter - Fourth entry in the series didn't disappoint as it had it all. Better kills, antagonist (Tommy Jarvis) and a great ending to what was going to wrap up the series.
    10. Sleepaway Camp - Mysterious killer hacking people up at a camp. Sounds familiar? Like many would afterwards, Sleepaway Camp takes a nod from Friday the 13th and adds a oh so shocking twist at the end of the movie that'll leave you horrified and stunned. With plenty of unique kills in between.

    Black Christmas started it all. It was a huge influence on Carpenter. Carpenter once asked Bob Clark if he’d ever do a sequel to Black Christmas and Clark said no. Carpenter then asked if he were to do one, what would it be about. Clark’s answer:
    “..it would be the next year and the guy would have actually been caught, escape from a mental institution, go back to the house, and they would start all over again. And I would call it Halloween.”

    awesome review Lee out of all your videos this was the one i was most intrigued by. There was a couple on your list i have not seen i need to check out i.e The Burning. No Halloween 6? lol. Slasher is my favourite within the horror genre but to do a top 10 would be tough. top 10 horrors is far easier but here goes -
    10. Halloween H20 ( i have a massive soft spot for this movie)
    9. Child's Play (i think its a slasher!)
    8. Friday The 13TH (1980)
    7. Halloween 4
    6. Valentine
    5. Friday The 13TH part 3
    4. Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
    3. Pyscho
    2. Scream
    1. Halloween (1978)
    I am also a massive fan of movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn but i don't think they are classed as slashers more sort of Hillbilly cannibal type killers!!

    Oh my gawd, I LOVE your list! I love every film on your list, as well as your honorable mentions. The only film I've not yet seen is Bay of Blood (but I'm going to see it before the end of this most perfect, festive month!) I love the style that Argento's classic films have. There is nothing in the horror genre like an Argento film! I actually describe Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebre, and Phenomena as the most "gorgeous, grotesque horror films in the world." His work is art of the highest form!
    The only film I would like to see receive more love is Silent Night, Deadly Night. So brutal, so fun, so crazy, creepy, campy & just a great slasher!

I've seen all of them except Tenebrea... but now I want to! And.. if you haven't already, you absolutely have to see The Prowler... one of my personal favs... directed by Joe Zito from Friday 4, make-up effects by Tom Savini... and a final girl that strongly resembles Amy Steel from Friday 2... how can ya go wrong with a lineup like that?? Once again, keep up the great work and... I want that book!! lol

    My top ten slasher movies:
    1.) Psycho ( I know most don't consider it a slasher, but I feel most slasher movies owe it to the success of this movie)
    2.) Halloween 1978
    3.) Scream
    4.) Halloween 2018
    5.) Friday The 13th Part 4
    6.) My Bloody Valentine 1981
    7.) Halloween II 1981
    8.) Psycho II
    9.) Friday The 13th Part 3 ( more of a guilty pleasure)
    10.) Nightmare On Elm Street
    I always felt that My Bloody Valentine was super underrated, and it's a shame we never got a sequel. Especially considering SPOILER ALERT...........................................................they never caught the killer.

    In my opinion Mario Bava is the unwitting creator of the slasher genre. His "Bay of Blood", released in 1971, has everything the genre needs to be defined as such and he has clearly anticipated all of them because Black Christmas was released in 1974 while Halloween in 1978. Furthermore, “Blood and Black Lace” is also to be considered. for the importance of having the serial killer in disguise. Another fundamental film is Sergio Martino's “Torso”, released in 1973 if I'm not mistaken, another extremely important film together with Bay of Blood. But Mario Bava is the father of the slasher genre in my opinion.

I obviously mean for the style and the details that the slasher genre must have. Except Friday the 13th came out 9 years after Bay of Blood. Really enjoyed this list, liked how you also paid tribute to influential classic titles like PSYCHO. Now gotta watch BURNING and some of the FRIDAY-Moves (only ever seen the 1st one). Have you watched BLOOD AND BLACK LACE? It's a classic flick by Mario Bava from 1964, which was way ahead of it's time, with a masked Killer murdering behind the backdrops of a Model Agency. It may not be as violent as other films on your list, but it's stunningly stylish, with some surreal lightwork, and has established a lot of now classic tropes in the Giallo Genre as we know them today, like beautiful women in peril, killer with black leather gloves, extended POV-Shots, etc.

    The slasher sub-genre is my favorite of Horror, so making a list of the top films of the genre would be extremely difficult. However, I'll do one anyway. Also, the Prowler is very similar to "My Bloody Valentine" except this time the killer wears Army fatigues. I also believe that 'The Burning' didn't get sequels and was turned into a franchise was because the filmmakers thought people would draw too many comparisons between it and the Friday the 13th films which are no doubt similar in many ways.
    1. Halloween (1978) - The granddaddy of them all and one the main officially made these type of films mainstream.
    2. Psycho (1960) - Pioneered the genre.
    3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - Some people might not personally consider this a slasher film which I can understand completely, but to me it is. A slasher is a film with a sub-part to high body count and one that involves a killer with sharp implements as their weapon to stalk their prey which is applied in this film after the first three deaths when Leatherface leaves the farm to kill Franklin and
    4. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
    5. Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), or Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) - I couldn't pick one Friday the 13th film because every movie left their mark in their own significant way, but the three that I mentioned did it the overall best.
    6. Scream (1996) - Best of the 90's
    7. Black Christmas (1974) - One of the most underrated slasher films of all time, and without it Halloween wouldn't exist.
    8. The Burning (1981) - Some of the best gore effects ever, and possibly of all time. Tom Savini deserves all the credit for making the kills visually look amazing. I can only imagine if Friday the 13th films had the same level gore this movie had.
    9. Sleepaway Camp (1983) - One of the best twist endings ever.
    10. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) - Many would probably laugh at the idea of this making any list, but the premise and theme of the film focusing on a kid's common fear of Santa Claus and that fear conquering and consuming them always interested me. Plus, it was the most controversial slasher film of the 80's which fueled people's attention to Horror even more.

    I watched The Prowler after seeing My Bloody Valentines and really liked it, its another one that Tom Savini worked on and some of the kills are excellent and the killer is mystique. Another decent slasher if you haven't seen it is See No Evil with Kane..the story is depending on who you ask, I think its okay, but the kill scenes are brutal..highly recommended.
