CORRECTION: the original hi-hats I have in this video are Roland VH-11s. I made a mistake thinking they were the VH-10s in the video.

Sweetwater recently sent me the new-ish Roland VH-14D electronic hi-hats to check out. I figured since I already own a TD-50, it would make a perfect video. The VH-14Ds completely blew me away, shattering every expectation I had going in. I really didn't think it would be worth spending over $1000 for a set of hi-hats for my e-kit, but I was wrong. Coming from the VH-10s, it's a night and day difference.
Also, sorry for the color on the one angle. iPhone cinematic mode is strange in comparison to my other cameras. /shrug

This is a GREAT review! I've been searching everywhere for a video detailing the articulations available. No other videos have done it adequately; they all tend to power through. You've played the hats with enough finesse to show the full range of how they respond. Thanks! I think I need these.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! I have the same kit that you've got there, and I think it's finally time to upgrade the hi-hat.
Fantastic video bro!
Glad you liked it!
I'm 50/50 on getting these. They are superior one can tell. I like the possibility of having the hihat bell sound for more reggae/ska stuff too
Thank you for the extensive demo, Nick
Awesome video! Great and thorough explanation! You have me almost convinced to get it! How do you feel the acoustic levels of the vh-14D are compared to the VH-10. I've heard some people say they are quite a bit louder. I recently got a td-27 upgrade pack with the digital ride and the ride is definitely a little louder than the previous cymbals but so far it's been fine for me. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you, Jordy! The VH-14D is a little louder, I think. I don't have them side-by-side anymore, but from what I remember, the material is a little firmer and, being that it's 2-pieces, you hear it more when you clamp the hats together.
Great review!! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Agreed with everything you said. Great review.
I think for proper pairing the cymbals need to touch each other upon connection with the module (loose clutch) so maybe that’s why the pedal doesn’t work?
Thanks for sharing this. I came from acoustic drumming and have had my TD-25KV for years now and have hated it. I think the hi-hat is the biggest problem. The VH-11 is horrible and after your review I think I just need to bite the bullet and buy the VH-14D.
Also, I noticed you had an extension bar that you have your TD-50 mounted to. I have been trying to find some way to get my module away from my hi-hat and have found nothing until I saw what you did. You've helped me in two ways. Thank you much!
These hi hats wont work on td25. Td50 and td27 only. Digital inputs.
What about compressing the hi-hat and the bell of the vh-14d?
Can you get the splash sound with a light tap of the stick when it is wide open? I still have the sound of friction between the two cymbals ?
Just got the VH-14s and there is no comparison, they wipe the floor with any other electronic hi hats I have played.
A shame, I struggled with the open/close on these. When doing fast 16th notes it was just not registering the open/close properly. I've returned them
Id recommend getting some rubber protectant for your cymbals, and off course cleaning them off first with a damp cloth. Roland treats them from the factory but they dry out over time. It's worth it not just for the looks but to keep them feeling the best. Really good comparison.
That's a great idea!
@@NickCesarzDrums 303 protectant works well.
Thanks for the video! I must be the only person not impressed with the VH14D. Used them at Guitar Center and they felt like any other edrum hihat. Was it easier to do foot splashes? Maybe on a Roland module, but foot splashes on the VH14D felt the same as the VH10 on my pearl mimic. In terms of pedal response, the VH14 still seemed slow and sluggish just like the VH10 does on the mimic. I think the issue is processing the pedal input on a edrum hihat: takes too long for complex hihat movements and every edrum hihat feels sluggish to me. The best response I've ever gotten on an edrum hihat is using a stationary cymbal for the hihat and using a separate dedicated pedal like the Roland FD9.
Does anyone know what the settings in the modul shut stand on when it is TD50X. Cant get the hi hat too fast chick
Everything you demoed and said was great but it was funny when you said maybe Roland can bring the price down😂😂😂😂. I mean it’s Roland. It’s great, I have them, but it’s still Roland and the only way prices go is up😂
LOL you’re not wrong 🤣
20:47 Jeez, a tad rough on the gear, aren't ya?
VH-13 sounds way better dialed in properly. I have a TD-50X module but I use a 14" Zildjian LV80 highly modified and will put this VH-14 to shame. Dont get me wrong but for over a grand it better sound way better than that and made a mistake buying the PD140DS. Great review though
It sucks but I found a better price solution to the VH14 is paring the VH10 pad with the FD-8 hi hat pedal. Plays very realistically with my TD17 and better than using the controller or the VH10 and a hi hat stand
I don't like the feel of a 2 piece Hi Hat.
I upgraded to this kit from an Alesis Serge, and I prefer the old floor controller of the Serge, it's more responsive. Also it just doesn't FEEL like a Hi Hat (because of the softness). Having a silent kit is not the goal of all users. Some of us use Ekits to be able to customize sounds.
I'll be looking for a way to use the Alesis foot controller with just the TOP of this Roland HH, so that I can make use of it's positional sensing..
These hats work with the TD17 line?
I don’t believe so. They require the Digital USB Input only on the TD50, TD50X, and TD27.
What do YOU think of the VH-14D electronic hi-hats? Too pricey? The best e-kit hats available?
Way too pricey. If the price was about £250 then it would make more sense but not £1000+ for just an upgrade for one part of the kit. At that point you might as well go acoustic as you can get decent hi-hats for about £50. But it just depends on whether you are a dedicated madman who wants to keep quiet, have a realistic hi-hat and way too much money to piss up a wall, or if you are cheap and don’t care about noise then just go acoustic as there is a bit less faffing
@@lightningjet9444 £250 😅 You seriously can’t expect Roland to price Digital Hi-Hats at virtually the same price as their entry level VH-10’s. You can find them for roughly £650 in the UK, which is a perfectly fair price.
Isn't the one you already had the VH-11? I think the VH-10s controller is completely out of plastic whereas yours seems to be partly out of metal.
Good eye. I feel embarrassed now! I definitely am using VH-11s in the video. Need to correct that now asap!
ROLAND must be very sad when everyone places this position-holding-thing of the bottom cymbal the wrong way, even if they write it very clearly in their manual. Nice Review though!
I just read that you only get the "full" experience of the digital hihat if you have the TD50X... So if you have the TD27 V2 module, you won't get as good an experience or what? 😰
AND currently I own an ATV 14 hihat, so anyone that have upgraded from ATV to the Roland digital hihat that wants to share their experince?
Finally someone reviewing edrums that can actually play and understand the importance of triggering for nuance.
Thats a $1500 hihats,EFnote has a kit with that quality hihat for $2800 🤷🏻♂️
And thats why I'm getting an Efnote 3X!
The Sound of the hihat which is prduced by the td-50 is really really Bad and extrem unrealistic.
Do you have any recommendations other than Roland? Or just stick with real drums and cymbals?
I dont see the point of paying that kind of dollar ev kits for me are convenience for practicing with a lot less volume
Cant find video about it 🤔🤢
this thing is loud as hell. terrible for my appartment
That’s what volume controls are for….
Man, that thing is loud af. The purpose of e-drums is to play at home.
