    Hi Tim - I do my own oil changes at earlier intervals - no one that I know of ever wrecked an engine putting fresh oil in it. I own a few engines so I email myself the change mileage. I use a cheep plastic sealable drain container and recycle the drain oil etc properly. My Tiger 800 and BMW each take1 full jug of Motul synthetic. I have changed early prior to a trip. $200 for an oil change alone is a lot of beer and pizza.
    Safe travels

      Great point! I'll be doing my own oil changes going forward. I just wanted the service reminder reset but I'll just have to deal with that next time.

    I have to agree with you on cost of maintenance. I just replaced my Tiger explorer 1200 after it was totaled with the 900 rally pro. The 1200 was oil changes at 5k and at 10k "major service" which included valve adjustment & throttle body sync....$1500! The 900 is valves every 12k, and I would guess similar cost. Oil change/minor service every 6k. But, WHAT A FANTASTIC BIKE!

    Regarding Baja......I would like a video detailing what you needed and how you prepared for the border crossing with the bike, paperwork, insurance, visa length, etc. Thanks again.

      I will definitely add that to my list. Might not be out for a bit though my trip got pushed back to January or February. But I will definitely make that video for you.

    I change the oil and filter on my Tiger for about $40.00 and 15 minutes of time. 4 qt of 10w40 Supertech full syn motorcycle oil from Walmart and a Napa gold oil filter, easy peasy ! Also a late model Subaru oil filter (eg. Fram XG7317 ) fits perfectly and has more capacity than the short motorcycle filter.

    Dude i did my own oil change with good oil it was like 90 bucks with a filter. As for valve adjustments it’s not that hard once you get the tank off it’s pretty gravy.

    I like your videos, very helpful and has improved my knowledge of travelling. I will be going around Australia next year. I don't know if you have ever been there or not. But I have watched a few videos of guys going to the tip of Australia in North Queensland. Very challenging especially on a DR 400. Very hardcore. Enjoy you next adventure and stay upright.

    Definitely with you re. oil change mileage. 10k miles intervals is just crazy with modern Motorcycles. I don't care how special the oil is - most modern bikes are in a far higher state of tune and therefore more highly stressed than the average car (not including new cars with tiny turbo-charged engines). Yes, motorcycle oil has to lubricate gearboxes and clutches (excepting those with dry clutches and separate transmissions of course), so it is highly engineered and full of special additives, but it has to work hard. 5000 mile or yearly changes for me - I'd like a shot at high mileage reliability 👍

    Are you sure about the oil change intervals? I have a Tiger 850 as well, the intervals are 10 000 kms, not miles. Also, any issues? Mine bounces above 50km/h, the dealer can't seem to figure out why. Thanks for all the awesome videos!

    • @FTAAdventures
      @FTAAdventures  8 місяців тому

      You’re right I was looking at the wrong number. My bad, thanks for letting me know. No issues with mine other than a tire noise at 60-62 mph. Looking to change tires soon anyways so that should go away.

    Is the Tiger that difficult to change oil on? $200 is insane and seems worth the effort of DIY? Idk though maybe there’s another reason you have to have it done?

    Any particular reason you're having the dealer do the oil changes? Or is that just to do an annual service and have the dealer service record? My Triumph dealer charge closer to $300 for an oil change, which is just ludicrous. I've done it myself every time after the break in service.

    • @FTAAdventures
      @FTAAdventures  8 місяців тому +1

      I didn't do this one because I wanted the service reminder reset. I'll be doing my own going forward.

    • @newenglandscrambler2262
      @newenglandscrambler2262 8 місяців тому

      @@FTAAdventures I figured. I do the same if it's all tied into an annual service visit and I'm not putting many miles on a bike in a particular year. The price stings though. It makes no sense that a motorcycle oil change atbthe dealer costs 2-4x what it costs for a car, when it takes way less oil and a fraction of the time. Other service fees make sense, but not that one.
