Hi, I'm a retired hairstylist from back in 1969 & when the shag haircut first came in. I was taught to razor cut & I didn't like the shag at first, but it grew on me. I love it now & taught myself how to cut with the scissors & I used the razor some like you did. I did hairstyling for about 12yrs at JC Pennys! It was fun. I miss it some. My health won't let me anymore at 73yrs. But I did love to cut hair, & I did cut my hair myself. You did a great job teaching us how to cut this haircut, very precise, & slow, you did it like I would do it. Thanks for sharing! 💇♀️💺☺️❤️🎉
My sister just cut my hair last night and I had her follow this tutorial. It came out so well and I'm so happy with it! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
Ha ha. Yeah, the clients called it "feathered" because as the blown-out layers fell back they looked like feathers. But "feathering" is not really a technical haircutting term. Still...we old-timers know what you mean, and rock the hell out of this cut. It can be as short or long as you want and it's a cute vibe in any length.
Yessss... nothing better than 80's layers & big hair. That look should've NEVER been out of style. Singers Taylor Dayne, Stevie Nicks & actress Heather Locklear all rocked that look very well..
This haircut is classic. You can make it as BIG or laid back as you want. I blow this out with a smaller round brush, twisting and stretching and alternating directions with my subsections, and it gives a beachy, modern vibe and all those kicks and flicks really pop.
Super excited! This is my regular style for 20 years. And then, I became very low maintenance, just let it grow until all 1 length and touch my hip line length of hair! Seeing this video, I want this style now at 60 years of age! TY!
Same way I've cut layers for 31 yrs..only I would really over direct the length in back over the top to save length and avoid the V. I use razor and shears. Love to finish with a dry point cut to avoid any lines. Which creates invisible layers. Over directing the length creates the same look only keeping length. I've been a educator as well. This is the standard that is a true layer cut. Tried and true cut. This goes all the way back to Pivot Point education. The degrees make all the difference in your finished results, and of course finessing the cut with texturing. Great job luv did exactly as I thought my students.
Nothing new under the sun. The only difference is the products we have now and how we finish it. It would be full FARRAH if hot rollers were used. Only three shapes in hair design. So, haircuts are just mixed-up techniques. The reason I razor cut is I can create the shape AND texture as I go, and don't end up having to do a second cut with all the texturizing.
Had this style in high school in the 80s. I would also get a perm that helped make styling time much shorter and made for even bigger hair 😄 I've always loved the shaggy bed head cut/ look.
@@StylesBySummer Go for it! The scariest think about it perm is the smell of the solution 😂 Seriously though you should try one at least once, I think you'd look fabulous! I'm sure you know this since you are in that line of work but just make sure to use the right size rods, making sure to stay away from the smallest unless of course you're wanting a big, bouncy, and fluffy afro! 😂😂 Body perms are great for a first timer. Good luck and hope you share before and after pics with us.
Except people highlight so much more, now, and it would be FRIED. It's perm OR bleach, really. Not both. I definitely remember the perm years. I still love doing them, though. They're fun.
So happy I can be helpful! I'm 16yrs in and never thought in my life I'd be doing a channel like this. Thank you for watching and enjoying what I post. Means the world ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is exactly the cut I want! (Maybe because I lived in the shag era) Maybe if I show this photo to my stylist she can duplicate it. Your highlights made the cut have more dimension. Fun video! Love how precise you are before, during and after the cut! A pro all the way! 🙌🏻
My boyfriend has really long hair and we both are really into the 80s shag, so we just cut each others hair usually ( as we both know each others exact likings lol). It was nice to see that even without any clue I’ve been doing it the way you show it here! Still I learned a lot here when it comes to sectioning and technique. Thank you
They just need to over-direct the hair behind the ear, and forward more, to preserve length. A true mullet has two distinctively disconnected lengths but also has the shorter in the front, and longer in the back vibe. This is a true shag shape, though.
The reason I love that haircut is I have curly hair and I can blow dry the top and let the rest dry naturally or I can dry it all and style it. S😅 I like that it looks good for a natural dry 😅r styling. You do a great job. I like the money piece too!!
Oh my gosh, this is sooooo CUTE!!! This is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen and I subscribed to your channel as soon as it was over. I’ve been a hairdresser for 25 years and I’m still always looking for new fun things and I love the way you demonstrate. You make it so clear and concise. I’m so impressed!!
Summer I love this cut, and I use a razor often. However I think this cut needs a smoother cut with scissors, and then “shag it up “ with a razor just like you did, especially if the clients hair is already a bit rough. The layers should lay pretty, and then textured. You are a good teacher because your instructions are very clear and visible! Thank you, Darcy
I loved cutting with both. My favorite razor was PM the twist. There are many different types of razors. Just like scissors. 8 times out of 10 I used scissors to cut and razored the ends.
I love this cut! I was a teen in the 80’s so am very familiar with it. I am looking for a new style for my long one length hair, so I might go for it. Will this cut work if you have wavy almost curly hair? The only thing that wasn’t my favorite was the long piece in the back. I understand it goes with the cut though. Great job! I love watching your haircut videos.
I had this style in the early 80’s. Looked great at the hair studio, but I have a strong cowlick on one side that curled my hair into my eyes. So, I went for long and straight after that. No one ever seems to talk about cowlicks, and so many people have them.
I actually fixed a cowlick on the front of my head by using those clip Barrett's she uses to hold the hair. I'd put it in my hair at night after the shower, pulling the hair in the opposite direction and sleep with it like that. It took about 6 1\2 months but it worked.
YES! THANK YOU, Summer for doing this cut! Just followed your"LONG HAIR | CURTAIN BANG TUTORIAL | LAYERS | FACE FRAMING | HOW TO" video last week on myself. This is my next step 🥰😍 BTW, my fine hair clients are loving the Moroccan Oil products you reviewed!
Hi summer I resently had my hair cut I had it really short which I love it was awsome the hair dresser was great she listened to my concerns on what I wanted done
I have worn a shag all my life from really short to a long shag I like ur shag i would shorten the bags a tade oh and I use my razor so much love it good job !
I'm in master Barber of 34 but occasionally I love to do women's hair and this is nice that you do these because it is like a little refresher reminder😊
This is helpful as you talk about using both razor and scissors. I cut my own thick, fine, straight, heavy hair and just tried the shag using just the razor but feel it also needs scissors. Will try again, adding more texture. Otherwise my hair is like a hot, heavy rug! Will save and rewatch. Thank you!
I love to do combo razor and shear! But I do love razor cuts! They are softer! I'm 70 years old and retired! I did hair for 25 years and loved it! You do a fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating!❤❤
Great job. I love using all the cutting tools. I usually start out with shears then all depending on hair texture I'll use texterizing shears and razor.thank you for sharing ❤😊
Too bad you are not in Montreal Ive been looking for this look for ever seeing is beleiving you are awsome God bless you if you are ever here i would love to know in advance have a great night!!!!

Hi it's Susan from Ontario Canada love love that cut an have wanted it forever the trick is finding some1 who can do the cut proper. Thanks for sharing.
Great haircut.... my hair has become very thin on top and sides . My hair is fine, straight, and colored. I like big hair. What's the name of the product and brand for lift and blow out? Oh, I am 73 years old and not in the Best of heath.
The "V" Shape in the back is the most hated part of this cut. Speaking from girls everywhere in the 80's. It took 15 years to grow back out, especially if, like most of us, you have long hair!! The way to avoid this is sectioning off the back and cutting it separately, and just very long layers in the back (layers within 2 inches of the back only) which my stylist just did for me, and it looks fantastic!
The one I used in this video I don't purchase that often because it has gotten so expensive. This one has decent thickness but the ends get thin so you have to remove some length first amzn.to/49uAPgR This is I feel is best thickness and easy to comb the hair and lays well for the prices point amzn.to/49wFor2 I also will used ones from Pivot Point which have great quality of hair. They usually run $80+
I love this haircut. No one has ever been able to do this haircut for me. I have medium course hair and lots of it and it always looks choppy when I get it cut. Do you have any advice for me to give to my hairdresser? Thank you for your videos they are awesome.
I don't cut hair. I have very thick. I love this cut . I always had my hair with layer with V angle in back. Put hot rollers. Today it's so hard to find great hair dresser. I'm in New Jersey. I miss Elizabeth Arden in King of Prussia in PA . Steve was excellent hair dresser. Your are amazing teacher. Great job!!
My best suggestion is to just ask someone whose haircut you really like, even strangers appreciate compliments and are usually happy to share recommendations. Then book a consultation first and bring this video with you to discuss what you like and what will and won’t work for YOUR hair. If a stylist isn’t willing to do this chances are they’re not going to be the right stylist for you!
Love the way it lays,,I needed you about a week ago when I had my hair cut,,It was long now way shorter,,I ask for a long shag, layered hair cut ,YOU ARE AWESOME ,THANKS😁👍👍👍😇
That is a beautiful haircut and you took your time! You have such skill and your technique is superb! I don't like people cutting my hair but I would let you. I would love it if you would do a video with super long hair like mine. I have hair down to my butt, it's wavy, I would like to frame my face but keep length and fullness, i like to pull the back to the front also at times to see all the waves around my face, and other times I like to wear it all down in the back. I like to wear it up and see all the face framing. There are not many videos teaching these techniques, but the number of people with super long hair are growing. Love Love Love your haircuts! Such talent!
This is funny how I came across this video.. I am about do my first shag for a wig client of mind on curly texture. This was helpful. I’m not a cosmetologist but this was very thorough and gives me a good place to start
I cut my own hair into a shag and I have NEVER had so many compliments about it.
I love shags, always have. I wish I still had a lot of hair. Mine’s too fine now.😢
Do you have to style it for it to look good?
I'm 57 yrs old and rocked this cut back in the early 1980s. Back when I had beautiful thick hair.

Back in the 80's my Grandmother took me to a Salon and I asked for my hair to be Feathered and Layered. That's what this cut reminds me of.
I think they called it layering back then
I like the razor cut better but some shear cutting is fine too. 😊
Ha ha. Yeah, the clients called it "feathered" because as the blown-out layers fell back they looked like feathers. But "feathering" is not really a technical haircutting term. What a lovely compliment!
I love all retro hairstyles- they required lots of hard work but compared to what we have now-.........MASTERPIECES!
They’re a wash and go style with minimalist of care for any shag and why they were so popular.

🤣 I always say I should have been in my 20s in the 80s bc I love big messy hair! Never have done a perm because I'm to scared!
I still have a a layered, bed head look. I went and got a body wave back in June. I love it!
I had perms in the '80s and up until the mid-90s. LOL!

LOVE when stylists go in with a razor! I have fine short hair.. LOVELY TEXTURE!💞💯👑
I love the shag, I think it’s beautiful and I think you did amazing.
Luv the shag style....would like to see a short shag above the shoukder......razor cutting us my preference.
Really like your videos. Maybe consider showing how you styled this one also, so we know what to do to achieve this look
This is funny how I came across this video.. I am about do my first shag for a wig client of mind on curly texture. This was helpful. I’m not a cosmetologist but this was very thorough and gives me a good place to start
i have this hair style but i wanted to touch up the layers. this will definitely improve the overall cut. thank you so much for making this!
