My mum, who is a retired 80 year old hairdresser, used this tutorial to cut my hair into a shag. I am so pleased with the results, just getting to grips with styling it well with rollers. Mum said the tutorial was excellent and super easy for her to follow. Thanks again!!
I did hair for many yrs, but it has also been many yrs, since in a shop or doing it on a regular basis. Almost 50 yrs ago, (eeek lol) when I was 8 y/o, I wanted a shag so bad, but they told us they wouldn't do it, bcuz my hair was stick straight..I was so bummed! Lol Now, it's just been long, about middle of back now, as I just took about 3 1/2" off of it a few mins ago, but since it started graying, it got wavy, and I could totally do it now! 😀 I have longer bangs already, that frame my upper face, but it's fine, and has thinned out some, so this is perfect for some body around my crown & sides, as I have a small head & slim face, so it would also help to add some fullness in my face, w/out having to take really any more length off. I've done my own hair for the last 12 yrs @ least, and I need a change! 👍 You made it so easy to understand & follow, especially since I've done it so long, that I'm pretty sure I can do it myself as well, as I don't trust many ppl..why I got into the business!! Lol I made it a priority to LISTEN to what ppl wanted 💜 It will be a drastic change, but I'm ready! Thank you for making these videos! You have a talent to teach! Take care! 🙋
i cant thank you enough for creating this straight to the point video. Simple and easy to understand. I get really frustrated at the tutorials that are 45 minutes long for no good reason
I’m a hairdresser that doesn’t work in the salon anymore, so I don’t know anyone to trade services with. I started cutting my hair at home, because I was tired of paying $40+ for a haircut and then having to go home and perfect the cut at home, because they never cut it right. I tried using your method last time I cut my hair, because I wanted an easier way that wouldn’t be so tedious. It was the most beautiful, flattering haircut I’ve ever had! I’m getting ready to recut it today and was watching to refresh my memory. Definitely saved this video to my favorites list. 🙏🏻❤️
I'm 62 and I've had the shag cut since I was 14yrs old,I have over the years tried different styles, most recently the bob cut,I tried to put up with it but it's a style that always looks perfect and neat, nor not for me like my hair scruffy and shaggy.
This was the hairstyle I grew up with. Farrah Fawcett kinda started it but Stevie Nick's, Ann and Nancy Wilson had it and every girl in my generation had this cut. Going forward a couple decades and I could NOT FIND hairstylist that had even heard of it. Try describing it... it's hard. Saying yiu wanted "Feathered Hair" was a start but... again that wasn't a descriptive description used in the hair styling world. When I saw my first video about the "Butterfly Cut" and the more complicated version "the wolf cut" I was so happy I cried! Not kidding!! I could FINALLY get my hair back to looking fabulous and i could do it myself!!! And so I did and it looks AMAZING??? I'LL never have to pay for a haircut again!! Thanks to All the people taking credit for this cut. Us good looking "Cougars" are gettin' our Groove back! Now if only Disco Bars would come back in style again, our lives could once again be PERFECT! ...Oh.. the Black Angus Restaurants had the BEST LIGHTED DANCE FLOORS EVER!!! They had mirror balls hanging everywhere! The guys looked so good in their 'Angel Flight" suits. They came in blue, yellow, WHITE like John Travolta wore in Saturday Night Fever!! 😎Oh I'm making myself cry here. I have SUCH GREAT MEMORIES from that decade! I wish we could go back! I'd trade in every computer, smart phone, Smart TV, Smart watch, Starbucks card, EVERYTHING invented in these past 40 years... to go back to those sweet, simpler times in a heartbeat!!🥹
Omg!! You and me both girl!! If only we could just go back for a short time!!! I miss those days so much!! I get lost in thoughts as I reminisce about those wonderful, simplistic times, when living was fun, and very relaxed. No crazy computers, or cell phones. Just the good ole days, going to concerts, cruising the “drag” in our classic 67’ Camaro’s, or any cool car for that matter. Cranking up the tunes of April Wine, Journey, Yes, Styx, Pink Floyd, Boston, and many many others. And I too had that Farrah Fawcett cut, as did everyone in the early 80’s. After graduation, I went on to the Beauty School for the 9-12 month program. I never finished tho because my brother was killed in a car wreck, and I just couldn’t go back. That was the only part of my life back then that I get sad about. But I know my brother, and he wouldn’t want me to be sad, so I’m a lot better than I was…and that was 40 yrs ago!!! Thank you Susan Martin for your post, and I’m so glad there are people out there that are still very much in tune with those great yrs.❤❤❤
@OliveYoo864 we need to meet each other. I think you'd be a great friend. ThisI've NEVER had someone respond to one of my comments like you did, ever before.! I'm Susan and I'm 65. I graduated in 1976... the Bicentennial wooo!! Not. They made us wear red, white and blue cap & gowns for our graduation and we were all SOOO PISSED! Our school colors were green and gold! And the gowns came with this stupid looking sash with a liberty bell on it. Nobody knew how or where to wear those things, so we just faked it! 😂😅 300 seniors had our graduation pictures were ALL WEARING THEM BACKWARDS!! They were supposed to go down the back of the robes. We all looked like patriotic Mr, T's coz we wore them with the gold bell hanging in front😂. It didn't matter! We graduated highschool!! Every thing you said made me smile! Check this out. Good bless the 60s and 70s. .. the 80s were OK but certainly not the same at all. We were in our 20s then... things weren't as cool and easy then. That was when we had to find jobs and pay for our own stuff! I was never a college girl. 🎶MEMORIES...LIGHT THE CORNERS OF OUR MINDS🎵 🎶LA LA DEE THE WAY WE WERE!!
@@OliveYoo864(Texas woman here) I know what y'all are talking about about too. And we had the olive colored shag carpet, wall to wall in our house. Some had gold colored Frigidaires. We even had an olive green mixer in the kitchen too. And people actually danced with partners then. Remember the disco balls that reflected a lot of . light on the dancefloor? Things were so much simpler then. We understood a man was a man, a woman was a woman. It's not that way, it seems, anymore though.
The Farrah flip. I LOVED Charlies Angels -- Jill, Kelly and Sabrina versions -- we had a "Charlies Angels fan club"! 🙄 My stylist, who went to Vidal Sassoon in the 80s -- they called it "the Shake" -- was the ONLY stylist in my adult life who "got" it. Like, where were the rest of GenX sytlists living in the 80s? How come none of them can figure it out? I have thick, wavy hair and those long shags work like a dream. Don't forget about Steely Dan!! ❤ I followed a video (ua-cam.com/video/OYeRvofjZF0/v-deo.htmlsi=F7oX7Z2AU7gIs9Cl) a few years ago and it's been great but I came looking for something less wispy. He explains this so well I may have to try it.
You’ve literally explained this easier than anyone has… almost every video is either exceedingly too long, or the videos sort of close to the length of your video are included with way too many steps… brilliant! Thank you!
A few months back after 2 years I went to the hair salon again to get a shag haircut and the hairstylist just ruined my hair, I'm excited I found your tutorial, I'm going to try and cut my hair ^^
I'm at work (at the salon) and needed a refresher for a shag, and I found this. It's different than how I usually do it but I tried anyway and it turned out BEAUTIFUL. 10/10 Just make sure you're still doing the extra detailing work once it's dry and it'll be 🤌🏻
We did this type of haircutting in beauty school 1971 Had a salon for 50 yrs. Even now in my 70's. I still use this on myself for different styles. Nicely explained 👌
I have been wanting to learn how to cut my hair this way myself. My husband helped me section, and it worked!!!! My hair is gorgeous. Thank you, you have changed my life!!!!!
Just did mine 5 mins ago and it turned out great. I’ve been doing this haircut since hairdressing school in 1988, lol. I kept my bangs between my nose & chin as I don’t do bangs bangs. I left my length which is nearly to my bum but gave myself lots of layers and angled it towards my face. I took very little off the back as I didn’t have much when I pulled it up for the center sections. I blended it with my razor knife, and used my thinning shears to take out any of the straight edges. I point cut my bangs as they were still really long and pulled right over to left eye & left side over to right eyebrow to cut it to get the angles I wanted.
Just did this cut and couldn't be happier!! I had straight hair down to my hips that was cut straight across. Followed this video and just made a few adjustments for the length of my hair. First round was at about my check bones and did two more sections in the back that I pulled forward the same, but cut one at my shoulders and one at the end of my ribcage. Then I went back and made a few pieces around my face about the length of my nose. Looks like Nicole Kidman from the movie practical magic 😍 Thank you for the easy and well executed tutorial!!!!
Two more sections from the back? From the back section? How did you divide it? You pulled it to front and cut it square like the rest in the beggining of video? If you wouldn’t mind I would love to add you on some socials so you could send me a picture there (visual representation might be better than talking, especially since I’m not a native speaker). I would appreciate it so much, it’s my dream to finally cut my hair, but since my hair is the same lenght yours was, I’m afraid I might mess it up looking at tutorials of much shorter hair 🥺♥️
Just did this on myself and it's SO cute. I went a little longer than my endplan, and I think I'll go back and shorten my bangs after I see how it sits in a few days. Thank you!
I was so excited to see how easy this seemed to be..I jumped up and immediately went to do this on myself. I was instantly happy with the results! I have wavy/curly hair naturally and have always tried to achieve this in other ways without the exact results I wanted, but NOW! I have. TY for this!
Awesome - thanks for this. I agree that sometimes the back looks too thin and wispy. I also think sometimes it looks like a bowl cut from the ears up - too heavy & separate. But I like this cut. Thank you again.
I tried to cut my hair like this, and it turned out really well! I’m not experienced in cutting hair at all but video was really easy to follow so thank you‼️
My mama went to cosmetology School in the mid-60s and this was a haircut that she learned and used often. My sissy wants to get one now and it seems like a lot of hairdressers just don't know how to do it. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen on this! I’m a former hairdresser but it’s been a long time and I never learned how to cut my own. I was able to do this on myself with success. Thanks so much-I love supporting my stylist but I pay so much for color, I appreciate the savings of cutting it myself.
Scared to go back to a salon. I had them put a perm in my straight as a board virgin hair and they burned it. It broke off in the front and was frizzy in the back. It was a mess. I just went for it having never cut my hair on my own and it worked. Might not be exactly even but it is cute....thanks
Thank you for this video and instruction - I live in a rural area and don't have access to a reliable hairstylist. This was so easy to follow and I am thrilled with the results on my wavy, typically unruly hair. Thanks again!
I would love to see this! I have a growing out pixie. My hair is super straight. When my hair actually would grow, it was always in a shag. Now all I can get to grow is a mullet. So frustrating.
Omg thank you so much for posting this! I had been trying to find an easy shag haircut tutorial and wasn’t having any luck. This worked perfect!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this!!! I can’t wait to use this technique today on my client. Thank you for giving such clear instructions, every step of the way. I was a little bit nervous, but now I’m excited. Yay!!❤
would be cool to see one side cut square and the other side to be overdirected so we could see the difference between the two options. then you could just square up the longer side to make it match the other square side.
Thank you! I’m not one for putting my hair in a ponytail and chopping it off LOL! Excited to see a tutorial where you can adjust the outcome easily. Going to try this tonight 😍
Love this tutorial! I have used several of your methods successfully in the past! I’m wondering if you have a tutorial for a deep V haircut. Thank you!
I just need to say that I think you are a fantastic teacher, I enjoy your tutorials so much. You are a great talent, I passed my basic hair dressing course but I lack confidence in getting out there! I'm dreading the client who asks me for a haircut and my mind goes blank!
Just used this to do my hair (its down to my butt and i kept most of my length I took bout an inch of the ends too but, otherwise..) I took cosmo in high-school and used to love this cut and would rock it most of my high-school years but, it's been awhile tho so figured I'd use a tutorial as my safest bet lol...its not dry yet like, it's still damp.. buuut so, far it looks cute..
Wow I just need to get my haircut that way from somebody I can try to do it the ponytail but it would be nice to get someone to do that thanks for sharing🥰
i love the look of a shag but my sides are shaved (think super grown out mullet), would i still be able to do the sections with that side bit of hair missing?
I already have a lot of layers from doing the unicorn cut (pulling all of my hair to the front of my head in a ponytail and chopping) on my hair, can I still do this as well?
Just did this and thought I would be as happy as everyone else. But I absolutely hate it, it looks horrible on me and idk if I did anything wrong but i followed every step and i hated the end results so much. I've never regretted a haircut this much, I would actually prefer to shave it all off than needing to keep this while waiting for it to grow out. Ngl I'm in my grief stage with my hair (saved it for 6 years) and now it's all gone and I'm so fucking devastated. I fcuked up big time.
Awww so sad for you 6 years of growing 😱 the last time a hairdresser ruined my hair was in July 2019 since then I cut it my self with ponytail techniques (there are a few out there). This one looks too short but you must alway cut a tiny bit and then if you are happy with result you can always cut more of it but not too much though !!!! Don’t worry it will grow out ;) at least you didn’t paye a fortune and got a horrible result (you could have). So remember always cut a little bit 😉❤️
If you want to retain all of the length you need to cut a steeper angle so you either pull the hair further forward and cut a line that is diagonal towards the end of the ponytails or the over Direction as long as you keep the angle Steep everything should be fine
My hair was to my last rib. I was like okay lets do this, but I cut it MUCH longer than the video and wigged out because it was soo short after the first section. I am going to have to finish this after work. I look stupid currently 😂
My mum, who is a retired 80 year old hairdresser, used this tutorial to cut my hair into a shag. I am so pleased with the results, just getting to grips with styling it well with rollers. Mum said the tutorial was excellent and super easy for her to follow. Thanks again!!

The results of this really looked absurdly good for how absurdly easy it was after your great tutorial. Thanks so much.

I wanted this cut when i was very young. It's absolutely perfection.

Yes absolutely that’s what fascinates me about how there is no right way really
Thank you for this video and instruction - I live in a rural area and don't have access to a reliable hairstylist. This was so easy to follow and I am thrilled with the results on my wavy, typically unruly hair. Thanks again!
I can't find anyone around that can cut my hair this way. It's my favorite cut. I might try this myself.
Excellent tutorial!! Daughter is very happy with it and it was easy and quick!
Thank you so much! I was so scared I would mess it up but this tutorial helped me have a lovely shaggy hairdo
Wonderful glad it worked out for you
Wow! Great technique. My hair looks so cute. Thanks so much!
This tutorial is fire af. Just DIY cut my hair, and it looks fantastic.
Thank you. I feel like you made this easy to understand for people like me that do not cut hair.
This is my favourite haircut and I've been able to do it myself and maintain it thanks to you 💜xx
Just did a perm on a client that gets the shag mullet and it looks amazing. Such an easy cut with such amazing results!
Thank you!
I appreciate you defined it by the ear or with the ear being the point to part from
Glad you appreciated it DC
Thank you so much for this!!! I can’t wait to use this technique today on my client. Thank you for giving such clear instructions, every step of the way. I was a little bit nervous, but now I’m excited. Yay!!❤
This is the best tutorial for a shag. Thank you so much!
You’re very welcome glad you enjoyed it
Best tutorial ever!!!! I love my hair now 😍🥰 thank you for explaining this so easily!
Followed your tutorial today & I absolutely love how my hair turned out. Thank you so much 😊
Just did that myself and it turned out great! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
I just cut my hair and I am totally overjoyed - Yipppppppieeeeh! Thaaaanks so much♥
Planning on doing this to my own hair! I'm gonna do a Long Shag, I have 45inch so I'm 100% sure I'm gonna struggle + I'm gonna be doing Curtain Bangs
Just did this on my own hair and works great! The hardest part was sectioning my own hair with one hand while holding a mirror in the other lol
would be cool to see one side cut square and the other side to be overdirected so we could see the difference between the two options. then you could just square up the longer side to make it match the other square side.
Another fabulous tutorial. Excellent teacher. Thank you.❤️
You’re very welcome Susanne glad you enjoyed it all the best James
Thank you! I’m not one for putting my hair in a ponytail and chopping it off LOL! Excited to see a tutorial where you can adjust the outcome easily. Going to try this tonight 😍
I just made it and I loved the result! ❤ thanks!
Wow. That first section cut was awesome!
Thank you very much for your comment appreciate it
Honestly wasn’t expecting it to work but DAMNNNNN. Never had something work so easily
Thank you so much my hair turned out so good I love it!
Ah that was so perfect. Quick and easy!! Thank you 🙏
This worked brilliantly for me-thank you!
Love this tutorial! I have used several of your methods successfully in the past! I’m wondering if you have a tutorial for a deep V haircut. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I tried following another one that was so overly complicated and it stressed me out until I ran into yours
Easy and quick this shag haircut ...stunning result Thanks James for sharing..love it❤😍
Superb Frieda thank you 🙏🏻
2:02 is when the tut actually starts
WOW! I thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial!!!! Thank you!!!
Wonderful glad you enjoyed it thank you for your comment
I just need to say that I think you are a fantastic teacher, I enjoy your tutorials so much. You are a great talent, I passed my basic hair dressing course but I lack confidence in getting out there! I'm dreading the client who asks me for a haircut and my mind goes blank!
❤️ Im ready for it this 2023!
Love it definitely going to be using this technique rather than smaller sections
I'm a hairstylist. I'm gonna try this on myself lol.
Thank you so much! Thats possible to do at home at myself. I was trying a lot techniques, but yours seems the best!! 🙏🏼🌹👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😍
Irvine Rusk did a nice polytail cutting collection in the mid 90’s. I had a great VHS of it 😬😳🤣💇♀️💕
Superb Susanne I would love to see that
Yesss. Those were so fun to do.
Rusk was decades ahead of the times. Great haircuts and products. Wish I could find the old t-shirt from then. Mine wore out😢
I remember how special those VHS education tapes were!
😅😆
I'd like to get this haircut, my hair is wavy but not sure if bangs would suit me considering my hairline is pear-shaped and my face round!
saved me spending money on a salon! thank you haha
Just wondering if it will work on my curly hair. I'll try anyway!
Awesome... fave vid for shag! Thank you.
Thankyou for sharing James, another brilliantly informative video ❤️x
No worries Lauren thank you for your comment
@@TheLifeOfHair this is so nice! I'm really looking forward to the alterations for the Wolf cut... please do this video💕
Did you try it? Sounds like it would be a shaggy mullet, which can look cool! I had one when I was a lot younger.
Great job 👏🏻
Amo esta clase 😄 love love love! You are an amazing teacher.
Muchas gracias 🙂
Gorgeous cut.
Love the shag!! Thanks so much for your tutorials!!! 🙏🏼🤗
How do you do this if you start off with really long hair? Like to bottom of rib cage.
If you want to retain all of the length you need to cut a steeper angle so you either pull the hair further forward and cut a line that is diagonal towards the end of the ponytails or the over Direction as long as you keep the angle Steep everything should be fine
Thank you so much! that was so diy too... you rock cutting hair 2, dont let anyone say other, -d
Thanks again for perfect performance 👏 ❤
My hair was to my last rib. I was like okay lets do this, but I cut it MUCH longer than the video and wigged out because it was soo short after the first section. I am going to have to finish this after work. I look stupid currently 😂
James, that looks fantastic.
Beautiful!
Easiest I’ve seen. Going to share the video with my students. Thanks!
Wonderful pimp my ride thanks very much I hope they like it
formidable James , merci
