- This is just a short update outlining changes to my UA-cam channel. Don't worry, there won't be any alteration to the content or the frequency of the videos I produce but I have joined Google's AdSense programme and I am now monetising my videos. The reasons for this are discussed in the video. However, all the funds will be donated to Wilvos, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programme operating here in Australia.

Ads are so common on UA-cam they are not even noticed. Thank you for using the money to make the world a better place.

Oh, my! I had no idea how this advertising thing worked. Naive me - I thought UA-cam kept all the money. Mark, I will GLADLY suffer through the ads to watch (and learn). You are a National treasure. Thank you for all you do.
It's a bit of a minefield once you go down the pathway to monetising videos. The most curious thing was that Google had to send me an actual letter, in the actual mail to allow me to verify that I was actually the person wanting the revenue. It took about a month to jump through all the hoops but I think it's worth it in the end.

Mark has taken my advice exactly twice in the last 10 years. The first time was to rebuilt his spot welder with fewer turns, which I didn't describe clearly enough and ended up being at best a solid step sideways. But the second time is when I suggested he sign up for adsense and donate the money to charity, and now we get to look at all these adorable animals. And our dirty ad money is paying for it! Great success! Couldn't be happier.
Thanks for motivating me to take that step. Choosing the charity was a bit of a no brainer but I don't think I would have done anything unless you had made the suggestion to donate the money. Sorry I didn't mention that it was you who gave me the idea but there doesn't seem to be a way of searching UA-cam comments to find out who said what!

@Preso58 Ha, I don't care for the attributation, no worries. More of a... the last time I offered advice it was a waste of time, and it took me many years before I next had something useful to suggest to make up for it.
I really like when you show the wildlife of Australia. Here in the US, we don’t have some of the species that you do. It is a great thing that you’re doing.

Thanks for that. We visited Vancouver Island back in 2017. We caught the vessel named "Salish Sea" over from Vancouver city and were treated to a pod of Orcas breaching not far from our boat. Outstanding!

Excellent use for the money! We have a similar organization here in our part of western Texas, The Big Country Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. And they are only one of several. Now that we're in Summer the number of little ones has decreased. A big thank you to the folks at Wilvos for the work they do!

If anyone wants to help Mark and you have unlimited Internet, just put his channel on auto play with the volume down while you go about your day, it will cost you nothing and you won't have to watch adverts, win win for the wildlife! Or you can do like I'm doing... I'm in my shed building my bike and I brought the laptop with me. I've got UA-cam playing random bits and invariably Mark will come up in my feed so I have that playing in the background while I'm working on my project. Perfect way to spend a rainy vacation day IMO!!!
Thanks Jon. I think the revenue from this month is going to be somewhat higher so if that continues I will be happy. The ladies at Wilvos said they will keep me in the loop if they get any unusual animals into care so hopefully I will have some more content for the end of the videos.

That's a very generous decision. Australia's native wild life is under pressure and needs support such as this.
Thanks for understanding. I went through a lot of teeth gnashing and hand wringing before making the decision to monetise the channel. Donating the money gives me a clear conscience and I can continue making the content I like.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately there are so many worthy charities that can and should be supported but you just have to pick one and go with it. I have checked and all the payments made to Wivos go towards wildlife rescue. They have no paid employees or administration expenses so I think it is money well spent.

I guess I'm so used to getting ads on YT videos that I didn't notice that they started appearing on yours. I will happily watch all the ads without skipping to maximize the revenue for this great charity.

Thank you, for all you share! If I don't want commercials, and truly there are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many interruptions with commercials with UA-cam, I can get Premium. Sometimes I just stop watching UA-cam because of all the commercials after I could no longer afford the Premium service.
I have found that the channels that I watch the most have only a few ads. I think the worst offenders are the channels that simply sample other creators work and then repackage it with the maximum number of ads they can cram in. Creators like Stefan Gotteswinter, who I have total respect for, still have the minimum number of ads which is surprising since he has squillions of subscribers.

Absolutely fantastic cause Mark, great choice and yes, we (or at least I), really enjoy seeing your native wildlife - very different in many cases to what we have in the UK and quite unique in many ways to anywhere else in the world. Hope the channel raises lots of money for WilVo’s and their wonderful work continues. Your videos continue to inspire and will now help in a special way to aid those beautiful creatures.

Interestingly, we had that discussion about possums and other "urban" wildlife and why they tend to be nuisance. The consensus was that some animals adapt easily to urban environments (like ibis and cockatoos) and there are abundant food sources available. The dingo's on Kgari are becoming a hazard because humans want to feed them so the numbers of wild dogs around the camp areas condense and they lose their natural fear of man. Unfortunately, the possums think that your house is their house.

HI Mark, I have been subscribed for a couple of years now and have enjoyed all of your content. I live in Victoria and really love the little bits of wildlife footage that you show, good to see creatures other than what we see down south. Good on you and your wife, your garden looks fantastic.

Brilliant use of any revenue. I so utterly agree that your wildlife is a rare treat just to learn of. There is a similar service here in western Washington state USA.

In my view, the volunteers who look after our sick and injured wildlife deserve more recognition. I think that Steve Irwin did a lot to raise awareness about conservation issues. His zoo is only about 45 minutes from where we live and we actually saw him feeding crocodiles. It's a pity he isn't still around.

Thanks. My wife is very committed to the transformation of our garden and it has to be said that we have some "creative differences" on how it is to be managed. I like to mow pathways to keep some areas clear and she plants new shrubs along the edges of my carefully crafted walkways which means my mowing area gets narrower and narrower over time. But, you know. happy wife, happy life! 😁

Some years ago my wife, who is an educator, participated in a teacher exchange program and spent several weeks touring and teaching in Australian schools and then a few months later we hosted an Australian teacher in our home here in the USA. We fell in love with Australia and returned together for a long vacation a few years later. The diversity of your wildlife is indeed amazing and I can't think of a better use for your UA-cam income. I am an avid follower of your channel but now I'll enjoy your videos even more knowing that you are supporting a very worthy cause. Keep up the great work, you are a class act!
Thanks for understanding the goal. My wife and I have visited Europe quite a bit and we began to notice the absence of bird calls. We sort of take it for granted here and once you don't hear it, it's quite obvious. Mind you, the sulphur crested cockatoos can be a tad raucous at times.

Excellent idea! I watch so much UA-cam I pay the piper monthly so I don't have to watch the ads! I did not monetize my channel but may reconsider. Of course my little pipsqueak channel would yield maybe beer money at the most! As for taxes, you can bet your bippy that the government-- be it AU or USA-- is anxious to extract any bit of tribute they can! In the US we have 87,000 new IRS agents to support! As always, thanks for everything you do!
I can understand your disdain for the IRS. Our ATO isn't exactly on our Christmas card list either. We pay a 10% Goods and Services Tax on everything we buy except food but now that I am over 60, I don't have to pay income tax on my retirement savings. This may change now that I am earning some money from YT. Donations to charities are tax deductible though. Who knows how it will play out.

Ah yes, the "Vevor Effect". I have noticed that too and it's a shame that it displaces a lot of original content. I have been approached quite often to do those reviews and it's tempting but it's not something that I want to do. I made the mistake of agreeing to do one review on a diode laser and I only agreed on the understanding that I could compare it to my CO2 laser. The vendor was very reluctant and because of time constraints and conditions I don't think I will do it again.

Thank you for understanding. I must say I have a clearer conscience about accepting the money and passing it on. I understand why some UA-cam channels need the income. Tools and materials aren't cheap especially for those who are starting out or coping with family life. I am fortunate that I have acquired tools over a long period and my children are now independent. I try to keep my projects modest and I think that "keeps it real" as they say.

Great idea, and a worthy cause!
Thanks for sharing this video Mark. UA-cam makes vast amounts of revenue through the videos and as they introduced “premium service” they found that they were actually losing revenue, as the uptake wasn’t as high as they hoped. They tried to get around this by encouraging makers to promote goods and services within their content, thinking that we, the end users would accept this ploy. So they expected to collect a subscription and still force users to watch these infuriating adverts.
Hi Preso, you are an absolute genuine Aussie legend. Love watching your weekly videos and as a fellow machinist I appreciate the excellent content and your presentation. You provide a great educational channel that all old and new machinists / hobbyists get inspiration from. Keep up the great work and well done on donating your UA-cam ad monies to your charity.

I know what you mean! First time we visited US territory (Hawaii) we kept walking to the wrong side of the car when we went to get in the driver seat. I don't know how many kerbs we crashed into making right hand turns.

Thanks Paul. It was a bit of a revelation when a viewer suggested the charity option. Wilvos have a very small operating budget of just $8500 per annum so they have to rely on grants and that is a cut throat business. I hope my small contribution can help.

Very nice gesture Mark. Did you know that there is a Yandina in the Solomon Islands ? Its part of the sub-group of islands called the Russels Islands. Rather beautiful location; palm and cocoa plantations, white beaches and some of the biggest sharks I have ever seen clearly visible in the crystal-clear ocean swell.
I did not know there was another Yandina! I just checked it out on Google maps. The water is indeed clear and there are lots of rusty iron roofs and palm trees. My father was stationed at Guadalcanal with the New Zealand artillery during WWII.

w.r.t. the advertising. Here in the UK, if I watch your (or others') videos on my laptop, there are no ads, however, watching on either my 'tablet' or my smart TV, then a\ll the ads are there.
A bit irritating I suppose, but I just mute the sound when they're on!
Again, an excellent gesture, and yet another of your most interesting videos.

I do run an AdBlock extension on my PC but as you have found out, Android devices (owned by Google) won't block the ads. I wonder why?

Well that is a beautiful way to spend the money. It's unfortunate that UA-cam is so fueled by money that they cannot respect your wishes, however as you have stated, the money will now go to a great cause. In the mid 90's I had the pleasure of training in Australia in Queensland as a United States Marine. Seeing the native wildlife there was amazing. Knowing what your doing with the money will make it easier to sit through some adds.
Thanks for understanding the goal. We have very high extinction rates of native fauna and flora here in Australia. It is partly to do with the highly specialised species that rely on very specific habitats. Some animals cannot adapt to loss of habitat. Feral animals have also wiped out a lot of our small marsupials.
Cats and foxes are the worst but we also have feral pigs, camels, water buffalo, rabbits and the dreaded cane toad.

Just absolutely love this idea Mark! If the ads are going to be there might as well put them to good use. Unfortunately where I live in Victoria animal strike is very high with Wombats, kangaroos & Wallabies.
I remember driving from Tumut to Canberra and seeing lots of dead wombats on the side of the road. It was very sad as we had never actually seen a live wombat anywhere in our travels around Australia. It was only recently when we were on Maria Island in Tasmania that we got to see them up close.

Hi Mark. A wonderful gesture to a great organisation. Our wild life is disappearing more and more every day due to greed of councils and property developers. The funds will help save those caught up in land clearing that developers state no wildlife was found in their survey reports. .
I agree. We have had a shameful situation quite close to home where a property developer has cleared a site of a stand of she-oak trees which are the almost exclusive feeding tree for a group of glossy black cockatoos. The developer got around the environmental report by saying that they would plant "offset" trees in another location. However the land they have access to for the offset planting is heavily polluted and an old dump site. The trees will take many years to mature and bear the cones that the birds feed on. A local boy was fighting to have the development stopped but the excavators moved in regardless and the site is now completely bare. The development was for an aged care facility and you would think it would be feasible to leave stands of trees so that the residents could look out their windows and at least see a beautiful bird in a tree. It's sad that the birds will probably die or move on to unsuitable habitat but it's also sad that the elderly residents will stare out their windows at concrete and brick walls.

Hi Mark. Like you, but for different reasons, I choose to not have ads or be monetised ever (even though my channel is small). I have great respect for you but now you have taken that to another level. Likewise I like on acreage in SEQ and try my best to encourage plant growth and animal development (even those pesky danger noodles) but mostly birds. Your choice of charity is a sound one and congrats to you and I hope they can support the local wildlife even more. You are an inspiration in many ways. Cheers ❤❤
Thanks. It has taken me a while to get used to the idea of a messy garden but some of the native grasses are now displacing the weeds which inevitably grow when we stopped mowing some areas. We get the occasional whip snake and some red belly black snakes but the harmless keelback is the most common species we have seen. Interestingly, they can tolerate eating cane toads. Monetisation took a lot longer to go through than I imagined it would. I somehow thought it was just a case of ticking a box but I guess it took a month to get it all completed.
