  • Having a working clock in the workshop is a good way of ensuring marital harmony, especially if deadlines are issued for activities that occur outside the workshop walls. This is my attempt to make a large, clearly visible, lathe related and decorative clock.
    If you are interested in obtaining the artwork for the Colchester Lathe Logo you can download it for free using these links. www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/kv8qr8...
    On image is in bitmap format, the other is vector format.
    In this episode:
    Map update
    Laser cutting and laser engraving the digits
    Chemically etching aluminium using Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda or Lye)
    Clear powder coating
    Shortening the minute hand
    Final assembly
    Thanks for watching.
    Cheers, Preso

    I use a lot of epoxy and I've found that a short length of wide masking tape on the bench is an excellent mixing palette. When you are done you can just peel it up and chuck it out. Much better than chucking out a bit of scrap galvanised sheet!

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  5 місяців тому +1

      This probably sounds wasteful but I have a LOT of that scrap sheet metal. When I was teaching we had a storage area for all the offcut sheet stock left over from cutting up class lots of material for sheet metal projects. It was common to have to cut up 50 pieces all the same size which meant that there was always small pieces left over. I would bring home the small pieces as it usually got thrown out at the end of the year. So, the masking tape is actually more expensive than the scrap sheet stock. I do clean off glue residue from the sheet metal and I can use both sides so it's not a total loss. But I will certainly have to find an alternative when I do run out of those little bits of sheetmetal.

      Mark

    Nice clock Mark! My dad got into a clock making binge back about 25 years ago. He had access to a dye sublimation printer at work and would print all kinds of clock faces, then buy a cheap 8" clock in Wal-Mart, then glue the printed face over the one the clock came with. He did HUNDREDS of them. Good times. thanks for bringing back some fond memories.

    Yo Mark,
    That Colchester shop clock would be the greatest viewer prize ever. May I suggest the viewer with a Colchester closest to the Pacific ocean on the Canadian west coast. Yeh, I think that would be just the ticket.
    See you next year.

    Gday Preso, this clock is a true work of art, the clear powder coat really gives a beautiful gloss shine, it’s very tempting to get setup for powder coating here, thanks for all the fantastic content throughout the year and all the best for 2024 mate, cheers

      Thanks Matty. The powdercoating setup is something that I never regretted buying. I recently found an Australian supplier of a good range of powders too. Prior to that I was buying them from Prismatic Powders but they all come from the USA and the price doubles as soon as you go to purchase it.

    Greetings from Silicon Valley, California! That clock looks absolutely fantastic. Wonderful job. I used to etch my own circuit boards, so I shouldn’t be surprised, but it was interesting to me that the caustic soda bath didn’t undermine the powder coat. Can’t wait for next year’s projects!

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  6 місяців тому +1

      I had tried the same process using various paints but none of them could withstand the corrosive effects and the heat of the alkaline reaction. Powdercoat is surprisingly tough but you do have to monitor how deep it is etching. Fine details can undercut the thinner sections. Ferric chloride absolutely doesn't work. You get a runaway exothermic reaction far more extreme than sodium hydroxide. I know because I tried it!

    Hi Mark. I'm a big fan of your videos. I used to watch you from Los Alamos New Mexico but today I'm watching from a small town called Big Timber Montana. Anyway, I thought your issue with the super glue was pretty funny because I used to do quite a bit of assembly of laser cut parts in New Mexico where the humidity is super low and I would have the exact opposite problem! We had to breathe on any parts that received super glue to get them to set chemically. Funny how changes in geographical location bring different problems for the same methods.

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  6 місяців тому +1

      Now that you mention it, the humidity was off the charts the day I was trying to bond those parts with the cyanoacrylate. I had completely forgotten about the bonding properties of that stuff and the link to moisture. Interestingly, we watched Oppenheimer on Christmas night. New Mexico to the max!

      We had a Dashin lathe at school which was the Taiwanese copy of the Student 1800. Unfortunately it was thoroughly thrashed by trade school students by the time we got hold of it but I used it a fair bit and it got me thinking that I might upgrade to the square head student at some point. In my view they are far superior to the more modern Chinese and Taiwanese lathes on the market now.

      That sounds very cool. The only thing I know about Bonneville is that Burt Munro set the under 1000cc motorcycle record there and that it features in "The World's Fastest Indian". I visited his home town of Invercargill in New Zealand and there is a hardware store there that owns all the replica and original motorcycles used in the film. It is still one of my favourite movies.

    I am in London - I'll have a thousandth share of the London pin.

    I think you just earned a medal for craftsmanship bravery… or skill. After ALL that work dip Al in sodium hydroxide (I don’t care how dilute) takes guts waaaaaay beyond normal. Gorgeous results, very impressive clock. Nice wildlife clip of the kangaroo and her joey probably some tax benefit being born in 2023. Have a wonderful 2024 I’m looking forward to your next projects.
    I’m sure it is illegal now where I live (probably go to jail) but take a something like a pop bottle, fill it with crumpled Al foil, dump in some sodium hydroxide, stretch a balloon over the top and watch it in-flate with hydrogen. When inflated tie off the balloon, tie on a note, and send it off.

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  6 місяців тому +1

      Ha ha, the last procedure you described is exactly what we did when we were youngsters. Evidently, my parents didn't notice that we were mixing up highly corrosive alkaline in bottles and generating enough heat to crack said bottle. The only difference is that we would tie an alcohol soaked string to the balloon and light it as we released the balloon. Hydrogen explosions look so pretty at night!

      My wife and I went down this deep rabbit hole when we saw the convoluted border in the area of Baarle. We did a lot of reading about the history and the current social context. Most borders here in Australia are either dead straight or they follow rivers. One thing we read was that there are different legal drinking ages in both Belgium and Netherlands. It must be a nightmare for publicans.

    It looks like you have a pin for Portland, Oregon, in the NW USA. Due to a surveying error a century ago there's a town in Vermont , eastern USA/Quebec, Canada where the border runs through several buildings, including the town library. It caused some problems when the border was closed during the covid-19 pandemic.

    • @Preso58

      We had a similar issue here on the Gold Coast. The Queensland/New South Wales border runs right through the centre of the CBD. People who lived on the NSW side were prevented from walking 100 metres to take their kids to school. I can understand why borders are important but common sense doesn't always prevail.
