You know it's not often that two of the highest grossing films of a year are animated movies. But that also shows that audiences are taking animation a bit more seriously now. So I can't help but to congratulate Mario and Miles Morales for being the stars of last year alongside Barbie and Oppenheimer.

For Trolls Band Together at least take into account that part of the movie was meant to send a message to very young viewers that family is extremely important and are inseparable. Don’t just judge how much money it made or the plot, take a look at the audience reviews, what it feels to see the movie in person and how it impacted younger audiences since it was made more for them than for you.
*Fun fact Trolls Band Together is rated higher by the audience than Wish. *

As great of a year as this was for animated films, it's also one of the most depressing for me...
Both due to one of my very favorites of the year being somewhat tainted by a toxic production history, AND due to the centennial of one of my favorite studios going terribly wrong (and I'm not even talking about my own thoughts on that film when I say that because I DID like it too). 😢😭
Again, I love that animation is thriving more than ever, I just wish it didn't happen at the expense of Disney (or the well being of animators for that matter)... (and screw the haters who route for Disney's misery and call us shills)
Edit: While it was kinda shocking to see Nimona at #1 here instead of Across the Spider-Verse, I will say that the way it went against all odds and still came to life (AND came out as good as it did) IS possibly one of the most feel good stories in animation history, giving both the movie and Blue Sky the storybook ending they truly deserved. 😊

    • @e1iteyoshi998
      @e1iteyoshi998 4 місяці тому +6

That's true. Across the Spiderverse was marred by a terrible working environment that the creators refused to acknowledge and instead gave a simple "proud of message" making another reason why i hope that the next film gets delayed for as long as it needs to.
Also hate to say it, but Disney has no one to blame but themselves for the way they struggled in 2023.

    • @disneyfan8719
      @disneyfan8719 4 місяці тому +5

@e1iteyoshi998 I know it's mostly their own fault, but still, they don't deserve this much hate when in practice, they're no different than any other company.
Disney Animation and Pixar especially don't deserve this as I feel they got completely screwed over by Chapek and maybe even Iger to an extent even if the latter tried to help them lately (AND saved both of them from oblivion when he first took over decades ago no less).

If there's one thing i would say about this new upcoming Garfield Movie is that, it's great to see Mark Dindal returning to direct an animated movie. I hope it will capture the great sense of charm and humor like Mark's other films like Cats Don't Dance and The Emperor's New Groove and not a recipe for disaster like Chicken Little.

    • @hunterolaughlin

Chicken Little is one of those cases where I don’t blame the director (Mark Dindal) one bit for the movie turning out as bad as it did. Mark’s original idea for Chicken Little sounded like a really good movie. Maybe not amazing, but it had the potential to be one of the better Disney animated films of that time.
But alas, those darn executives just couldn’t let him make the film how he wanted, and the executives just wanted a movie that could rival Shrek. And that is why I consider Chicken Little to be the worst Disney animated film.

In terms of animation, 2023 had some high points and low points from certain animation studios. With some making a grand comeback, some made forgettable projects, and some that are still enjoyable but underwhelming. My personal favorites are from Sony animation, Studio Ghibli, pixar, and formerly blue sky studios. But I definitely will say 2023 was the most ambitious year for animation.
But in 2024, while there are some interesting projects to look after, I feel like it’ll be Dreamworks animation year. Not only because they’re releasing 3 animated movies that look pretty interesting, but it’s also the studio’s 30th anniversary. So maybe this’ll be a redemption after 2023.

I always saw 2023 as a turbulent year for animation, due to the big strike that happened in Hollywood, but after reminiscing of these films, I have a lot of credit to give to the people who made some of the best that this year had to offer. 2023 was quite a year, and here's to 2024 being another awesome experience.
On a personal note, while I'm bummed that the Super Mario Bros Movie was listed as an honorable mention, I'm glad that you acknowledged Wish and Elemental as some of the best of the year (I was quite surprised to see them tied for the same spot). While they may not have been the best from Disney or Pixar, they're still a lot of fun and enjoyable in their own right. I certainly had a great time watching them both in theaters. And yeah, I don't care what any haters have to say (or some of my colleagues who were too judgmental to give Wish a chance), but Wish was a good movie in its own right, and here's hoping things change for the better for that film in terms of its reception. Here's also hoping that Disney has a better year in 2024. The company could really use it.

Not only would it be the cherry on the top of the film's crazy journey but it is also a great way to honour Blue Sky by finally giving them a win for a year. Also, I figured he'd use that clip for the post-credit scene. 2024 looks like it'll be another good year for animation, my most anticipated ones are Orion and the Dark, Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, The Garfield Movie and The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. Just a few notes for 2024. This looks like it might be another big comeback year for Dreamworks and there's a good chance that the Walt Disney Animation Studios film for this year might be delayed because it's been reported that it was removed from Disney's release schedule.

People nowadays are being way too generous to the Trolls franchise especially Band Together. I don't understand why people keep defending these god awful movies. I am not a big fan of these movies its just DreamWorks showing off pretty colorstyle visuals and random autotune pop songs instead of focusing good script and well developed complex likable characters. The fanbase are extremely toxic and delusional just like the Star War fanboys. Trolls are considered the worst generic bad kid flicks that depicts the stereotype of animation as generic kids genre instead of art form. I still considered Trolls Band Together the worst animated film of the year and it should have have gain hate and backlash than a Disney movie.

A "perfect" year would qualify as having NO BAD ANIMATED FILMS in a given year. Sadly, that's never going to happen. In a single year that there's no bad animated films is the day pigs start flying in real life.

Lots of hot takes in this video. While I agree that OVERALL 2023 was a great year for animation, I wouldn't say it was because it was "progressive". Most people are kinda getting tired of pointless politics in movies, with some exceptions that works it in very naturally. Doug Walker (say what you will about him) recently said something I agree with, "The messages are starting to overshadow the storytelling." If you have something to say, GREAT. But don't make that the number 1 goal of the movie. We as movie watchers just want good movies with good stories and characters, simple. That's one of the big reasons people have been overall turned off by Disney's recent output, they have been neglecting the storytelling and instead focus on making a profit.

If Mat can have hot takes about 2023’s animated movies, I got mine too. Yeah I’m on Mat’s side about Elemental and Wish but my score on both of them is 9/10. 🌟 There you go! Yes I agree they’re not perfect but they’re better than I thought they would be after hearing the reception from critics on both Elemental and Wish are far from great. My feelings on the two films are complex. I’m sure Disney’s animation team will rise again critically and financially and make they’re best films since Turning Red and Encanto. New animated series 2024:
    1. Primos: Uh oh, isn’t the backlash on the theme song not enough?
    2. Velma Season 2: Oh, No! Not again! Why, Velma? Why?!
    3. Hazbin Hotel Season 1: No pressure, Vivziepop. Just some high hype for a spectacular UA-cam pilot to finally become a legitimate animated series.
    4. Total Drama Island: You better give us a good reason for waiting an entire year to announce the U.S release of this reboot.
    5. SP Foodtipia: Looks promising, but I didn’t ask for a tv show based on this.
    6. Ariel: And I certainly didn’t ask for a preschool tie-in to a live action Disney remake either.
    7. Barney’s World: After I Love You, You Hate Me, I’m not sure about this animated reboot of Barney.
    8. Win or Lose: Wasn’t this thing cancelled last year?
    9. Exploding Kittens: Oh my god, this show is going to take the card game to a whole new wild level.
    10. Stu Go: I don’t know what to say about this one.
    11. Iwaju: A futuristic setting of African culture not based on Black Panther, must check it out.
    12. Rock, Paper, Scssors: I’ve seen a few episodes before, and I gotta say, this is going to be get really weird.
    13. Max and the Midknights: Is Big Nate not enough?
    14. Suicide Squad Isekai Anime: So many DC superhero shows turned into anime such as this.
    15. Iyanu: Another series based on Nigerian culture? Whew, we are going to have a treat with these two shows.
    16. Rick and Morty Anime: What’s with the trend of western cartoons getting anime adaptations?
    17. Mr. Birchum: After hearing about Chip Chilla, don’t expect me to watch this.
    18. Angry Birds: Mystery Island: Is Angry Birds even relevant anymore? Why won’t you just die already?!
    19. Lumi and the Great Big Galaxy: Is this another Steven Universe?
    20. NOXP: What the heck is this?
    21. The Worlds Divide: Better than the latest Hunger Games movie.
    22. The Howling Hoods: Hoodwinked! has some competition right here.

Here are my thoughts on the animated films I saw in 2023:
The Super Mario Bros Movie- An absolute love letter to the legacy of Mario! Even if The Owl House finale overshadowed in terms of animated media released that weekend, at least in my opinion.
Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse- PEAK! Hands down, one of the greatest animated features ever made! Can’t wait to see how it ends in Beyond the Spider-Verse!
Elemental- Not Pixar’s best, but I thought it was a great film.
Nimona- Absolutely wonderful and I am so glad it was finished.
Ruby Gillman- Enjoyable but honestly a downgrade in comparison to the films Dreamworks released in 2022.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem- Definitely the most chaotic animated film of 2023 and also one of the best at the same time.
Trolls Band Together- While not bad, this was honestly forgettable and again, a major downgrade when you compare to it to the films DreamWorks released in 2022.
Wish- While not the animated masterpiece I was hoping it would be, I thought people treated this one very hardly. Besides, Disney made much worse in the past.
The Boy and the Heron- A wonderful return to one of animation’s biggest legends!
Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget- While I did enjoy the film, I will admit that it was sort of a downgrade in comparison to the original classic.
Migration- A fun and harmless movie that is enjoyable to watch, but I wish we got more development from the some of the characters if the movie was a bit longer.
As for my thoughts on the animated movies released in 2024:
Orion and the Dark- Honestly, I have a bad feeling about this one.
The Tiger’s Apprentice- After Monkey King, I don’t think this will work out well. Also, I don’t have Paramount+!
Kung Fu Panda 4- Looking forward to seeing the Dragon Warrior’s return to the big screen! Especially in the year of the Dragon!
In Your Dreams- I have heard a bit about this, but I am going to need more information in order to know how I feel about this one.
Fixed- I’ve heard about this one for a while now, so I am down to see what this has to offer, especially that Gendy is making an R rated animated film.
IF- Yes, I’m counting this film here. John Krazinski is making a live action/animation hybrid of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends with Ryan Reynolds in the leading role?! Sign me up!
The Garfield Movie- WHAT’S HIS NAME?!!! 🎵Garfield🎵
Inside Out 2- Hey look a Pixar sequel that I actually want!
Saving Bikini Bottom- Sounds fun but I am realizing that SpongeBob is starting to overstay his welcome.
The Day the Earth Blew Up- The first ever fully animated theatrical Looney Tunes Movie?! And it’s in hand drawn!! Heck yeah!!
    Despicable Me 4- Skip
Spellbound- My reaction towards this is still the same considering that this coming from the same studio that made Luck.
Ultraman Rising- I’m intrigued but I do need to see more footage before I can give an opinion.
Transformers One- Oh, this is gonna be awesome, isn’t it!
The Wild Robot- Looking forward to see what Chris Sanders with this one.
Thelma the Unicorn- Well if The Bad Guys turned out to be an awesome movie, maybe the same thing will happen with this as well.
Untitled WDAS film- Honestly, there’s a good chance we won’t have a Disney animation film this year.
Untitled Wallace and Gromit film- I am excited for a new adventure with Aardman’s Oscar winning duo, although I hope they find an actor sounds like the late Peter Sallis.
That Christmas- Let’s see if this has the potential to be added among the Christmas favorites that we revisit every holiday season.
The Lord of the Rings War of the Rohirrim- Of course, it is not going to top the original trilogy but it could be better than some of the Hobbit films and especially Rings of Power.
Mufasa The Lion King- That sounds like it would be an amazing movie! If it were a prequel to the original 1994 animated Disney classic we all know and love!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3- This is gonna be awesome, I can feel it! But please have the rumors of Jim Carry not coming back be false.

If I had to say anything positive about 2023 it would be that the year's animated movies were mostly amazing and great all around. From The Super Mario Bros movie making a billion dollars, Spider verse telling a great compelling multi verse movie, Elemental was a nice little love story & Nimona being a thoughtful breakthrough film for the LGBTQIA plus community to the turtles coming back strong and ending the year with Studio Ghibli's best film in years and a return from a master artist. I've loved some of the film's on this list and even with the few not so good movies I had a good time with animation last year. Hopefully 2024 will be another good year as Kung fu panda 4 looks to be awesome and can't wait to have fun with the Sponge again. Great ranking and video Mat.

Inside Out 2: I was a bit skeptical when Pixar announced a sequel to this film as I would prefer a sequel to something else like Luca. But after seeing the teaser and the ideas they are going to implement, I am a little curious now but I hope it will not be underwhelming like Incredibles 2.
Saving Bikini Bottom: A Sandy Cheeks Movie: As a SpongeBob fan, I’m a little intrigued.
The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie: This, along with Coyote Vs. ACME are my most anticipated projects coming from the Looney Tunes.
Despicable Me 4: Illumination; you were on a roll last year with your previous 2 movies, so I don’t think it is wise to celebrate that with a FOURTH Despicable Me movie.
    Spellbound: Blech!
    Ultraman: Rising: Will see.
Transformers One: Hope it is better than the Michael Bay directed movies.
The Wild Robot: Looks promising; especially that this movie will come out on the same day as my birthday.
Thelma the Unicorn: A little hesitant but the movie could prove me wrong.
Untitled Walt Disney Animation Studios film: Can you tell us what the movie is, Disney?
Untitled Wallace and Gromit Movie: HEY! Wallace and Gromit are back!
That Christmas: After Ron’s Gone Wrong, I’m open to what Locksmith has in store with this one.
The Lord of the Rings: I don’t know a thing about this franchise but I wish the best of luck for everyone.
Mufasa: The Lion King: This COULD be an improvement but I don’t know how this movie will turned out.

i dont know if your on tiktok or not but alot of kids, teens, and adults are praising trolls 3. it has great music, visuals and doesnt care about being overall serious nor have a special message. its just a fun filled movie that doesnt need to be taken seriously. sure other films were better but really the worst animated film of the year is insane. some kids dont want a movie filled with important substances they just want to be entertained and have a good time, and look, all ages are loving it. p.s pls dont come at me :)

I disagree heavily on Trolls Band Together. It’s become my hyper fixation for the past month and I loved the song choices and the love letter to boy bands. I will say the stuff with Viva and Poppy make no sense but I enjoyed her character and she’s not some twisted villain. Definitely enjoyed this movie more than the previous Trolls movies.

I completely agree! I was never a fan of the first 2 Trolls movies other than the animation, but I liked the third movie as the characters are more emotionally complex and relatable. Also, Velvet and Veneer are 1000X better villains than Chef! Their cover of Sweet Dreams and Fame reminded me of the Fairy Godmother's cover of Holding Out For a Hero in Shrek 2! Not one of Dreamworks' best, but compared to the first 2 Trolls movies and what Dreamworks was putting out during the late 2010s, it is a lot better! I was more satisfied with Band Together and Wonka than with Wish during the end of 2023!

Here are my opinions for the upcoming 2024 Animated films.
Orion and the Dark: Looks fine. Doesn’t look like anything groundbreaking like DreamWorks’ previous movies. I’m surprised that it will only be on Netflix, as if we were living lockdown all over again, or is made to be like a direct-to-video movie like Joseph King of Dreams or something. The characters give an ironic approach, though, like dark is good, light is evil. Like Pixar’s Day and Night on steroids.
Tiger’s Apprentice: Never knew about this one, but it does look beautiful. Still wondering if Hollywood will adapt Little Nezha.
Kung Fu Panda 4: Oh look! Po’s met his match! A reptile that serves as DreamWorks’ answer to Kevin 11 and Aggregor from the Ben 10 Franchise.
In Your Dreams: Wonder if it’ll be on par with creatures spawning from dreams that I draw the next day. Plus this Godly fellow has got a nice pad.
Fixed: Oh bollocks! Literally! I was hoping more adult CGI films would spawn after Sausage Party. Good old Genndy, eh? Hopefully, he will make this movie the dog’s bollocks, as opposed to a dog’s dinner.
The Garfield Movie: Not Garfield the Movie, but The Garfield Movie. As if they found it difficult to add much distinction between the live action movie’s title and its animated movie. Anyway, it looks cute and Garfield is one cool cat. Funny how Samuel L. “Mother Father Cocker Spaniel” Jackson is in this one and Chris Pratt, though not sounding as lethargic and monotone as the late Lorenzo Music, but it’s still a funny take.
Inside Out 2: This could be a sequel with potential. Surely Anxiety will have some allusions to Autism, based on how anxiety is one of the common traits in ASD, along with OCD and obsessions.
Saving Bikini Bottom: A Sandy Cheeks Movie: This oughta be a good laugh, plus it’ll be the 25th anniversary of our good under sea buddy Spynjbob Pantsgwar (Welsh for Spongebob Squarepants) here. Plus the gender swap lead comes away from the Spongebob Movie status quo a bit.
The Day The Earth Blew Up - A Looney Tunes Movie: A movie adaptation of Duck Dodgers, I presume? Wonder if Marvin the Martian’s got his Acme Doomsday device, or supposed Death Star copy to blow up the earth, or blow Daffy and Porky all the way to Moron Mountain with the Nerdglucks?
Despicable Me 4: Good gracious! What’s up with the Minions? It’s like they are love children of the Muppets and Pacman, but I guess it’s a transformations, possibly a new breed. But who’s the new human character? She a friend, or foe of Gru?
Spellbound: I’m in it for the creature design. What can I say, I design creatures myself.
Ultraman movie: Well, spew my guts and call me Upchuck. It’s the inspiration behind Waybig from Ben 10!
Transformers ONE: A CG animated Transformers movie you say? Well, this’ll be epic. When was the last time we had an animated Transformers movie? Since 1986, was it? Also, why not have Mattel do an animated film about Thomas, Hot Wheels, or He-Man?
Wild Robot: Love the look of this! It’s basically Iron Giant meets Lilo and Stitch. Which is a very fitting comparison, considering Chris Sanders is directing this.
Thelma the Unicorn: Thelma looks fine, but this dude creeps me out. Like a mix between Weird Al and the Freak Brothers.
Unidentified upcoming Disney Animated Classic: Christ knows. Maybe the credits of Wish will confirm it. Or maybe it’s the anticipated Zootopia sequel. Guess we won’t know yet, let alone if it’s getting released in 2024.
Wallace and Gromit (Upcoming movie): Yes. It’s been 16 years since their last film. They definitely deserved it! Woop woop. When I watch it, I may as well have some cheese, Jacobs crackers and branston, come Xmas. Also, I wonder if said antagonist will be a bigger threat than Feathers McGraw, Preston and Piella Bakewell put together?
That Christmass: …will give me my heart, but the very next day, it’ll take it away.
Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim: Well, slice my head off and call me Azogg! This was so unexpected and it’s gonna be freaking epic. I bet my parents would love to see this.
Mufasa: Seeing as the 2019 Lion King counts as an animated film, albeit photorealistic, Mufasa will most likely count as one too. Unless actual live humans intervene, which would somehow “restore”, as opposed to the status quo of the live action remakes.
That’s all. Should be a fine year for animation also. I hope.

    • @ashelygordon669

And Speaking of Lion King, this should be a big year for them considering it’s the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic and memorable Disney films out there considering it came out in 1994.
In fairness, I wholeheartedly agree both Elemental and Wish do have their own flaws but its not deserve the amount they received from critics and other people alike.
I want to ignore the Disney haters and I am not angry about the current state of Disney but it’s sad of what it’s been reduced to.
I still do love Disney and I do acknowledge that 2023 was a terrible year for them with multiple flops and losing millions of dollars in the process but let’s just hope that this year is better than we have gotten last year!!! 🥲🤔

  • @amirgarcia547

Overall, I’d say this was a very strong year for animation. While I personally thought Wish was mildly disappointing, I ended up enjoying Elemental more than I thought I would and it became a welcome surprise, Nimona a great movie that was thankfully rescued from cancellation, Mario got his fun and fanservice-filled animated movie to wash away the stink of the live-action one, the TMNT returned to the big screen with a sleek new Spiderverse-inspired, Miyazaki made his grand return with the masterpiece that was The Boy and the Heron, and of course, we got the absolute, unadulterated peak that was Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Which is not only my own personal #1 animated movie of the year, but one of my favorites from the year in general. To the point where I saw it in theaters *five* times, and with it being recently announced to be released in IMAX theaters again, I’m definitely considering a sixth.
I doubt 2024 will top it, since Beyond the Spiderverse most likely won’t release until 2025, and the only animated movie I’m looking forward to next year is Inside Out 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4. But at least this year ended up being a certified banger.👌🏽

I said awhile back that i thought Wish was an ok movie, but the more i rewatched it the more realized how much of a disappointment that the film really is overall. Playing too safe really ended up hurting it and on top of the questionable choices with the scrapped concepts and its villain it makes me wonder if Disney really didn't have any faith in it succeeding. I would've respected it had the film failed but took a risk with the original concepts, but instead it comes off as a film wasted by its own potential.

I always respect your opinion, but the Elemental and Wish comparison is a bit unfair. Elemental is a film made by an immigrant director and was based on his experiences immigrating to another country, and the other feels like a corporate product trying to masquerade as a celebration of Disney Animation, which Disney themselves have seemingly been sabotaging the studio since 2018.

I could not agree more with the best list. Admittedly, I have yet to see The Boy and the Heron, the rest I have seen, and I defiantly agree with their respective spots on the list, especially with Nimona being at number one, and the thing I love the most about the best list was the fact that both Elemental and Wish shared a spot, because I totally agree that those films have been giving unfairly negative receptions from the public. Yes, I agree that both Disney and Pixar have done better films in the past, but whenever I see post on social media claiming that these were the worst they've seen for those companies, I seriously question if they've even seen the companies other works in the past, because really? Elemental is worse than Cars 2? Wish is worse than Home on the Rang and Chicken Little? Hell, when people say that those were the worst of this year, I say the same thing you said in this video, "Have any of you seen Trolls Band Together?!" So yeah, I completely disagree with all of those thoughts, and am so happy that you feel the same way about those films like I do.

I gotta say despite everything that has happened in 2023 I would say the movies were some of the massive highlights of this year. Because Without them (At least for us), it Would've been quite a dull year in general.
Although I have to say this is the first time I've seen the list that I'm completely mixed about. Like If I had my list I would side with "Band Together" to be more appealing than "Ruby Gillman" and my general worst would either be "The Monkey King" considering what it has for an unlikeable cast or Sadly "Miraculous" As a fan of the series, it's a weak adaptation and it was made the same way as 2020's "Scooby Doo" movie.
As for what is the best, Easily the Disney Movies. They ain't perfect I know, But I did love what they had and I would change a thing about them since I really had a great time with them. Others I would've added is "Mario", which is Pure fun! The same thing to "Mutant Mayhem", and "Spider-verse 2" really gets how I feel about following the status quo, and "Nimona!" is Definitely one of my top favorites! Yet oddly I wouldn't say that the best at least for movies in general since I also would've added "Wonka" Paul King's know-how to make magic, quite a charming movie, and "Barbie" it almost follows "The LEGO movie", Maybe even Better for it is touching yet also pretty funny!
With all that said I'll be looking forward to 2024, hoping for a brighter future for everything and everyone!

I will continue to express my hope in every comment section where the video mentions Spider-Verse that the animators who work on Beyond will get treated with the respect that they deserve. Thoughts on 2024 Animated Films:
Orion and the Dark: Looks cute, but given it's made by Dreamworks after coming off of films like Ruby Gillman, I should expect this to be at least 'okay/passable'.
The Tiger's Apprentice: Hopefully a fun time; the poster looks promising.
Kung Fu Panda 4: Like when Toy Story got a fourth movie, I don't think Kung Fu Panda needs a fourth movie, but I'm still excited to see this one. Now I just hope it's better than Toy Story 4.
I don't know what this fourth one is, but it looks like a fantasy film and I'm always down for one of those.
Fixed: Is this the second coming of Sausage Party?
Garfield: As someone who loved reading the comics, I'm optimistic for this one.
Inside Out 2: All of my yes!
Sponge Bob 4: Alright, who's the barnacle head who wanted another one of these?
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A little curious...even though I didn't exactly grow up with Looney Tunes (unless Animaniacs counts)
Despicable Me 4: I like these movies just fine, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
I don't know what this movie is, nor do I know what it's about, so no comment.
Ultraman: Not a fan, but it looks like a funtime.
Transformers One: It's gotta be better than the Michael Bay films, right....right?
    The Wild Robot: Looks interesting.
Thelma the Unicorn: I don't even know what the book series is about, and I'm not sure how to feel about this one.
Here's to hoping Disney's 2024 film will save the company from the brink that Strange World and Wish had caused.
A new Wallace and Gromit movie? Sign me up!
    That Christmas: Looks cute.
Lord of the Rings: Well, time to waste nine hours of my life watching the Lord of the Rings Trilogy to get hyped up for this one.
Mufasa: The Lion King: On the one hand, it's be interesting to see Mufasa's origin story. On the other hand...it's yet another Disney live action remake.

(Part 1: Overall Thoughts on 2023 Animated Movies)
2023 was a mixed bag of a year for animated movies for me. Yeah, we did not get a lot of truly terrible animated movies last year that is in the same league as Marmaduke and The Soccer Football Movie, but a majority of animated movies are either disappointing or just decent. While there were some truly great standouts, it was a pretty mixed year.
My Least Favourite Animated Movies of 2023 (only counting the 2023 releases since my actual list also included some that were released some time ago. Also funny that in your 5 worst animated movies of 2023, they are ranked consecutively from 33rd to 37th out of the 45 animated movies I covered):
    5. Inspector Sun and the Curse of the Black Widow (10/20): A decent whodunnit story, but the animation is too uncanny unfortunately. For a movie by the studios behind Deep and the upcoming Giants of La Mancha, this was ok.
    4. Running Man: Revengers (10/20): Did not expect myself to review this movie, but it not memorable enough unfortunately.
    3. Mummies (9.5/20): One of my biggest guilty pleasures of 2023. Technically bad, but bizarrely enjoyable.
    2. Headspace (5/20): If you are looking for a good animated movie from South Africa, avoid this and watch Seal Team on Netflix instead.
    1. Rally Road Racers (2.5/20): Another Vanguard Animation L, even if it’s actually one of their better movies.
    Honourable mentions:
    Blue Giant
    Unicorn Wars
Little Nicholas: Happy As Can Be
    Mars Express
    Deep Sea
    TMNT: Mutant Mayhem
    Chang An
    Migration
    Wish
My Most Favourite Animated Movies of 2023:
    5. Elemental (19.5/20): One of the biggest box office turnarounds of 2023, and after Lightyear which is good but a disappointment, this was another heartfelt animated movie from Pixar.
    4. Nimona (20/20): A very exciting and action-packed animated movie with a well-realised LGBTQ storyline to boot.
    3. Suzume (20/20): Yet another Makoto Shinkai masterpiece
    2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (20/20): Despite the abuse and lack of benefits these animators and writers had to go through to complete the movie, this is still a mind-bending animated movie worth celebrating.
    1. The Boy and the Heron (20/20): All bow to Hayao Miyazaki. He once again proves that he still got it!

(Part 2: Thoughts on the Upcoming 2024 Animated Movies)
Because my 2024 list is super long (as I included a whole lot of foreign CG animated movies), here's my brief thoughts on each of them:
10 Lives: Heard it’s from the same director behind Al Aire, so this could be good.
200% Wolf: Surprised 100% Wolf is getting a sequel, but given this is from the same studio behind Rise of TMNT and Lego: Monkie Kid, let Flying Bark cook.
The Ark and Aardvark: Oh no, Vanguard Animation is getting involved in another movie??? Although, they are one of the ELEVEN studios working on the movie…
The Brothers Gruff go to Splash World: Where do I sign up???
Buffalo Kids: From one of the studios behind Mummies? Hmm…
Butterfly Tale: Not for me, I’m sorry…
Chicken for Linda: I need to see this movie now!
The Day the Earth Blow Up: I swear, if Zaslav dared to cancel another Looney Tunes movie…
Diplodocus: For foreign CG animated movie standards, this actually looks promising…
Dragonkeeper: And don’t you dare try to delay it, Viva Kids! It could be the only good movie you picked up in a very long time…
Falcon Express: Another TAT Productions movie, but this time it’s in the style of Die Hard? Yippe ka yey, TAT Productions!
      Fixed: Genndy Tartakovsky is back!
      The Geronimo Stilton Movie: HYPE!
Giants of La Mancha: Doesn’t look great based on the trailer, not having high hopes…
The Garfield Movie: Alright, bring out the lasagne…
Hitpig: Alright Cinesite and Aniventure, tell me more…
      IF: Looks great!
The Inseparables: Potentially another nWave banger… If they secure the release date for the Asian countries…
In Your Dreams: Need to see the trailer to see how I react to it…
Inside Out 2: Hmm… This could be very interesting indeed…
Johnny Puff: Secret Mission: Another Arctic Dogs-based movie??? Well, this could be my worst animated movie of 2024…
Kung Fu Panda 4: Haven’t seen the first 3 movies, looks interesting!
Night of the Zoopacalypse: Let’s see if Mac Gruff and L’Atelier Animation can cook properly with this one…
      Noah’s Ark 2024: ???
Norbert: I think that animation style appeals to me more than it should…
Orion and the Dark: This could get spicy for DreamWorks…
Robot Dreams: Yeah, I definitely need to see this someday…
Saving Bikini Bottom: Again, interesting on what Nickelodeon is doing with another SpongeBob movie…
Spellbound: If this turns out to be another Skydance Animation dud thanks to that creep who shall not be named…
Spermagedon: Nordic animated movies, ladies and gentlemen. Probably the most insane premise for any animated movie this year… (Also from the same animation studio behind Two Buddies and a Badger, as well as the aforementioned The Brothers Gruff go to Splash World)
SuperKlaus: Also from the same animation studios behind Giants of La Mancha. Not looking forward to it unfortunately…
That Christmas: Let’s see whether Locksmith Animation can find success with this one…
Thelma the Unicorn: Again, until I see the trailer, I will reserve my judgement.
The new Wallace and Gromit movie: Hype!
The Tiger’s Apprentice: This actually has potential NGL…
Ultraman: Rising: From the same director behind Lost Ollie? Sold!
Una Aventura Gigante: Definitely competing with Johnny Puff for worst animated movie of 2024, especially from a director as infamous as Eduardo Schludt.
The Wild Robot: It’s directed by Chris Sanders, so this is convincing enough.

Why would you choose Wish over Trolls Band Together?! Wish was a big disappointment for Disney's 100th anniversary, and a lot more people liked Trolls Band Together. In fact, I saw it in the theaters twice, and I loved it!! It feels like you only looked at it on a surface level! Trolls was fun to watch with the colors, music, story, and heartwarming themes about family, which is something everyone can relate to. Wish doesn't seem to have anything that people can connect to and the animation looks unfinished.

I still can’t believe that John Lasseter is still working in animation after what was revealed about him. I pity the animators at Skydance Animation, as well as Vicky Jenson for being associated with this creep.
I’m sure that Alan Menken and Glen Slater’s songs will be great, but other than that, I’m not looking forward to Spellbound.

1 Toy Story: Andy’s Room functions as it’s own little slice of reality and Woody is the one who holds power and sway over the group. He leads the meetings and is the one that gives the orders to the army men to investigate Andy’s birthday party so they can see exactly what toys he gets. They all eagerly wait on the other end of a walkie-talkie for the results. All is well until one last, secret present is revealed. It turns out to be Buzz Lightyear, and from there the film finds it’s rhythm and main conflict.
2: Finding Nemo: Nemo, Marlin's lost son, is an allegory for the stock market prior to the global 2008 recession, as it seemed it was growing up, it was snatched away in a moment of sudden madness. Marlin represents the modern left. In order to find his son (or, as the director truly means, to find his way back to economic prosperity), changes his behaviour, overhauling his thought process and travelling forwards into the Darkness.
3: Monsters, Inc: Monsters Inc. conveys the message that there is still hope in the capitalist ideology - that with the right people pushing the right ideas, it is possible for a non-exploitative relationship to exist between business owners and employees - even though exploitation is a concept that is endemic to capitalism itself

It’s tough for me what to say what’s my overall favorite but for now it’s Spider Verse 2 because of all the sequels I seen, this was an expert shocker! Like what did I just watch, especially after the ending. Nimona’s a great one too. Mario’s a fun ride and even Chicken Run 2 isn’t all that bad. The two Disney films of 2023 were a nice and enjoyable experience for me. However, I have yet to see TMNT and The Boy and the Heron. I’ll check them out since I’m interested. My most anticipated animated film of 2024 is without a doubt Pixar’s Inside Out 2.
