- It’s the dawn of a new review as I get to talk about Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. As it is the sequel to the highly beloved Chicken Run, I discover in this review that just because Ginger and Rocky’s last adventure was great, that doesn’t mean we needed a sequel.

Fun Fact: Crushed walnut shells were used to create road surfaces in the film, while the soil texture on the chicken village set was made from recycled fallen leaves from a leylandii tree outside the studio
I knew it would never quite match the excellence of the original, but while unnecessary, for what it is, I think it's pretty good. The stop motion is great as always, plus I'm just a sucker for Aardman's style of British humor and slapstick.

I think the original Chicken Run was a lot better because you knew the chickens had very limited resources so there was more tension when Mr and Mrs Tweedy caught them because their resources felt like a one shot attempt, and if they failed, they were stuck forever, awaiting their pie fate.
In DOTN, they have so much resources, they feel too safe and its like you know they're going to survive. I wish there was a more gritty take to be honest, and I wished there was less modernity than this. Like yes a bigger farm, but perhaps give Mrs Tweedy the bare necessities she needed to make her nugget business nearly successful.
This is technically 50s to 60s.

If there was a sequel Aardman should’ve made instead of one to ‘Chicken Run’, it would be a potential revival with ‘The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists’. Not only it would have less controversial miscasting and a similar direct-to-DVD plot, but it would have also been better than the last two cash-grabbing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean' sequels during the 2010 decade.

I 100% agree. I LOVE The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists (Aka The Pirates! Band of Misfits!). It’s my favourite Aardman film.
I think it helps that Pirates! was kinda open ended, it's a bunch of silly pirates having adventures, it actually works for more episodic stories, similar to Wallace and Gromit. Chicken Run was more a one and done story admitedly, you really need a meaningful new premise to go back to it.

I do like the symbolism of the daughter being trapped in paradise while the mother is trapped in prison.

It's actually because Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson signed contracts with DreamWorks animation in 2000. But since Aardman and DreamWorks stopped working together In 2007, they couldn't bring them back. Voice actors who could reprise their roles actually signed contracts with Aardman, not DreamWorks.

I love how 7 years ago, everyone would bring up "They need to make a Chicken Run 2!" when it comes to the original's movie's topic. Now here we are, if people don't like the sequel, they'll suddenly say "Who asked for a sequel? Hollywood is sooooo unoriginal"

Bella did a great job as Molly, in fact their performance was on par with the elderly cast

Growing up I always wanted a sequel to this movie to see what happens after they achieve paradise and for me at least this movie did not disappoint.
I’m a bit disappointed that Mrs Tweety didn’t die. The way she went out in the first movie was hilarious to me as a kid.

As much as i enjoyed the sequel, the original will always be the best one. Dawn Of The Nugget was pretty decent but just like you said, it was unnecessary. The first movie did ended on a very good note with everyone being free and happy, so i don't see why they would get another conflict. And honestly, ginger being an extremely overprotective mother with molly gave me ariel and melody vibes because just like ariel, molly is so curious about the outside world and wants to explore it, and ginger doesn't tells her the actual reasons why it's a bad idea, all she tells her "no, it's dangerous!" so molly thinks ginger is overreacting and runs away. Like all ginger had to tell her was "you see, humans eat chickens. Me and everyone else were prisoners in a chicken farm where this cruel human would kill us if we couldn't lay anymore eggs. That's why i don't want you to go out there. Humans could kill you."..... it's not so freaking hard 🤦🏽♀️
I cannot stand when parent characters never tell their kids the whole truth about very important things, like if they really want their kids to understand why this or that is bad, then they need to tell them the whole truth and reasons.
Yea. The one simple thing Ginger could've done, explain the trauma she went through, and it could've changed everything.

This is why I am glad my mom always explained to me and my sisters when we were kids about the dangerous things that happen outside, she warned us about bad people like kidnappers and many other kinds of dangers there are out there. Some parents need to stop sugar coating and accept the fact that their children must learn about the dark side of reality.

14:32 to be fair, she did survive falling from the plane that was like thousands of feet in the air, the over 100 degree gravy pressure rising, and her old pie machine exploding. So in conclusion, I wouldn't expect a falling barn door of all things to kill her

Incidentally with all the pop culture references to other movies, am I the only one who thinks the fight with Ginger on the plane could have been inspired by the epic fight to the death between Bond and Necros in the Living Daylights?
That may be so, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. After all, this is an animated feature, not a Wile E. Coyote cartoon. (Also, #ReleaseCoyoteVsAcme.).
I can highly agree that this sequel is not necessary since the plot has a lot of problems where it feels like Aardman’s equivalent to a direct to video Disney sequel. I did enjoy some of the humor, and the animation and action was really fun to watch. I would put Chicken Run 2 close to the ranks of Flushed Away where it’s not as legendary as the first or even the Wallace and Gromit films, but it’s at least ok for what is for. They should’ve kept Julia as Ginger honestly

The recasting of Ginger is even weirder as I believe many dubs actually DID use the original voice of Ginger, so why couldn't the original English one do it?
It floors me that they said that Julia's voice was "too old" but not only does she sound exactly the same, but in the context of the film, Ginger _would_ be older given she's now a mother to a preteen and an established leader.
Another continuity break from the original film: the first film ends with the island full of young yellow chicks. But the only roosters on the island are Rocky and Fowler. As a black-out gag to end the movie you don't think much of it, but they ignore that ending in the new movie. They could have explained that part as Rocky's nightmare before he woke up in the second movie.
The moral of this story #1: the next time you make a sequel that rehashes the original, make sure you find the right execution to make it stand out on its own

The moral of this story: Never ever recast the actors in an unfair way to treat to, especially Ginger’s voice actor’s age. And make Sure this story is connected to the original.

Anyone else notice the coincidence of Mel Gibson, who voiced Rocky in the first film and John Smith in Pocahontas, was replaced by Zachary Levi, who also voiced a Disney prince?
At least they got his nose right, or beak in this case I guess.

Totally, that was pretty harsh by Aardman of why recasting by saying her voice is too old, example look at Disney as they brought back the original Disney Princesses voice actress's decades later as they are never too old.

@@TheImaginator972 In fairness though, Disney HAVE committed the same stuff before. For example they turned down Paul Winchell for The Tigger Movie, with little explanation but a letter saying "Too raspy". Allegedly they did the same thing to Sterling Halloway when he auditioned to reprise Pooh in the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh series. I mean, I like Jim Cummings' performance as Pooh as much as the next guy, but yeah, that's pretty unceremonious treatment.
Hell even some veteran actors who DID reprise their work got it dubbed over later on by a younger actor, like Kathryn Beaumont in Return to Neverland or Phil Harris for Talespin.
Aardman should re release this movie on DVD and call it chicken run dawn of the nugget the julia sawallha cut with her voice dubbed in the movie no disrespect to the new actress who voice Ginger but when i first heard that she was replaced im on her side because she said that she can still do ginger voice. So i am on team Julia because i grew up watching the first chicken run on dvd.

My favourite scene was the super-long overdramatic reveal of Mrs. Tweedy. It must have taken her 30 seconds to walk down those stairs.

Another one of the few good things about this film is that, thanks to having to remodel the characters, it feels as if they came back after having been destroyed in the Aardman fire
Since this sequel isn’t going to offer an explanation for how Mrs. Tweedy survived the door slamming on her, I’ll offer my own:
She got a “Get Out of Hell” pass from a certain kid in an orange hood who’s always sent down there and uses his “Get Out of Hell” pass to come back to life and, in his mind, “since he’s used his pass so many times, it would be considerate to give it to someone else who had need of it”.
There, that’s my explanation. It may not be great, but it’s at least an EXPLANATION for her return.
Couldn’t mrs tweedy survive from a wooden door? Since wooden door is not hard as a concrete, which could kill her. My theory is that she somehow survived after being stuck in a gravy machine while it blew up while also withstanding the force of a falling wooden door after that.
Maybe she got super lucky and that wooden door didn't kill her on impact giving her a chance to return to her old ways in the sequel but now with evil bond villain gear.

I know that a Chicken Run sequel was unnecessary, but considering that we had Trolls: Band Together and that movie was terrible, it couldn’t been much worse.

I wanted to know about Rocky’s circus backstory so badly! There was such a good opportunity in the movie but it was told offscreen! It’s also like the movie forgot Fowler exists and that he’s some old chicken who saves everyone right at the end like he don’t fly a plane despite not knowing how to in the first movie! This movie was really fun to watch especially the 2D segments but it should’ve been written differently. Like at least have Molly KNOWING the chickens are dying out there but goes out anyway cause she wants to help them out instead of the typical “I wanna go out there” doesn’t help that her parents are too cowardly to tell her why she can’t leave.
It maybe An Unnecessary Sequel but I still like it
I just saw this movie last night and I absolutely agree with everything mentioned in this review. The original “Chicken Run” is one of my all-time favorite animated films, but that first movie was so well crafted and self-contained with a definitive ending, I never really wanted, let alone expected, Aardman to do a sequel. “Dawn of the Nugget” had some interesting ideas from a visual standpoint, but suffers from creative bankruptcy with its story that falls WAY too hard on tired family movie cliches. When people say this movie feels like one of the direct-to-DVD Disney sequels from the 2000’s, I can definitely see why (I got A LOT of “Little Mermaid 2” and “The Lion King 2” vibes watching this).
With that said, I didn’t hate this movie. It obviously could’ve been a lot better, but it wasn’t a total bore to watch, either. It did manage to keep my attention for the duration of its runtime, which more than I can say about most of the direct-to-DVD Disney sequels. It’s definitely watchable.
Personally, I view “Dawn of the Nugget” in the same vein as “Ghostbusters 2” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.” It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely a step down from the original.
And that's how we end 2023 with this movie. We can only hope 2024 will be a much better year for animation. Not before we get to the top 5 best and worst animated films of 2023 coming soon.
Guessing this will be the Ralph Breaks the Internet of Aardman where it's reputation gets worse as years go by

Well, looks like Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget didn’t get the AniMat Seal of Garbage again.
I would be very angry if he ever did give Chicken Run 2 the Ani-Mat Seal Of Garbage but luckily he didn't.
As a fan of Aardman, I really enjoyed this film!
I would say the problem of this film being unnecessary may be more on the team at Netflix than the one at Aardman.
Maybe I'm wrong, but in the end, I enjoyed it, and that's all I can ask for.

My feelings exactly.
I also sign that comment. I absolutely loved the first film, it was great back then and still holds up well today, Aaardman at its absolute best. So of course I don't mind a sequel, but then again, I don't think it's necessary. The first film was so good and let the story end with such a satisfactory conclusion for all involved that I simply don't think there's any need to tell the story any further. I can very well live with what I know from the first film and feel like any sequel would only make the story worse.
Aardman animation first movie debut Chicken run was a home run success that very few can have like Disney, Pixar and Studio Ghibli. The sequel isn't on par with movies like Toy Story, Sherk and Spider Verse but is still a funny good time that's well animated, some good gags and wit the studio is known for. Mrs. Twetty is basically Dr. No a James bond villain and it sucks that the original actress isn't the character again. Aardman did a DreamWorks here.
Honestly, I feel like this at best would be better as 30 minute special similar to the wallace and gromit cartoons, instead of a feature film. The plot can be fun and entertaining, but doesn’t have that same emotional impact of the first film and comes off a bit boring at certain points. The animation is still as strong as first film. The characters are now just one dimensional version of themselves, but I still like nick and fetcher in this. Also, replacing some of the cast, except for Mel Gibson, really didn’t make any sense. But I’ll give props for Bella Ramsay’s performance as Molly, who’s basically a chicken version of Hilda. It’s really a 6.5/10
At first, I was excited for this movie when I saw the teaser. Then, when the trailet came out, I was bummed that it was a genric "I want more out of my life than being caged up" and "Ginger isn't telling her freaking daughter important things to why she doesn't want her out there."
But, hey, I still like the movie.
Sorry to break it to you Mat, but my brother loved this film as well as the original. I personally loved it too. It even crazy when I had KFC while watching both films. 😜

Yeah, I'm in agreement. It wasn't bad and still had that classic Aardman charm and humor but, at the end of the day, it didn't need to be made. Also, I had no idea about Julia Sawalha (I thought it was just a simple recast) but hearing what actually went down and how Sawalha showed she's still got it, Aardman really dropped the ball here.
That's mostly a dodgy Netflix decision. Even if Sam Fell had confirmed about it, as if he told Nick Park (who isn't involved with the sequel, besides sticking up for Peter Sallis before retirement)
This sequel was announced in my best year of 2018.
I won't forget about that news ever since four years ago back in 2018, man its been years of waiting but it was totally worth it as I really enjoy Chicken Run 2.

Yeah, Aardman made a fatal mistake recasting Ginger's original VA cause of old age and not look over Zachary Levi's anti-vaccine post before recasting. At least we can see Bella Ramsey as a saving grace.
Oh god Zachary Levi.. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i remember hearing about how he joked about how Britney Spears should've still been in the c-ship.

I don't really mind that Mollie is basically just Rocky and Ginger's own Hilda.
Another case of “Ghostbusters 2 Syndrome.”
Where the sequel has its moments but the plot is just a carbon copy of the first film with only half of what made it good to begin with.
However in this case, I am willing to let it slide, because at least it isn’t as frustrating to sit through. If anything, it’s actually not that bad as far these kinds of sequels go.
I would certainly take it any day over Home Alone 2 or the aforementioned Ghostbusters 2.
I remember we had a conversation about it, and I wouldn't say I agree. To say I knew it's was not going to reach the levels of the original, despite I'm a huge fan of it, and while they are some elements I can't say yes to those facts, there a part that say it's as entertaining as much like "Mary Poppins Return" it may be like a copy of the first, but it does put a sense of effort to be different than the original. As on Netflix of this year it's second favorite after Nimona.

I feel that Ginger could have told Molly not only why she should stay on the Island, but also WHY she SHOULDN'T go to the Mainland, She could have told her that there are evil humans on the mainland that if they found Molly, they would kill her and turn her into a pie, nuggets, or any other chicken food products to sell on the market or in fast food restaurants. In only telling her why the Island is an awesome place to live in without saying WHY Molly should NOT go to the Mainland, Molly's curiosity got the better of her and it almost got her killed and cost Ginger and Rocky their Daughter.
Also I am not surprised that Mrs. Tweedy survived the door falling on her. She survived a lot of crap in the first movie. But I am surprised that she managed to marry her way to being richer than she was previously. While Dr Fry may be a technological genius, he probably is ditzy when it comes to marriage choices. Also Tweedy is flirting with Reginald Smith hoping to squeeze her way to even more fortunes. I am surprised that she was able to find good status again after the Pie Machine Disaster at her old farm.

Im excited for the Wallace & Gromit sequel after the Chicken Run sequel!
I would've loved to see more of Ginger and Molly's dynamic because the way this movie started is legit thematically genius!
Basically after the chickens earn their freedom, Ginger has a daughter, and that's ultimately her main goal now: keeping her safe.
But while the movie gives some idea of her worrying about restricting Molly's freedom (since she's just like her) and being overprotective, it isn't fleshed out enough for me to feel invested, which really hurts honestly. That had so much potential.
10:14 I'm glad that the Brazilian dubbing didn't have this problem, because (*almost) all the voice actors from the first film and especially Ginger are in this film too.

When I first hears of this sequel, I was shocked they wanted to continue the story. I was hoping the plot to be about the chickens dealing and adjusting to their new life (Especially when there are like only 2 male chickens), coupled with a new villain.
Unfortunately, this is just your average Direct-to-Dvd sequel with the same villain.
Welp. While the story follows the similar beats of a lot of the direct-to-video sequels, thank goodness this sequel didn't feature the usual downgrade of animation quality that many DTV films had!
I may still check this movie out, since I do enjoy Aardman's stop-motion animation with its overall style & charm. I had no idea they refused to get the original voice for Ginger... she still sounded really good though!

This title can work for a good amount of animated sequels.
I missed calling Chicken Run as one of my favorite DreamWorks movies. I mean, the original is distributed by DreamWorks Animation, right? Yes. & it’s one of the films that revolutionized DreamWorks along with Antz & Shrek. When Universal Studios Hollywood first opened DreamWorks Theater, A.K.A. Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor's Quest, I thought it will be cool to see the return of Ginger & Rocky interacting with the other DreamWorks characters in the pre show. But just like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chicken Run is its own thing.
It's really a shame that Aardman has ended their partnership with DreamWorks after the way the company called 'To British' in Aardman movies like Curse Of The Were-Rabbit and Flushed Away.
All the controversy wasn't worth it for this disappointing sequel. There's some potential with teaching a new generation about the past, but they don't take advantage of it. Y'all are right, this is the one Aardman movie that didn't need a sequel unlike The Pirates that has alot more stories to tell.
I watched this yesterday with my mother and I did enjoy it fine, even if it wasn't as good as the original. In fact, it made me hungry for fast food.
But I have noticed that Aardman's more recent films, while still pretty good, aren't as in line as some of their masterpieces from the 2000s to early 2010s. I think starting with Early Man, they're leaning more on the safe side than on the risky side, something they often use to do during their Dreamworks and Sony days. Even Shaun the Sheep was a risk as it has very little to no dialogue involved and it's hard to tell a narrative story for 90 minutes with very little dialogue involved. The only other animated film I know that does that is Fantasia but that doesn't really have much of a story (except the Sorcerer's Apprentice part), but they managed to pull it off great.
Nevertheless, their films are still pretty good. Not great but they can still pull it off fine. And I am still excited to check out the next Wallace and Gromit feature film. Heck, even when their stories are weak, their master class animation is enough for me to recommend worth a watch, unlike say Santa Inc, which is also made in stop motion but boy did it not try hard enough to hide how much of a mess the story and its characters are in that.
It’s not as epic as the first movie and the soundtrack isn’t as good either. I also agree that they really should have brought back gingers original voice actor. The plot of this movie is basically the lion king 2 simbas pride mixed with the little mermaid 2. Yeah this movie isn’t bad but definitely needed a more interesting story. I really loved seeing these characters again after 23 years and seeing ginger and rocky become parents is so adorable.

Honestly, my main issue with the sequel is how the main conflict of the movie was completely Ginger's fault. I don't have a problem with characters doing irrational things to protect their loved ones if it's explained (which this movie does, as it is implied that Ginger has PTSD from the first movie), but it kinda bothers me how Ginger doesn't realise sheltering Molly was what lead to her running off
During/before the 3rd act she apologises because, as she says "I used to hate being fenced in, so why did I expect you to be any different...", but wanting to protect Molly wasn't the issue, it was not telling her WHY they were all hiding which lead to her trying to satisfy her own curiosity and subsequentially get abducted. I doubt she would have done that if Ginger just told her that the humans were dangerous.

While I do think this is a step down from the original, especially with the story feeling predictable, Aardman's huge mistake with Julia Sawalha's recasting and as much as I love Mrs. Tweedy (She's one of my favorite animated villains) I wish they had an explanation for her return...😑
But it's still a pretty good film, I did have a lot of fun watching it and you can't go wrong with Aardman's classic stop-motion animation, I give it a 7/10
Hey Mat. I'm sorry to break it to you but I actually really like this film as equal as the first "Chicken Run". I didn't find the film disappointing. I guess you and I have something in "uncommon". While you think that "Wish" is better than "Dawn of the Nugget" (good for you), I think I'm on the total opposite spectrum of that. I think that Disney Animation isn't in their good ole days as it used to be. Will they bounce back? Maybe(?). As for Aardman, if they do a third "Chicken Run", I bet they should do it as a crossover with Wallace and Gromit.

Admittedly, I found this to be a pretty good sequel to the first film. It’s not as good as the first film of course, but it’s not a bad movie by any means. But regardless of what we may think about the movie, we can at least all come together and agree…

I hated the world-building of this
The first Chicken Run had the chicken farm resembling a WWII POW camp set in the 1950s. It worked within its limitations, and made the fanciful elements (chicken pie machine, the aircraft, etc) convincing
But here, the chicken nugget factory looks like something out of James Bond, Thunderbirds, The Avengers (UK), all popular fictional media from the 1960s.
It pays tribute to the 1960s like the first one did with the 1950s, but there’s nothing unique about it
It’s just jarring how the first Chicken Run was so grounded in reality while the sequel just mimics already established worlds
I don’t like this movie. The fact it’s not set in the 1950s like the original AND the fact that the original voice actors did NOT return pisses me off.
I kind of love the chicken run 2 , it was charming and fun.
I'm gonna ask Warner Bros. Pictures to re-release Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget in theatres in the United States in 2024. also released in 3-D.

While I did enjoy this film a bit more than you did, I do agree, we didn’t really needed a sequel to Chicken Run.
Technically speaking, Farmageddon isn’t a direct sequel to 2015’s Shaun the Sheep Movie. It’s just a standalone film. Like what Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run is to the original SpongeBob SquarePants movie
Mad Props to Karey Kirkpatrick for coming back to work as screenwriter for this sequel. I just wish he didn’t subject himself to writing a predictable plot as well as play it safe.
The biggest warning I got from this movie was that half the original cast didn’t come back for this movie and was instead replaced with Thandie Newton, Zachary Levi, and Filch from Harry Potter

I think both Chicken Run movies, are awesome in my opinion respectfully.
It’s not a bad movie. But it’s just good. It’s funny, it looks great, and it’s well made. But the story feels like it’s hitting every formulaic cliché, doing nothing unique, nothing special. It’s a bit of a disservice to bring back this franchise to make something that is blatantly less creative. Anyone could have written this and it could have been made with any other characters.
Replacing Ginger’s voice for one that is noticeably not the same is inexcusable. They claim to have replaced her because she doesn’t sound the same. Yet the replacement is further away still.
Why does this sequel need to exist?
I admit I don't really get the excuse for turning down Sawalha since her replacement actually sounds older. Fine if they wanted to go that direction (like you said Ginger's MEANT to be older) but why contradict themselves there?
I feel like they played the other three hens with their original VAs together so much in this film just to try and maintain some similar life the original had.
