- Green Gartside: “‘KA-CHANG!’ Perfect Gamson magic. David and I were talking about the origin-myth of the guitar 'Ka-Chang'. What was the first such 'Ka-Chang' in recorded history?
The Scritti of Fred, David and I never did play live. I remember we had a tour lined up and kinda reluctantly went into a rehearsal place somewhere in Manhattan to figure out how the fuck this album could be played. I was shit scared about performing in public and David has never really seen the appeal of playing live. Fred, on the other hand, was a seasoned veteran.
If I recall correctly, it became apparent pretty immediately that we couldn’t reproduce the sound of Cupid & Psyche live, and our hearts weren’t in it. The project was abandoned. The current Scritti line-up figured out a way to play Perfect Way live so we debuted it in Japan 30 years, or more, after it was recorded.”
Following a reissue process overseen by Green Gartside the band's acclaimed albums Cupid & Psyche 85 and Anomie & Bonhomie are out now on vinyl.

I was so in love with this song in November 1985. 8th grade. Still loving it 40 years later!!!! ❤❤❤
This is why I am so glad I lived through the 80s fabulous music.
Me too!
Before I could afford the album, I taped the song off the radio and pushed play and pause over and over until I finally wrote all the lyrics (best I heard) in a notebook titled "Scrtti Politti" and I still have the notebook today!
Me too!!!1985
I’ll second that!👋😎👍
You and me both. GREAT TIMES. AWESOME BANDS LIKE THIS TOO.
Here in 2025 still digging this song and Scritti Politti, 40 yrs later!
❤
I still ADORE this song. Whole Cupid & Psyche album was incredible. 1985 forever.
85 4ever!
One of the best years of all time.
Even though I was mostly into new wave, goth and other alternative stuff at the time, this album was one of my guilty pleasures. Still got the vinyl too. Great album.
Very expensive album to make in the 80's aswell, for an artist who doesn't perform LIVE on stage because of extreme stage freight back in 1985....which he overcame in 2005 & performs live now....his voice is just stunning & his lyric writing style is still all his own & unique in all of music industry even to this day....
Without a question the 80s decade was phenomenal ‼️💯🔥😁👍🏼
Can confirm
No doubt!
And not a “safe space “ in sight 😂
There was nobody else that sounded like this in the 80s even though it was the perfect 80s pop sound.
There never was & never will be another 1980's. You had to be there to realize just how totally fuckin awesome it really was. Everything after just made me appreciate how special that decade actually was. I miss it frfr
This is definitely a contender in my list of 50 songs that defined the 80's.
The melody of this song absolutely does that. It's like breathing the air that was there back then.
It could be thee one if you consider... what song tops it? Is this not all of the 80s perfectly brought in one, flawless tune?
too much hard do that list! what a song! ❤
Gosh I miss the 80's! Another 80's Classic! Underrated song, IMO. Still a great song in 2023!❤
I know, right? I return to the 80s/90s genre music daily, because it was the absolute BEST variety of styles and musicality and creativity. At least in my lifetime.
The 80 s when men were men and women were proud of it
Were a teenager when this song came out age 15 1985 love the 80 s I am African American love the 80 s when men were men and women were proud of it
I do too. Growing up in Detroit and being 10 minutes from Canada, we had access to so many types of music. These songs are pure nostalgia.
It actually sounds like it’s from 89 or 90 this song was possibly 4 years ahead of its time!
As a African American whoo I were 15 when this song came out whoo I miss the 80 s
You are black or American please never say African American again its annoying. I am black btw
Me, too, sweetheart! I grew up listening to pop music and enjoying life! Life was beautiful! 🙏🏾🌹🥰🙏🏾🌹🥰
I lived in a tiny town in rural Australia and this album made me feel like there was a bigger world out there. It's so sublime and exciting. Got me through so much. Underrated 80s band
Same feeling in a small town in Ohio!
@@deborahhansen2983 ME TOO! Kate Bush opened doors for me. I met my husband in that small town in Ohio, and he too, loved Kate Bush.
@@marychandler8097 My Swedish friend while back Karl was into Kate Bush, and Yes.
Thank god for Wavelength and Rock Arena, or I would never have heard these guys way out here in rural Victoria 👍
really was a great album
/still is
This is the meaning of the word "Sonic Clarity". The loping, syncopated bass, the crystalline highs, and the snap of the gated drums make this song pop. The staggered lyrical rhythm structure, with the punctuated stanzas, allow for the singers emphasis to be felt into and out of , the bridge and fills. Great song!
This can also describe Boom There She Was😊
Well said! It, as you said, pops! Like great pop music should.
Whatever nerd
Great assessment and explanation.Thank you!
A good ear is a rare thing. Most people can’t even clap along in time. You have the gift. Great comments about this song. Bought it when it came out and still listening. The song is pure sonic bliss.
Such a memorable 80s tune. It doesn't get played enough on classic stations.
Never get tired of listening to this song. Can someone take me back to 1985?
Let's go !
The only way to get back there is riding in Jake Ryan's 944
Do what I do and listen to Laser 558 as it's 1985 all the time on that station.
この世で一番ステキな楽曲と声
80’sからずっと愛しています
This tune my senior year in high school go so much smoother.
I'm surprised I don't hear this more often on the 80s stations, I've always considered it a near perfectly crafted pop song.
...You nailed it. As close to 80's perfection, without being dated.
It is perfect.
Great that it doesnt! That way, we get to keep it to ourselves here :)
Great tune, very emblematic of the era.
Absolutely
This song and video totally galvanized me when I was in college. It was Christmas 1985. I'm glad Scritti Politti officially posted this.
I am 25 and I have been a fan of Scritti Politti since the age of 13. These songs have gotten me through all sorts of hell. The most life affirming stuff I swear down.
Ah,great/freaking!
Well said. Life affirming for sure. Sophisticated pop!
You have great taste in music!👌😎👍
You are a smart young man with great taste.
I also agree with your OP. I literally have listened to this song every morning since I first heard it (no, I will never tire of it) because it is a sparkling, joyous tune that always makes me smile. Green Gartside is a remarkably intelligent, talented and lovely man.
Beautiful video directed by Paula Greif and Pete Kagan for one of Scritti's best songs. Just perfect!
When "underrated" is mentioned in the 80's, Scritti and Green are a MUST.
Timeless and stylish like no other music. I miss you 80's.
1985. Take me back please.
I'm in bro! Simpler times in 1985!!
I’m calling “Shotgun”!!!
Me too!! I was 22
Me too take me back to the 80s too.
@@losangeles3010 I was 13 😭😭
2024 and I am hooked on this song again! 😮😊

Yep 39 years doesn't change a great song. Sometimes they sound better now than they did back then.
This song will never get old
Never get tired of listening to scritti politti
I was 14. Blessed to be a teenager during the 80s
❤One of my favorites....I'm old now but wouldn't have missed growing up in the 80s for ANYTHING!!❤
Just came up on my feed and I've got tears in my eyes. Hadn't heard this in dog's years. Takes me back to high school in Vestavia Hills, AL.
Go Rebels!!! Class of 1987.
I Remember Richard blade playing this on video one back in the mid 80's circa 1985 such a great time to be alive still listening in 2025
This takes me back to the cassette days of the mid 80's in middle school.
ME TOO!!!!
Freshman at the University of Miami on the football scholarship
Bought the Cassette of these guys in the 1980s,, , and it still plays awesome !
80s music as so eclectic. We had such a wide variety of styles and genres to love. They were all unique and sounded so great. Just lots of feel good music!
Brings Back Great Memories from 1985-1986.
like .... ?
How could this song have not been a hit in the 80's? 😀
It should've been in the Top 10-- even #1, but it peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US.
It was a Hit
@@carlcookson9693 Not really. Ask 10 people who Scritti Politti is and you'll get blank stares
I'm Arthur Bhutic.
I saw this by May 1985! I was at the end of 9 living in Northwest South Carolina in North Chestnut Springs! More than a few years after, I've moved to Houston! Back then in SC: Unemployment was high! The economy highly depended on Military! Today, unemployment isn't high anymore! The economy diversified to Manufacturing! Greenville south of Chestnut Springs is too even get the Steel Industry and be hailed "Pittsburgh Of The South"!
This is 80s music at its best. Good luck finding a better 80s song than Perfect Way. Scritti Politti rules! 💪💪💪
Absolute! :-)
Absolutely agree 💯
This and “All I Need Is A Miracle” are two of my fav songs from the 80’s.
@@imeditswhatidoakaedthomas6292 Who sings that song? I'd love to hear it! 😁

Green is the man. What a beautiful song
Scrittii Politti simply, plain and simple, one of my all time favorites. Wore out at least three cassettes listening to Cupid and Psyche '85
I remember this back in the day ....loved it then and still love it now 2024
❤The perfect way to an 80's Flash Back thanks for the trip ❤😊
Great song from a even better year 1985!🎶🎤💚
I heard this in the supermarket today! I love it - brings me back to all the great tunes from that autumn of '85 ❤
OMG!! I LOVED this song back in the day! SOOOO glad that I got reintroduced to it again! 🥰
80s music will always be the best.
The most perfect man ever. Had humungous crush on him for the past 40 years, dream came true when I saw them perform this live a few months back. Was worth waiting for 💚
Is he not gay?
@@titteryenot4524 his wife would say not 😹
@@Bethwoo67 Many a homosexual man has hidden behind a wifey. Either way, in his pomp he was the prettiest boy in town. Almost had a crush on him myself! Don’t tell the wife.😳
@@titteryenot4524 your secret safe with me, promise 🤗😹
@@Bethwoo67 It’s true, though. Pressure, back in the day, not so much now, for fellas to do the conventional wifey and 2.4 kids thing. Pretty sure that Gartside is, at the very least, bisexual. My gaydar is, normally, strong. The other contemporary of his was the, if anything, even more beautiful David Sylvian of Japan. I’ve turned out hetero. (just!), but I recall that back in 1982, Gartside and Sylvian almost tipped me the other way, as Bowie did for many other lads 10 years earlier.
Ah! 17yr old me crushing on these guys all over again. Love this song!!
It's hard to fathom that Green Gartside is nearly 67. I was 19 in 1985 when this gem charted. This album is a huge part of the formative soundtrack that is my life. Best times, ever.
I know..
Great song! Please take me back to the 80s.
Love those Chord Changes in the Bridge !!
I heard this tune the other day at Lowe's........GREAT GREAT SONG!
The perfect way to start my day! Love it!
I literally play it every morning to put me in a good mood.
So glad I was an 80s teen. The music was unmatched!
Perfect Way still stands the test of time. Great groove and performance. All the best to Scritti Politti !
4-2-24 This song on my playlist. Real old school music 🎶 😎 🎸 🥁 🕺 💃 🚘 😊💯 🎯 🍷 🌴 🏖
I had never heard this song before until a few years ago when this video played on MTV Classic. I liked it immediately and I then looked for and bought the bands Best Of compilation. Cool stuff!
Definately one of those great songs you hear at the end of the movie, while you stand there and put on your coat! So positive and uplifting. Very inspiring
Favorite new wave band of 1985 couldn't get enough of this song that year 🎉
Such a unique talent and a distinctive voice. Mr. Green Gartside, aka Scritti Politti.
I feel lucky I was able to experience the music of the 70s and 80s. Good music good times. God help these rap kids.
An 80s classic and all time favourite of mine! 🤩
Cupid and Psyche forever! „KA-CHANG!“
WOODBEEZ AND ABSOLUTE were my fave songs by Scritti Politti in the 80s and on Spotify and UA-cam video music I play them alot
This is one of my all-time favorites - it never gets old and I get happy and wanna dance whenever I hear it. Love all the beat and key changes that make it a very unique composition. This artist is very under-rated.
Why were there so many “one hit wonders” in the 80’s? Because there was so much talent and anyone had a chance to see their record go huge because DJ’s played what they and theor listeners liked, not what the radio stations told them to play.
Perfect explanation
YES!!! I AM SO HAPPY I WILL FINALLY GET TO SEE THIS MUSIC VIDEO IN HD!!! THIS IS PERFECT! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
We can relive the 80s as long as we want, thanks you UA-cam 😊
I use to play this song over and over in my college dorm room! It use to drive my roommates nuts! I love this song!
This is the perfect song for hitting the heavy bag. The beats, the rhythm & the tempo are ideal.
Also great to dance to
Oh wow so cool! The version extended mix of this song has always been one of my fav 12”
I whole heartedly agree...In my top 3 80's dub mixes of all time. I also use that U.K. mix to test speakers out at the apple store. There's always a small crowd slowly growing around me as I play it. Never fails. Lol!
@@BeatFaktoryCorp Awesome, how cool is that! Lol so what’s the other two? 🤔
Amazing!!! There is no such music today. So sexy and full of passion and rhythm.
Has anyone contacted Green Gartside about whether or not he's the singer of 'Everyone Knows That'? His voice sounds like an exact match.
agreed and i don't think he's aware of it
I Love this Group and have most of their Albums In My Collection over 60 Years and really like

Brings back some very happy memories of that summer . Things were somehow better way back then. Thank you Green & co. 🙂
I just heard this about an hour ago while waiting for the dinner check with a friend, and we had to linger a bit to listen to it..this song was big my very first semester of college..1985..don't do the math..lol..what sweet memories..😢😅❤🎶🎼
I still love the look of this video. It seems as current now as when it was released. I hope this is going to iTunes too. I’ve been buying all of their videos as they are released. So happy to finally have them!!!
Congrats
It is there. Have it on my queue.
Great song, great video 🙂 Saved in my Playlist!
Yes, I like the "nouvelle vague"-like look of this: the fast mix of handcam shots, light and shadows play and wider moving snapshots of the band playing. I think some of this was filmed in France, perhaps Paris - the shop or bar windows with price notes scrawled onto them have a French feel and I think it says "f" (Franc) at several places. The young ladies look French too... :)
About time......35 * years to see this Video for the first time!!!!! Thanks
Wonderful song.
I was in middle school when this terrific song came out. (13 !) haha just a baby. BEST SONG memory. EVER. My crazy girlfriends were in love with the lead singer. He WAS a cutie! 😂🎉❤
Pure pop perfection. One of my top ten singles of the 80s.
One of my 80's favorite. Still sounds awesome all of these years later.
The video has a look and feel of Duran Duran's video for " Notorious". Anyone else see that???
You know this is a brilliant piece of songwriting when the great Miles Davi’s does a cover of it.
💯
That's why I'm here.
serious? i had no idea. where do i find it? youtube?
I finally found this song! I thought it was El Debarge singing it for the longest time. When my kid asks what was the 80’s like. I play this!
Excellent!
Great song! I thought it was El Dabarge too! The more you know.
@@b.w.l.8237 You mean “Who’s Johnny” by El DeBarge? I got that song set as my ringtone!

This song falls under one category; REAL MUSIC!!!
Love the way Green breezes up to the mic at the start of the song…. so damn cute 💓 Love the song too, of course.
Green gartside is such an phenomenal talent and he created an modern soul masterpiece with cupid and psyche 85 and also with their underrated 1988 follow up provision just feel good music at its finest
This song is perfection. The vocals and production are top-tier💜💜💜
Absolutely ❤️
Yep. They were never really able to top that album in terms of artistic perfection and swing, but it remains a classic.
One of the best songs ever.
This is a Perfect song! And Green definitely found a perfect way to make this girl go crazy! So grateful I lived during the 80's.
over 30 years later and it still sounds current and badass.
I heard this song in Bed-Sty Brooklyn in 85 as a kid , it help me escape & know there's bigger world was out there. A great feel good song. 😊
Definitive 80's. Scritti Politti (as a band, their sound) was tight, slick, polished, intelligent, and alive. Something sorely lacking in today's music. From their incomparable 1985 masterpiece album: Cupid, and Psyche.
you should listen to their 1988 album Provision, it's even better.
@@willritter4076 things moved fast in the 80s (as Ferris Bueller noted) by 1988 this sound wasn't the quintessence - of the zingiest - it was in '85.
Genuinely think you should listen to some tracks by the 1975 if you wanna get those slick polished pop anthems with intelligent lyrics !! One of many examples of great music today!!x
You called it.
I stumbled upon it when it first came out.fell in love with it learned to play the drums and bass to it
These scritti politti songs are just Awesome ❤❤
I have no idea, But this PERFECT song made me fall in love with the "KA-CHANG"
Funny how songs stick in your mind and you can seem to be back in a specific moment in your life and know exactly where you were, who you were with and what you were thinking. This is one of those songs!
Epitomizes the 1980's exuberance and optimism
OMG I forgot about this 80s gem!! 😍😍😍😍 I loved this song so much!! So glad I was an 80s teen, the absolute best era of music.
An uplifting song that you can't help loving!!!❤
Still just as magical and a masterpiece. Pure pop perfection!
Green's definitely still got the perfect way to make the girls go crazy! ❤️ The Shepherd's Bush gig was a blast! Keep it coming! 🖤🎤🎶
God, he was gorgeous, no? Even handsomer as a natural brun. But as good looking as he was, the music was far more important. He is a tall man, too - 6 feet, 6 inches.
Yep, in this video he looks as effortlessly handsome as a young Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan (in the video for Hypnotize he looks like Björn Borg...). I didn't realize he was THAT tall
This brings it back to starting high-school. Getting close to 40 decades now. 80s had its music.
This band are the quintessential sound of the 80s
💯💯💯
Yeah, I was coming to that conclusion too. Impeccably produced, sounds comfortably modern (1980's), confident and aspirational
agreed!
@@ScrittiPolitti thanks for this gem it's age well we'll it' didn't really age still fresh like morning dew. It takes me back to memories of youthful love of life.
Yes absolutely...
This song popped into my head tonight and good ol UA-cam delivers. Brilliant and sounds just as great 40 years or so later but nothing beats dancing to the plethora of 80s music in the 80s. There were so many great and unique sounds from all over the world swirling around at once. Sad that music now is so bland.
Love this song. Green was and still is gorgeous, love his voice
