- Green Gartside: “‘KA-CHANG!’ Perfect Gamson magic. David and I were talking about the origin-myth of the guitar 'Ka-Chang'. What was the first such 'Ka-Chang' in recorded history?
The Scritti of Fred, David and I never did play live. I remember we had a tour lined up and kinda reluctantly went into a rehearsal place somewhere in Manhattan to figure out how the fuck this album could be played. I was shit scared about performing in public and David has never really seen the appeal of playing live. Fred, on the other hand, was a seasoned veteran.
If I recall correctly, it became apparent pretty immediately that we couldn’t reproduce the sound of Cupid & Psyche live, and our hearts weren’t in it. The project was abandoned. The current Scritti line-up figured out a way to play Perfect Way live so we debuted it in Japan 30 years, or more, after it was recorded.”
Following a reissue process overseen by Green Gartside the band's acclaimed albums Cupid & Psyche 85 and Anomie & Bonhomie are out now on vinyl.

I'm surprised I don't hear this more often on the 80s stations, I've always considered it a near perfectly crafted pop song.
...You nailed it. As close to 80's perfection, without being dated.
It is perfect.
Great that it doesnt! That way, we get to keep it to ourselves here :)
Great tune, very emblematic of the era.
Absolutely
This is why I am so glad I lived through the 80s fabulous music.
Me too!
Before I could afford the album, I taped the song off the radio and pushed play and pause over and over until I finally wrote all the lyrics (best I heard) in a notebook titled "Scrtti Politti" and I still have the notebook today!
Me too!!!1985
I’ll second that!👋😎👍
You and me both. GREAT TIMES. AWESOME BANDS LIKE THIS TOO.
I still ADORE this song. Whole Cupid & Psyche album was incredible. 1985 forever.
85 4ever!
One of the best years of all time.
Even though I was mostly into new wave, goth and other alternative stuff at the time, this album was one of my guilty pleasures. Still got the vinyl too. Great album.
Without a question the 80s decade was phenomenal ‼️💯🔥😁👍🏼
Can confirm
No doubt!
And not a “safe space “ in sight 😂
There was nobody else that sounded like this in the 80s even though it was the perfect 80s pop sound.
I lived in a tiny town in rural Australia and this album made me feel like there was a bigger world out there. It's so sublime and exciting. Got me through so much. Underrated 80s band
Same feeling in a small town in Ohio!
@@deborahhansen2983 ME TOO! Kate Bush opened doors for me. I met my husband in that small town in Ohio, and he too, loved Kate Bush.

As a African American whoo I were 15 when this song came out whoo I miss the 80 s

Gosh I miss the 80's! Another 80's Classic! Underrated song, IMO. Still a great song in 2023!❤
I know, right? I return to the 80s/90s genre music daily, because it was the absolute BEST variety of styles and musicality and creativity. At least in my lifetime.
The 80 s when men were men and women were proud of it
Were a teenager when this song came out age 15 1985 love the 80 s I am African American love the 80 s when men were men and women were proud of it
I do too. Growing up in Detroit and being 10 minutes from Canada, we had access to so many types of music. These songs are pure nostalgia.
It actually sounds like it’s from 89 or 90 this song was possibly 4 years ahead of its time!
This is the meaning of the word "Sonic Clarity". The loping, syncopated bass, the crystalline highs, and the snap of the gated drums make this song pop. The staggered lyrical rhythm structure, with the punctuated stanzas, allow for the singers emphasis to be felt into and out of , the bridge and fills. Great song!
This can also describe Boom There She Was😊
Well said! It, as you said, pops! Like great pop music should.
Whatever nerd
Great assessment and explanation.Thank you!
A good ear is a rare thing. Most people can’t even clap along in time. You have the gift. Great comments about this song. Bought it when it came out and still listening. The song is pure sonic bliss.
This is definitely a contender in my list of 50 songs that defined the 80's.
The melody of this song absolutely does that. It's like breathing the air that was there back then.
It could be thee one if you consider... what song tops it? Is this not all of the 80s perfectly brought in one, flawless tune?
Never get tired of listening to this song. Can someone take me back to 1985?
Let's go !
The only way to get back there is riding in Jake Ryan's 944
Do what I do and listen to Laser 558 as it's 1985 all the time on that station.
This is 80s music at its best. Good luck finding a better 80s song than Perfect Way. Scritti Politti rules! 💪💪💪
Absolute! :-)
Absolutely agree 💯
This and “All I Need Is A Miracle” are two of my fav songs from the 80’s.

When Miles Davis thinks highly enough of you to cover your song.....that's pretty much all that needs to be said.
💯
Hello. I just saw your post from a year ago and I would say, the fact that you know he covered this song says more about you than anything. I owned the vinyl of Mles playing this song and thought I must be the only one on the planet. Haha
@@bikeboyiv I assure you, you're not!
C'mon, more people know Miles' version than this one surely!
What? I had no idea…
And I have so many Miles Davis records (or CD’s back in the day).
I lost so many copies of Kinda Blue to people who ‘borrowed’ them. 😂
I am 25 and I have been a fan of Scritti Politti since the age of 13. These songs have gotten me through all sorts of hell. The most life affirming stuff I swear down.
Ah,great/freaking!
Well said. Life affirming for sure. Sophisticated pop!
You have great taste in music!👌😎👍
You are a smart young man with great taste.
I also agree with your OP. I literally have listened to this song every morning since I first heard it (no, I will never tire of it) because it is a sparkling, joyous tune that always makes me smile. Green Gartside is a remarkably intelligent, talented and lovely man.
This band are the quintessential sound of the 80s
💯💯💯
Yeah, I was coming to that conclusion too. Impeccably produced, sounds comfortably modern (1980's), confident and aspirational
agreed!
@@ScrittiPolitti thanks for this gem it's age well we'll it' didn't really age still fresh like morning dew. It takes me back to memories of youthful love of life.

Such a memorable 80s tune. It doesn't get played enough on classic stations.
You know this is a brilliant piece of songwriting when the great Miles Davi’s does a cover of it.
💯
That's why I'm here.
serious? i had no idea. where do i find it? youtube?
80s music will always be the best.
This takes me back to the cassette days of the mid 80's in middle school.
ME TOO!!!!
Freshman at the University of Miami on the football scholarship
Definitive 80's. Scritti Politti (as a band, their sound) was tight, slick, polished, intelligent, and alive. Something sorely lacking in today's music. From their incomparable 1985 masterpiece album: Cupid, and Psyche.
you should listen to their 1988 album Provision, it's even better.
@@willritter4076 things moved fast in the 80s (as Ferris Bueller noted) by 1988 this sound wasn't the quintessence - of the zingiest - it was in '85.
Genuinely think you should listen to some tracks by the 1975 if you wanna get those slick polished pop anthems with intelligent lyrics !! One of many examples of great music today!!x
You called it.
I stumbled upon it when it first came out.fell in love with it learned to play the drums and bass to it
Has anyone contacted Green Gartside about whether or not he's the singer of 'Everyone Knows That'? His voice sounds like an exact match.
agreed and i don't think he's aware of it
This song will never get old
....Released Summer of 1985, and took almost a HALF A YEAR to peak out, at #11 Pop, in 1986! ...and THIS VIDEO, is quintessential in shifting the 'look' of 80's Music Video! ...Right after this Video, everyone...EVERYONE... was copying this pastiche style.. (CONT.)

...I KNEW it was gonna put Scritti Polliti over the top, back then...I'm HONORED to have the memories of this CLASSIC LP etched into my brain...and the Video's influence on Pop Video NEEDS to be heralded...THANKS, Green, David, & Fred...you made the 80's ROCK!!!
Same here. I played this cassette constantly. I am to buy it 3 times. I loved the remixes also. I also own the Miles Davis jazz remake of this! Playing since 1985.
Brings Back Great Memories from 1985-1986.
like .... ?
When "underrated" is mentioned in the 80's, Scritti and Green are a MUST.
Beautiful video directed by Paula Greif and Pete Kagan for one of Scritti's best songs. Just perfect!
This song and video totally galvanized me when I was in college. It was Christmas 1985. I'm glad Scritti Politti officially posted this.
Timeless and stylish like no other music. I miss you 80's.
This sounded so much better than other 80s pop, it was mature but cool as fk. Loved the album too.
Yeah that’s it,this was different better somehow,good take 🤟

The most perfect man ever. Had humungous crush on him for the past 40 years, dream came true when I saw them perform this live a few months back. Was worth waiting for 💚
Is he not gay?
@@titteryenot4524 his wife would say not 😹
@@Bethwoo67 Many a homosexual man has hidden behind a wifey. Either way, in his pomp he was the prettiest boy in town. Almost had a crush on him myself! Don’t tell the wife.😳
@@titteryenot4524 your secret safe with me, promise 🤗😹
@@Bethwoo67 It’s true, though. Pressure, back in the day, not so much now, for fellas to do the conventional wifey and 2.4 kids thing. Pretty sure that Gartside is, at the very least, bisexual. My gaydar is, normally, strong. The other contemporary of his was the, if anything, even more beautiful David Sylvian of Japan. I’ve turned out hetero. (just!), but I recall that back in 1982, Gartside and Sylvian almost tipped me the other way, as Bowie did for many other lads 10 years earlier.
80s music as so eclectic. We had such a wide variety of styles and genres to love. They were all unique and sounded so great. Just lots of feel good music!
It's hard to fathom that Green Gartside is nearly 67. I was 19 in 1985 when this gem charted. This album is a huge part of the formative soundtrack that is my life. Best times, ever.
I know..
This band seemed to be the first to usher in this sound that became the late 80s. It was fresh when I first heard it.
OMG!! I LOVED this song back in the day! SOOOO glad that I got reintroduced to it again! 🥰
Definitely one of my favorite bands! The song is 100% 80’s
Great song from a even better year 1985!🎶🎤💚
Who wasn't partying back in the 80s knows nothing 😂👍🏻💪🏼💯💥💥
This song is perfection. The vocals and production are top-tier💜💜💜

Yep. They were never really able to top that album in terms of artistic perfection and swing, but it remains a classic.
"Hot Tub Time Machine" brought me to Scritti Politti and I don't regret a thing.

How could this song have not been a hit in the 80's? 😀
Wonderful song.
The perfect way to start my day! Love it!
I literally play it every morning to put me in a good mood.
I feel lucky I was able to experience the music of the 70s and 80s. Good music good times. God help these rap kids.
👉 A brilliant song and sparkling production!!
One of the best of the 80s... *Mature & stylish.*
Holds up with other classics like Double's hit
*"Captain of Her Heart"* and ABC's *"Poison Arrow"!*
Love all three of those songs.
That wild chord sequence moving from verse to chorus - can you imagine a modern pop song with such a thing?
"Godhopping" with Dogs Die in Hot Cars had similar zany, heavily syncopated piano riffs and wild chord progressions, but that was twenty years ago - I agree that today it would be pretty much unthinkable from a Top 20 charting hit single (strangely, "Perfect Way" was only a minor hit in their native Britain, just getting past #50, but it went to #11 on the main Billboard chart). Cupid & Psyche '85 is a brilliant album!
genius isn't it?
Fortunately for me, I can't recall any pop songs from the last 20 odd years.
@@Mrc172 😂
@@Mrc172 I can't either; they're not memorable (at best). But I am forced to hear them in public places sometimes, and it's grim, grim, grim

On the radio a late summer day in 1985. You had to be there. First thought this was El DeBarge.
I still love the look of this video. It seems as current now as when it was released. I hope this is going to iTunes too. I’ve been buying all of their videos as they are released. So happy to finally have them!!!
Congrats
It is there. Have it on my queue.
Great song, great video 🙂 Saved in my Playlist!
Yes, I like the "nouvelle vague"-like look of this: the fast mix of handcam shots, light and shadows play and wider moving snapshots of the band playing. I think some of this was filmed in France, perhaps Paris - the shop or bar windows with price notes scrawled onto them have a French feel and I think it says "f" (Franc) at several places. The young ladies look French too... :)
I was in middle school when this terrific song came out. (13 !) haha just a baby. BEST SONG memory. EVER. My crazy girlfriends were in love with the lead singer. He WAS a cutie! 😂🎉❤
WOODBEEZ AND ABSOLUTE were my fave songs by Scritti Politti in the 80s and on Spotify and UA-cam video music I play them alot

I have no idea, But this PERFECT song made me fall in love with the "KA-CHANG"
Somebody get me Doc's "Back To the Future" DeLorean & take me back to 1980 so I can live through this entire decade AGAIN!!! Whoever lets me use it...I'll take you with me! You don't even have to bring me back!
Funny how songs stick in your mind and you can seem to be back in a specific moment in your life and know exactly where you were, who you were with and what you were thinking. This is one of those songs!
An 80s classic and all time favourite of mine! 🤩
Cupid and Psyche forever! „KA-CHANG!“
I LOVED this song when it came out! Fast forward to about 1998. I have my first old dinosaur Gateway computer and I need an online name. I happened to read an article about them doing a reunion tour. over 30 years later and it still sounds current and badass.
I thought the song and album did quite well without touring. THOSE DRUMS! WHO CAN RESIST THEM!

4-2-24 This song on my playlist. Real old school music 🎶 😎 🎸 🥁
I collect 80s one hit wonders like diamonds 4:05 ! Why? Because back then there wasn't music on demand. You had to go but the record of cassette tape...or record it off the radio, remember that??😂 The past 20+ years kids can just download that awesome song from some random artist. We didn't have that back then.
I remember this back in the day ....loved it then and still love it now 2024
This is one of my all-time favorites - it never gets old and I get happy and wanna dance whenever I hear it. Love all the beat and key changes that make it a very unique composition. This artist is very under-rated.
Why were there so many “one hit wonders” in the 80’s? Because there was so much talent and anyone had a chance to see their record go huge because DJ’s played what they and theor listeners liked, not what the radio stations told them to play.
Perfect explanation
That recording microphone that they're using is an original Neuman M 149 Condenser mic. Because of it's amazing, German engineering, warm, "analog" sound, and remarkable sensitivity and durability, it is still in use today!
Green's definitely still got the perfect way to make the girls go crazy! ❤️ The Shepherd's Bush gig was a blast! Keep it coming! 🖤🎤🎶
God, he was gorgeous, no? Even handsomer as a natural brun. But as good looking as he was, the music was far more important. He is a tall man, too - 6 feet, 6 inches.
Yep, in this video he looks as effortlessly handsome as a young Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan (in the video for Hypnotize he looks like Björn Borg...). I didn't realize he was THAT tall
