Totally agree. I think it is the best one ever. Of course, many had been done by then, Friedkin himself directed the famous French Connection, and Bullitt is well known but I think this one tops both of them. What puts it over the top is the acting of Peterson and Pankow in the cars, Peterson is out of his mind and Pankow is losing his shit in the back! You couldn't possibly ratchet the tension any higher, they had just killed a guy and are driving the wrong way down an LA freeway at rush hour, totally insane!

If you lived in Los Angeles in the 80’s this film captured it perfectly. Amazing to think that William Petersen starred in two quintessential '80s movies in consecutive years, To Live And Die In L.A. in 1985 and Manhunter in 1986, both of which also had killer soundtracks. The rest of the cast is incredible, too: Willem Dafoe, John Pankow, John Turturro, Dean Stockwell, even Jane Leeves in a bit part.
The best part is that Petersen was basically just a theater guy before it, his only on screen role before this was just a bartender with one line in Thief, where he was just another guy that gets roughed up by James Caan. Next thing he’s playing a guy just as tough and cool as James Caan.
Another neo Noir movies in 1980s including Body Heat, Tequila Sunrise, Sudden Impact (a Dirty Harry sequel & franchise), Mona Lisa, Blow Out, The Postman Always Rings Twice (remake), Thief, Manhunter (a Hannibal novel series to the big screen), The Untouchables (movie), Blood Simple, Angel Heart, 8 Million Ways To Die, D.O.A (Dead or Arrival), Blue Velvet, At Close Range, Black Rain, Against All Odds (a movie or soundtrack) & one the most noir science fiction movie in history Blade Runner.
I was born in 1975 so I was an 80s child, and wouldn't have it any other way! I used to love the summers doing stuff with my friends like they did on Goonies! What a great time!
I remember one night as a operations sergeant acting as contract supervisor doing security in downtown Atlanta at the County government complex and I heard this song off in the distance while walking Patrol around the parameter at 1 a.m., with another officer and all of the sudden the lyrics made total sense you could change the city and it would still feel the same. I still get that feeling every time I hear it now and I've been retired since 2016
One of my all time fav movies. Great story, cool 80's soundtrack, nonstop action, and easily the best, most nerve wracking car chase since Bullitt in 1968! Remember seeing this when it was new in the theater, and yes it was in L.A. (well LA county anyhow lol) As for Wang Chung......... "Like your work!" 👍

Nick and Jack are professional musicians and songwriters who really know what they're doing. They wrote the whole soundtrack in 1.5 weeks after just reading the script.
Even more mind-blowing was that Prince wrote the entire soundtrack to the original 1988 Batman with Michael Keaton in only 14 days. I never knew that this soundtrack was busted out in less than two weeks. There were giants in those days!!
The French Connection {1971} and The Seven Ups {1973} had Great Car Chases and both had the late great Roy Scheider before he did Jaws. RIP Roy (1932-2008} Great Actor always missed.
The 80's was far better for pop music . Movies too . Not even close . Pop music in the 90's was awful. There was no pop in the 90's even half as cool as new wave or synth pop . This is beyond dispute
Its so nice to know other people love this song and movie as much as I do!! This is one of my favorites. William L and Dafoe are superb in this! Liked a couple of Wang Chung songs before, but the whole soundtrack is just fantastic. I never get tired of listening to it!! This is the kind of stuff that made the 80's (for me) the greatest decade!
I put myself through college in the mid-eighties by working in the college print shop using an offset printing press. When this movie came out, it added some real glamour and excitement to the job. The print forgery scene with Willem Dafoe is still one of my favorite scenes in any movie. Never tried forging money, though . . .

Peffectly described. "Dark yet cool vibe that I can't quite explain". I know what you mean. A lot of 80's crime movies have perfect soundtracks that capture that feeling. I've been listening to a lot of Howard Jones recently, and he's kind of the same way.
One of the finest pieces of music concerning LA ever made. It helps to be a native. The surreal love/hate things people have about Los Angeles are unprecedented regarding practically any other city on earth. Intense, yet full of light. Deception and recovery. It all goes on.
This movie is so good as it is I hope no one comes up with the idea of doing a remake of this., sometimes the best thing you can do is just leave it as it is. This movie is so rewatchable it's actually frightening because it always feels like you've watched it for the first time and the soundtrack itself is just perfect they knocked it out of the park even now in 2021 when I hear the theme from this I get pumped
This movie so far ahead of its time. Can't believe its a 35 year old film . And the soundtrack is still fresh and new after all these years. Miss the 80s.
What a brilliant song. It's got everything you want from a classic 80's soundtrack. There's good music being made today, but it's not popular at all. In the 80's, brilliant music made it into the mainstream constantly. Stuff like this is just so timelessly cool and tasteful.
Absolutely right I can remember songs from the 70,s but I can’t remember who I just listened to last year. And I don’t have dementia , just saying I like the new songs that are out there but for me I will never forget the 70,s and 80,s .👍👍👍👍
***** I grew up in the 80's and they never got as big as they should have based on how good they were. You are talking out your ass hen you say that I "don't know of them that well", you fucking little hipster douchebag.
+johnny07652 It truly is---this came out when I was in junior high, and I loved the unusual rhythm and beats of it. Always loved that slow thoughtful tune, and never understood why it didn't make the pop charts---I only heard it on a local rock station, interestingly enough. Didn't see the movie until years later because I didn't think it sounded all that interesting. In fact, the movie itself barely got noticed at the time---I only found out about from watching a Siskel & Ebert show at the time. After having seen it, I can say that it's a certified near classic, and it's nice to see that rep has grown over the years.
Man, those years were killer. I was playing clubs on the Strip, while my wife's boss (Lennon-esque guy at the beginning of this) signed these guys to Geffen, and this tune (especially the intro) still gives me goosebumps!
To this day, this is my "benchmark" album to play when I want to show off the sound of my stereo system. It is, IMHO, one of the best sounding recordings ever made. The sonic range that it covers will really put a system through it's paces.
To this day, To Live and Die in LA is one of the best films I've ever seen. There was just something so raw and visceral about it. Plus the entire soundtrack is Wang Chung! 🔥
this part is so so moving : I wonder why we waste our lives here When we could run away to paradise But I am held in some invisible vice And I can't get away To live and die in L.A.
The time of the 80s everything had its magic and its essence especially in the films of: Action, Series B, Slasher, comedy, Martial Arts. Without a doubt, the music of the time was a fundamental part of that mix with the cinema and the result was wonderful. 100% recommended movie
Pure 80's contemporary pop/rock at it's best, takes me back to the good ol' days of the golden age of modern contemporary music. I ❤️ Wang Chung. 😌💭🎶🎧🎹🎸🥁🎷🎸🎶🥰🥰🥰
Listening to Wang Chung helps you time travel. Certain Music follows The Rhythm and the Flow in a peculiar way and if you can land a powerful enough memory, using the olfactory along with music works very well. What ever time in your life that as a strong pull of emotion. Find one with music association, and the rest is complicated, sorry. It's all about the Rhythm and the Flow. Peace Be The Journey
This is a great video. Love the Friedkin cameos. After a decade-long slump, this film was his critical comeback but, sadly, not a financial one. Still, not every director has four masterpieces (French Connection, Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live and Die) in their filmography, not to mention an Oscar on the mantle. That's achievement enough for a seat on the Hall of Fame express. Nowadays, the man successfully directs operas!
Such nostalgia... I remembered ramping up this song along with the soundtrack of Miami Vice while cruising the city streets and boulevards in my then '74 Ford Gran Torino at night... The 80's was and still the best.
God I love this comment... I miss the gritty 80's.. I love all gritty crime films during that period of time, including the over-the-top ones like Scarface.
Hands up if John Mulaney brought you here! 🖐 What a great song!

In the heat of the day
Every time you go away
I have to piece my life together
Every time you're away
In the heat of the day
In the dark of the night
Every time I turn the light
I feel that God is not in heaven
In the dark of the night
The dark of the night
I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the room I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA
I wonder why we waste our lives here
When we could run away to paradise
But I am held in some invisible vise
And I can't get away
To live and die in LA
If I let myself go
And for where I just don't know
I'd maybe hit some cold new river
That led out to the sea
An unknown sea
I'd either swim or I'd drown
Or just keep falling down and down
I think its that, that makes me quiver
Just to keep falling down
Down, down, down
I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the way I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA
In every word that you say
I feel my freedom slip away
I feel the bars come down around me
And I can't get away
I can't get away
I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the room I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA
I wonder why we waste our lives here
When we could run away to paradise
But I am held in some invisible vise
And I can't get away

movie + soundtrack = matchless performances..... sadly, they don't make 'em like this anymore...
DURAN DURAN and WANG CHUNG can sleep easy - both did AMAZING title tracks to films in '85!!!!!!!!
w
Do you mean Duran Duran’s “View To A Kill” for the James Bond film of same name ? Dig that tune.
@@diaphanouswaffle Yes, both top-drawer title songs from 1985!
Including Notorious
This movie so far ahead of its time. Can't believe its a 35 year old film . And the soundtrack is still fresh and new after all these years. Miss the 80s.
What a brilliant song. It's got everything you want from a classic 80's soundtrack. There's good music being made today, but it's not popular at all. In the 80's, brilliant music made it into the mainstream constantly. Stuff like this is just so timelessly cool and tasteful.
you are right! Underated music
I agree. It's perfect. It's got that grittyness to it. Raw, rugged feel. But also a tint of flamboyance. It's perfect.
Made a pretty good beer commercial, too.
Love the sinister feel of it in parts balanced with a kind of forlorness
Absolutely right I can remember songs from the 70,s but I can’t remember who I just listened to last year. And I don’t have dementia , just saying I like the new songs that are out there but for me I will never forget the 70,s and 80,s .👍👍👍👍
Great song, great movie.
Beautiful song in all senses! Such a masterpiece.

amazingly underrated song by an amazingly underrated 80's band
just saw them live at house of blues. my first time seeing them and really turned me into their music
***** I grew up in the 80's and they never got as big as they should have based on how good they were. You are talking out your ass hen you say that I "don't know of them that well", you fucking little hipster douchebag.
+wildblue67 The movie was awesome. Probably the best soundtrack for any film...really added to the atmosphere of the film.
Underrated movie too

It truly is---this came out when I was in junior high, and I loved the unusual rhythm and beats of it.
One of the best car chase scenes which is also underrated. Plus people also forget John Turturro was great in this too not just Dafoe and Petersen.

Tried it myself and I wholly concur! Excellent! Easily one of the best soundtracks of all time. Especially enjoy "Dance Hall Days".
Back in 1987, I paid about $22 for this CD when it first came out. I'd do it again!! Still one my favorite soundtracks of all time!
Great song and the whole film soundtrack was awesome. I can't believe how young William Petersen and Willem Dafoe look.
“Right there, fella!”
I have the vinyl of this
Soundtrack - the film is one of the best of the. 80’s.😎
What a killer movie and a kick ass sound track it rates high all time for soundtracks.
hi
To this day, To Live and Die in LA is one of the best films I've ever seen. There was just something so raw and visceral about it. Plus the entire soundtrack is Wang Chung! 🔥
this part is so so moving : I wonder why we waste our lives here
When we could run away to paradise
But I am held in some invisible vice
And I can't get away
To live and die in L.A.
The time of the 80s everything had its magic and its essence especially in the films of: Action, Series B, Slasher, comedy, Martial Arts. Without a doubt, the music of the time was a fundamental part of that mix with the cinema and the result was wonderful. 100% recommended movie

Wang Chung ain't nuthin' ta fuck with.
Pure 80's contemporary pop/rock at it's best, takes me back to the good ol' days of the golden age of modern contemporary music. I ❤️ Wang Chung. 😌💭🎶🎧🎹🎸🥁🎷🎸🎶🥰🥰🥰
I was never a Wang Chung fan, but I could listen to this song again and again. One of my all time favorites.
To Live and Die in L.A one of my favourite if not my favourite film of all time. 70’s & 80’s such great film decades.
It was like Miami Vice, the Movie, only better...

Definitely among the best cop movies of the 80s!!
YEAH I AGREE THANKS FOR YOUR VIEWPOINT
Jeff Costello I agree.
Undeniably.
True !
Jeff C.What about the car chase??One of the best ever.Only McQueen"s in Bullit was better!!I know u remember that one!!
Willem never disappoints. Great under rated movie

This movie is a true classic. This song is awesome.
Revisit the film. It is an absolute classic, not meant for an 8 year old.
Watching it now!
We all did it lol
Top 10 Crime Movie.
Your taste is out your ass.
@@xhris420 lay off the laundry detergent buddy, shits not good for you
LOVE this song
I caught this movie on TV last night. Forgot what a great song this is. Happy to find this video. Love it!!!
Wang Chung sightings are as rare as a left-handed Steinberger bass.
one of my favorite songs EVER. Simply brilliant. They did not get their due
Hi Barbara,hope you’re okay ?
Released as a single in the US in September 1985 and in the UK in February 1986.
