This was one of THE best episodes of the Tonight show I have ever seen. Only next to Jimmy Stewart reading his poem about his dog named Bow that died...even Johnny...known for his stoic appearance at all times shed a tear...no other late nite tv ever compares....because we only have celebrities not really stars and those with heart. Great episode...thanks for posting it. :)
These guys were genius because they actually cared about their craft. They knew how to hone themselves and have an absolute blast doing it. Talent as precious as this will never be seen again.
I surely did not go down through all this but I'm 57 and I remember this type of JC with a passion. Unfortunately today the audience is lost. We all seem to be about ourselfs. RELAX! is so gone. This is the most funny and spontaneous type stuff you'll ever encounter. It is so unfortunate that everyone involved here is long gone. Thanx to people like you, regardless of you really know it's worth, Thank you.
I saw that episode live and years later I saw it on DVD. One of the better known classic Johnny Carson episodes. I always felt like I was a fly on a wall watching famous people at a party instead of just watching TV. Johnny was that kind of talk show host we might never see again
simply the best! I watch this and laugh harder than I do watching anything these days. Carson was a legend and this clip was the best. rip all of you, you are ALL missed
I love Johnny Carson and his shows. Great entertainment and it was not full of the garbage that today's so-call shows have. He had class and his guests were equally talented in their respects. This was a show of pure entertainment and that was why Johnny was so successful. I miss the good old days of late night shows.
Has to be one of the funnies clips from talk shows ever. I've seen it at least 20 times and have to laugh every time. Such amazing timing on George Gobel's part.
In late 60s as a 10 yr old I wired up my tiny TV so I could watch Carson late night with those little earpieces. Split wire from speaker into 2 so it filled your head with sound ! heheh. Mom caught me a few times... but after a while dad said, "I'll go see if he's still up"... and for years and years he would open the door and just smile... and tell mom that I was asleep. Learned so much watching Johnny and the greatest comedians ever. Thanks dad ! ;-)
you will never see that wonderful talent again anywhere and what tributes to great artists,im so proud to have lived in those days,we had great times seeing them and listening to them,im from scotland and i loved them, david r gow.
This was adlib comedy at it's finest.......I remember when this show aired. I wish we had comedy like this today. RIP Guys......You still make me laugh till I hurt.
I remember watching this show. It was the first time my dad let me stay up that late. He said OK because all 3 of these guests were Ohio natives, and Gobel was from my home town. It was mesmerizing. These guys just knew how to have fun.
"... Where's the guy you talk to?" XD Stuff like this just warms my old heart. Dean walking out, big as life with a cigarette and a beer. And everybody was on -- Gobel's killing Johnny, Dean's dropping ash in Gobel's drink, and Bob Hope just keeps cranking the zingers (this is one of my favorite clips of Hope because he's just so in the zone). Priceless. Thank you for the upload.
"Did you ever get the feeling that the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?" One of the best comedic lines ever!! (And, yes. I have felt that way sometimes!) I date myself, but I watched this show when it was originally aired and I don't think I had ever laughed so hard in my life! And, it is STILL funny!!
Comedy is timing. You either have it, or you don't. These guys all have it. If you don't appreciate it, you don't really know comedy. There are some great comedians today as well. Each generation has its share. But it was much harder to get in the business back then. There were much fewer opportunities to perform. So, naturally, the quality of those who did make it was much greater than it is today. Today, if you can do anything at all, you can have success. That is the good thing and that is the bad thing as well.
Timing can be developed, but it takes work. It helps when you work with a partner. Having no partner is one thing that makes stand up more difficult. About the time this was taped, opportunity for a good career in show business had declined because people were staying home more and watching television rather than going to nightclubs and the theater. Before the public became primarily home-bound, there were actually more opportunities to perform and have a real career, with an agent and good pay. Those who were fortunate enough to make it to film and/or television naturally had much bigger careers than those who did not.
George Gobel is one of the most underrated comedians of all time. Great timing, deadpan delivery & great at improvisation. I could probably mention his name to 100 people and would be lucky if 1 person knew who he was Now, so many comedians have 3 or 4 successful movies before they become tiresome. Then they become box office poison. This was when comedy was an art, not an occupation.
robert szvetics I saw this show live, because I never ever missed George when he came on Carson. I was pretty upset because I thought Dean was going to steal all of George's time spot, but he made it a classic. I was learning to play guitar in '69, and George played when he first made appearances on Carson. I am 60 now, and many of my favorites are gone.
John Arnold I know. Guys like Jonathan Winters, Jackie Gleason & Art Carney. Check out the Jonathan Winters & Art Carney skit on UA-cam - Also Jonathan Winters did some great skits with Dean Martin & Jack Paar - Also on UA-cam. We can't bring them back. We can only remember & enjoy, as a tribute to them. Best wishes - Ted
That was rip roaring funny. What's amazing is how Johnny acknowledges the craziness with the comment "exactly what time did I lose control of the show". Which to me was spot on just like Hope, Martin and Gobel's performance.
I actually saw that show live. I was 18. What this tells me is we do not have performers anywhere near this caliber today. Very sad. I spend my TV time watching the Property Brothers.
I have watched this clip many times. It always makes me laugh. These guys make it look so easy and they do that because they all have a talent for getting people to laugh. The brown shoes line is priceless.
Those were the days! Before "political correctness", smoking and drinking were part of enjoying life - and laughter came quick and easy, with real humor (not simply cursing). Thanks so much for posting this - it is an era that is missed.
Truly a golden era for entertainment. The guys of those two decades invented swagger. True comedians that didn't have to drop F bombs. Insanely talented and they set the bar and it has still been rarely topped. I hated growing up then though. Even though I never smoked I had a 2 pack a day habit.
I actually remember watching this show. When Johnny came out to Ca. it was a big deal. I was 16 at the time and just happened to catch this one as my Grandfather was up watching it. We both laughed so hard, my G-Dad had tears in his eyes.
The only reason Dean was on here and this show was as crazy as it was George Gobble gave some of his air time to Dean. When George came out he picked up on the craziness and kept going. The best tonight show ever.
@@toniwilson1579 That’s true - @9.35 you can hear Dean saying thanking George “for giving me your spot, it was very sweet of you.” It’s that little exchange that makes me feel that that they had maybe worked out the cigarette routine backstage beforehand. It’s possibly an old skit that they both knew from working the clubs for many years. Certainly Dean used it a few times on his TV show over the years, usually with Ken Lane on the piano/music room set (“I’m gonna make you a general!”), but I’ve also seen Sinatra do the same ‘bit’ with him on another episode, in the ‘mystery voice’ sketch.
Another thing about this era is that everybody loves it when somebody else scores. They have fun with each other, but the competition isn't there. They all lose it when Gobel drops his "brown shoes" line, and nobody has to "one up" him. Great stuff!
I am sure it is only me but Dean was a really handsome man in his day and this video is truly the best. George Gobel had me laughing literally in tears and no one can discount Mr. Carson's wit and inprov when needed. We don't see this caliber of talent any more. Thank you Griffin Evans for saving it for posterity. Great flick. Still laughing.
When you've done comedy long enough (real comedy, that is), ad-libbing comes fairly easy. It can even become inconvenient because you get to the point that almost everything is funny. These masters of comedy, Bob Hope in particular, worked constantly for decades on their craft. In present day entertainment, it is a lost art. It is truly a blessing to be able to watch these fabulous funny men at work. The title for this is very fitting, since real talent is seldom encouraged or sought after in today's industry.
I remember watching this show when it came on. You didn't miss Johnny Carson when he came to Ca. I was an insomniac teenager and this was just plain hilarious!
This was probably the best Tonight Show ever. There were something like 8 guests that night, Robert Wagner and Carol Wayne came on after this, and Buddy Rich and Louis Belson came on before. It was really exceptional.
I think Gobel realizes Dean is flicking his ashes in his drink, but he is playing along with it. Gobel laughs pretty hard when Carson says "Exactly what time did I lose control of this show?" It's fun to hear Judy Carne howling with laughter in the background.
Those WERE the days!! When talent REALLY WAS TALENT!! Poor ppl. of THIS generation,HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY MISSED!! All they have is mannaj, miley cyrus..sad sad sad!!maybe Im just too damned old for what IS passing for TALENTED ENTERTAINERS..aahh well at least I got the memories the ones I CAN REMEMBER..
- I say the hell with the doctor. - I missed my own show? - Without me you're show wold have been nothing. - I have a drink or two, on occasions, like when the Sun goes down ... or VW drives by - then I fired up pretty good. I have never been known to touch a drop during total eclipse. - You mean you fight pilots. - If i'm lying, I'm dying. - You remember the war, it was all over the papers. - Not one Japanese aircraft got past Tulsa.
when America had talent.......never thought I'd feel it, but how TRUE!!
how lucky I was to have experienced! thanks for posting & reminding!
George Gobel was the sweetest, kindness man. Always polite. The world sure could use a lot more like him.
These guys were genius because they actually cared about their craft. They knew how to hone themselves and have an absolute blast doing it. Talent as precious as this will never be seen again.
Can't be or learn to be this talented starring at a phone all day. This is called the ART of conversation
I surely did not go down through all this but I'm 57 and I remember this type of JC with a passion. Unfortunately today the audience is lost. We all seem to be about ourselfs. I've seen this several time and laugh out loud every time. Great show.
I saw that episode live and years later I saw it on DVD. One of the better known classic Johnny Carson episodes. I always felt like I was a fly on a wall watching famous people at a party instead of just watching TV. Johnny was that kind of talk show host we might never see again
This is the funniest thing I think I've ever seen in my life I could watch it over and over again and laugh my ass off
I remember watching this live with my family, we were rolling on the floor laughing.
simply the best! I watch this and laugh harder than I do watching anything these days. Carson was a legend and this clip was the best. rip all of you, you are ALL missed
I remember when this came on that night watching it live... the days of class and talent are long over
We were so blessed with such talent, I am glad that I was a generation that got to enjoy these awesome people and their entertainment!
I love Johnny Carson and his shows. Great entertainment and it was not full of the garbage that today's so-call shows have. He had class and his guests were equally talented in their respects. This was a show of pure entertainment and that was why Johnny was so successful. I miss the good old days of late night shows.
I have this and never get tired of watching the whole show...Brilliant...you will never see talent and class like this anymore...
I have watched this several times and it's still as funny as the first time I saw it. Classic true talent
thats real talent and comedy. I miss the good ole days.
Has to be one of the funnies clips from talk shows ever. I've seen it at least 20 times and have to laugh every time. Such amazing timing on George Gobel's part.
they were all HILARIOUS!!! I love Dean's limerick

Thanks dad ! ;-)
My absolute favorite, I gut laugh every time. Classic

When did we lose it? These were very clean, funny, talented celebrities. Miss them a lot.
Forced to be clean for TV, you mean. Their stage acts were quite different.
This is funny, their all boozin it up! This is some good old school comedy. Thanks for posting!
The very best live broadcast ever!
Talent when it was talent it doesn't get any better than this show!!!!
They all 4 together are such a riot! Love em!
one of the best lines (and entire segment) in talk show history
Pure Genius, ty for sharing.
That was a fun night for Johnny and everyone lucky enough to have seen that live.
Who would have thought George would have stolen the show. The Tulsa thing was hysterical !
I remember watching this show. It was the first time my dad let me stay up that late. He said OK because all 3 of these guests were Ohio natives, and Gobel was from my home town. It was mesmerizing. These guys just knew how to have fun.
Fantastic. I could have watched much more of this.
"... Where's the guy you talk to?" XD
Stuff like this just warms my old heart.

I was born on this day! Thanks for the upload!
The best of the best...this is wonderful.
Probably the greatest show out of all that Johnny hosted from 62-92.
Johnny Carson who did stand up himself had a star-struck adoration for the great comics. Look at him here - he's in comedy heaven.
Those were four wonderfully talented men. Will never see the likes of them again!
Watching this proves the greatest generation was also the coolest!
3 of the funniest guys ever, true comedians, thanks
Those were the best times in TV.
this is I think the all-time funniest episode of Carson and wow that's saying a lot - wish we could have had the rest of it but thx for posting :)
George Gobel is one of the most underrated comedians of all time. Great timing, deadpan delivery & great at improvisation. I could probably mention his name to 100 people and would be lucky if 1 person knew who he was

Theo Lamp Well, I pretty much agree, but ole George didn't make many hit movies.
Theo Lamp i agee sir lonesome george said the greatest line in show bussiness history.
robert szvetics I saw this show live, because I never ever missed George when he came on Carson. I HOPE GEORGE DIDNT DRINK FROM HIS CUP AFTER DINO DUMPED HIS ASHES IN IT

Thank you - more than you may realize, thank you!
I sure that George's "brown shoes" line was one of the best in Carson's Tonight Show history. Classic.
marvelous, all of them. Personally the brown shoes well polished here. Makes the tuxedo look good.
Have seen this several times and it still makes me laugh, true talent by men who worked at their craft. So much funnier than what is on TV today.
Truly a golden era for entertainment. The guys of those two decades invented swagger. True comedians that didn't have to drop F bombs. Insanely talented and they set the bar and it has still been rarely topped. I hated growing up then though. Even though I never smoked I had a 2 pack a day habit.
I miss Johnny and the old "Tonight Show".
Holy crap I almost pissed myself... man these guys were good... Just NATURALS at it.. like they were in a Bar, just talking & telling stories...
I actually remember watching this show. When Johnny came out to Ca. it was a big deal. I was 16 at the time and just happened to catch this one as my Grandfather was up watching it. We both laughed so hard, my G-Dad had tears in his eyes.
Take a good look..We will never see talent like this again.
This humor needs to come back ASAP! Natural talent like these guys is just incredible! Needed Bob Hope to loosen up a little though.
Probably the best Tonight Show ever.
Gobel's appearance was just brilliant. He topped them all.

Hilarious, one of the best clips!! Back when there was some genuine talent in Hollywood.
thanks for posting this. Haven't laughed that hard in a while.
LOVE the title..WHEN America had talent...so true. You should trademark that.
I remember seeing this show, and cracking up at Gobel's line.
very classic memories...and some good comments by babyhowdy and di Sullivan....
and this is my favorite Johnny Carson clip ......EVER! I love the reference to brown shoes! that describes what George Gobel was.
so friggin awesome; great guys.
When I get to heaven, I want to sit at THEIR table. :)
Yea,this comedy had a touch of class!
God Bless ALL of them!!!! Well, old John!
i FORGOT HOW REALLY FUNNY George Gobel was, amazing!!
Another thing about this era is that everybody loves it when somebody else scores. They have fun with each other, but the competition isn't there. They all lose it when Gobel drops his "brown shoes" line, and nobody has to "one up" him. Great stuff!
+R Pryce Exactly! Bob Hope has heard every joke known to man and when he gives a belly laugh and applauds, you know George hit a home run.
I remember seeing this as it was broadcast.
THE GREAT ONES TOGETHER
These guys were f'ing BRILLIANT.
I am sure it is only me but Dean was a really handsome man in his day and this video is truly the best. thank you for the upload wish i had the whole show
This is probably the funniest Tonight Show EVER. Lonesome George was my favorite of all the comedians from that era.
You will NEVER see this much talent or as funny people on The Tonight Show now days.
Incredibly talented, charismatic and lovable alcoholic smokers. Ordinary alcoholic smokers wouldn't draw an audience of 100,000,000.
A comic, and show biz, gem! Late-night will never see the likes of this again!
I miss them.
Iv'e seen it ten times and it always makes me laugh.
Nothing much better then that !
Bob Hope and Dean Martin exchanging drinks! Awesome!
I'm originally from Tipton, Oklahoma...(between Frederick and altus ) my dad was stationed in Tipton during the war and he knew George gobel ......
Excellent!!!
Those WERE the days!! When talent REALLY WAS TALENT!! Poor ppl. of THIS generation,HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY MISSED!! Too bad none of them are with us anymore. R.I.P. gentlemen, you cheered up a lot of people back in your day.
I never cared much for Bob Hope, his act was too "canned" but in these situations he is incredible!
My Dad just loved George Gobel!
