The song was actually inspired by Tyler getting his Car Radio stolen in college at Ohio State - but the song is more about what it represented to him - his ability to escape from what he had going on in his life - so a person's "Car Radio" can be different for everyone - could be working out, reading, doing UA-cam reactions, etc - so if that's taken away from you, can you handle what's really going on in your life
Also as someone who already suffered from depression myself, getting stuck with your own thoughts can be a very dangerous situation. Like Chester once wisely said, "this place is a bad neighborhood" pointing to his head.
I had my radio stolen once. The deafening silence on the drive home really put a lot of things into perspective.
I hope whoever stole it enjoyed the five finger death punch CD that was in it, or sold it for a good meal.

You guys figured it out; in silence, he's stuck with his thoughts which can get really dark and scary. He puts the face cover on when in the presence of others in order to feel emotionally safe. The whole thing is a metaphor for how we distract ourselves from ourselves and the racing thoughts we feel we can't control as well as the anxiety we have when feeling vulnerable. At least that is my take on it. Gotta do some more 21 Pilots! Good reaction!
This is my first exposure to 21 Pilots and I must say that this tune is the most horribly-beautiful, painfully-accurate description of intrusive thoughts I've ever heard. Even the fidgety-hand. The palpable anxiety. I really need to look into these guys!

As someone who has struggled with depression and suicidal ideation most of my life, I love this song. It's such an accurate representation of mental health struggles.

Lead singer has an amazing gift in terms of musical artistry and dark complex lyrical content within his songs. Probably the most vital band of the last decade. They have many popular songs that are overplayed and people mistake them as "mainstream" u know - poppy sounding, the shit u hear on radio. Not at all. This is probably the only band in the world who has all of their songs sounding different YET THEY are all so good. If you want to hear rollercoaster of sounds where each song sounds different. Try : Morph, My Blood, Bandito, Ode To Sleep, Doubt, Fairly Local, The Hype (Berlin) , maaaan i could go on for days. This band is definetly super impressive. It will grow on you just dont stop listening to them

If you like the diversity and lyrical complexity I can also recommend Ren, he's far from mainstream or overplayed, but I have found quite a few clikkies (such as myself) really enjoy his work, because it shares some similar qualities with TØPs catalogue.

Y'all need to understand that this band, consisting of only two members, does not have a genre. No one reacting to them on UA-cam has ever put them in one category solely. Josh Dunn is on drums and is damn good! Tyler Joseph plays several instruments, and writes all their songs. Every song they have sounds completely different. Y'all want bars? Check out Lane Boy. This song is a true story about how Tyler's car radio was actually stolen and he couldn't afford to replace it and he realised how much he used music to distract him from his thoughts. I love how they use their songs to encourage people to think and not try to avoid your thoughts and problems but confront and fight against them and question the things other people and even your own brain tells you. They really have amazing energy live, would have been cool to be at this show.
Guys, you need to do more 21 Pilots for sure, they can't be boxed into one genre and there's so many bangers. I slept on them for years cuz I didn't take them serious. Now they're y favorite band for sure

Twenty One Pilots are amazing, I am personally not that big of a fan of their music in this stage. Lead singer was very depressed but other than this period they are amazing IMO. Saw them live like a month ago and they perform like nobody else.

I loved watching all of your faces go from smiling, to concern/thoughtful, especially my man in the Cant Fold shirt, your face was so serious and thoughtful the whole time 🥰 I’ve been a fan of them for years, for one because the beats are seriously amazing, and two, because they sing about mental illness and the struggles of it, and that hits seriously close to home for me. Their music has helped a lot of people, especially young adults, through some very dark times.

I took the song as we listen to music to distract ourselves. Without it, when we are sitting in silence, our mind begins thinking about everything, things we like and things we dislike. It makes you look at yourself and judge yourself and everything around you. If you are in a bad place, the mind thinking can be a dangerous thing.

Saw them in Anaheim after dying to see them for years , best day of my life. Twenty One Pilots music affected me so deeply because of all the crap that goes on in my mind for so long and Tyler’s life experiences and lyricism is so just like amazing and its helped me know I’m not alone during tough times. There was a time I knew every single one of their songs word for word, I forgot a little of some songs that I don’t listen to as often but for the most part I still do. I screamed and sang my heart out at the concert haha. 100% recommend their music.

Went to my first twenty one pilots concert in pittsburgh and it was tremendous, Stressed out got them famous for sure, but Car Radio and Trees are two of my favorite songs. Definitely gives a mental health relation vibe. I recommend Stressed Out, Trees, Morph, No Chances, Redecorate, Formidable, etc.

Damn the fact that y’all reacted to this song. Car radio is the first song I heard from them on 8tracks when I was 12 lmao and this band got me through some shittttt man. I saw them live multiple times and met Tyler Joseph (the singer), and they honestly have such amazing songs. This band has so many gems, my favourites back in the day were this one, addict with a pen, migraine and trapdoor if you guys wanna react to more of their music.

It does have layers. Yeah the car radio is good distraction from his own thoughts, which turn dark and depressive (like hating yourself, your life, regretting your lost dreams, the lost send of who you wanted to be versus who you currently are, etc). But there’s also that struggle with needing to find the balance of staying awake/aware enough to know your own thoughts so you stay true to yourself (ie faith and hope) without getting lost in fear (ie self-annihilation)… and also not getting lost in the mask we put on to pretend we’re ok in the world when we’re not (ex he performs and parties in a mask but then is empty, and alone at the end and appears to fall off the end of the stage like he’s given up and exited the world… which no one would expect him to feel like given his fame and popularity). One of their best videos I have seen.
