I'm honestly impressed, I think you're the only person I've ever seen having that sort of reaction about Endeavor.
Usually when watching this set of episodes everyone has a pretty similar reaction of visceral hate/disgust towards his actions and that's about it. Which yeah, it's fair considering that we don't know anything about him and so far he's been shown as an abusive asshole and a generally unpleasant person to talk to.
I think you're the only person I've ever heard saying "Well, in that particular moment he picked the best solution available"
Of course it's important to remember that he was the cause of that "particular moment" in the first place, but still. It's interesting that you didn't just say "Wow, what an horrible person" and ended your analysis there but went beyond that.

Yeah, but I disagree with the not evil part. Maybe we have different definitions of evil, but like you said, Endeavor practically drove her to that point through an arranged inescapable marriage and years of physical and mental abuse. I find it difficult to believe the No.2 hero doesn't realize that's wrong but he still did it anyway and for an incredibly selfish and pointless reason.
Idk fully, I'll need to wait for more plot on Endeavor to be sure of what I think, but currently, he definitely fits my bill of evil.

Great point. If Endeavor was a more pathological abuser, he might simply have killed her for damaging his masterpiece. In hindsight, it hints at a man who's capable of making rational decisions under all the jealousy. Maybe Endeavor's arc was set up a lot earlier than I thought 🤔

    • @Italianchef26

@@Flweem If there's one thing Endeavor is good at is fighting and training people. He might've caused lots of grief and mental trauma to Shoto, but Shoto IS strong because of the training Endeavor forced upon him and I'm pretty sure Endeavor knows how to train someone to their limit without actually seriously injuring their body because that would be counter productive.
Yeah he treated Shoto like shit but I'm willing to bet he never actually gave him any lasting physical injury. Endeavor seems like a very "Might makes right" kind of person, he probably thought that as long as Shoto was in good physical condition everything else (his emotions and mental health) didn't really matter.
I mean, at the end of the day, the one who actually gave Shoto a permanent scar wasn't Endeavor (I know it's much more complicated than this, but you get my point)

@@leobriccocola8141 I genuinely think we are seeing the end of a slow spiral that has changed him so slowly Endeavour himself really doesn't realise it. He *is* the number two hero, if he wasn't serious about it he wouldn't be here. All those kids, that were "in another world" are no doubt previous attempts of his to produce a child whose quirks are in complete balance. Like Alicia pointed out, their hair has a bit of both, but none of them had that near perfect split down the middle Shoto has. Endeavour has probably been doing this for years, most likely becoming more and more desperate as time went on, willing to put a five year old through the wringer because he has already waited atleast what, maybe decades for Shoto? I imagine he has become more and more cold (heh) and cruel as time went on.
He is still a piece of shit for doing all that, but at the same time he clearly isn't doing it because he likes it. I hope they dive deeper into his motivations and not keep him as just this clearly abusive selfish piece of shit with no moral greys.

2 things about this fight that are so important/I love:
1: Todoroki finally smiling as he forgets about his father for a moment and just has fun with his friend
2: The "thank you" as Todoroki lets his final attack go off - there's so much emotion and relief in it. You can tell just from the way it's said that Deku just made a loyal-ass friend for life

Rei needs to be recognised for what she is: barely any better than Enji. He could have been a victim of childhood abuse for all we know, most narcissists are victims of that. Rei is also a victim, but a victim who, thanks to the anime style of holding long on single frames, seems to have known full well it was her son there. Shoto shouldn’t apologise to her. I almost think after that that maybe she deserves Enji. 😢

To say she deserves what she got is really shallow, Shoto doesn't owe her an apology but she most definitely did not deserve being bought as a teenager and forced to watch her children be abused and neglected.
You became abusive as a result of abuse, therefore you deserved to be abused; that's not only unreasonable but grossly inhumane especially in the context of children.

But yes, Izuku breaking his already broken fingers, using his cheek etc etc all to push Shoto over the edge, make him realize that his power is HIM first and foremost, while actually trying to win, that's something.
What is "fun" with Izuku and the way he uses his power is that he breaks himself, he is the personification of the hero who sacrifices for others. I've seen a lot of anime and I've rarely seen a hero symbolizing it so much.

    so to make things worse:
those kids playing outside in todoroki's flashbac? you're right, they ARE related to him. They are all his siblings. Endeavour basically cares jackshit about them because they aren't 'perfect' like shouto is. So they DON'T get the brunt of his abuse and harshness. The implication seems to be endeavour just kept pumping out kid after kid after kid after kid until he got one he deemed the best one and lavished all his attention and will onto him.
Todoroki isn't allowed to play with his own brothers and sisters because its 'more important' for him to train and get stronger. And the rest are left alone because they aren't 'important', they don't 'matter', not in endeavours eyes.

Really good point regarding Endeavor sending his wife to a hospital after the incident. He was at fault, but most abusers hitting such a crisis point would probably have either tightened their control even more, or simply killed her for it. You've shed some new light on Endeavor, in retrospect.
One notable thing that someone pointed out way back when: if you look at the scene with the kettle, only Shoto's left side is visible through the door.
His initial telling of the incident makes it sound like his mother intentionally scarred his left side, but when you look at the situation it seems a lot more likely that his mom, in the moment, thought that Endeavor himself had caught her talking about his abuse and begging for help, and she might have panicked and thrown the kettle at the door.
The Todoroki family situation is a bad one. I'll be interested to hear more of your thoughts as the show progresses, and on what it tries to say through its portrayal of the Todoroki dynamic and others!

The problem with Endeavor is that he's so narrow-sighted, like he has his eye on his goal and works to get there, but he didn't stop to think about whether the way he went about it was wrong and the consequences his actions had on his family until it was too late for his eldest son, so then he just doubles down on Todoroki because he doesn't want to admit that he was wrong, either.
I honestly knew very little about him before and didn't think I'd like him even in his redemption arc, but I do love the direction they took with it. He's not instantly forgiven, his past comes to haunt him, it's revealed to the public, and he has to face what he did to his oldest son. But even though he was hell on his family, he did save a lot of people and inspire others to become true heroes (Hawks) plus he's a surprisingly good mentor, so you know he had the potential, he was just too obsessed with beating All Might and foced that dream on his kids when he felt he couldn't reach it, and in the end, became No. 1 anyway not because he deserved it but because All Might was forced to retire.

I saw one comment mention this but I wanted to as well. (Not really spoiler cuz it never gets mentioned in the anime) but todoroki's mom emidietly regrets what she does and tries to use her ice to heal him and thats how he gets his scar, from the freeze burn since his left side is resistant to heat the water (i assume don't quote me on this) didn't really burn him that bad so it's really tragic when you think about it

It's so refreshing to see someone actually acknowledge that Endeavor did the right thing with sending his wife to the hospital. So many people just pile on and think he was wrong to even do that.
It doesn't help that Endeavor was written way too hard and edgy early on, like what happened with Bakugo (example: Bakugo telling Deku to go kill himself for being Quirkless). Or that more context and such is added later because Todoroki is a trauma baby and even in a shonen show one shonen speech won't fix him (whether that makes you revise your opinion or not is a person to person thing).
He's made to be hateable here, but seeing someone notice the parts that are actually good in him rather than only seeing negative from all his actions is super rare. I was binging your stuff, but this is the thing that cemented me hitting the subscribe button.

Endeavor is a man that has allowed himself to be utterly CONSUMED by obsession and ambition for decades at this point, whatever good intentions he started his hero career with have been twisted and made ugly.
I don't think that's a burn mark on Shoto's face, that side of him is adapted to produce heat and flame to a ridiculous degree. Boiling water wouldn't really do anymore than sting pretty badly, I'm pretty sure that discoloration is the kind you get when skin is suddenly exposed to an extreme drop in temperature.
Which to my mind means Shoto's mom snapped out of her "episode" and tried to cool down where she poured the boiling water, only she prolly panicked while doing so and over did it.

"so i put her in a hospital" can be understood as he beat the shit out of her which he didnt do. i also want to applaud my hero for not going with the easy terrible father, good mother trope. they could have left it at abusive husband and father who beats his kdis and his wife but to go as far as have the mother burn her child with boiling water is something a lot of animes dont do. we are talking mental issues as a result of an abusive relationship that resulted into abusing your child as well. that is more common than people think. w writing

    • @thederp9309
      @thederp9309 Рік тому

That isn’t sociopathic behaviour. Sociopathic characteristics include for example, the lack or little regard to empathy. It’s anti social personality disorder not in the sense that you don’t like people but that you feel more people oriented emotions to an extreme degree which includes less impulse control, manipulative behaviour because of this. Deku is not doing those things because of sociopathic traits that are the extreme of no empathy that he has little value put in other people but the extreme of having so much empathy that he would throw away all self preservation to the point of harming himself. Both are extreme, one being the complete lack of care for other people and the other being the obsession of caring about other people, both are destructive to a certain degree because they are the extreme of both sides of the same coin that they end up looking similar.

You are going to love SO MANY characters in this show. It's one of the reasons I love it. A ton of characters who are compelling in their own ways. Or even must fun to watch.
I'm going to let you speculate.
Huh, I don't recognize the blonde in the teacher's box.
Kiri is the resident positive masculinity of 1A.
Bakugo may not know how to interact in a healthy way, but he has decent test scores and a solid grasp of tactics. Deku is smarter, but Bakugo is not an idiot.
Yeah.... Midoriya got a really dangerous idea. Bad enough he breaks something with each shot, now he's firing them off again.
If you want happy go lucky, do not watch Demon Slayer. I think it's one of the better shonens with My Hero, but it will mess you up emotionally too.
We're happy to be back to watching it with you.
Dickhead but not evil for committing his wife.... fair enough.
This is some of the best animated action in the show. And there are a lot of moments, but they REALLY popped off for this. Helps that a stupid movie wasn't sapping resources away from the main product.
Deku could have won, but he's so committed to helping his class mates. Sure, he's not throwing, but he just couldn't let himself wait until after exploiting Shoto's emotional handicap. And like you said, he had to take an L.
