Great reaction as always. The 2x8 video is still* actually 2x9 for some reason. There's no Hatsume in the video despite the thumbnail. That reaction is not currently on UA-cam. The episode name is right though.
@@paulgaston I believe this may be an issue on your end somehow, episode 8 has the ep 8 thumbnail of hatsume, and episode 9 has the thumbnail of Uraraka.
This is one episode where I think the Japanese version is better, as someone who usually watches dubs. “I’m not done yet,” just doesn’t have the same weight as “where are you looking.” Also shows that for all their differences, there’s a reason Kacchan and Deku were friends, and that’s the fact that Deku also doesn’t like his opponent not giving his all, or at least not focusing on him in a fight.
Small detail but I love how the left side of Shoto's costume gets completely destroyed by his fire power, implying he was so sure he'd never use his left side that he didn't bother requesting a fire proof costume.
It's only their gym outfits. That's why it isn't fire proof. If you have seen this series you would understand that due to another characters power you learn in the end of season 3 and the start of 4
@@leenotaf specialist equipment such as support items but normal clothing no. Look at the end of season 3 mirio togata *lemillion* it perfectly explains more about it
@@leenotaf All Might mentions that every student submits a costume request form as part of the application process to UA and they can keep submitting new ones as they discover new details about their quirks. I assume these are taken into consideration for their gym costumes since those are provided for them by the school and do seem at least a little tailored to the individual student: e.g. Ida's having shorter legs so his engines aren't blocked, Ojiro's having an opening for his tail, Mina's not melting from her own acid, etc.
I’m in my 20’s and I damn near tear up every time, too 😂 From the “It’s your power, isn’t it?” line all the way through to the end of the fight. Never fails to get me.
For me it's the flashback that line triggers. Just, the whole thing. It's such a beautiful scene and sentiment, the tears tend to come around the time Rei says 'you're not a prisoner of your lineage' before I have to wipe them away just in time to see Todoroki explode.
And here's exactly why All Might saw a real hero and his successor in Deku. Deku isn't just selfless and stands up for what's right, he also inspires people. He helped his classmates countless times, his courage impressed even All Might, and he helped Todoroki see his quirk as something more than just a reminder of his father. Being a symbol of peace isn't just about beating up villains, it's also about inspiring hope, and that's what Deku does.
@@monkeyeknom527 No doubt but neither All Might nor Montana have met him yet so kind of a moot point. Can't blame All Might for not giving All For One to someone he didn't yet know when he first met Midoriya. The early, or in this case lucky, bird catches the worm.
This fight is the perfect encapsulation of what makes Deku herooic. He doesn't even think about how it hurts his odds of winning. His first instinct is to push Todoroki to be his best. He's fighting to save him and when Todoroki lights that fire, Deku's smile is the most genuine All Might smile we've seen from him yet. He's not fighting the match for his career, he's already being a hero.
Oh Bakugo is definitely projecting. He's just as much about analysing the people around him, especially if they might end up being an opponent. He just more of the, ironically, cold calculator, as opposed to Deku's fervent note taking.
I'm not sure if Montana realizes this but, Shoto having polar opposite dual quirks not only makes him more powerful in a general sense. It also allows him to surpass his current natural limits by using either element to balance the others damage on the body out. It's a really cool aspect of this episode that we get to watch Deku & Bakugo talk/think about ones natural limits regarding quirk usage and then later watching a "manufactured" hero just blow that entire logical argument out of the water and the cruel truthful reality of quirk marriages "working"
Definitely in the top episodes, but personally, there is a certain fight in the next season that plays with the tension and emotions to an incredible degree for me
I think Shoto placing the blame for his injury on Endeavor (correctly) at least partly comes from hearing his mom saying it’s the association with Endeavor that’s causing her problems
Montanas psychoanalysis of the characters are so fun to listen to. I always end up seeing the characters in a different perspective because of her and it's so fun
I really feel the show picks up this season since it starts to really dive into the ideas behind being a "hero": -Why does somebody choose to be a hero? -Does someone who puts personal feelings or motives ahead of the greater good deserve to call themselves a hero? -Should a hero abide purely by the laws and expectations of society, or do what they feel is right? We see a lot of that in Todoroki's storyline here. It's one thing to talk about it in the context of a spectator sport, but say he stuck to his guns on never using his fire as a professional hero. Would he be right in holding back in using his powers in a life-or-death situation? How would it look if Superman failed to save someone because he just didn't feel like flying? With Deku, we see him ultimately put his desire to help Todoroki overcome his personal issues ahead of the expectation that he do whatever he has to to win the match. Was that the more heroic thing to do, even though it might not take him closer to being All Might's successor in the eyes of the public? Endeavor, being a bad parent, husband, and person aside, is still considered a great hero within the rules of society. Is he the endgame for someone who wants to be a hero solely for the purpose of self-satisfaction?
What makes this fight so good is that it's Deku, a kid who, his whole life wanted a quirk, and was told he'll always be a quirkless nobody who can never be a hero, against Shoto, someone with an amazing ability, and near limitless potential, and he won't even use it. You can imagine how infuriating that is for Deku to see what he's always wanted go to waste. If he's not gonna use his power, why is he even here? That's what makes this fight so impactful.
*Abusive father and favoritism of certain sibling *Scar from a parent in exact spot of their face *Dysfunctional families *fire ability *cold and distance till they warm up to the MC and group *hate their fathers but adored their mothers *separated but then reunited with their mom's *father's forces their moms into arranged marriages I never realize how much Zuko and Todoroki are damn similar😮😮
I used to think Horikoshi definitely took inspiration from ATLA, but there’s SO many similarities, it’s kinda proof he didn’t based on how much research goes into what makes up every character. He’s lucky there’s ENOUGH differences to not be plagiarism. I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed if he watched it, but if he did, I can see him wiping his forehead and saying THAT WAS CLOSE.
Based on your comment, a little recap of this episode: Here's a Shoto. There's a Shoto. And another little Shoto. Icy Shoto. Burning Shoto. Shoto. Shoto. BANG.
How about [REDACTED] and Azula? Other than the inverted gender and who they have a hate boner for, they're almost identical. There are other similarities but to point them out would be spoiling
@@KaempfdogHorikoshi had a small q&a panel at comicon 2018 where he was asked if he took inspiration from ATLA and he responded that he'd never heard of it which makes sense since he only speaks Japanese and ATLA had no full release of any kind in Japan until it came to Netflix in 2020 as Nickelodeon Japan shut down while the show was airing in 2009 iirc. It's more likely he was inspired by Hakuryuu from Magi (a character with family issues, a burn scar over his left eye and heterochromia) or the 90s manga Flames of Recca which has a family of powerful fire users that has a sibling with a burn scar over their and one who's favoured over the others due to their proficiency and other spoiler connections to both series that came after it.
Fun little detail, Todoroki lands a slight touch on Deku and freezes up his arm before getting punched away. Even though it's clearly demonstrated that he could have frozen him entirely from that state, he chose to only freeze Deku's arm and leave this hand free. His already broken arm. Todoroki made a cast for Deku's broken arm so he didn't mess it up more during the fight. His own little way of being nice.
i kinda love how the battles of my hero never go to waste literally every battle of it makes a ntable change , let it be just for the characters included or for the overall story i especially love how from this point on todoroki has a flshback of this fight in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS MOMENTS
Don't get me wrong; All Might vs. Nomu at the end of last season was awesome. However, I feel like this episode was the first indication of how HARD this show would go for action scenes. In terms of animation, music, voice-acting, storytelling; EVERYTHING about this fight and this episode goes beyond.
while Endeavor did get excited about todoroki using his flames so it's understandable why he wouldn't want to use them, it's very powerful I think to emphasize that you shouldn't let your abuser have ANY power over your behavior even if it means you doing something they approve of as long as you are doing it for you they shouldn't matter
I could gush all day about how much I love this episode-the misdirect of Deku’s broken finger countdown, the amazing soaring soundtrack, and then obviously that jaw-dropping, mind-blowing, pure _eye candy_ that was the animation of Shoto powering up his fire attack. The two lines of dialogue that always get my heart racing and my blood pumping are Deku’s “It’s yours! Your quirk, not his!” and Shoto’s “Why are you smiling? With those injuries, in this hopeless situation, you must be crazy. Don’t blame me for what happens next.” I was nervous to see the dub version, cuz the original holds such a special place in my heart. And while the MHA dub has been pretty great so far, I was still worried that the performances wouldn’t be as good, or that they’d change the dialogue. But to my surprise, the dialogue is almost _identical_ to the original, and the performances were some of the best I’ve heard up to this point in the dub. However, in the original Deku says “It’s _your_ power, isn’t it??” instead of “It’s your quirk, not his!”. And honestly I like the fact that it’s phrased as a question. The dub line is like Deku _telling_ Shoto how to feel, but the sub line feels more like Deku reaching out a verbal hand and guiding Shoto to the same conclusion. It’s a very minor, nitpicky little difference, but still. Anyways, I could watch those couple shots of Shoto powering up a fire attack like a million times and never get tired of it. It was like they took an amazing manga panel and animated it in full color at 24 fps. I believe the term for shots like that is “sakuga”, basically referring to specific shots in anime where they pour all their talent, budget, and time in order to make it visually stunning.
Even if I watched this fight so many times I get so excited and get teary eyed seeing Deku breaking his fingers. And I cry everytime Todoroki uses his fire for the first time
Montana is so freaking perceptive. It's amazing. She calls them accurately so many times. I love Kenny's loving husband looks when he KNOWS she totally predicted a bunch of stuff. Love your guys' commentary. You're awesome.
Many people miss this, but at 12:06 Todoroki places ice on Deku's broken arm to ease his pain, and act as a cast. Just shows their dynamic and attention to detail so well
Oh he DEFINITELY has pain tolerance. But he crossed what his body can handle on the freaking 1st move and literally every move after was an adrenaline rush. OFA pushes your body’s limits to infinity and freaking beyond. The kid lifted a truck up a staircase and trash pile to even be CONSIDERED worthy enough to handle OFA. And a fraction of a fraction of it no less.
*The limit to his pain tolerance is almost non existent. If his pain tolerance was almost non existent, he wouldn't be able to move after getting a paper cut.
he’s choosing to use his fire power/full power to be true to his moms side over not using the fire to rebel against his dad. It’s all point of view and he was basically only seeing the fire quirk from his dads pov. Such a great ep
I have watched this episode more times than I can count at this point. It's unreal how emotional and impactful it is. God, I love this series. It just makes you FEEL.
I saw the ending sequence of the fight shared on Twitter when this episode aired and immediately binged to catch up. The animation still gives me chills every time I see it, and Deku calling out "it's yours!" always gets me a little teary-eyed. Easily one of the best episodes of the entire show.
She cracked the code....because Deku never said "this is the story of how I became the number one hero", but the greatest hero....7 yrs in...and my slow self just thought of that lol
While I ultimately prefer the last match, this one is definitely a moment of fame for MHA that even brought Horikoshi to tears seeing it animated. And just like last match…MAN is it complicated. Well, here’s the king of quirks vs the quirk “hand crafted” to match it. So here’s some fun stuff I found. Like any good match, this is less a simple power struggle with an advantage/disadvantage causing a win and more a willpower match. And after seeing this episode and arc a few times…you learn a few things about willpower in general. And it comes down to the difference between what is determination, and what is willpower. There’s a small but subtle difference, and it basically decides who is the stronger character here emotionally, mentally, AND physically. Determination is basically a will to accomplish a goal. Willpower is more accomplishing what is in front of you no matter what regardless of adversity and struggle with no necessary motivation. Soooo who is using what? Todoroki has made the determined pact to become the best hero he can without fire so his dad gets no satisfaction from his rise to power. Deku…while he wants to be a hero simple as that, TAKES IT SO FAR you completely forget that this is SO MUCH his goal, he will cross every barrier, challenge it, cross it, CHALLENGE IT AGAIN, BREAK HIMSELF IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE AND STILL ALMOST COME OUT ON TOP. I love Aizawa looking at Deku wondering what is on his mind in the match as he endures this. And at its base? It’s just because Deku is a good kid who wants what is best for everyone around him. Deku is kinda WILLPOWER INCARNATE. And it’s why he was chosen to be the holder of OFA in the 1st place. Which is both awesome…and VERY disturbing when he shows JUST how far he will go. You are FULLY justified in saying “DUDE STOP!” Instead of “Go Deku!” Like LESS THAN HALFWAY THROUGH THIS FIGHT. Well, there’s good reason for that. We get to discover a LOT of things about the human body you aren’t very likely to see. Can you break your finger more than once? Yes you can! Can you clench your fist with every finger broken? Yes you can! Can you PUNCH if all of your fingers are broken? Yes. Shockingly yes you can. SHOULD you? If you don’t hear every single doctor in the audience screaming NO at the top of their lungs, you likely should not see the doctors that didn’t. Because each of those questions went from “I’ve seen that”, to “WHY WOULD YOU EVER?!” in response. Because OH MY GOD the pain tolerance on Deku has officially reached the PATENTLY ABSURD juncture. He makes hits GOKU has taken over the years look tame. And purely because the effect on the body is REALISTIC. There’s an animation as Deku charges Todoroki where his fingers are moving around. Not like fingers. Liquid sacks would be the best description. It’s VERY free form. And that is DISTURBING along with the various shots of blood and let’s call it matter all over the ring because there is SO LITTLE REMAINING. HOW DOES HE STILL HAVE HANDS?! But the same goes for Todoroki! Seeing the frost on his body seems tame at 1st until you realize frostbite is INTERNAL and not just external and is likely enduring SIMILAR pain levels. And let’s not forget if Frostbite gets bad enough you can get your limbs AMPUTATED and that ESPECIALLY goes for what is on Todoroki by the end. Then there’s Todoroki’s fire which could have put himself into shock from the FAST switch in body temperature, and let’s not forget fire is consuming oxygen in the air and is likely why he’s breathing so hard after he wins. (And the VERY understandable panic attack) Even though Todoroki’s quirk is so balanced, leaning into extremes with no balancing can be CATASTROPHIC on his body. I mean the guy’s tears EVAPORATE. I won’t get into the temperatures TOO much because Todoroki has to be as hot as a freaking STAR to make SUB ABSOLUTE ZERO ICE vanish so fast. And I simply don’t have much info on the fire yet. And Todoroki’s ice control HAS to be greater than his fire as is simply by his sheer practice! (I say he’s like 60-70% ice and 30%-40% fire.) And we forget ALL that because Deku releasing one flick lasts 18 FULL SECONDS COMPLETELY VANISHING HIS ICE OVER A BASKETBALL FIELD OF DISTANCE THAT WAS COMPLETELY COVERED BY ICE. Which is…50 feet of SOLID MATTER just GONE on impact. Torn to shreds at a Mach 1.5 impact. (1/20th of All-Might’s fastest measured speed in season 1.) And aircraft skin tends to heat up to 85°F when moving that fast. Probably a BIT hotter for the human body itself. (Like well over 100 considering the body’s natural temp.) Deku is constantly enduring these impacts and BEYOND and fractions of it throughout (his cobbled control is most likely 15% of his best which is still…170 mph wind rushes) WITH NO BODY ACCLIMATION that Todoroki has with his quirk. He just…DEALS. And he is studying his opponent thoroughly and predicting his moves AND responding as he continues. The fact Deku has the kinetic vision to see Todoroki making every FRAGMENT of his emergency ice wall behind him when Todoroki gets close for the 1st time in what must be LESS THAN A SECOND and going for his ARM BLAST which is the same force level as his 100% but MUCH more surface area creating more wind by my guess has gotta be the CRAZIEST thing. He likely sees the WHOLE FIGHT like that. His face screams “PAIN” but as we heard from Cementoss, he likely entered adrenaline mode INSTANTLY. I stand in awe of OFA, and half cold half hot, but evolving quirks and mastering them has to be THE most physically strenuous thing in the world. You may notice that the audience is blind to Todoroki’s recoil and blind to Deku’s power just like with Uraraka and Bakugo. And just like Bakugo acknowledging Uraraka could have beaten him and likely had the tools to IN ANY OTHER circumstance, Todoroki has a similar acknowledgement. He is DOWNRIGHT TERRIFIED of Deku. Every time Todoroki thinks he ended it and Deku goes for something new, Todoroki DOES NOT look like he wants to be ANYWHERE NEAR the warpath. Heck I’d even say Todoroki’s flashbacks are more his life flashing before his eyes based on the timing. And of ALL of Todoroki’s incredible line reads I think the “You must be crazy” after talking about all this probably is the most applicable thing for what Deku is willing to do for the sake of others. I’ll leave the emotional breakdown alone because needless to say I love all the same parts as everyone else. I want to talk about Deku’s chances of victory and his final move in this battle. After the most PAINFUL therapy lesson ever, Todoroki uses his ice and fire combo and for the 1st time in the match, makes a similar power level to Deku’s OFA. And then there’s the question of who would have won if they impacted. Whose body would not have held out? Well we know how Todoroki blew up Cementoss barrier…so let’s use our imagination for Deku. Deku…used his leg and launched himself with 100% of OFA, and used his 15% palm for his move…FACE PLANTED THROUGH 3 LAYERS OF CONCRETE THAT LOOK OVER 5 FEET WIDE EACH AND EXPLODED BACKWARD WITH THE EXTRA WIND RUSH FROM HIS HAND. That is a Mach 1.5 impact. I DON’T think even Todoroki’s combo would have done Deku in if THAT is what he took to his OWN body. Todoroki? I think his face at the end speaks for himself. The best reason Todoroki contends is ironically Endeavor’s training giving him the reflexes to perform under high pressure. Endeavor is an AWFUL Dad, but let’s say that’s the silver lining. Todoroki survived THIS. Could Deku have won? I ASSUME if he used his whole arm on the 1st move it would’ve been over. Or a double flick one after another. Can I assume Todoroki can survive a Mach 1.5 impact without 50 feet of ice between him and Deku? Let’s say I DOUBT IT. I used to be upset Deku didn’t win, but let’s just say I’m VERY happy now. Deku simply does not have the OFA control to go for long winded fights, and while he had the WILL to continue, I don’t think anyone else could SURVIVE a match with Deku. And Deku would have to endure MORE pain and everyone after 5 minutes is ALREADY screaming WHY?! So let’s just say Deku got disqualified in a way. But he DEFINITELY left a hero. Ok. Get the poor kid a stretcher. This was SO much.
@@HaydrogenBomb XD wait til Deku actually starts developing his OFA and starts working to All-Might’s level. That gets VERY mathy. Luckily MHA just provides the rules for the % guesses as of now, and it’s not too bad. The 15% wind rush is not a simple random guess. But it gets CRAZY figuring out how Deku goes from his 100% to All-Might’s 2,000% we learned of when All-Might told him his 100% is an All-Might 5% before the Shinso battle.
@@Kaempfdog . . . I feel like you spoiled something towards the end. (For reference, I'm up to the end of season five and I haven't read much of the manga.)
@@HaydrogenBomb I don’t think I spoiled anything. (But I edited anyhow) Even with the unrevealed rule, we can still plug it into the logic of what is here. Not to mention All-Might straight up told us what the power of OFA would get to AND surpass, so there is a road for Deku to get there. We know Deku’s egg in the microwave is less than his full throttle 100%. The only thing unknown is the exact number. I’m very careful about writing this. I didn’t say anything about it’s utilization and application other than a speed measurement. And it’s one of the most sidelined rules of OFA anyhow.
I've seen you comment before (not that I read your comments lmao)! I know this is unrelated to the Sports Festival arc, but what makes the Final Exams arc your 2nd favourite in the series? Just curious that's all.
GREATLY disagree with you Montanna. Dekus injuries are a consequence of his ammunition. Todoroki LITERALLY has not landed a hit on Deku so this is still within Dekus calculation of winning. AND, if Deku did not suffer any recoil damage, can you say the same thing about cherry picking? No. It is not.
If deku didn't suffer any recoil damage it's a completely different situation so that's irrelevant. You can say the same thing about Shoto having it within his plan to keep making use Deku all he has until he's out and then it's a win.
This was the one for me I was awaiting with baited breath. You guys reacting to this is such a decadent treat for me. 👌 I found it so interesting how Montana reacted to Todoroki's breakthrough moment. It speaks for people in where they are when they react to things like this and it's such an eye opener. I was surprised Montana wasn't quite open to Todoroki letting it go and giving Endeavor the satisfaction. The point being that Endeavor didn't even matter in his decision to use his left side. Spite is one thing, but to make such a move unclouded by negative vice was such a healing thing for him. Good on Kenny and Todoroki for seeing it.
I'm glad you made that point about how people could die if Todoroki doesn't use his full power as a hero. I understand where Todoroki is coming from and why he made that vow, but one of the recurring themes/questions in this series is "What does it mean to be a hero?" For me, effort is a big part of that. For example, Katsuki: there are many traits about him I dislike, but I do respect how hard he works and how seriously he takes being a hero. If you truly want to be a hero, you have to try as hard as you can; doing anything less is disrespectful and dangerous, to you, the people you work with, and the people you're trying to save.
The "are you sure about that" meme in the beginning gave me a heart attack because my volume was really loud, especially since I was wearing headphones and I was alone in my room.
It's yours! Your quirk not his! I love it. I always found it hilarious. Don't get me started on the soundtrack . I love everything it comes up. In this moment, during the exam, and in that nomu fight. I tried to make these mentions as vague as possible. Can't forget about "You Say Run". The motivation it gives me. Even though Midoriya wanted to win, he wanted to save Todoroki even more, it's a big part of his character. Midoriya can't help but help people. For the Todoroki family, we get to see more drama in the later seasons, and it gets crazy. Even though Bakugou is my favorite, and I enjoy following Midoriya as a protag, the Todoroki is my favorite family to explore.
I think every part of what lead to those words "its your quirk not his" is incredibly important as well. Without todoroki telling midoriya is backstory, midoriya would have never done his self sacrifice during the match. The flashbacks todoroki had reinforcing what midoriya would say later from the people he looked up too. The words were juat the tipping point for todoroki that without all those parts would not have had such an impact otherwise. KIND OF A SPOILER NOT REALLY? . . . . . I think that's why it wasnt as impactful the other time he said it in season 6 because it had the sentiment but not the buildup.
Todoroki's family is so tragic. Endeavor became so obsessed with beating All Might that he sacrificed things no one should give up. This fight also demonstrates why Todoroki's two powers amplify each other. Each side keeps the other from becoming a limiting factor.
Not to spoil anything (definitely not cause where would the fun be in that) but I’m IMMENSELY excited to see the future Todoroki family discussions Montana will have. There’s so much to analyze and I feel like I’m really gonna like the points she’ll bring up! Great reaction as always! This is definitely what really hooked me into MHA and there’s so much more left to go!
I wanna push back on the idea that Todoroki’s mother was completely innocent. Of course shes clearly a victim in the overall situation but that doesn’t justify violently lashing out on others. She still threw boiling water on a child’s face. Does being in an abusive relationship justify abusing your kids?
She hurt her child. She was mentally unstable and an unfit parent and that's enough to take her child away from her but abuse isn't the right term to describe what she did. Abuse is when you repeatedly and consciously harm your child and that's what Endeavor did. Rei was severely traumatized to the point of having a psychotic break and hallucinating. She hurt Todoroki by accident, unlike Endeavor.
Easily one of my favorite fights! If anyone who is caught up through season 5 sees this, check out the Todoroki AMV called “Forward.” He has come so far. Todoroki and Deku are both so amazing! I still go back and watch this fight every once in a while.
One of the episodes where i truly believe the dub is way way better than the sub. There are quite a few episodes in the first 3 seasons that i can recall where the dub is so much better.
Absolutely for this anime. The dub hits you so hard and it feels almost more impactful with how much each english voice actor gave for this show. 10/10 for everyone involved
18:03 Todoroki's quirk is "hot and cold". Although it is a combination of his parents' quirks, it is not 2 seperate quirks, hence his fire is not Endeavor's fire.
I do like how they handle Todoroki situation because its many more layers than it is simplistic. I get the not forgiving others that hurt you but living a life to hurt that other person back doesn't really make things better. Todoroki just spiting his father is not that different. Instead you are continuing to allow them to influence you and be part of your life in a negative way. To burrow Dumbledore's words its not your abilities that define you but your actions. Endeavour trying to live through his son is awful but no different than sports parent doing same to their children. There are athletes that hated and resented parents but still love the game and sport they played. To give up what they love just to spit them would only be making both people unhappy.
"so come at me with all you've got!" that has to be one of my favorite deku lines, something about it is just so awesome. The manga panel for that shot is pretty cool too.
00:00 KIMI NO...CHIKARA J(y)ANAI KA? 9:38 while it’s true that technically deli isn’t at max power, he’s doing everything in his current power to win. for someone that’s passionate as him it is probably insulting to be giving it your all to reach your dream only to have your opponent fight against you with half their power with the only goal in mind being to piss someone off. It’s almost like finding out someone is dating you to make someone else jealous
🥺 Rei needs to be recognised for what she is: barely any better than Enji. He could have been a victim of childhood abuse for all we know, most narcissists are victims of that. Rei is also a victim, but a victim who, thanks to the anime style of holding long on single frames, seems to have known full well it was her son there. Shoto shouldn’t apologise to her. I almost think after that that maybe she deserves Enji. 😢
it's even more sad when you learn about why his dad is abusive, not a defence of him, what he did was awful to the 100000000 degree, but it gets sad man
This was very much needed. In school surr you don't wanna use your fire. But Shoto becomes a hero, can he really half ass a fight when people's lives are at stake ?
I mean this as non-obnoxiously as possible - but if you love "origin stories, backstories, character development, parent stuff" and analyzing people's motives and aspirations, may I politely suggest that you guys (especially Montana) react to Fruits Basket at some point? 🙂 I think Fruits Basket would be really well suited to your guys' (especially Montana's, lol) style of character analysis. And instead of watching anime characters punch each other in the gut, you (the viewer) will be punched in the gut by your emotions! The hype is entirely character driven!!! I really appreciate you guys aren't the type of reactors who just scream at so-called "hype moments", but in Fruits Basket the hype moments are literally two characters having a conversation and you will still lose your mind.
as an anime suggestion since you're all watching really intense anime, I suggest "Haikyuu" to lighten things up while also somehow still being intense but not AS intense
I love this episode. Deku would have won if he hadn't been trying to help Todoroki the whole time. He spent the whole match convincing Todoroki to accept his powers and use them to their fullest extent. XD And that's what makes him the best, he could have won, got that fame and fought the next person, but no, he decided to put aside any idea of winning so he could help someone. All personal selfish motives disappeared. Which is why All Might Chose him. He saw that in him. The moving before thinking thing. He didn't think about himself, he only thought of how to help Todoroki.
You're doing alot of shows right now but at some point in time it would be very interesting to see you watch Bungo stray dogs as it has the same ideas of people fighting bad guys with powers with more powers but the people with these powers are the minority. Not only that but the main characters are mostly adults whos job it is to catch the bad guys rather than training to be. The themes are overall more "dark" in a way but considerably closer to reality. I've noticed Montana is really good at character analysis which the show would be so perfect for! I love comparing the two and the big differences between them. Thats enough of me advertising for my favorite show though. These reactions are really good, it feels like im watching it for the first time again !! ❤❤
One thing that I find very sad about Todoroki is that, even though he desperately tried to get away from his father's influence, from being his puppet, his masterpiece, he still ended up being influenced. Not seeing his quirk as something of his, but something belonging to his parents (he didn't just see the fire side as Endevor's, but the ice he also saw as something of his mother), as well as his attitude of isolating himself from the other students, as Endeavor kept him away from his siblings from a young age
One thing too, it's quite surprising that he wanted to be a hero despite his experiences, but at the same time I think it was good that he already wanted to be one, because he wouldn't really have a choice to be anything else, you know? I think that, for him, the best choice was that he wanted to be a hero himself, because imagine if Shouto was 100% forced into that role, how dangerous that would be, how resentful he would be
God Montana, I feel you on the Endeavor disgust. For years I couldn't watch his scenes in this arc without averting my eyes from the screen cause u, I just don't want to look at that bastard
It's still never made sense to me how Shoto's side of the concrete was exploded. Like, Deku I get, that's obvious, but the animation makes it look as if there was equal force from both sides, and Shoto can't actually cause explosions, his left side quirk is literal fire with no actual physical force behind it. It doesn't generate impact of any kind, so how did the concrete explode?

Hi, I LOVE MHA, but can you please consider watching. Hunter x Hunter (Dub)? To me, it’s the closest in vibe to MHA. Have you seen it Kenny?
Deku: "i could exploit Shoto's refusal to use fire to beat him... but what if i give him therapy instead?"
Good guy Deku. 🫶👍
My hero sense is tingling
Deku prob
Honestly it’s brilliant, considering doing that made him a friend, and todoroki later saves his life with stain based on that connection
@@Tortilla.Reform It really pays off. Todoroki as an ally was way more valuable in the long term than just winning a dumb tournament battle.

@@WhereMerx ah ok, I haven’t seen the show in depth so this is helpful to learn thanks 🙏
My little brother LOVES this fight and episode, and tears up EVERY time Deku says, "It's your's! Your Quirk, not his!"
And he does so with a smile. As a wise person once said, "True heroes don't just save lives, they save hearts too."
Tbf Mirio would do the same thing but yea.
@@MysteriousMoseequivalent of when Goku/Vegeta let their enemies power up or give them senzu beans to get a better fight
Even though Deku lost this fight, he still ended up saving someone. Like a real hero would. Shoto was able to take that first step because of him.
It's a matter of perspective. No one will ever say Deku didn't win _his_ fight there.
bakugo always calls deku damn nerd and yet analyzes a battle like it's some kind of a video game 😂
They're more alike than he'll ever admit 😅
they both nerd
Oh Bakugo is definitely projecting. He's just as much about analysing the people around him, especially if they might end up being an opponent. He just more of the, ironically, cold calculator, as opposed to Deku's fervent note taking.
Even gets better grades than Midoryia.
I always cry hearing little Todoroki say that he didn't want to be like Endeavor who bullies his mom. It hits me on a personal level
This episode, is simply PEAK
Agreed
Absolutely
Well it's gonna go downhill from now anyway
Definitely in the top episodes, but personally, there is a certain fight in the next season that plays with the tension and emotions to an incredible degree for me
@@simplyrohith2163have you seen the latest seasons its good
I think Shoto placing the blame for his injury on Endeavor (correctly) at least partly comes from hearing his mom saying it’s the association with Endeavor that’s causing her problems
Montanas psychoanalysis of the characters are so fun to listen to. I always end up seeing the characters in a different perspective because of her and it's so fun
Frr I love the way she analyzes things
Part ofbthe reason that these two are my favorite UA-camrs
I really feel the show picks up this season since it starts to really dive into the ideas behind being a "hero":
-Why does somebody choose to be a hero?
Deku's "You're trembling, Todoroki," always gives me chills. And the voice crack when he uses his thumb for the smash? GOD I love that moment.
*Abusive father and favoritism of certain sibling

I never realize how much Zuko and Todoroki are damn similar😮😮
I used to think Horikoshi definitely took inspiration from ATLA, but there’s SO many similarities, it’s kinda proof he didn’t based on how much research goes into what makes up every character. He’s lucky there’s ENOUGH differences to not be plagiarism. I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed if he watched it, but if he did, I can see him wiping his forehead and saying THAT WAS CLOSE.
Yeah last video I read a comment referring to him as "Ice Zuko" and now I cant stop thinking about it 😂
Based on your comment, a little recap of this episode:
Here's a Shoto.
20:43 the most Epic high five in anime history
Fun little detail, Todoroki lands a slight touch on Deku and freezes up his arm before getting punched away. Even though it's clearly demonstrated that he could have frozen him entirely from that state, he chose to only freeze Deku's arm and leave this hand free. His already broken arm.
Todoroki made a cast for Deku's broken arm so he didn't mess it up more during the fight. His own little way of being nice.
i kinda love how the battles of my hero never go to waste
literally every battle of it makes a ntable change , let it be just for the characters included or for the overall story
i especially love how from this point on todoroki has a flshback of this fight in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS MOMENTS

Absolutely this 💯 💯
Yes. Endeavor's reaction after Shoto told him he all forgot about him in that moment is what said it all.
Don’t blame me for what happens next.”
I was nervous to see the dub version, cuz the original holds such a special place in my heart.
And I cry everytime Todoroki uses his fire for the first time
I cannot wait for Montana to watch the growth Todoroki undergoes throughout this show. it's so amazing satisfying
Just shows their dynamic and attention to detail so well
Nah he just saw an opportunity to attack and took it. The fact that it eased a little pain is coincidental.
So excited for this episode!!
Deku goes crazy and showing his pain tolerance is almost non existent. PEAK!
This is one of my most favorite episodes in all of My Hero, and it never fails to make me cry! This is why Deku is my favorite character in the show
Todoroki is so cool
Pun intended?
Endeavour shouting out "Shoto!!" Counter: 1
he’s choosing to use his fire power/full power to be true to his moms side over not using the fire to rebel against his dad.
(I say he’s like 60-70% ice and 30%-40% fire.)
And we forget ALL that because Deku releasing one flick lasts 18 FULL SECONDS COMPLETELY VANISHING HIS ICE OVER A BASKETBALL FIELD OF DISTANCE THAT WAS COMPLETELY COVERED BY ICE.
Well . . . . you sure did your math.

She's an actual ai who has to have human emotions explained to her.
One of the best episodes of my hero hands down
Lool! Montana's eye roll at Endeavor hahaha!! That was everything!
2 highschool students just overpowered 2 of the world's best to get at each other. Neither teacher, BOTH teachers had 0 effect on their quirks.
I understand where Todoroki is coming from and why he made that vow, but one of the recurring themes/questions in this series is "What does it mean to be a hero?"
For me, effort is a big part of that.

I think that's why it wasnt as impactful the other time he said it in season 6 because it had the sentiment but not the buildup.
Todoroki's family is so tragic. Endeavor became so obsessed with beating All Might that he sacrificed things no one should give up.
This fight also demonstrates why Todoroki's two powers amplify each other. Each side keeps the other from becoming a limiting factor.
Probably the best episode in the arc. W episode.
Spoilers
Man it’s weird seeing Endeavor like this after all of his character development
Agreed.
Seeing how he wants to improve as a human and try to become a better father is so much better as a character.
I’m excited to see how Montanas perspective changes when endeavor starts to grow. You can see the clear disgust she has when endeavor yells at shoto.
9:08 nope, sometimes you win and sometimes your opponent loses, they are adjacent but they are not the same
Had to pause the video and say this, but the way u guys edit your vids is the best i have ever seen from a reaction channel seriously.
Thanks so much! We wanna make each episode feel special and unique, means a lot you enjoy the editing style!
I think you should give Montana the ability to pause the video when she wants to talk.
I'm one of the very few people that isn't a particularly big fan of the sports festival, but this fight is just way too god damn amazing.
I’m so thrilled to see how she’ll react to season 4 endeavor
Bakugou, my beloved...
Im just gonna say it: this is one of the best episodes of any anime ever made
Easily one of my favorite fights!
10/10 for everyone involved
newer subscriber, 49 yrs young, just wanna say luv you guys, luv ur dissection of the episode, pov, really enjoy yas
This episode has always been my favorite of the entire series
I've been waiting for this episode ever since y'all started reacting, I'M SO HYPEEEEEEDDHEKRRKMRNRR
The sheer willpower it takes to launch an attack knowing each time that you do you'll break a finger...Deku is a BEAST.
00:00 KIMI NO...CHIKARA J(y)ANAI KA? (It's your power, isn't it?// ...Your...power, isn't it? more literally)
1:33 (no) - "It's okay...for you to be one."
6:14 I feel like you'd have to run after him there
7:46 _Where are you looking?_ -- (actually that's important to keep constant because 2x11)
8:00 wait what was the strategic about saving himself there
11:32 oo monster in englishk
12:14 It won't, it won't, it won't, it wON'T! (aaa the jp)

15:04 I'm just gonna be down here int the comments
("He's only 5" "He's _already_ 5" aa)
16:46 well not run away, but feels like she [can't/shouldn't]; 16:53 Just mama
18:33 hot*
21:00 SAME
27:15 **
( _J(y)ama da x2)
Stumbled on this channel, but the way you manuever around the reaction content limitations is top tier
it's even more sad when you learn about why his dad is abusive, not a defence of him, what he did was awful to the 100000000 degree, but it gets sad man
27:12 She's gonna like the start of the next episode LOL
We need a “you say run” counter.
on it
@@LettsReact Letts Go!!
I'm curious how differently this match had gone if Midoriya had discovered Full Cowling at this point. 🤔
I think Fruits Basket would be really well suited to your guys' (especially Montana's, lol) style of character analysis.
One of the greatest, and maybe the most emotional episode in anime.
Funny how both My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer have S+ tier episodes that are FIRE, both literally and figuratively. 🔥🔥
as an anime suggestion since you're all watching really intense anime, I suggest "Haikyuu" to lighten things up while also somehow still being intense but not AS intense
The second half of this season is my favorite! I cant wait for you to see more of it❤😁
16:19 that one character I never noticed before the first time I watched this.
My favorite line was "I don't know why you are smiling" My thought was that's that Goku energy😂
One of the marquee episodes of MHA
I love any time Bakugo gets to remind everyone that he is very smart.
Something that i thought about is that Shoto should not have won cuz the ref interfeired, but plot i guess
I can't wait for the later seasons to see how Montana reacts/thinks about someone.
Watching the dub this episode made me realize that the sub of this is soooo different. Sub is more emotional for me but dub is great too!
Everyone seems to ignorera the fact deku fkn jumped twoards that final attack 😅
I still get chills from this episode
I think that, for him, the best choice was that he wanted to be a hero himself, because imagine if Shouto was 100% forced into that role, how dangerous that would be, how resentful he would be
4TH WALL BREAK, SO EXCITED FOR SEASON 6
I can't wait to see Montana's reaction to the last episode of S4
God Montana, I feel you on the Endeavor disgust. For years I couldn't watch his scenes in this arc without averting my eyes from the screen cause u, I just don't want to look at that bastard
It's still never made sense to me how Shoto's side of the concrete was exploded. Like, Deku I get, that's obvious, but the animation makes it look as if there was equal force from both sides, and Shoto can't actually cause explosions, his left side quirk is literal fire with no actual physical force behind it. It doesn't generate impact of any kind, so how did the concrete explode?
it's called " anime's dramatic effect that makes the scene look cooler," i guess 😂
Probably my favourite villain of all time next episode
I have so many praises to sing about this absolutely fucking legendary episode but I'm way too hyped so instead perhaps I'll just scream
