  • Marcia and I spent our 35th anniversary at this event in Farmington hills, MI. We had a great time. Stayed at the Holiday Inn, spent some quality time together, enjoyed great food, loved out time away from the normal routine. I was very happy to be greeted by people that have enjoyed this UA-cam Channel. I strive to present quality videos. Marcia and I plan to do more on location videos this year. We hope you enjoy this tour down vintage alley. For more info on this event, see: TheVee.org. Thank you to all that attended.

A wonderful tour of paradise for collectors ... ) Thank you. I am from Ukraine, I have a large private collection of old radio equipment from all over the world, including more than 10 radios from the USA. Unfortunately, we are not into entertainment right now, but I really want to visit Kutztown or Farmington Hills after the war and add to my collection tube radios from the 20s and 30s.

yes the opening music is being actually played thru an aux input on the Zenith console you see. We were using a portable battery CD player thru an aux input cord patched into the volume control. No switches, no holes drilled, EASY !!! I just add 100 ohms or so half watt resistors in series with each hot audio lead, then "Y" them down to the high side of the vol control. Shield goes to the low side. I use 3.5mm stereo male to male cords, cut the 6' ones in half and use the 3' cord, run it thru any existing hole and tie a strain relief knot in it on both sides of chassis.

32:04 - I had that Bell Labs kit in 1968, a Vowel Generator and another kit, Make Solar Cells at Home! Dad and I "cooked" them in the little ceramic "furnace" that was included in the kit. In our barn! We had to cut asbestos bricks, with a hack saw!, to encase the heating element of the furnace. Also a dozen deadly chemicals and one inch silicon wafer! Kids today just don't have the opportunities we had. BTW, the solar cells "worked"!

Thanks for the interview at 1:04:15 of your video. There aren't many places to advertise a specialty craft. Consequently, many radio people don't know that there are reproduction knobs and rubber parts available from RenovatedRadios.com. No reason for radios to have a knob or two missing anymore. Thanks for your excellent video work.

32:00 Yup... those things are cool....I had one of those Speech Synthesis projects when I was little. It was a kit and the box the kit came in became the chassis. When certain combinations of capacitors and resisters were connected across the various Fahnestock-clip pairs, it would generate phoneme sounds when the key was pressed and let go. It would say "oooo" or "aaahhhh" or "eehhhh" or "eerrrr" or "uuhhhh" etc etc etc, depending on the R/C combinations. :-)

38:30, those optivisor magnifying headbands are very high quality and the lenses, which are swappable and replaceable, are glass, not plastic. Unfortunately, the sets usually don't come with anything higher than a number 3 diopter lens, pretty much useless for my old eyes. At work I mostly use #5 and #7 diopter, and occasionally number 10 lenses, which I had to buy online.

The two larger clubs in CA are the "Southern California Antique Radio Society" (SCARS) around LA area and the "California Historic Radio Society" (CHRS) around the Oakland area. Both have "trunk sale" events. Some events in the Denver, Portland and Seattle areas too. But, you really gotta come east for this assortment. Chicago area has a show early August- www.antique-radios.org/schedule.html , Charlotte, NC has one coming Mar.22-23 www.cc-awa.club , Kutztown, PA has two, one in May one in Sept www.renningers.com , New England Antique Radio Club has one coming Mar. 3 www.antique-radios.org/schedule.html , Mid Atlantic Antique Radio Club has one June 27-30 www.maarc.org/ Those are the all the biggies. The Kutztown ones are the biggest and have the really nicest stuff. I sell parts at the Sept. one every year. All these shows are outdoor flea markets, some have indoor seminars and such, except the Michigan ones are both indoors. Kutztown is under two 300' X 60' pavilions.

The only large vintage radio/electronics event in the south is in Charlotte, NC, coming March 22-23 at the Sheraton Charlotte Airport hotel. Its been there 25 years now, and like many of these shows, is not well advertised. I am a parts vendor at that show each year too. Website is here : cc-awa.club/antique-radio-charlotte Its been an all-outdoor flea market for all these years with indoor auctions and seminars. The hotel there offers a real discount deal- usually around $85 for a night, with indoor pool.
There is another smaller show in Atlanta, put on by the Southeastern Antique Radio Society www.sarsradio.com/swap%20meets-d.htm. Note, these are known as "Antique Radio Swap Meets" and do not have as much stuff or attendance as the show in this video but you will see similar stuff. If you have a particular interest area, its worth making a flyer about it with all your contact info and drop one on each seller's table. You will be amazed what you might turn up since most sellers only bring a tiny fraction of what they have to the shows (too much to haul for older folks!). Since re-branding to "The Vintage Electronics Expos" in 2015 , this show has more than doubled attendance. The Michigan Antique Radio Club is the promoter of the two VEE events. Info, contact Mark Oppat at moppat at comcast dot net or see the site at www.thevee.org Also, more pix on the Antique Radio Forum online, which is a GREAT place to hang and get info on nearly any vintage electronics gear if you are a newbie or an "old pro".

Sparton (Sparks-Withington Co. is why its spelled like that) of Jackson, Michigan had some really odd tubes of their own in the "early AC radio" days (1927-1930). They were trying to avoid RCA's patents. Didnt work out, lost in court, they ended up like everyone else paying the license fees for a while until some patents ran out or I forget what happened. Anyways, they had their own "Cardon" brand tubes that ran 3.3v filaments... everyone else ran 1.5V, 2.5V, and 5 v at that time. 6V tubes came along 1933 to match auto voltage. The Sparton types 484 and 485 are fairly easy to find, but their output tubes are rare and pricey. You can use other types there but the others are pricey too. If you have a 1927 era Sparton, you would have the 3.3v filament "C373" aka "C401" tubes which had the filament leads on clips that fit pins on the SIDE of the tube base ! Now this is a sorry situation.... I know a guy making some conversions to 2.5v type 27 tubes for those right now., gonna run them triode. He has an "AC63 model, challenging radio !

Hi John, That was a CD playing with a MP3 input to the Zenith

Hi John, that music was at our booth and the music was coming out of a 1939 Zenith Model 7S363 that I restored and added an aux input. ALL ORIGINAL circuit and 10" electro-dynamic speaker, just fresh caps as usual and good tubes. This can be done to most any vintage radio. The artist is Flint, Michigan native Mark Lincoln Braun, known as "Mr.B", who has toured the USA with his "Joybox Express" which is an upright piano on a trailer pulled by a pedal bike ! The disc is called "B at Home" and was recorded in his home. Mr. B's site is marklincolnbraun.com He plays at most major Ann Arbor and other Michigan art fairs and is known far and wide as one of the greatest "boogie piano" style players. If you are interested in buying this nice console radio or getting parts for such things or service, visit my site www.oldradioparts.net I specialize in knobs, capacitors and volume/tone/balance etc controls for stuff mostly 1930-1970 era. Cant do most stereo receiver controls, sorry (but CAN do vintage Fisher, Heathkit, Dynaco and of course radio controls for the classic brands like Zenith, RCA, Philco, etc). See the info for the next show July 19-20 in Kalamazoo at www.thevee.org and thanks to Terry of D-labs for covering this event !

It is pretty bad when you're watching a video thinking what a load of crap then you spot something that you have in it all. I have one of them Sears meters at 23:41 Really I have two of them. One is slightly different than the other though.
