  • Welcome to the 2019 AM Get together, hosted by Gary, KI8BQ. This is his 17th event. A great time to share the hobby with amateur friends. We all come together for the same reason. Enjoy the hobby, spread the wealth. This is an annual event. We would love to see new faces. Our mission is to promote this hobby.

    Last hamfest I went to was the BIG ONE at Dayton. That was 2012. Fun to go, and bought some great gear. Never owned an HQ-129x, but, have a super HQ-140x that l still love. Thanks for the walk-thru!

    LOVE the Olds Aurora! One of the most beautifully designed cars GM ever made along with the Buick Riviera of the same era.

    While I myself have some legacy with the hams I couldn't help but notice the lack of younger people in attendance. It is my hope that 20 years from now this new generation of electronics hobbyist and experimenters will strive to keep this great tradition alive! I also believe that the hams will still be the first responders in the event of any emergency or disaster. Further, it is refreshing to see the great amount of kindness and respect within this community.

      Most of the younger hams I know are more playing with V/UHF and as well as digital modulation and VOIP linking. Give 'em time...

    I think the only way to keep these old rigs in service and bring in the new blood is by first making them competitively priced, for some of the price tags on those items would make new hammies with money to burn go online and get a QRP rig or some medium range stuff knowing it's new and it has all the latest functionality, then upgrade to the newest thing or just leave it on the shelf after the fad fades away.
    I know back in the day these old rigs would go for alot and there's sentimental value involved but the resale value on some of this stuff is astronomical (30+ year old gear), especially for someone wanting to get their toes wet and not fully commit or who have a very limited disposable income.
    These types of people who are willing to repair and learn are more likely to continue in the hobby and keep vintage/antique equipment serviceable and plus encouraging other after market companies to provide support and parts keeping the blood flowing, as some comments have mentioned, some gear will get passed down then sold at dirt cheap prices (from extreme prices)or thrown out in the end.

    I bot a whole garage full of stuff dating from WW2 to the 50's a few years back. Probably 4-5 of those black radios at 19:58. I gave all but one away and built a tube matcher on the last one.

      I don't know what the Hamfests and swap meets are like over there but the ones here in NZ have got to the point where it's hardly worth travelling the distance to attend. I'd really like to go to some of these US events!

    Appears to be one close community.
    I suppose they didn't buy much, because they already bought the things they wanted from each other years ago.
    Bringing in some new folks can help boost the sales.

    one thing that stands out is --most people are mid+ age!! I included seems like a slow dying hobby/obsession of great old gear me included it,s a real shame that another 30-50 years it will be all gone apart from museum displays & just digital signal ping ponging on air with no idea how it works as is whats happening now

    • @johnrobinson357
      @johnrobinson357 5 років тому

      I will say this to you. You have little idea just how spot on correct you are. When folks like me and the guys shown here are gone, radio
      is WE the geezers know it will die. Vacuum tubes WTF are those ? I said very much as you a few years ago in response to someones
      question about radio as a hobby. As i have said and will continue to say, it is the rise of the smartphone - an oxymoron ! that plays a large role in this. Listen, i get it. They can do really cool things and are a marvel of tech. But this is due to popularity alone - and money.You do not get the cool stuff without paying for it. Mark my words. This is a takeover of massive proportions. They are almost in all hands as of now. How better to control a population than by willing participation. Pardon my verbs. It is very bad shit !!
      When you put a powerful computer in ALL hands, that they take with them everywhere ALL the time. It creates an opportunity
      that will not be overlooked. And it is not at all for the greater good. If you buy that shit you are a fool. Rant over.

    Does it make you old by remembering getting two floor model radios together at night to hear real stereo one radio one half and the other broadcasting the other half simultaneously.

    • @dhpbear2
      @dhpbear2 5 років тому

      Were there such broadcasts back in the day? I remember Quad broadcasts back in the early 70s that required two stereo tuners!

    • @sr633
      @sr633 5 років тому

      @@dhpbear2 I remember this as a kid - 8 pm waiting for the two stations to come on together and make stereo magic for an hour,

    • @leannmeixner8073

      That was a short lived method of stereo, 1960-61 I think. By April 1961 stereo FM was settled in the USA.

    Looks like a good ol boy way of hanging out with like minded folks. They don't do much stuff like this anymore really......call me old fashioned but dang it man, I miss stuff like this and I'm a guitar player and tube amp junkie and. don't work on this stuff but I know quite a bit about this older kinda stuff and appreciate what it represents .....that may sound like a crazy statement but I think it's a true one at that!!...PLUS look at that feast!!! Throw in some NW Montana CHERRIES and pass out from the gizmo flavor...THE BEST period!!!!

    That one guy was so right. "There ain't no money changing hands". Because most of these guys will just pass this equipment on to their heirs. And the heirs will junk it or sell it for pennies on the dollar. Ain't no one trying to forward the HAM craft, they're trying to make a buck. But, who can blame them?? Right??
