I liked both versions. Played the OG first. never liked the pressure sensitivity face button concept as much as analog trigger in a 1st and 3rd person shooting game much. for me it just add too much frustrations. i think in mgs2 - where you suppose to use a enemy as a human shield and force him into the eye scanner to unlock the door to progress, i end up choking them to death instead. why can't we hold him while hold the circle button (i think) from behind while crouch, force him to scan his eyes to unlock and let go the button for solid snake to knock him out (kill him while he already knocked out - if you want too with a suppressed weapon or knife).
i thought the gamecube has analog triggers? anyway yeah, man, sucks not knowing wether or not your games will be valuable. the one regret i have is trading in my copy of paper mario for a 360 game. i lucked out on my copy of twin snakes cuz i bought it for 20$ at a local video store before they stored their gamecube collection. so whatever gamecube games you get, even if its not expensive at the time, just buy it. you never know.

The way the dialogue turned out on the PS1 Metal Gear Solid was mostly the work of the localization team. I think they took some creative liberties which didn't fit with Kojima's vision for the game, so the changes were made for Twin Snakes. Mei Ling is voiced by the same person in both games, but rerecorded in a regular American accent in the latter.

Mei Ling is voiced by the same actress, Kim Mai Guest, but they dropped her previously used Chinese accent because her backstory didn't really support her still having an accent. Also, ALL of the dialog had to be rerecorded, so every actor needed to do their lines over again, plus some additional dialog. Fans had a big issue with Naomi Hunters performance in the Twin Snakes. It was done by Jennifer Hale, and she has always done a fabulous job, so many fans speculated that whoever did the voice directing wasn't the same person, so they didn't get a performance that matched the original. Some say it was early on her career, so she may not have even remembered much about her original performance. There are even other lines that fans said were better in the original, which has led to many saying the overall performances were better in the original. That where much controversy comes from, along with the new over-the-top cutscenes.
I'd had someone point out to me a theory of the differences between the two versions. All the bombastic additions are Otacon embellishing the facts for the sake of sounding more interesting.
@Protomat nah headcanon is stupid. Nice try. The real answer was the director who Kojima told to do it in his own style was just trying to make Otacon look like a bumbling fool when he isn't.
Having played both I much prefer Twin Snakes. The biggest letdown was no VR missions but the increase in quality of the rest of the package negates that.
There were originally plans to include VR. But due to the limits of storage space on the GameCube disc format, made it a tricky situation. It would have been a 3 to 4 disc set instead of 2.
Me personally, the OG is superior in almost every way. The voice acting is fantastic even for a PS1 game whereas everyone sounds bored and like they didn't want to be there on remake. The soundtrack is more iconic and fits the tone better for each level/environment. The cutscenes IMO look way better than the over-the-top matrix crap they did in the remake. The only big advantage the remake has are graphics, which they simply just reused the MGS2 engine. Due to being able to hang and shoot in first person, the gameplay is incredibly unbalanced and makes it way too easy. It's a fun remake, but OG is far superior and memorable.

Let’s agree to the fact that all of this really mostly originates from the ‘console wars thing’ as there really isn’t much difference at all apart from the graphics, the cutscenes, the MGS2 gameplay and some re-recording. It’s just Kojima’s redux version of an already awesome game . I don’t get why people mention the shift in tone, as MGS at least to me has always been an over-the-top sci-fi manga extravaganza. But they wanted to do Nintendo things lol so most people I know go back to the PS1 version due to it being more serious in nature. Just my 2 cents, I love all things Metal Gear (up to MGS 4) lol
So no mention of the music? Mgs1 music is legendary and has feeling. The only thing that twin snake did that sounded decent was psycho mantis theme. People have shown cutscenes from Twin snakes that would have been better with the mgs1 soundtrack. Hell they could have made cover versions of the mgs1 songs.
Thank you! Is everyone Tone deaf in here? Harry Gregson Willams should have never touched the MGS1 score. They should have got the same Japanese person from the first one. The music literally made the atmosphere of Shadow Moses come alive and feel cold and gritty and metallic. Twin snakes would have been fine if they didn’t change the music, the iconic GAME OVER screen, and that amazing original opening Title sequence that panned to Solid Snakes face and the main menu below while (and once again) the iconic opening title sequence MUSIC plays! I can’t tell if RGT is baiting without mentioning the music.. or if he’s actually that dense? And nobody in comments mentioned it until I got finally got down below to your comment. I just made a comment of my own about the music too. Music Supervisor on that project sucked. I wonder if the music supervisor was Kojima? He probably didn’t want to burn bridges with Harry Gregson Williams by not hiring him. Harry should have know better not to deviate so far from it.
So to answer your question about Mei Ling. Yes that is the original actress. Fun fact: Snake’s Voice Actor David Hayter gave up half of his salary so Konami could afford to bring the original actors from the first game back for the remake. While that did happen. One character got Recast. Gray Fox who was voiced by Greg Eagles is now voiced by Rob Paulson. Who is known to voice 80s Raphael and 2012 Donatello from the Ninja Turtles Franchise. And THE MOST POWERFUL FICTONAL CHARACTER EVER….. Carl Greg Eagles does still do a voice in the game but as the much smaller role as the DARPA Chief
The Revolver Ocelot fight is not an issue at all since, in both game, you can just sprint behind him and shoot at the same time and you kill him super easily regardless.
I played the OG when it came out and Twin Snakes when it came out. Both are excellent games, it's just a shame the later has never seen a re release for whatever reason.
I don’t know what people expected - the dude that directed the cutscenes was the same one that did the Japanese movie “Versus” (Ryuhei Kitamura). Obviously Kojima loves film and working with individuals in the space…and also, knowing that, the style would be different.
That’s because you’re solipsistic. I had both versions of the game and I enjoyed them both, and I still judge TTS to be an inferior, goofy mess. Just because you can’t wrap your head around rational adults capable of disagreeing with you doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
I loved Twin Snakes too because it was the way I first played MGS1. I couldn’t go back to the OG MGS1 because I could never get used to the OG’s controls.
I played both. twin snakes is my preferred version, however for nostalgia I was a young kid playing the original and having fun with the vr missions was awesome and now I have the master collection for switch. But gameplay experience I truthfully enjoyed twin snakes and I appreciated the facelift it received.
So the whole accent thing has been explained before. The actress for Mei Ling and Naomi dropped their accents because Kojima never wanted them. He wanted everyone to speak perfect clear English. But, the localization director decided to add these details. When they got back together to rerecord the lines in Twin Snakes that localization director was fired. He changed a lot of lines and disagreed with Kojima on a lot of things. Guy sounded like a prick they way he messed with things during production like arguing over villain names and such. But Kim Mai Guest (Mei Ling) and Jennifer Hale (Naomi) were the original voice actors. They didn't change her voice from a chinese to white woman. It's the same chick that had used a fake accent at one point and they decided to drop it because it was never a part of the vision.
The differences really aren’t a big deal to me. The ocelot fight can be easier but if you really want the challenge it’s not like you have to use first person. Everything else is such a minor thing. The graphical upgrade given to the entire game still outweighs that. It looks so much better than the original and I like the added mgs 2 mechanics. I think they’re just nice qol improvements over the original. Outside of the option of using them against ocelot there’s nothing about them that really changes or ruins the game play. You’ll still get the same story and experience of mgs1 from playing twin snakes.
Back in the day there was a lot of butthurt with Playstation fanboys that Twin Snakes was a GameCube exclusive. That seemed to me where the criticism started. They started saying skip it, the original is better. It wasn't. But it stuck. Much like the Resident Evil remake situation. Only recently have Playstation fanboys got over their butthurt about that one and crowned it the masterpiece that it is. And always was.
The idea that the cutscenes are the source of the controversy is the dumbest thing to me when I find the MGS2 based additions to be much more aggregious to work against the game. The thing that i find no one ever brings up that is the main grievence beyond the FPS breaking the game, is the floors. Seemingly random floors were made to be "creaky" so youd alert people because the grey block on the beige floor was deemed to be a walk surface. That all being said. TwinSnakes is definitely over hated and if it were included im a later volume of the master collection I would still be 100% for it. The people I think are objectively WRONG are the ones who think Twin Snakes invaildates MGS1.
I 100% believe that the vast majority of hate that this game receives stems from the fact that it is a GameCube exclusive Yes, there are differences… But those differences were exaggerated by peoples hate for the GameCube at the time
@@3OverhausActually it did, because none of you were bitching about MGS2 and no Nintendo fans were bitching about MGS2 or 3 being PS2 exclusives at the time. The same thing happened with the RE1R before it got it's HD rereleases. Shut up with your garbage excuses.
I lived in Korea, where we didn't get jack shit for American games. I ordered a used one complete with manual for 120 bucks from Amazon, it was the only one online at the time, and when it finally arrived at the post office, the package was ripped open and replaced with some lady's heart medication. I just wanted to share my Twin Snakes experience.
I prefer this game over the OG version. The story is still there, the shocking aspect still hits, and the gameplay is FAR superior to the OG. Severely underrated version imo
You must have grew up playing the Remake over the OG then. The voice acting is shit compared to the original, the matrix over the top cutscenes takes away from the experience, and the gameplay mechanics from MGS2 made the game way too easy and unbalanced
@@LeeEverett1 to each their own. And no, I beat the OG version about 20 times and still play it till this day. I actually got into it from the pizza hut demo disc (which I wish I never threw it out). But I recently played the twin snakes version on my Odin pro and was blown away. It's not perfect by any means but considering it was a GameCube release it's a better version for me. Btw I never had a GameCube hence why I play it through emulation
I thought another change with TS was the soundtrack in some parts. Maybe that’s wrong but I thought I remembered that. I do like how they added the main theme song from MGS2 into the remake (forget the name but is from the main MGS2 trailer). That was the one music change that I jumped up and down for. That theme song is just so good!
Just a friendly reminder, Kojima never said that Twin snakes was how he Initially wanted MGS1 to be but was unable to achieve due to technical limitations. I hope this lie stops one day because it's a pathetic defense by twins snakes fanboys to deflect valid criticism. Kojima never said this lie once. Not in a single interview, article, nothing. In fact, if you look up an interview he did for an Nintendo power in 2003, he actually says the opposite at one point. The other reminder is about how the rest of the series is not over the top like twin snakes, case in point, you never see snake do any of these ridiculous cartoonish flips over all his problems in any other game. Every super over the top moment everyone is going to cite is either done by a character with obvious cybernetic enhancements as the excuse or a character that's not meant to have how they do their incredible feats explained to create some type of creepy unnerving aura and mystique around them. In fact, this too can be proven objectively false with a bit of research when you find out Kojima is the one who told director Kitamura to make the games cutscenes more in line with Kitamura's movies instead of what Kojima would normally do. Proof positive that twin snakes's tone and style is purposely different than the rest of the series.
I am a diehard Metal Gear fan but I just dont like Twin Snakes. Just hearing the beginning briefing, the acting is way different and not in a good way. The original wins every time.
Keep in mind that the idea of remakes wasn't as big as it is nowadays. Back then we only expected cooler graphics and music. So my first impressions with TS were amazing because I didn't own a PS2 at the time.
You failed to point out the BIGGEST difference and iconic things that made the whole aesthetic of the OG version come together and that's the OST. Twin Snakes destroys itself by this single handed move
With the exception of the graphics I have honestly always thought this version was the interior one due to the tone change. However after noticing it missing from the upcoming Metal Gear Solid collection when I think this volume would have been the one you put Twins Snakes on. I’ve found myself fascinated with this game recently and wanting badly to get my hands on it again. Then out of the blue my favorite Nintendo UA-camr up and does a video on it.
One of the greatest game experiences I ever had got it used when I was just a kid my pops didn't really wanna buy it cus he thought it was a shooter like GTA but I convinced him it wasn't and he bought it mainly cus it was cheap and this would be my first Rated M game and it went from me being skeptical and bummed out about the gameplay then I realized how violent and the first person in it was I realized I was playing a whole movie I loved the experience especially with all the badass characters
The OG is great. Twin Snakes is awesome. I suspect much of the gripe of that time came from the fact that it was a ‘ hardcore’ exclusive title on a ‘kiddy’ console and beautiful to boot. MSG 3 Snake Eater certainly didn’t pull back to a more ‘realistic’ MGS (as if it ever was) Twin Snakes now is one of the Gamecube’s crown jewels.
For people who prefer the Twin Snakes cutscenes: check out a movie called “Azumi” by Ryuhei Kitamura he actually directed the cutscenes in Twin Snakes which is a fact I never hear people talk about.
Thanks for explaining that. Always wondered why this game always seemed to get the side eye when talking about GameCube exclusives. (Or maybe just indifference.)
MGS: The Twin Snakes is one of my most favorite GameCube games as well as one of my most favorite games overall in the Metal Gear series and I would really love to see an HD port or something of this game next hopefully for the Nintendo Switch, if possible, which would be so awesome.
I loved both. People always bring up FPV with the Ocelot fight, but they forget to mention you can shoot the pipes, which adds a new way to play. Regardless, I think bashing TTS while holding MGS1 up on a pedestal is wrong (not saying you are doing that). I do think you added good points, nice video!
The Twin Snakes for the GameCube is the best version. All this negative feedback were from Sony dick riders who were angry that MGS TS wasn't coming to the PS2.
I loved both version. Got a ps1 for Christmas and on the demo disk was a video for mgs1,i thought it looked amazing! Bought a playstation magazine a few months later, i think it was issue 42 in the uk, which had a playable demo..it blew my mind! A video game which was basically a playable movie. Before hand video games were playable cartoons in my mind, as a kid a least. Needless to say i got the full game when it released, and it was unparalleled at the time. A masterpiece. I have it on ps1, pc and gamecube ie. Twinsnakes and i will buy the new remaster collection version when it releases. Maybe its a case of you had to be there at the time to fully appreciate its ground breaking impact but nevertheless i recommended playing mgs1 whatever way you can.
I am glad I held onto my CIB copy, especially because it isn't being included in the upcoming collections Konami is releasing. While I do like the original version on the PS1, this was my first experience with MGS and it left a lasting impression.
Twin snakes is so much better and it’s a shame it’s not on the collection that came out. I’m not sure how it’s controversial. It doesn’t make the game easier lmao. And I think the Amazon package game you were talking about is highly underrated. I love that game. I think this is just a fluff video. When this game came out…trust me it was a hit back in 2004 or whatever. There’s NOTHING WRONG WITH TWIN SNAKES….I cannot believe people are spending their time complaining about little nit picks from twin snakes….this can’t be a popular opinion
Both MGS and Twin Snakes are great. If you have the chance to play both, please do. I had a blast with both but I prefer the visuals of TS so I kinda like that one a littler better. Don’t really care much for the cutscenes, cause the gameplay imo makes up for it
I originally sold my PS2 to get a GameCube to play the Resident Evils. I was glad when they ported this. As many know, the GameCubes library is pretty small. So getting a mature game like this was great. Exclusives were still a big deal back then.

Harry should have know better not to deviate so far from it.
mei ling is of chinese origin but she was raised in america, it makes complete sense why she would have a more american accent
Carl
Greg Eagles does still do a voice in the game but as the much smaller role as the DARPA Chief
haven't play the original much, but "metal gear solid: the twin snake" improved over the original and despite the changes, it plays well.
I really like the slow motion for the Gamecube Twinsnakes
The Revolver Ocelot fight is not an issue at all since, in both game, you can just sprint behind him and shoot at the same time and you kill him super easily regardless.
This is the best retro remake ,well done
I played the OG when it came out and Twin Snakes when it came out. Both are excellent games, it's just a shame the later has never seen a re release for whatever reason.
I don’t know what people expected - the dude that directed the cutscenes was the same one that did the Japanese movie “Versus” (Ryuhei Kitamura).
Obviously Kojima loves film and working with individuals in the space…and also, knowing that, the style would be different.
I 100% believe that the vast majority of hate that this game receives stems from the fact that it is a GameCube exclusive
Big facts
yup
Twin snakes is great, played the original, played the remake, both awesome
Absolutely no controversy. It was a great game with great graphics. I love and cherish it. First video game I ever bought brand new.
Why is this game not coming to the collection of metal gear
Said it before I'll say it again. For the effort of doing a full remake of MGS1 they could've and should've just done Gamecube ports of MGS2 and 3
So the whole accent thing has been explained before.
I hope that this game is on the second legacy collection. Volume 1 has Snake's Revenge, so there's a chance.
Probably because of the 2011 rereleases of RE1R 😅
I still have my copy 🎮
Twin Snakes is amazing. Started replaying recently on my GameCube and it still plays incredibly.
Really dig the retro talk keep 'em comming
I 100% believe that the vast majority of hate that this game receives stems from the fact that it is a GameCube exclusive
Yes, there are differences… But those differences were exaggerated by peoples hate for the GameCube at the time
Nothing to do with the console. Fans just hated the gameplay, voice performances and stupid cutscenes.
@@3Overhausespecally when you can’t play as Snake all the time
@@3OverhausActually it did, because none of you were bitching about MGS2 and no Nintendo fans were bitching about MGS2 or 3 being PS2 exclusives at the time.
The same thing happened with the RE1R before it got it's HD rereleases. Shut up with your garbage excuses.
I never played the OG but I played Twin Snakes and loved it!
Give us this in the metal gear solid collection I loved it!
Any updates on the Benz?
For me the weirdest thing was the music the original soundtrack had such an atmospheric you didnt get in twin snakes but i can enjoy both
Yo, how did I not know you have this channel?! Dope pivot.
I love the game.
Snake wasn't working for Foxhound just fyi
I lived in Korea, where we didn't get jack shit for American games. I ordered a used one complete with manual for 120 bucks from Amazon, it was the only one online at the time, and when it finally arrived at the post office, the package was ripped open and replaced with some lady's heart medication. I just wanted to share my Twin Snakes experience.
watching these clips here, i can see how there is so much influence from John Woo in the camera work lolz
I prefer this game over the OG version. The story is still there, the shocking aspect still hits, and the gameplay is FAR superior to the OG. Severely underrated version imo
They made it too ridiculous...especially with Snake doing backflips off mid-air missles.
@@Marc_Araujo it's a video game!!
You must have grew up playing the Remake over the OG then. The voice acting is shit compared to the original, the matrix over the top cutscenes takes away from the experience, and the gameplay mechanics from MGS2 made the game way too easy and unbalanced
@@LeeEverett1the remake hasn’t coming out yet
The changes the soundtrack for when Sniper Wolf dies and it just doesn’t hit the same as the original
@@JamesLehartProductions that’s it!! Thanks!
Just a friendly reminder,
Kojima never said that Twin snakes was how he Initially wanted MGS1 to be but was unable to achieve due to technical limitations.
Been wanting to play this
I am a diehard Metal Gear fan but I just dont like Twin Snakes.
Dude intro music is 🔥
You failed to point out the BIGGEST difference and iconic things that made the whole aesthetic of the OG version come together and that's the OST. Twin Snakes destroys itself by this single handed move
Loving this 2nd channel
Contrary to popular opinion, I loved the new cinematics in Twin Snakes
I HATED THEM.
I love the Twin Snakes version
With the exception of the graphics I have honestly always thought this version was the interior one due to the tone change. However after noticing it missing from the upcoming Metal Gear Solid collection when I think this volume would have been the one you put Twins Snakes on. I’ve found myself fascinated with this game recently and wanting badly to get my hands on it again. Then out of the blue my favorite Nintendo UA-camr up and does a video on it.
Great Game but The Original PS1 Version is Still Superior
Finally a RGT video that I don't have to skip
Didnt know this channel existed. Its like Scotts Stash lol. I like twin snakes i never understood the hate. I wish it was on the new collection
EVA's motorcycle stunt 😅
This was a great game, shame it's not on the MGS collection.
For people who prefer the Twin Snakes cutscenes: check out a movie called “Azumi” by Ryuhei Kitamura he actually directed the cutscenes in Twin Snakes which is a fact I never hear people talk about.
Versus is my favorite of his movies.
Way too over the top...they jumped the shark by making Snake do a backflip off an incoming missle fired from a Hind D.
Really glad you made this. The redone voices and the over the top cutscenes really made me feel sick lol. It just screws with the pacing.
Mei Ling is voiced by the same actress.
I was excited for it when it released and I wasn’t disappointed at all it still has a place in my collection.
Wish Twin Snakes was going to be included in the master collection.
You clearly didn’t finish Death Stranding and gave up after getting bored with ADD.
I relate a lot, I remember watching the end credits with the real world videos and thinking, this is more than a game
I am glad I held onto my CIB copy, especially because it isn't being included in the upcoming collections Konami is releasing. While I do like the original version on the PS1, this was my first experience with MGS and it left a lasting impression.
There is always the rom.
It only Vol 1 metal gear Collectons dude
The missing original soundtrack got me the most about The Twin Snake.
Substance and Sustenance are great MGS titles with the mod upgrades.
Fanboys hate it because snake jumps off of a rocket. It’s dumb. This is the superior version by far
They will never include this game in the trilogy collection because of legal complications but imagine how good this would look
Both MGS and Twin Snakes are great. If you have the chance to play both, please do. I had a blast with both but I prefer the visuals of TS so I kinda like that one a littler better. Don’t really care much for the cutscenes, cause the gameplay imo makes up for it
I absolutely loved twins snakes as much as the original 10/10 would pay full price again
Best game on the GameCube imo
I originally sold my PS2 to get a GameCube to play the Resident Evils. I was glad when they ported this. As many know, the GameCubes library is pretty small. So getting a mature game like this was great. Exclusives were still a big deal back then.
I don’t know why the switch wouldn’t have this version of MGS 1 wouldn’t be part of the collection. It’s a GameCube exclusive. It should be there for sure.
