Is Metal Gear Solid The Master Collection Worth Buying?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 жов 2023
- Metal Gear Solid The Master Collection Volume 1 is now out. There's been a lot of conflicting information on this game and honestly, a lot of people who have reviewed the game without actually playing it much. I wanted to take an in-depth look at what this game offers, who it might be worth it for, who definitely will not enjoy it, and why. This game includes a variety of Metal Gear games including Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Snake's Revenge and a variety of bonus content. #metalgearsolid #gamereview #gaming

Sorry this was supposed to go up yesterday but I got stuck at the hospital for a while.
Hope everything went okay
You probably shouldn't judge Switch version without playing it. Some say that's the best version even at lower frame rate and perhaps cuz of the smaller screen? We're trying to sort out what's going on and assumptions don't have value without experience. Accuracy along with portability may make a no sale to a buy.
@@Rage-td9wv I've played it. It's got a lot of problems. Smaller screens can hide lack of detail but they don't add details. Who is "We" by the way?
@@Rage-td9wvThe switch cart is a joke and contains nothing. Ignoring that, the game ran better on Vita. That was years ago.
O boo hoo… just shut up and get your videos out on time
If you have the games on original hardware? No.
If you are capable of running the games well through emulation? No.
Only got a modern console/PC and want readily accessible versions of three revolutionary masterpieces? Absolutely. $20 a pop for a Metal Gear is a steal forever. And this will no doubt go on sale much like the Castlevania and Contra collections.
Just got the whole collection for 20$ 😎
@@coolkid9967 there you go! Enjoy!!
@@coolkid9967how
Got it for 43$ after tax I feel bad for Nintendo players but mainly playing it cause I’m hyped for the shake eater remake plus I’m hoping volume 2 will have mgs4 and Essie it’s ps3 prison
I think over time PC will be improved but it shouldn't have to be. The real low effort was on MGS 1 where they could have done way better imo
Yeah the controls got me frustrated a few times where I would accidentally set off lasers. Other than that, playing was fine.
@@scribble71891 there's nothing wrong with the controls. The game plays perfectly fine. That's just a you problem 😂
@@kildotgaming No reason to shill for Konami. Not everyone has to adore the MGS controls.
@kildotgaming it definitely isn't exclusive to me. Andshrew uploaded vids demonstrating that very thing. The analog controls for mgs1 are emulated wrong. It caused a few alerts for me in the PSG1's room of the weapon storage. Otherwise, it was fine.
@@scribble71891feels like the original to me
Honestly, while now it's a mixed bag whether or not is it worth it depending on various things, PC community's modding side quite surely will improve it's worth as more mods come out and at that point there's a chance it'll be more than worth it.
On PC we just Google that shit.
Great video Jay! This is a well put together video that deserves to be seen by more people
I just don't get how modders could add the 4k resolution support but Konami thought they couldn't lol
Just a combination of laziness and saving on development costs, the reuse of the HD collection as a base for this "new" set of remakes is evidence enough of the unwillingness to create a more refined experience for the 3d era games
@@threadschanged4252my guess is Konami released this collection to fund the mgs3 remake since Konami doesn’t have any faith in video games anymore
I bought it on switch digital and I’m enjoying it. I think 1 could have much more of an effort to it.
The Master Books are really cool I was happy those were included
I havent had many issues on ps5 so far but pc looked like a nightmare
What program did you use to play with better definition for MGS 1?
Really liked the review. You did a good job putting this together.
Thanks for the rundown my dude. Feeling nostalgic n the master collection will be the most convenient way for me to play regardless of what ive been hearing about the ports. ✌️
How is the controller support on PC? Xinput compatible for my Xbox pc controlpad? The interesting argunent for the PC version would be Reshade imo.
MGS1 back on PS1 at the time was phenomenal. What other games had better graphics, moving lips during cutscenes and not head bops lol but none had what mgs had. It was truly ahead of its time for what it was doing and it was amazing for it. Forever will be my favorite metal gear.
Hate to break it to you but MGS1 cutscenes were head bops not moving lips. Codecs on the other hand, had that
@@sonfable8809 check your eyes bruh, he said “moving lips during cutscenes and not head bops”
Which is false because during actual scenes there were no lips moving. It was only head movements so what I said is completely contrary to what OP said
Love the story on MGS1 .. My favorite Metal Gear game !
Is it true that mgs 1 runs at the pal version?
I mainly bought the collection because I never played the Solid games when they first released (being able to replay the NES games was a nice bonus). I got the Switch version because it was the only version I could find a physical copy of.
As you noted depending it has some nice goodies but I have the old hd collection on my PS vita with the original MGS psx with acid 1,2 and also the old collection on my Xbox one ( 360 version )
Been around since 98 the OG MGS1. I remember playing the demo (remember the free demos back then 😂) been hooked ever since. I may just wait for them to remake all of them like they're doing with MGS3 aka Delta.
Thank you. This is the most useful breakdown I've come across. I own a PS3, XBOX One and Switch. Played all the games back in the day, and I'm finally in the mood to play through them again. Will probably track down the HD collection over this "Master" collection.
Should be 39.99.
$20.00 unfinished product.
As someone who really likes this series (definitely one of my favorites), I own multiple copies of most of the mainline games across different platforms. Must have like 3 copies of MGS1 haha... With that said, I do feel like I'm "fine" with the collection. I completely understand and recognize that it has issues and certainly it feels like the bare minimum was done in certain points but... The games are still very much playable and enjoyable at the end of the day. I think a good part of what makes this "fine" for me is just the point of convenience. As I said, I have a few copies of the games, but I sure ain't pulling out my PS3 and reconnecting it, or using an emulator to play MGS1 or whatever... Literally I just wanna insert the disc into the console and play... and that's exactly what is offered here. These thoughts are for the PS5 version only, cause from what I understand the Switch version doesn't even have all the games on there and you have to download them, which is definitely not "convenient."
It would be more compelling to get if I could upload my saves from the ps3 hd collection. As much as I love those games, I'm far too lazy to start from scratch for a 3rd time.
Awesome analysis DJ, thanks.
What are you going on about slagging off the Switch Lite specifically? MGS 2&3 run internally at 720p regardless of platform (frustratingly). Why does it matter if it only runs at 720p in handheld mode when that is the resolution of the screen?
Absolutely worth owning if your an MGS fan.
What if I'm a newcomer? Would you recommend this collection?
Great video!
MGS1 would be good with integer scaling and overscan, option for CRT and Scanline filter.
Also option to remove texture filtering, I like the chunky pixelated textures but some people prefer filtering.
I'm gonna get MGS2 separately and wait for Volume 2. If that one includes at least MGS4, I'm getting it. Also hoping for Portable Ops.
I don't understand your point about the Switch Lite. As a 720p screen, MGS2 and 3 are going to display at their native resolution on that screen, rather than the blurry upscaling from 720p to 1080p you'd get on a 1080p screen, or the even worse scaling from 720p to 1080p internally, and then 1080p to 4K by the console or TV if you were on a 4K display. The framerate issue is definitely awful, but in terms of the actual resolution Switch Lite/handheld is basically the only place these games are going to look decent.
When I installed the game, I unplugged my Ethernet cable, to see what’s actually on the disc, I was baffled about how much content was actually missing, which is such a shame.
Also checked how much storage space was required when installing everything, I came out at around 75gb, and while I get that the back of the case says minimum 27gb, it’s still a huge difference.
PS5 and Xbox games let you install specific parts of games, so it won’t install everything if you choose so, this would’ve been great for the language packs especially honestly, or just languages in general, like with God of War Ragnarok for instance.
The reason I keep my old consoles is so I don't get swindled into buying substandard games like this. It amazes me how badly Konami fumbled what was an easy slam dunk.
I got them on my nintendo switch they play fine just how I remember them in 1998 2001 and 2005 I love the metal gear solid master collection
Great video this mate, subbed!
Playing this on the pc and with mods to 4k it looks good but i was expecting beter.
I just wish they tried harder on MGS 1. I'm fine with them just being in 1080p but random people on pc emulation can get MGS 1 on PSX looking better in like an hour than Konami did on the disk.
The collection is fine for the newcomer to the series. But I'm happy to still play the 360 version on the series X. The graphics are nice and crisp looking
I’ve been playing MGS2 on switch and so far the only problem I ran into was the game crashing out of nowhere and even so it’s only happened to me one time
I’m going to wait for a discount and buy it on my Xbox like I did for the Devil May Cry collection a while back
i played them enough not to miss them , i'll wait for the Acid spinoffs
I'll wait til it's on sale, I already have all these games on older consoles. Played them all, so not rushing on this.
Im enjoying the game so far. I wish the game ran better for MGS1 though
I will stick to bluepoints remaster on Series x and hope they release mgs 4 later. Would happily pay the same price for that alone.
Mgs 5 is always on sale for the amount of a cup of coffee, so not really needed.
Perhaps some of the Psp games in a collection
Not having twin snakes in this collection is ridiculous. Konami is essentially what Capcom was in the early 2010’s, just much worse lol.
I’m far from Konami’s biggest fan, but as far as Twin Snakes in particular goes, it’s still never had any sort of re-release almost 20 years later, there’s most likely licensing hurdles. Although it was acknowledged in the bonus material of this collection so perhaps they are looking into workarounds.
Honestly I like mgs1 having the OG res. I know it looks werid but I like it more for preservation
I don't mind it having it, just wish it had options. Even Halo 1 and 2 remastered had the ability to switch back and forth depending on your preference of how you'd like to play it. I guess the part that bothers me is that Konami has included options before on these types of things like the Castlevania collections which were really good about that sort of thing.
thats a good point too!@@DegenerateJay
I played metal gear solid HD collection on Xbox 360 back in 2013 and it was kinda ok I finish the whole 3 games
I have it on both Steam and Switch. Although the Switch version runs at 30fps, it really isn’t that bad. However, these games look beautiful on that OLED screen!
I now have the MGS collection on my PS2, PS3, and PS5.
I want Twin Snakes, Rising, Ghost Babel and Portable Ops even though they didn't leak
It's best on pc because it's already getting modded, we already had 2k and 4k resolution mods on day 1, and its really easy to install as well.
The only one I’d of absolutely died for and spent 100$ preorder on was a high rez MGS1 with maybe a reworked input
i got this for my ps5 digital as i just wanted to play them as i only own 2 and 3 but there packed away
As a person who bought a vita I can play all of them and it runs at 60 fps except MGS of course but even then the PS3/PSP works fine for the most part I’ve never experienced any problems.
Have you heard about the video from Arkham videos showing the Pattinson suit is coming to Arkham Knight
Hi, did you like playing splinter cell games ? I had fun playing those games as a kid
I could never get into Splinter Cell, personally. I had Pandora Tomorrow on PS2 about 18 years ago and bought Chaos Theory on Steam a few years ago to give the series another chance, as everyone says CT is the best SC game. I know why stealth purists often prefer SC, but I always enjoyed the Metal Gear games a lot more. Better story, characters, goofy elements, etc. Stealth is rewarded but not really forced on you unless you play on European Extreme (that results in a game over if you're spotted).
Twin snakes shouldve been an option
My only gaming system now is PC. Sold my PS4's and my bro took the PS3 when he moved out. So I'm probably gonna buy it at some point.
Is this collection good for ps4 ?
The physical copy was sold out almost everywhere on PS5. Walmart had 1 copy left so i immediately got it and now somewhat regret it. So far I'm disappointed. for the price i thought it would be a lot clearer but it looks like i'm playing on a VCR. It could've been ported a lot better. I downloaded a emulated version of MGS on the Atari VCS, and it looked and played 3xs better than this. But the best alternative is always playing it on the original console.
As someone who is complety catched from nostalgia i can say for me its definitly orth the price. I get these great games together with trophy lists which i can complete twiche cause ps4 and 5 version. For this game i will have a houndred+ hours of fun so how couldnt be worth the 60€?
I think the master collection is worth buying for someone who only just have a newer gen console or pc and for collectors as well and I would even say that achievement/platinum hunters would be recommended of getting this of course.
I have a PS3 and a copy of MGS4 and the HD Collection, along with a digital copy of MSG1. I also have a physical copy of MGS1, MGS2 and MSG3 (I also have Portable Ops and Twin Snakes, MGS:GZ and MGS5).
This is fine, to be honest. I think it's pushing it's price tag, given that some effort has had to be expended on this, but not enough. 1080p is welcome, but 4k should be the minimum.
The pressure sensitivity thing is really bad that it's missing. It's taking me a while to get used to it and I just don't like it. I keep wanting to do the pressure sensitivity. That's what I feel comfortable with.
The port of MGS1 is very, very lazy.
Never played any of these and got it on steam. Running it ultrawide in 4k auto hdr
I played the series for the first time in 2020 with the Legacy Collection. I jumped at the chance to have the games on modern consoles, some of them anyway. I am very much enjoying replaying 3 right now, but I know this collection could have been better and I wish it was. But it could have also been a lot worse, on consoles at least. Either way, great review Jay!
If you haven't played any of these games this is a great collection, but if you bought the HD Collection for Xbox 360 or the Legacy edition in PS3 there's not much of value besides the masterbooks and screenplays
I was going to get it on Switch until I heard the games are not on the cartridge.
I don't think I have enough space for it on my PS4.
If the PS4 version was physical with backwards compatibility it would be worth it for me.
I'm enjoying mgs master collection volume 1 on PS5 I only played mgs 4 & mgs 5🥂😎
I have a switch OLED and I never played a single Metal gear game. To be honest I didn’t even know about this series until I was a teenager when Smash Bris brawl was out but I had Wii. My dad had a PS3 but he didn’t have a Metal Gear game.
So I don’t know what to decide
If you like single-player games that are heavily story-driven, they are a must-play. Think of them as an interactive movie. Loads and loads of sweet cutscenes. If the Switch is all you have, or want, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it.
Well if nothing more at least it does give easier access to the games for people though I totally get the criticisms which are very fair.
When it comes to consoles, the only good thing about this collection is that players most likely won't have to rebuy for the 3rd time due to backwards compatibility finally becoming a standard feature with future generations.
for metal gear solid, they should’ve remastered it, in the same way they remastered DOOM zane QUAKE, frame rate improved, it’s 1080p, full screen, everything is clear now
Well it's amazing to play on the go and I love these mgs games
Yeah it is nice that it's portable since there hasn't been a portable copy really since the Vita. I wish they put more into switch though. It can run way better if devs would just optimize the games. Smash bros is an example of that.
@@thequestionable1413 I'm just happy I get to replay these classis games 😍 and I'm getting the ps5 version today
@@kingdomheartsgamer8771 totally and I think Jay is too from what he said just more frustrated with MGS 1
I love these gamed and I got tired of emulating them. It's definitely not the perfect pc release but it's better then nothing
On the plus side it's not GTA The Trilogy THE DEFINITIVE EDITION
You're the first person i've seen who says MGS2 and 3 look better in the master collection than in the HD collection. I've been hearing about massive frame drops and subtitle/audio issues to say the least
I also thought it looked better tbh. I haven't been noticing any of that on Xbox Series X. What platform are they talking about?
That's why watch UA-cam channels that have equipment to do extensive research of how video games perform. Most channels on UA-cam nowadays just do videos for views, clicks , and purchasing of items so it makes them extra 💰.
@@CAPCOM784 Cool
The version on the Xbox runs pretty ok , the only thing I hate is the fact that there’s no way to exit the game , also mgs1 looks horrible, the version on the classic looks a hole lot better, I’m really hoping that they give us a update soon to fix it a little bit.
Thanks for the MGS video
I owned MGS HD Collections Xbox digital. Playing on Series S MGS2 MGS3 confirmed 1980P Resolution. frame rate really no issues Series S.
Isn't mgs1 the 50hz version instead of the 60hz
If you choose european and not north american yes
@@TofuSG98 oh right so you can choose
@@jackle-ko2wm I think so
u r correct, the euro versions are in 50hz as that is how pal versions used to release. with these you download all the locaztions version that came out in '98.
had the same collection on ps3 with the 2 psp games
You should do a review on Assassins Creed Black Flag now that the game is 10 years old.
I think you’re wrong on the switch. I purchased it on the switch for portability and it serves it purpose. I have a PS1-5 but the Switch experience for this is where it’s at 🤷🏾♂️
If Konami pushes out the Same quality as this, for the MGS3 Remake? I can feel hell will come for Konami.
its worth it on modern CONSOLES. But not on switch if youre picky on framerate.
If volume 2 doesn't have twin snakes I'm not getting either collection.
Only if it had Twin Snakes
In other words, there's nothing here to compel me to shell out money since I'll be getting a decidedly superior experience playing them on an emulator. Don't get me wrong. I'd LOVE to give them my money (I bought the physical copy of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster - as well as Asian copies of FFX and FFXII -), and I have all of the ROMs for those games for every system that they came out for - as well as the cartridges I grew up with). However, this is such a lazy crash grab.
The emulated version of the first Metal Gear Solid on PC, absolutely takes a dump on this new collector version..
idk i kind of just need mgs 3 and mgs 4
They should of just put the twin snakes version in this bundle. Cut Nintendo a check
I have the legacy collection I don't need this . I hear the English UK version runs at 50 hz
Buy this for $60 or Legacy collection for $100? I already have MGS4 and V. I have PS5
If you want to play have fun and don’t want to min max it’s great but defiantly not on switch
Konami fucking up like normal
As someone who never got a chance to play MGS series before, I am happy for this. I have a Gaming PC, PS5, and a switch.. and I ended buying this game for the switch. Being an old game, I think it’s fine playing on the switch and the portable option is nice. I do wish all 3 games should have fit on the disc/cartridge. Oh well..
The only reason i buy it because i want to keep the games as a collection. For me, the hd collection on ps3 much more worth it.
i'll wait until they fix the resolution and give use PC support
Absolutely worth it. Loving every minute of it. Nintendo Switch version:
If approaching this from the pc standpoint: you can EASILY play all of these games far better if you emulate them
Just got on the switch. Kinda disappointed. It has issues with some of the codec conversations where its like you hit a button. Had to restart like 3 times because I thought I fucked up.
thats how the games always been, pushing any face buttons causes the codec to stop playing the audio.
emulation is by far the best way to go
