      I have both The Twin Snakes and the original Metal Gear Solid game and I can confirm they're both enjoyable. The major problem with The Twin Snakes, aside from some parts of the voice acting, is the lack of VR Trainning.

      @@filipeflower Oh, I already am one. I’ve played Twin Snakes, 2, 3 (on the 3DS of all systems), 4, and Phantom Pain. Heck, I even have a reproduction cart of Ghost Babel. Sure, it’s not an original cart and the game isn’t even canon, but It’s still a fun game. The only games I still want to play that I haven’t are the original two Metal Gears, the original Metal Gear Solid, and Rising: Revengeance.

      The original 2D Metal Gear games are available on 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence' for the PS2 (that's a very rare game nowadays), 'Metal Gear Solid HD Collection' for the PS3, PS Vita and Xbox 360 and finally, if you get your hands on 'Metal Gear Solid The Legacy Collection' (only for the PS3), you can find the first two 2D Metal Gear games in there too. Just make sure you enter MGS 3's main menu before you start the game. It should be there.

      Idk I think mgs is lighting in a bottle,
      I never in all the rest of the games felt the literal fatalism involved with conflict that mgs made me feel from the tone of the voice to the colors chosen for the atmosphere.
      Like mgs gives me a sick feeling like real victims where involved and they where in wars and predication for profit.
      The rest felt like a action movie.
      Mgs made me look at suffering the other games said its ok to look away and not look back.
      And my first memory of mgs is not psycho mantis its a japanese cut scene on mgs vr missions.
      The memory of Maryl being blown away and my 9 year old innocence kinda going with her.
      I remember that to this day on a sunny day in my room.
      I couldnt process it I just was paralyzed by the idea.
      Tell I had grown passed it.

    The original dialogue for MGS1 wasn't done in a studio. It was done in a hotel room. It was rented for the weekend and all the voice actors and the sound producer were all in there when recording was happening. Along with pizza boxes and soda.

    Kojima wanted the Twin Snakes to be different from the original. Originally the director of the Twin Snakes was doing a more 1:1 remake with better graphics but Kojima was like dude we want you to make it crazy.

      Knowing Kojima and how protective he is of his work, I'll bet he did that just to highlight how a different director would've handled the same material; MGS4 still uses MGS1's visuals for flashbacks (and the Japanese version uses MGS1's audio; the English version only uses TTS audio because of audio quality issues). Kojima's said he doesn't like remakes.
      But even if that's not true, "Kojima wanted the cutscenes to be crazy" doesn't matter any more than "Lucas wanted Greedo to shoot first."

      @@ForceWave-1139 he DID want the game to be completely different. There are many interviews in which he mentions this. It's like a "self" sabotage, by making TTS a "bad" remake, the original MGS stands as the best version.

    The approach to the cutscenes in TTS is honestly an interesting idea. Silicon Knights was originally planning to do the original cutscenes one for one, but Kojima specifically asked them to change things and hire the new director. I think Kojima's rationale is that, in-universe, Shadow Moses is what made Snake legendary, and the story of what really happened there gets more exaggerated the more its retold over the years.
    In-universe, Snake himself is always gruff and undersells his experiences in MGS1. "I'm just an old killer," "I only took out the tank with grenades because it was all I had," etc. And, in a meta sense, MGS1 was also the standard to which all subsequent entries would be compared, and the love the fandom has for MGS1 would also distort and exaggerate as the series and time wore on.
    The series is frequently concerned with the concept of legacy and the passing on of experiences from one generation to the next, and TTS' modified direction is almost a pointed criticism of the fandom in this way- the lionization of the original and inflated regard for the games of our youth is exemplified in the over the top action of TTS' cutscene direction because, that's how awesome the game was in our memories! And, considering how *insanely* meta the series got in MGS2 and 4, it is entirely possible that this was deliberate intention by Kojima and Silicon Knights under his advice.

      That's always the problem in treating your original, 'lighting in a bottle' story as a legend and making it too meta or 4th wall breaking. It loses its original tone for campy cheese and over the top gimmicks. There was no need for Kojima to do that and seeing his track record with that project and the other MGS titles after 1, I can say he suffered from the Snyder/Michael Bay Complex. When their ego gets so big that it takes over their work. It becomes static in tone but to save face from being dull/boring they add gimmicks to catch an audience attention when the writing is lackluster in emotional tone.
      I believe Kojima had a major stake in making one of the greatest games of all time but as I said about the other directors mentione, I also believe he also had a team of writers to help storyboard and limit ideas to be in a coherent sense

    The PS1 version of the Sniper Wolf death scene places the camera to show you both her gun and Otacon behind it.
    This makes it even sadder that she asks for her gun. Because at first you think she might call for Otacon but no.
    It makes you feel even sadder for him.

    The weirdest thing is that... the cutscene changes were requested BY Kojima, and changed. They were initially accurate to the ps1 version.

    I might be wrong, but I always got the feeling that Otacon’s relationship with Sniper Wolf was always a one-way thing. She was clearly a cruel person but tolerated him (with amusement maybe) because he was kind to her wolf-dogs. To extend the character analogy; not only is Otacon a nerd getting bullied by a jock, but he’s also the nerd that fell in love with the prom queen, who barely even notices him. The fact that Snake doesn’t ONCE joke or ridicule him for that, further vindicate him as a ‘reforming’ character. As we know, character progression equals good storytelling. This of course is one of the purposes of Otacon’s character in a narrative sense; similar to Meryl, he’s introduced as a way to show Snake learning how to be compassionate and sympathetic to someone who has none of the attributes that he feels describe him as a person (strength, endurance, ruthlessness) but they ultimately discover that they do have common ground in their bravery and determination, and of course Otacon finds his bravery through meeting Snake. So they improve each other, which is REALLY good storytelling.
    The Otacon love concept is then flipped over for MGS2, where his step-sister Emma clearly has strong feelings for him, but he never reciprocated (possibly because he was more into her mother…), as seen by ‘EE… I could never do that” when she asks him to ‘look at her as a woman’ as she dies.
    Incidentally, Meryl is introduced first, as a first step in Snake’s character progression - his first interaction is with a person who idolises his pre-existing macho persona - the hard man - which feeds his ego. He in turn boosts her confidence in return, and Meryl becomes cocky, which is ultimately punished by getting shot by Sniper Wolf. If this isn’t a statement on character progression by the storyteller, I don’t know what is. And of course the loss of Meryl reverberates within Snake for the rest of the game as he experiences guilt and regret.

      It hits even harder because Wolf would usually fall in love with her prey, meaning she might've been in love with who's now Otacon's best friend, which is a big topic in friend related stories, the girl you like likes your friend and not you
      Otacon is my favorite character in the series, way deeper than he looks, not a 'loser' like his Otaku persona might indicate, he had many partners around during the story, or at least people attracted to him, this just adds to his tragic character of how he never had who he wanted, and everybody dies around him
      Everybody gets something in the end, Jack? He still has Rose, Snake? He had Meryl at the end of 1, and got some peace at the end of 4
      Otacon is the character who lives to suffer, a living tragedy under the accursed name of his father
      "Why am i always the survivor? Why wolf?"

    It's funny to me since Kojima has said he wanted this to be different and crazy. I've always assumed this was to reinforced an idea from MGS2, the legend of Solid Snake. A story filtered through the eyes of who survived it and spread the legend. Natasha wrote a whole book on what happened, and they made VR training missions based on it. It wouldn't surprise me if Twin Snakes is what the world believed happened. A bastardized retelling to suit their needs.

      Someone on an MGS fan group on FB made a great point. He basically said TS could be Otacon retelling Snake’s Story after 4, it would make sense why Snake would be pulling off those stunts.

      @@songoku9348 Idk i dont think you really need to think about it that hard assuming MGS1 and 2 take place in the same canon (with tts being developed after 2, as essentially porting 1 to 2's engine) how does vamp walk on water? how did fortune actually deflect all those missles without the field generator using actual telekenesis. You dont even need to look at MGS2 How are the TTS stunts make any less "sense" than a floating wacky ghost man literally from the original psx game LOL this is hurting my brain bro

      ​@@songoku9348the main problem with that theory is why would he go out of his way to talk about how snake did a back flip 360 quick scope to pop the woman he loved in the lungs then bring up the detail about slipping on some ice in her final moments or even trying to convey that when he met his now best friend snake picked him up by his collar and shook him multiple times and pointed his gun at an injured unarmed man for having a bad memory

    You know, of all the added LOL OTACON FELL moments they added in TTS, the one during Sniper Wolf's death actually was a great addition in my opinion. Dude is already injured, but is hurrying to grab her gun to give it to her in a moment where time isn't on their side, and falls down as his pace exceeds his abilities. You can hear the pain and anguish as he collapses both from the pain, frustration. It's one of the few moments I actually thought was pretty OK.

    I met Rob Paulsen at a con q&a panel two years ago, and when asked about his video game roles, he brought up Twin Snakes and I lost my shit because I never realized he played Gray Fox.
    I also got to hear him go from Carl Wheezer to Gray Fox in half a second, and it was an incredibly surreal moment. He was so chill and seemed like such a nice guy.

      His son, Ash, is a huge fan of MGS. When he found out his dad had a minor role in MGS 2 he was awestruck.. But Rob, himself, forgot he did it because doing voiceover roles is just part of the grind for him and he never knows if any game he does work for is going to be a hit so he figured at the time that it may not have been worth remembering.

    See, I didn't have a problem with the Cobra Unit dying after a nonlethal fight because it didn't feel like I killed them. If you recall Sigint's codec call, he said that they had bombs implanted to prevent capture. Other than the fact that they likely knew they needed to die, it also felt like a logical step for them to end themselves, and it doesn't feel like it opposed the concept of a nonlethal fight. That being said, it is still a massive issue with Twin Snakes and SoL

      That one makes sense, but it's hypocritical to criticize The Twin Snakes for its "over-the-top" stuff when most of the players are okay with that the majority of the Metal Gear did with over-the-top stuff as well.

      @@filipeflower See the issue isn't with the over the top nature of the sequels themselves, rather it's that it contradicts the grounded nature of MGS1, which was only really subverted in a few key moments, such as Psycho Mantis, or Vulcan Raven

      For real? I don't think I had ever listened to that call... I do still have a bit of an issue with them being included in The Sorrow's fight but that does make sense.
      And no, it isn't hypocritical to take issue with TTS' campiness @filipeflower. Games/works in the same series shouldn't be confined to the tone of the original, and just because other works retroactively change the series' overall tone doesn't mean each piece is ok to share it. For example, "The Terminator" and "Terminator 2" are almost in completely different genres; if T1 were to get a remake (which by nature would be different from a game remake but the point still stands) and it was turned into a straight action movie like T2, fans aren't illogical for saying that the original's approach to horror and thriller sequences were neutered, which fundamentally changes the tone of the film (The same goes for Alien and Aliens if you're more familiar with those).
      And this has been seen throughout games as well. Probably the best example is the Zelda series: Ocarina of Time has a largely different tone than Majora's Mask, which has a completely different tone compared to The Wind Waker, which has a completely different tone compared to Twilight Princess, which has a completely different tone compared to Skyward Sword, which has a somewhat different tone than Breath of The Wild. If Windwaker were to be remade with Twilight Princess' gloominess, or Majora's Mask were to be remade with Skyward Sword's joviality, it wouldn't be be unfair to say that the original's appeal was lost because other games in the same franchise share that new tone. Their tone didn't remain intact.
      TTS' campiness may be more in line with what people might expect out of MGS, but its gags are often inappropriately placed and ironically dilute the story instead of truly adding to it.

      @@nitrocharge2404 I think you get it. That said MGS did put a lot of effort into realism and or naturalism beyond just researching military tech. It's why they put so many details into things like melting ice, location based damage etc. Even the idea behind the controls (however annoying or flawed) with the pressure sensitivity was to emulate squeezing the trigger of a gun and trigger discipline. And in response to filipe, hell, Twin Snakes has some of these touches purely by being built off MGS2 but then it goes out of it's way to undermine the attempts at realism made by the gameplay or story by having wacky cutscenes where people can bounce around and jump off missiles.

    The thing I dislike the most, is the fact that the voices don’t echo.
    When I played the original, one of the things that stuck with me the most, was how the constant echo made the character’s words resonate with me more, especially in pivotal and profound moments that tackle the themes of the games or the arcs of the characters.

    Since I played this game before the original MGS, I justified all the crazy things Snake was doing, like fly kicking Metal Gear Rex to the fact that he was younger. I even used a line from MGS2 to prove my theory. When liquid tells snake, “not so young anymore, ey snake?” My childhood self thought, “no wonder he can’t do those crazy moves anymore! He’s older! That makes sense!” Lmao I guess it helped me stay immersed lol

      @@filipeflower rolling down the stairs is more technique I can assume.
      Snake probably ran into situations where he had to roll down stairs more during the time gap between MGS2 and MGS4 and as a result learned how to roll down stairs without an issue.

    With the “what are you waiting for?! Shoot!” I absolutely love hearing the voice actor kinda struggle to keep up snakes voice while using a higher pitch.
    To me, it added to snakes character weirdly enough. It was like snake, this legendary hero, finally had a frantic moment when taking care of a rookie. It really let me know he cared, as it was one of the few times you can hear the voice crack.
    Later on in the original, when snake calls out Meryl right after defeating liquid, bare knuckled, bruised, and beaten, he sounds almost like a different person. He didn’t have time to worry about appearances, Meryl was in danger.
    Those little things added so much to my playthrough, and I’m sad to hear that it was mostly removed in Twin Snakes.

      In the original game, it felt like Snake was putting on a persona to disconnect himself from his feelings and the trauma he's endured. In The Twin Snakes, he sounds like a caricature of what Snake sounded like in MGS1. From what I understand, the voice direction for The Twin Snakes was influenced by MGS2 and how recognizable Hayter's later roles as "Iroquois Plisskin" in MGS2 and Naked Snake in MGS3 sort of simplifed the Snake voice and just made him sound like a macho action hero rather than a human with thoughts and feelings putting up a front to keep people at arm's length.

      Yeah, well, the thing is, in MGS 1, the momentary lapses into goofiness managed to add much-appreciated levity without mercilessly savaging the mood. You knew the game was just giving you the wink, wink, nudge, nudge treatment to make the experience less heavy and depressing as it could have been if it were all played straight. All the jokes and humor were added with restraint, with care, always with the bigger picture in mind. This is why so much of the humor was obviously of the fourth-wall-breaking kind. It helped it to fit perfectly, because it was obviously silly, and obviously not a straight part of the plot. Mei Ling made fun of us for having a mono TV, in-game, through actual spoken dialog - but it obviously was just for giggles.
      MGS1 managed to perfectly mesh the way-over-the-top sci-fi elements with the otherwise straight-laced contemporary military drama. They didn't sabotage the mood, because everything was done in careful balance. A supernatural special forces unit with teleporting psychics and minigun-toting muscle-bound spirit-warriors felt perfectly plausible in that otherwise realistic backdrop, because great effort was put into making those individual pieces comfortably fit together.
      That effort, for whatever reason, ceased immediately following the success of MGS1. All creative restraint was cast aside, and it was all just a matter of whatever ridiculous idea *someone* spitballed to the wall at any given moment. Unfiltered, goofy nonsense.
      It's actually embarrassing trying to make the case that MGS1 is one of the best videogame experiences of all time, because the burden is always having to explain away the rest of the franchise.

    MGS1 is one of those games where you get sucked into the world and feel the game. The Snowy Dark Night, the Blue Steel and fluorescent lights. Idk how else to explain it but metal gear solid gives me the same feeling you could get when you see a liminal space (hate the overuse of this word, but you get what I’m saying). Shadow Moses almost feels like it’s own character. I feel like I’m playing it for the first time every time I play it and it’s the only game that gives me that feeling which is why I love it so much. I feel like I’m playing the game in 1998 even tho I was born in 2003. Idk this game connects with me on a spiritual level, like just Shadow Moses with the OST, it’s comfortable in a way, like I’m visiting my old middle or elementary school, or an old friends house.

      Good description. This game does miracles with the coherent lighting, colorscheme, music, soundscape, etc. The mix of green and blue dark colors work so well. The stealth effects with green variation is just a cherry on top of it all. It is one of those games that gets burned to your memory, and the memory is flooded with the main colors from the game visuals (green, blue, gray) along with other obscure highlights from the game: "huh, what was that noise?", knocking on walls, stepping on wet surfaces, the static jamming and electric buzzing noises from the game and the soundtrack, the menu sound effects etc.
      Only System Shock 2 had similar effect to me as MGS1.

I think it might... of been from the same one where he was saying when they recorded MGS1 they weren't in a sound proof room and so the recording conditions were really poor and every time a vehicle would drive past or a plane flew over, they'd have to do their lines again. But yeah, Hayter was very excited to re record dialogue for TTS.

    Thats why the RE1 Remake is favorite Remake of all time. It took what worked from the original and added and enhanced what the former lacked. It hit the right balance of honoring its source material while doing its own thing that it surpassed the original imo. The Twin Snakes did the opposite.

      My favorite remake is Lunar silver star to silver star story complete, revamped story that massively changes plot points and adds a bit more chemistry to the characters, probably using Lunar 2 (sega CD version) as a blueprint, so much so that the Lunar 2 remake barely changed anything.

    17:22 to be fair to Snake Eater, it’s explained the cobras used microbombs as they couldn’t be captured nor surrender in combat, so even if Snake used non lethal weapons they would still just Kill themselves. Also speaks to the story where the only boss that Snake actually kills is The Boss herself.

    I literally just played Metal Gear Solid 1 yesterday for the first time ever with the new Master Collection, and honestly I loved it the way it was and am glad that the Master Collection is just dropping these games on the PS5 as they were when they first came out. It was great, I wouldn't change a thing.

    Great video but I do have to disagree about the soundtrack not being integral to the experience of MGS1. That’s personal opinion I suppose, but from the main menu to the closing credits, those tracks are so masterfully woven into the experience of the game.

      @@nickd1978 Yes it was worth pointing out. As a musician I thought nothing of it but then realised video games do this all the time. A minor is also the predominant key of Red Dead Redemption, whereas in The Witcher 3 it is majority D minor with some dalliances onto E minor (opening in White Orchard) and G minor (Crones of Crookback Bog theme).

    The original ps1 has a cold steely feel to the game which to made it the best in the series. Maybe because there is no facial movement, but it feels like watching a play. The characters in this game are very cool compared to the sequels - which tried to mimic the first MGS anyway.

      Yeah, but it's a hit and run tactic, you can't spam stinger missiles, and right when you shoot the missile he turns at your direction, but the explosion prevents him from shooting, allowing you to get some cover

    "Transitioning MGS into a movie would remove this depth."
    I know this isn't directly related to MGS but I wanted to share this: I've never seen anyone else mention this, but the film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is basically the only correct way to adapt MGS2 to the big screen. I know, it's the sequel to the game you're talking about, but the point still stands. Most of the plot is dropped, and a lot of elements are stripped down, because they don't work in a film setting, but the core essence is still there. It opens with our genetically-modified super-soldier engaging in a covert mission on a ship, discovering a key plot element that'll come into play later. Our hero investigates a conspiracy that's more than what it appears. Turns out the government has been under the control of a shadow organization for decades, as they guide progress and shape society the way they see fit. Their ultimate plan is to use an AI housed in an impregnable fortress to manipulate information and erase opposition. It ends with the protagonist battling a foe who has a personal connection to his past.
    Kojima understands how to tell a story better than most. The MG games all feel like he wrote a movie, then figured out how to transform that into a satisfying video game. They shouldn't work, but they do anyway.

    Me being a musician (and before I was one) music has always been a crucial make or break asset to EVERY game for me . And the fact that you compared in detail the music theory of both games is amazing to me and heavy attention to detail that a lot of these comparisons leave out. Sure they show how the music is different but they never go into the actual details and explaining the music theory behind it. And that was extremely entertaining that you showed in detail that side of these games. For example I had no idea all the music besides a few were in the key of A minor! Which makes sense to me now as minor keys are always used for sad/ominous songs. And I think it’s amazing how Escape and duel are the same songs but with small additions and changes that emphasizes and changes the whole atmosphere of the song! Who ever did the composition for this game is a musical genius to say the least. Also I’m now subscribed to you. I can tell you put immense effort to the these videos especially after watching this one

    I’ve been obsessing over this series since 1999. I clicked on this fully expecting to learn nothing (I’ve watched and read A LOT of mediocre MGS retrospectives). The soundtrack being almost entirely in A minor blew my mind. I’ve listened to it a lot, I even have the damn thing on vinyl, and I never put that together, especially in the context of why the MGS OST works so well compared to Twin Snakes. I always just said, “the original is all atmosphere that makes you feel a sense of place, the music is actually part of the environment, while the Twin Snakes is just Matrix rip-off techno garbage fight music and nothing more.” The mechanics of why that actually is are fascinating. There’s no way that was unintentional.
    Really well done all the way through. I’m subscribing and I’ve already downloaded this onto my phone. Very thoughtful analysis nicely summarizing and bringing new ideas to something we’ve all been talking to death since 2004. What more was there to say about why Twin Snakes is a miss? Quite a bit, actually. 👍

    What also hurts with the audio is lack of definition. Codec and Outside convos in OG Metal Gear have extra modulation or background noises added to dialogue. They sound like they are in long empty hallways, or outside in the wind. Twin Snakes barely pays attention to this at all. It's also sad to see probably the worst dialogue performance from Rob Paulsen.

    This was a fantastic and refreshing introspective on the greatest game ever made. What I love about watching various video essays on MGS1 is that not only does everyone have a different interpretation of this game and it's comparison to TTS but I also learn something new each time when I thought I knew it all. The cohesion you mentioned with the key of the songs in the original is something I never noticed before and blew my mind. Excellent work.

    The stealth-prototype assault on the elevator was genuinely fucking terrifying the first time I played it. The rising musical score, Otacon's frantic screaming, the slow build up to the reveal. Young me was honestly cold, shivering, truly scared of whatever was happening.
    The Twin Snakes sounds like Otacon reading the instructions on the back of a pack of toilet paper.

    IMHO I'd say that the quintessential pinnacle of how a remake is to be designed/developed is none other than 'REmake' (Resident Evil) from 2002! It retains certain core gameplay elements (tank controls) from the original games, while implementing entirely brand new ones (defense weapons, crimson heads)! They've even managed to alter and improve some of the story/plot points that are now officially considered canon with the series. Seriously, CAPCOM really set the bar as far as pioneering a template for how to remake/reimagine an older game with finesse!
    Of course, many could argue that the RE2 & RE3 remakes rival RE1's, now that they've all been officially released! Suffice it to say that those incarnations wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the blueprint that was initially laid out after the first REmake!

    The cinematic aspect of the original is the main point of this game. I remember showing the first level to my sister, who's not a gamer, and her excitement was pumped up when the Metal Gear Solid tittle appeared. She said, it looks cool and like watching a movie

      in response to your point, it's more to do with the screenplay than the audio, most people wouldn't have a problem if they kept the screenplay the same, the whacky cutscenes make a lot of people not care about the plot.
      The visual storytelling is the reason most people return, as long as it tells it the same way as it did when they were younger then most are willing to ignore the gameplay and audio quality changes.

    From the music to the performances, this is exquisite. I'm a particular fan on this about the visuals:

    I'm massively anal about 'atmosphere' and tone myself so it was really satisfying to see someone describing it so well and immersing me in it with this video
    I just sat here in silence and watched it all and didn't even realise it was essentially an hour because I was sunk into it which just instantly shows that you know what you're talking about when it comes to tone/immersion/ambience etc

    MGS2 was the first Metal Gear game I played, so when I played TTS the cutscene direction didn't seem crazy to me at all. It seemed like it fit in with what I had already seen in MGS2.

    A side note about the cutscenes in Twin Snakes: the director originally wanted to remake the scenes 1:1 to the PS1 version, but Kojima insisted they be overcranked to absurd. As a result, what Twin Snakes feels like is the embellished "Legend" of Shadow Moses as opposed to what really happened. Considering TS borrows a lot of aspects from MGS2, one of those main themes was how Solid Snake was seen as being beyond legendary, but also that what he did was "so absurd" that no one would believe it.
    EDIT: Aaaaand I JUST got to the 44 minute mark x3.

      Yup. Major kudos for him showing the actual quote at 52:39 as well as so many have misquoted or misremembered who said it or what was said. There are two layers of irony here. One being Kojima not wanting it to turn out like the 1:1 shot for shot Psycho remake and it turning out much worse. There's a misconception that Kojima asked for absurd shots when all he asked and told the director to do what felt natural to them and to use their better judgement and not to be restricted by following his existing shots.
      The second layer of irony being 52:39 "... I would never do something he wouldn't want." Kojima gave him free reign and the results it seems were not liking at the time or if they were then his opinion has/had changed if later interviews on how he doesn't see Twin Snakes as a remake, saying how someone else should go about remaking MGS, it's exclusion from the HDCollection and Legacy Collection and it being ignored in any official promo or evolution material of MGS and the Dejavu mission weren't enough.

You're doing precisely that with the original MGS and I don't see you criticizing yourself because of that. Plus, I'll have you know that I've playing video games since the 90s and I only managed to get my hands on The Twin Snakes in 2018. So think twice before accusing me without even knowing who you're talking to.

    Personally, I think Rob Paulsen did a phenomenal job as Gray Fox in The Twin Snakes. There’s also the novelty of imagining Yakko Warner in a Cyborg Ninja outfit.
    When I first played MGS back in the day, I had been expecting the DARPA Chief and Gray Fox to be one and the same as a twist *because* they shared the same voice actor and sounded exactly alike (cybernetic agony aside). I remember asking myself “How’s the DARPA Chief warning me about claymore lines when he died if a heart attack in front of me earlier?!”
    The Twin Snakes is so goofy in comparison to the PS1 version, and insultingly easy, but to be completely honest, I had *LOADS* of fun playing it over and over again.

    I played the original as, perhaps, a 10 year old, and loved it (and was obsessed with the PS-magazine demo for weeks). Obviously I didn’t understand the story until I was older. But when I was 17(ish), suddenly, TTS came out and I was enamoured. It was certainly different, and laughable in places (that 360 jump over the door liquid is behind) but it was fun! It was fantastic! It’s not the original but it’s good fun. I took it for what it was and enjoyed it. But that was, what, 15 years ago? This video is fantastic and makes me remember that, really, the original is what I remember. Cheers buddy

    This was one of the best video essays I’ve ever watched on my favorite video game of all time. A majority of the fandom tends to cut Twin Snakes too much slack. I feel the the tonal shift from the PSX version was just too glaring and completely took me out of the experience. I would drag the broken gameplay but you’ve already done a fantastic job at it. Kudos. Hates off!

    Personally, I feel Otacon tripping during Sniper Wolf's death may have done more to show their relationship, like Otacon's mental state is too unstable from seeing his love like this that he can't walk properly. Of course, it doesn't help that Otacon falling over is a trend in TTS

      If he didn't scream the way he does when falling I would see your point. The goofy yell does a lot to undercut the emotion, if he only tripped or just let out a little pained grunt it would work, but he does a cartoon yelp instead.

    The way I see it,it was remade for the Nintendo fans that missed out on the original ps1 release. I played both and enjoyed both considering that twins snakes was a special treat for GameCube owners who never got to play the original. Back then growing up I didn’t have every console so I was happy to be receiving a metal gear on GameCube.

      This is basically what happened with me. I haven't played the original Metal Gear Solid for this very reason. The Twin Snakes was an enjoyable experience for me, so I guess I need to try out the original on something portable like PS Vita.

    The differences between the scores of both games remind me of those between the music from the original 1993 DOOM by Bobby Prince and the one from the PS1 port by Aubrey Hodges.
    The difference in atmosphere and tone is huge.

    Great video! Lately, I've been replaying TTS over MGS1 because some of the gameplay conveniences like shooting down cameras and reduced backtracking, but everything you've said about the atmosphere, music, colors, cutscenes, and voice acting are all true.
    If MGS1 is ever remade, I would like to see a game similar to the REmake. The original level design is expanded upon to fit the new mechanics and like you said, players can influence how the story progresses. I actually thought about a scenario where Sniper Wolf can be saved if you tranquilize her. First-person aiming and other mechanics should be better balanced so that certain gameplay moments are negatively affected. Heading down Communication Towers B is a bit frustrating because of the gun cameras and the fact that you need to constantly throw chaff grenades to disable them. Shooting them in TTS alleviates this. Ocelot and Raven's fights would need are the ones that would need the most revision due to how dependent they were on the original's mechanics. The rest of the boss fights play mostly the same in TTS so I don't mind the added features from MGS2.
    Thanks again, I'm subscribed to your channel now.
    Edit: I actually enjoy TTS's gameplay since it's liberating to go breeze through some of the more frustrating sections from MGS1. The presentation changes are what ruin the game for me.

    Great video! I actually played through twin snakes first before beating the original several years later. In addition to Gray Fox’s changed voice actor, they changed some of his dialogue as well. Both games are enjoyable but if I’m playing through it again, I’ll choose the original for that music

    The difference in visual styles between mgs1 and 2 isn't just merely due to graphical limitations, the grittiness of the original is an integral part of the experience and storytelling, it really felt like you were in a brutal, decrepit, abandoned nuclear facility because of this. Similarly, in MGS2, the respective cleanliness of the visuals added to its storytelling - by reinforcing the theme of simulation. It was stupid to just port the visual style of the latter over to the remake of the former.

    You raise a lot of valid points, but the whole remake thing was in its infancy back when the twin snakes was released, while today it's very common alongside various remasters. I think most gamecube owners were already quite happy to get a graphically updated MGS version and some of the weirder changes in terms of tone do reflect the bizarre direction Kojima was taking the franchise into with MGS 2, so it could be seen as a preview of sorts for the feel of things to come. It's a product of its time, and should really be judged as such and not solely through the critical lens of 2021 hindsight.

    Something super cool about the 'nodding' from the original game. It's actually coded to nod the character model's heads based on audio ques! that way regardless of what language the game is being played in all provides a semi-realistic and dynamic head movements.

      It was done as a cost and time saving measure for animating butt loads of cutscenes. Apparently the language used also effects when the bobbing occurs.

    Wow, this is an amazingly and professionally done review/comparison. About 95% of the stuff said, I’ve heard it in my head at least once in my life. I grew up playing MGS1 on PS1, I have and will always consider it, the best non-kids PS1 game out there. While I was a hardcore MGS fan and owned a GC, I have no idea why I never made an attempt at getting Twin Snakes. I grew up as geeky tech kid so I was around when UA-cam first came to existence. I was there for all the AMV and gameplay/tributes era of UA-cam. And during so, every time I saw a tribute of MGS, they’d always use footage from Twin Snakes. That always annoyed me because it wasn’t the original and the whole scenes look weird. For Christ’s sake, Otacon looks like a white long haired women in the game. Twin Snakes is a disrespect to the franchise in my opinion. And while I can go on and on, I today have more of a foundation to hate the game lol. Why change the score… the score is what makes MGS1. So mucho to say.. anyways, awesome video!!!

    No, that part where you activate the guards attention and drop down the railing to reach the door in the remake is a utilization of stealth mechanics, you distracted the guard, remained hidden. It's a mechanic because you utilized the way the game allows you to operate to achieve your goal, and it's stealth because you did so without being seen.

      Don't feel bad, you only didn't have a frame of reference, it's like sonic adventure dreamcast vs director's cut, you can grow up with the latter and see no wrong with it, but it's flawed when you look from the viewpoint of the original.

    Not only was Naomi's voice acting slaughtered, (did they drop her British accent to emphasize her facade?) But I can't believe they let this out the door with Raven's voice acting. It went from truly feeling like you're dealing with an intimidating superhuman, to... Saturday-morning cartoon villain. I couldn't even finish the game because of how tone-deaf the dialogue became. That lack of essence alone destroyed any impact it was supposed to have on us.

    I found the voice acting and crazy cutscenes great actually. I genuinely couldn't see how they were hollow or bad, and since Metal Gear Solid has always been supposed to be the video game equivalent of an insane action movie, I thought the crazy over-the-top cutscenes were fitting. Also I feel like saying Otacon's character was completely ruined is an exaggeration He's goofy and clumsy as hell, even in the original. Adding a few more moments doesn't really ruin his character, and he still gets his emotional moments.

      I don't understand the crazy cutscenes argument, hasn't anyone here played the sequels? It gets way crazier. If anything this is what Kojima always wanted.
      The voice acting is a legit gripe though.

      @@MrKrewie That explanation is complete garbage when you take into account the fact that it was only more grounded because the PS1's hardware was simply very limited. They couldn't do over the top action scenes like they did in MGS2, so they had to settle for less. So when the game was remade, Kojima himself made requests to make the action in cutscenes over the top.
      What makes far less sense than the kung-fu flips in Twin Snakes is MGS5 as a whole. The game makes no damn sense. It's pretty much 1 big plothole. Tech in the game is way more advanced than it was even in MGS4 despite it taking place like 40 years before MGS4 and 2 decades before the first MGS. Even a decade before the first game in the series (Metal Gear for MSX/NES).

    I love how many people hate how "batshit insane" The Twin Snakes is as if that's not LITERALLY the direction the series went from MGS2 onward. I like The Twin Snakes. It fits in better to the series than the original ended up being in hindsight.

      snake kickflipping off a rocket and firing a missile is not metal gear style. Metal gear always had the human action relatively grounded, which is why cyborg ninjas, gekkos, and metal gears are so impressive

    About the music. There's actually a mod for Twin Snakes that adds the original soundtrack back in while keeping tracks that had no music in the original game. Sure it's a minor improvement but it made the game was more enjoyable for me

    I generally don't like this is idea that just because a video game wants to be cinematic that it might as well just be a movie. If you're talking about walking simulators where you can't even loose, that's one thing but MGS still wouldn't be the same experience if it was a movie. You would never say that movies like 12 Angry men, The Before Trilogy or Pulp Fiction might as well be books or radio plays just because they rely so heavily on dialogue

    Very thorough video, and most complaints are justified. For me, it was a joy to play twin snakes. I was too invested on the story and experience to nitpick most of these complaints.

    If you're looking for an excellent example of what you're talking about with a departure vs being faithful I would highly recommend looking at Final Fantasy 4 and it's remakes. The version on the DS and the version on the PSP provide two radically different types of remake that I think are both valid and serve the point you're making rather well. The PSP is a HD upgrade that looks great but also stays faithful to the original game and only has minor quality of life improvements, whereas the DS version feels like it was rebuilt from the ground up, introducing 3D graphics, voice acted cutscenes and a complete rebalance of the game that makes for a very unique experience compared to the original. If you get the chance I recommend playing through them both.

    This made me realize why MGS1 was so good - it was the story, music, cut scenes and voice acting that made it special. Strip those away and we'd be left with a okay/good game at best. Hell, Cam's Clarke performance as Liquid has to be my top 3 villains to this very day

    I have a headcanon that the Twin Snakes was Snake's training regiment for Smash Bros.
